I'll Be a Son of a Shark

Feb 7: For the last 3 days I've not said a word to the team during practice. In fact there hasn't been any practice, since there is no point since the team isn't going to execute anything I draw up anyway. Instead we spend both extended practice sessions all 3 days running laps on the stairs with a 2 minute break every 10 minutes.

Thank you, Sammy! Maybe you can send some of your pals over to "motivate" them!

I've always found that chicks and pizza are great motivators.

Keep up the great story.

4,400 on hand tonight, only because most of the tickets were sold weeks ago before we tanked our season. We lost in overtime at their place in the conference opener, and have gone downhill ever since. Before the game I ask our guys if they have anything to say. They just look at each other, and I say "okay, i have nothing to say either. go warm up"

we shoot 59% in the first half and lead at intermission 42-31. Only thing I say to them in the locker room is "see if you can hold on to the lead".

As always our shooting cooled off in the 2nd half but our defense remained good enough they were never able to get back into the game.

After the game, I say,"Okay, you won handily at home. You want me to bake you a cake for doing what you are supposed to do? Do what you are supposed to do on the road sometime and I'll think about it. By the way your efforts on the boards stunk."

Battle had 13 pts, 4 asts
Felts 16 pts, 3 asts, 6 rebs, and 3 steals
Jeffers had 20 pts, 2 asts, 4 rebs, 3 steals.
Moore had 8 pts, 2 asts, 7 rebs, a stl and a block
O"Conner had a mediocre 7 pts, 4 rebs in 29 minutes.

Brown was even worse with no points and just 3 rebounds in 22 mins off the bench. Geisen was scoreless and had just 2 rebounds in 15 minutes. Sanders was the lone contributor off the bench with 6 points in 11 minutes.

On the road vs. the last place Buccaneers. We blew them out at home 87-59. A golden opportunity for us to embarrass ourselves again by under-achieving.

We shot 57.6 in the first half, but our defense needs to tighten up as we allowed them to shoot 51.7 and our offense tends to wane quite a bit in the 2nd half. At the half we lead 45-31.

As always our offense disappeared in the 2nd half and our defense wasn't much better. After letting them pull within 3 at 1:43, we managed to hang on for the win, but it was nothing to be proud of. Turning them over 19 times on 12 steals and a 16-2 advantage on fast break points saved us.

I tell them it was a nice 20 minutes of basketball. But I asked them where they got the notion that the game ends at halftime? This is happening game after game after game. The fatigue of playing only 7 players is undoubtedly a factor. Maybe they need to spend even MORE time running laps to build stamina. I dunno.

Battle had a poor game other than grabbing 4 rebounds. He was scoreless and had just 3 asts with 3 TOs.
Felts had a decent overall game, with 12 points, 5 asts, 5 rebs, and a stl.
Jeffers 21 points and 4 stls but once again went cold in the second half.
Moore was solid with 11 points, 2 asts, 6 rebs, and 3 stls.
O'Conner was okay with 8 pts, 2 asts, 7 rebs and a stl, but we need more from him especially in the 2nd half when they get in Ike's grill.

Brown had a mediocre game with just 2 pts, 2 rebs off the bench, but did play some decent defense and had 2 blocks.
Sanders was a difference maker in this one and it's a good thing. He had 12 pts, 2 rebs, and 3 stls.
Geisen played just 3 minutes, but grabbed a rebound.

It was a road win in a season when they've been hard to come by, but we still underachieved and once again played poorly in the 2nd half.

Feb 12:

Ike Jeffers named player of the week for the Big South. Funny how he only seems to win it in weeks he doesn't play particularly well.

There seems to be a lag of a week or so with awards and rankings. Jeffers probably got it for his work the previous week- which would have been two weeks before the actual award. I just confused myself.

lol, I agree it does seem to work that way a lot of the time. I also find it interesting that the player of the week honors are almost always based on offensive production, but the player of the year award is usually much more based on total performance and are usually spot on, as are the all-conference teams.
