The Wildcats have certainly been struggling, but keeping things somewhat consistent around .333%. Bismack Biyombo already has three double-doubles this season and Kemba Walker had a pretty big game against New York. Markieff Morris will take over at the power forward position; hopefully a starter will emerge soon.

Current Record: 7-13
During the past three games the Wildcats have proven that they can perform fairly well against serious playoff teams. They were never outscored by more than ten points and actually managed to snag a win against Denver. Bismack Biyombo has continued to play noticeably well, picking up two double-doubles and two player of the game honors in the span of four games. Kemba Walker and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist have also turned up the heat a little bit.

Surprisingly, the Charlotte Wildcats are just outside of the playoff bracket. I wouldn’t expect to actually see them qualify for the playoffs anytime soon, but that alone should be a testament to just how difficult the Southeast Division is (not to mention the weaknesses inherent to the Eastern Conference overall). We have already tied the previous season for wins, so unless we lose sixty-two games in a row we are set to improve on our overall record. In fact, getting this team somewhere between twenty-five and thirty wins should probably be considered a success, so overall we seem to be making some significant improvements.

Kemba Walker has definitely stepped up as a leader, but improving his field goal percentage would have a significant impact on this team (.428 isn’t that bad, but he needs to be in the team’s top five). Henderson and Gordon have been doing a pretty decent job sharing time at the shooting guard position; they have recorded a combined 25.1 PPG. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist seems to have a pretty consistent stat-line for a rookie (10.8 PPG, 4.3 APG, 5.6 RPG, 1.6 SPG, 1.5 BPG). Only time and experience will improve his game significantly. Bismack Biyombo has been playing some pretty serious ball (11.0 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 2.2 BPG). His numbers may not be elite, but his five double-doubles have put the Wildcats over the edge more than once.

Ekpe Udoh and Markieff Morris have been competing for the starting spot at the power forward position. Here is a side-by-side comparison of their stats (note: these stats are per-36 minutes, not per-game):

Markieff Morris: 12.2 PTS, 7.9 REB, 1.8 AST, 1.3 STL, 1.4 BLK, .329 FG%, .270 3P%, .782 FT%
Ekpe Udoh: 11.2 PTS, 6.2 REB, 1.5 AST, 1.4 STL, 4.7 BLK, .495%, .000% 3P%, .818 FT%

Overall the two had put up some relatively similar numbers, save for Udoh’s extremely impressive shot-blocking ability (he and Bismack Biyombo were the two main reasons that the Charlotte Wildcats currently led the RBA in blocks-per-game). Udoh’s superior efficiency also stood out, even if he was non-existent outside the paint. In the end, these factors combined with Udoh’s slightly advanced maturity gave his game a subtle edge over Markieff Morris. It was a very difficult decision to make, but eventually I awarded the starting power forward position to Ekpe Udoh.

The Wildcats began their five game road trip with a bang; Kemba Walker lit up Sacramento with 27 points while Bismack Biyombo recorded yet another double-double. The next three games, however, were pretty devastating; Charlotte only managed 73 points per game while our opponents averaged 110 points per game. At least we managed to win the final game against Los Angeles, mostly thanks to the fourth-quarter heroics of center Jeremy Tyler.

Growing pains are to be expected as we try and develop our foundation (which is good, because we have plenty of growing pains). The important thing at the moment is trying to develop some sense of consistency; at the very least we have been able to keep our record around the 0.333 mark (0.367 at the moment). Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo have been especially impressive lately (the two have combined for eleven doubles-doubles at this point in the season).

The Charlotte Wildcats have been killing it lately; winning four in a row was a huge deal for this franchise. The four point win against Atlanta might be one of the most important games this season. Despite our obvious struggles, sixteen wins at the halfway point in the season was a little better than my expectations. While we are currently playoff eligible (which is certainly unexpected), it is only by virtue of weak play elsewhere in the conference, and it is unclear where things were going to stand forty-two games from now. Sneaking into the playoffs would be a pretty big deal for the organization, even if only to be slaughtered in the first round. However, it was also worth noting that sneaking into the playoffs would cost us a valuable draft pick, which could be of a more significant importance to the future of the franchise than going one-and-done in the playoffs.

Kemba Walker has continued to play fairly well (15.3 PPG, 5.4 APG, 5.0 RPG), but his field goal completion percentage (.403) still needs some work. Gerald Henderson and Ben Gordon have combined for an average of 23.9 points per game, a slight decrease from the previous quarterly report. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has been working towards finding his comfort zone, but at least he has been playing pretty consistently (10.8 PPG, 4.0 APG, 5.7 RPG, 1.4 STL, 1.3 BPG). Bismack Biyombo has turned out to be a solid defensive player (10.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.5 BPG); he has already recorded nine double-doubles this season.

A point of concern for me, however, was the performance of power forward Ekpe Udoh. He was still producing some manageable numbers, but he had noticeably slumped in almost every single major statistical category. I decided to take another look at how he was playing in comparison to Markieff Morris (Note: these stats are per-36 minutes for the sake of comparison, not per-game):

Ekpe Udoh: 9.8 PTS, 1.4 AST, 6.5 REB, 1.3 STL, 3.4 BLK, .413 FG%, .724 FT%
Markieff Morris: 10.7 PTS, 1.6 AST, 8.3 REB, 1.5 STL, 1.6 BLK, .293 FG%, .757 FT%

Despite his abhorrent field goal shooting percentage, Morris was simply outplaying Udoh. Although Udoh was averaging almost three and a half blocks every thirty-six minutes, I was not entirely convinced that this alone could compensate for his struggles elsewhere. Although Morris was hardly polished himself, I decided to take a different direction at the power forward position and give Markieff Morris the starting role.

Ahhh, the NBA: where making the playoffs is a bad thing for franchises lol.

Great read so far. Good luck bringing this franchise to respectability. I am going to be starting a new league myself and toyed with the idea of journaling it here on the forums. If I do, I'll be sure to not pick Charlotte.

Damn Morris' field goal shooting is truly terrible. I'm pretty sure that if I was given a season in the NBA I could shoot at that clip. Otherwise, great reading, keep it up.
