I'll Be a Son of a Shark

Apr 9: as might be predicted, I'm taken to task by the AD for not getting back to the NCAA. A more unappreciative university never existed. Kevin asks me if I'm finally going to leave. I tell him, "yep, I think I'm going to retire." He looks at me as if i've gone mad. Maybe I have. I'm just tired of all of this.

Apr 11: I was serious about retiring, but today I get a call from UNM. It's not the Aggies, but it's close to home, I decide to take the interview.

Apr 12: The Lobos had a down year, but it's a solid program with solid support from the university and have most of their key players back next year. They seem to be strongly interested in me, so I agree to a 2nd interview.

Apr 13: The A.D. takes me on a tour of the facilities which I must say are very impressive for a mid-major. He tells me the job is mine if I want it. I decide to fly back home and promise I'll give him an answer in 48 hours.

Apr 14: The A.D at Gardner-Webb tells me that the board is willing to offer me another 3 year contract if I'll take a cut in salary. I tell him to kiss my ass. In my resignation letter to the board, I tell them each by name that they are total morons.

Apr 15: I call the A.D. at UNM and tell him I'll happily take the job and will make plans to move as soon as possible. I then call Ma who is absolutely thrilled that I'm coming home.

Apr 16: I apologize to Kevin for burning bridges, because my recommendation for him to take over as head coach fell on deaf ears. He says he wouldn't have taken the damn job even if they had offered it to him. He has been offered a head coaching job at a top DIII school and intends to take it. I tell him that the thought of teaching an entirely new team the principles of the Amoeba Zone is going to be scary without him by my side, but I hope I understand it well enough now myself I can handle the challenge.

I ask him where he ever came up with that thing in the first place. He tells me it was the invention of Jerry Tarkanian, which surprises me. He says he met Jerry once, and that I sorta remind him of Jerry.

Kevin is a great guy, but he sure has some kooky notions.

(ooc) after taking over a new head coaching job you can't hire assistants even with vacancies? how asinine. I just fire the 2 rejects left and will see what I can hire at the start of the next season. Jeremy Patterson is available now which really ticks me off.

ah, ok, i figured it out.

Apr 18: My first order of business as head coach at New Mexico is to beg, plead and bribe Jeremy Patterson to come along as my top assistant at a big raise. Fortunately for me, he jumps at the chance. I ask Jeremy, whom I've come to trust almost as much as Kevin, to sit in on the interviews for the next few weeks as I try to fill the rest of my staff.

Apr 23: The first guy we interview, Chris King, comes highly recommended from a quality DII school. Jeremy and I both agree we want this guy who was brilliant in the interview Q&A. I offer him a 3 year contract on the spot at a salary well above the average for a #2 assistant. He is flabbergasted. He goes into the hallway to call his wife, and comes back 5 minutes later and signs the contract.
