New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

2023 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 New Orleans vs. #5 Orlando
#2 Detroit vs. #6 Philadelphia

Western Conference
#1 Dallas vs. #4 Milwaukee
#3 Houston vs. #7 Utah

The Bucks took the season series 2-1 against us which is concerning but we are still the heavy favourites.

Western Conference Semi-Final – Milwaukee vs. Dallas

Point Guard
Stephen Curry vs. Matt Brown
17.2 points, 7.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds vs.14.5 points, 14.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds

The Playoff Warrior entered once again, with Brown lighting it up with gaudy numbers against Los Angeles. He will probably do it again as Curry is already 34 years old and not the player he used to be. He will get his points but he will probably give up just as many.

Winner - Dallas

Shooting Guard
Iman Shumpert vs. James Harden
14.0 points, 5.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds vs. 19.3 points, 5.5 assists, 6.8 rebounds

This will be a very interesting match-up as Shumpert is arguably one of the best ball thieves in all of history and not a bad all around player as well. Harden started the season slowly but really turned it on in the last series.

Winner - Draw

Small Forward
Corry Hackworth vs. Kevin Durant
11.2 points, 3.6 assists, 10.4 rebounds vs. 27.3 points, 2.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds

This is thin versus thinner as Hackworth is 195lbs at 6’10” while Durant is 6’9” and 215lbs soaking wet. Should be a good match-up as Hackworth will try and run rings around Durant to tire him out. All Corry can hope for is that Durant doesn’t explode like he is known to do.

Winner - Dallas

Power Forward
Andrew Graham vs. Marcus Randle
15.8 points, 0.6 assists, 8.6 rebounds vs. 11.5 points, 2.0 assists, 11.8 rebounds

Randle had a playoff series to forget, shooting 34% from the field, 12% from three and 57% from the line which are well below his season averages. It is probably nerves for the 22 year old and should be able to shake them against the porous Graham. I wouldn’t be surprised if former #1 pick Dennis Freymond steps into the starting line-up at some stage.

Winner - Dallas

Centre
Jimmy Forrest vs. Andre Drummond
24.6 points, 0.8 assists, 6.4 rebounds vs. 24.5 points, 1.3 assists, 7.5 rebounds

This match-up for Andre Drummond is eerily similar to the last one as Forrest is a dynamite scorer but can’t do much else. His defence is woeful but don’t count the 23 year old out as Forrest is arguably the best big man scorer in the league and can drop 30-40 points at any given time. Drummond goal is the same as last time, slow down the big man and score a bit yourself.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Dennis Freymond, Jamal Howell, Bart Flanders vs. Tristan Thompson, Gerald Henderson, Royce White

Freymond is in his twilight years but he can still bring it while Howell will take over if Hackworth fails in guarding Durant. Don’t count Flanders out either as he was very happy playing in Dallas before he was abruptly traded away in the Iman Shumpert/Thomas Cooper deal.

Winner – Draw

Prediction – Dallas in five.

It’s really pleasing to hear the positive response towards Iman Shumpert when he had his name called. He only played 33 games in 2021 but his personality is infectious, and without him we wouldn’t have got Thomas Cooper, and without Cooper there would be no championship. It must have got to Iman has we went 1/10 in only 14 minutes before fouling out as we gutted the Bucks 107-89. Kevin Durant led the way with 27 points and 9 rebounds with Marcus Randle helping him out with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The main star was Andre Drummond who shut down Forrest to the tune of 4/14 shooting for only 13 points and 5 rebounds while Andre had 19 points and 7 rebounds. That is all he needs to do this series and we will go through.

Dallas leads 1-0

The Bucks stormed out of the gates with a 34-23 first quarter to stun our home crowd behind Steph Curry’s 23 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds night. We hit back with our own 36-13 third quarter which put the game to rest as Andre Drummond is thumbing his nose to one of the best centre scorers. Drummond had 26 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks, nullifying Jimmy Forrest’s 16 points and 6 rebounds in only 27 minutes before fouling out. Gerald Henderson was a nice surprise with 16 points in only 19 minutes off the bench. So far, so good.

Dallas leads 2-0

The Milwaukee crowd knew that when we get on a roll it’s hard to stop so they decided that stopping us early would be a key to the win. It wasn’t in the first quarter but the second term they shut is down, gaining a 29-19 quarter lead to put us down. It didn’t help that they outscored us again in the third quarter 37-24 and it was party time in Wisconsin, winning their first game 109-83. Jimmy Forrest dominated the game like everyone knew he could, with 28 points and 12 rebounds while Steph Curry put up 20 points and 9 assists. Corry Hackworth held Kevin Durant to a 4/15 shooting night for only nine points with Andre Drummond leading the way again with 18 points and 13 rebounds. James Harden had a night to forget with 13 points, 8 assists and 8 turnovers.

Dallas leads 2-1

Jimmy Forrest had only 10 points and 7 rebounds but the ending was still the same as the Bucks simply outwork us 113-83 to tie the series. Steph Curry was the leader with 27 points and 10 assists while Corry Hackworth again shut Kevin Durant down but was also amazing on the other end, scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds. Durant went 3/11 from the field for 18 points and 5 turnovers as we shot 35% from the field and we suddenly don’t have the momentum we usually have in a playoff series.

Series tied 2-2

To nobody’s surprise #1 New Orleans swept past #5 Orlando, making that eight straight wins to start their playoff campaign.

Oh no. Steph Curry has the ball in his hand with scores tied and twelve seconds on the clock. One screen, two screens, step back to the three point line... swish. Damn. Bucks take the series lead 3-2 going back to their home. Damn.

Milwaukee leads 3-2

Obviously everyone knows that this is the game to step up, for both teams. We don’t want our season to end while the Bucks don’t want to go back to our home court. Steph Curry definitely didn’t want another game, shooting 12/19 from the field and 11/14 from three for 36 points while Jimmy Forrest went straight at Andre for 22 points and 11 rebounds. Andre hit back with 27 points and 11 rebounds while Kevin Durant finally broke free from Corry Hackworth with 25 points and 9 rebounds. We got out to a 18 point lead in the second quarter before Milwaukee struck back for a 34-19 third quarter. We held strong though to force a game seven with a 115-109 road victory. My heart might have calmed down for game seven two days away.

Series tied 3-3

All the other series have finished ages ago, with #2 Detroit staying to the script with a 4-1 win over #6 Philadelphia while #7 Utah are in ominous form, taking care of #3 Houston 4-1. Oh dear, these Jazz are legit. Will we be playing them?

No we won’t, as the Bucks turned a one point three quarter time deficit into a five point series clinching win with a 100-95 heartbreaker. Steph Curry was the hero with 32 points as he totally decimated Matt Brown. Jimmy Forrest had 23 points and 9 rebounds while Corry Hackworth took care of Kevin Durant again with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Durant had a horrible night, shooting 2/14 from the field but went 13/14 from the line. Urgh, what a waste.

Milwaukee wins 4-3

After a few days of wallowing in post defeat sorrow I decide to turn the television and see who is going to the NBA Finals.

2023 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 New Orleans defeated #2 Detroit 4-1

Western Conference
#7 Utah defeated #4 Milwaukee 4-3

2023 NBA Finals – Utah vs. New Orleans

Point Guard
Anton Palmer vs. Lewis Vines
9.6 points, 5.9 assists, 2.8 rebounds vs. 12.9 points, 8.8 assists, 4.8 rebounds

Palmer will be injured for the first two games which makes it even worse as Vines is a top ten point guard. Not a good start for the Jazz and they need all the help they can get.

Winner – New Orleans

Shooting Guard
Changa Hendricks vs. Dion Waiters
8.9 points, 5.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds vs. 18.0 points, 5.5 assists, 6.0 rebounds

The disappointing number two pick of the 2015 draft, Hendricks has been playing well this season. He will need to play like an actual number two pick against Waiters who loves doing the dirty work and willing his team to win.

Winner – New Orleans

Small Forward
Lebron James vs. Bill Gearhart
14.1 points, 2.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds vs. 18.7 points, 1.2 assists, 5.8 rebounds

At 37 years old James isn’t anywhere near the player he used to be but he can still fill up the cup. He loves to pick on smaller opponents and at 6’4”, 210lbs Gearhart fits that to a T.

Winner - Draw

Power Forward
Derrick Favors vs. Anthony Davis
26.7 points, 0.8 assists, 11.9 rebounds vs. 22.2 points, 2.1 assists, 10.8 rebounds

This is the match-up to end all match-ups with the best two PFs in the league. Favors will be slightly under 100% for the first two games which will hurt the Jazz. I don’t need to explain why Davis is held in high regard and will be the driving force for the Hornets team.

Winner – New Orleans

Centre
Mark Lewis vs. Bryan Plowman
25.7 points, 1.2 assists, 10.3 rebounds vs. 11.8 points, 1.7 assists, 7.6 rebounds

Mark Lewis. Those two words cause opponent centres to freeze in terror. He can do it all and will need to have a series for the history books. If the games are tight he will be ‘hack a shaq’ed’ because of his atrocious free throw shooting but everything else he will destroy.

Winner - Utah

Bench
DeJuan Blair, Issiah Hemhill, Jan Vesley vs. Hillar Petrauskas, Bill Mallet, Chad Charney

Honestly, if Petrauskas was on any other team and was allowed to start, he would probably be an All Star, which tips the scales in New Orleans’ favour.

Winner – New Orleans

Prediction – New Orleans in five. Last year was an abnormality, losing to Dallas but the Hornets will have no trouble winning their third title in four years. The Jazz might steal a game but don’t be surprised if it’s a sweep.

Game One
Utah 103 – New Orleans 112 (NOH 1-0)
Player of the Game – Anthony Davis – 17 points, 11 rebounds, 7 blocks, 5 steals

Game Two
Utah 91 – New Orleans 115 (NOH 2-0)
Player of the Game – Dion Waiters – 22 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals

Game Three
New Orleans 98 – Utah 80 (NOH 3-0)
Player of the Game – Anthony Davis – 21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 blocks

Game Four
New Orleans 108 – Utah 106 (NOH 4-0)
Player of the Game – Dion Waiters – 22 points, 8 assists

Well there you have it, a sweep just as nearly predicted. Mark Lewis had an average series, averaging 18.8 points, 12.3 rebounds and shooting 23/62 from the foul line, or 37% which just isn’t good enough. I really need to do something about the Hornets.

Lottery time for the Camah or Tommasini sweepstakes.

16 – Sacramento (0)
15 – Los Angeles Clippers (0)
14 – Nevada (0)
13 – Atlanta (0)
12 – Sacramento (0)
11 – Memphis (0)
10 –Toronto (0)
9 – Golden State (0)
8 – San Antonio (0)
7 – Portland (0)
6 – Chicago (0)
5 – Seattle (-1)

Minnesota have jumped.

4 – Washington (-1)
3 – Miami (-1)
2 – Minnesota (+3)
1 – Los Angeles Lakers (0)

If you are wondering how the Lakers who we played in the first round of the playoffs got the first overall pick, let me explain.

In November Lakers trade SF Kent Harris for Knicks 2023 1st round pick. I didn’t think too much of it because I didn’t think that the Knicks would be so bad. Pretty good by the Lakers but the way they are going they are probably going to draft Williams and then keep him on the bench like they do Kendall Marshall and Tate McKenzie.

I have some real questions I need to find answers for because after this wasted season I might have to shake things up.

I can’t see Anthony Davis not winning the MVP but I would love to see Kevin and Andre in an All NBA team.

Most Valuable Player:
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets – 21.1 points, 1.7 assists, 10.1 rebounds, 2.2 steals, 4.1 blocks

Defensive Player of the Year:
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets

Obvious.

Sixth Man of the Year:
Austin Rivers, Brooklyn Nets – 11.3 points, 7.0 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 0.6 steals, 0.0 blocks

This is the second time Rivers has won this award, going nicely with his 2017 nod.

Rookie of the Year:
Ledaryl McMillian, Golden State Warriors – 18.7 points, 5.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 0.3 blocks

Obvious x2.

Coach of the Year:
Jeff Van Gundy, New Orleans Hornets – 65-17 (.793)

I really think Jaymes has been hard done by here, as we had the better regular season and this award doesn’t take into account the playoffs.

All NBA First Team:
Kyrie Irving, Houston Rockets
John Johnson, Detroit Pistons
Kevin Durant, Dallas Mavericks
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
Eryk Charnowski, Miami Heat

All NBA Second Team:
Damian Lillard, Los Angeles Clippers
Klay Thompson, Orlando Magic
Paul Orvis, Toronto Raptors
Kenneth Faried, Memphis Grizzlies
Jeff Cunningham, Los Angeles Lakers

All NBA Third Team:
John Wall, Memphis Grizzlies
Earl Oliver, Portland Trailblazers
Raul Lopez, Boston Celtics
Christ Drexler, Denver Nuggets
Andre Drummond, Dallas Mavericks

All Defence First Team:
Ricky Rubio, Chicago Bulls
Iman Shumpert, Milwaukee Bucks
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Oklahoma City Thunder
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
Andre Drummond, Dallas Mavericks

All Defence Second Team:
Lewis Vines, New Orleans Hornets
Dion Waiters, New Orleans Hornets
Cedric Watson, San Antonio Spurs
Kenneth Faried, Memphis Grizzlies
Bismack Biyombo, Orlando Magic

All Rookie First Team:
Ledaryl McMillian, Golden State Warriors
James McDaniel, Chicago Bulls
Enrique Mendez, Minnesota Timberwolves
Art Haynes, Miami Heat
Joey Thunell, San Antonio Spurs

All Rookie Second Team:
John Bailey, Oklahoma City Thunder
Travis Grigsby, Seattle Supersonics
Tyler Gainous, New York Knicks
Richie Tibbetts, Detroit Pistons
Marlon Haymon, Memphis Grizzlies

Mr. English rang me a couple of days later looking a little despondent. He was close to selling the team to the new CEO of the Sony Corporation, Mr Yu Sakamora but baulked at the last moment because he wants another title and begs me to get it for him. I have never seen Mr English show any other emotion than sheer brutality when he is working and elation when we win so this must mean a huge amount to him. I tell him to make room in the trophy cabinet because we will be red hot favourites for next season’s title. He beamed at me through the phone and I just realised what I had said.

I just promised Mr Mike English a championship next season. Gulp.

Jaymes Bekale has retired at the ripe old age of 76. I don’t blame him, this gig is tough. At the chagrin of first assistant Shawn Cooper I promote second assistant Kevin Garnett to the top job and Glendon Woni to the second assistant position. Cooper gets so made with the decision to leapfrog him that he quits, giving a hole in our first and third assistant jobs. That didn’t last long as we bring in 50 year old Luke Battier to be our first and 35 year old Mike McDade to be our third. I really like the look of Battier as even though he isn’t very good at seeing player potential he is a genius strategy brain and can develop the hell out of young guys. If you thought Marcus Randle and Matt Brown were good now just wait until you see what happens when Battier gets through with them.

The NBA has released their official Mock Draft, and it is very much the Camah Williams and Tiburcio Tommasini draft and then everyone else.

1. LA Lakers – PG Camah Williams
2. Minnesota – SF Tiburcio Tommasini
3. Miami – SF Chris Jackson
4. Washington – SF Marlo Graham
5. Seattle – SF Michael Graham
6. Chicago – C Ryan Wadley
7. Portland – SF PJ Fowler
8. San Antonio – PG Darrin Owens
9. Golden State – SG Reggie Blake
10. Toronto – C Antonio Mims
11. Memphis – PF Robert Jackson
12. Sacramento – PF Charles Means
13. Atlanta – SF Joe Curry
14. Nevada – SF Dan Mixson
15. LA Clippers – PF Francis Bowyer
16. Sacramento – PG Kevin Jensen

I really can’t see Means and Jackson going outside the top ten while Fowler and Owens will probably be the ones swapped.

State of the Dallas Mavericks

After a very disappointing 2022-2023 NBA season the Dallas Mavericks are watching their title window close by the second. Their best players are on the wrong side of 30 and if they don’t new blood their fans should get used to second round exits. Here is the state of the squad –

Untouchable

Marcus Randle – At only 23 years old he was second in rebounding in the regular season behind Derrick Favors. He is still loaded with potential and will be a focus point for the Mavericks for years to come.

Andre Drummond – Just turning 30 years old he is probably the best defensive centre in the league. He is also a dynamic scorer, a great teammate and the fans love him. This guy will probably be around until he retires.

Highly Unlikely to be Traded

Kevin Durant – The regular season scoring leader is entering his 17th season in 2023-24 and is on the downward trend of his career. He is the captain and will probably dictate his own exiting terms. It doesn’t help that Durant is owed $41 million over the next two years.

Could be Traded if the Right Deal is Offered

Matias Perez – The 19 year old Argentinean is oozing with potential but with team favourite Matt Brown looking like a stayer Perez could be traded while his stocks are high.

Tristan Thompson – He was instrumental as the leader of the second unit, Thompson has proved that he can run with the best. He could be traded because at 31 years old he might want one last chance at a starting role, which he won’t get here in Dallas.

Will be Shopped

James Harden – Harden still has some game but at 33 years old and owed $36 million over the next three years the head office might try and snag a younger SG while Harden can still contribute. Might be combined with Matias Perez to sweeten the deal.

Fillers for Trades

David Forney, Hayletts Smith – At only 29 years old they both still has plenty of basketball left in them but they aren’t important enough to reject decent trades for.

Unmoveable Contract

Ricardo Marquardt – He may be a pet favourite of General Manager Yaxley McMillan but his $4.7 million contract is just too expensive for his talent level.

Notable Free Agents

Matt Brown – The team loves Brown and Brown loves Dallas. He will be a member of the future Mavericks with Marcus Randle and McMillan will do anything to get the Playoff Warrior’s signature.

Sean Gilmore – With James Harden on the way out Gilmore might get the minutes he deserves. Some experts believe that he will be offered a contract that is overpaying by other teams to pry him away from Dallas.

Royce White, Mike Conley – These two could be brought back but also could be let go. If Perez is traded then Conley will definitely be back in a Dallas uniform.

Won’t be Back

Gerald Henderson, Marc Gasol – These two are just too old and not good enough to be a part of any plans. If they are still around at the end of the free agency period they might get a look but there are no plans to retain them.

As you can see there might be a bit of a shake up for the champions of two years ago and it’s up to GM Yaxley McMillan and new head coach Kevin Garnett to get the right balance. The whole basketball world will be watching.

2023 NBA Draft

1 – LA Lakers – SF Chris Jackson
Whaaaa? I’m not sure about Jackson over Williams but he will be a good player, no doubt.

I go shopping to see if I can get something for James Harden. I’m not expecting anything exciting, just someone a bit younger. I try and try to snatch John Johnson from Detroit but unsurprisingly the Pistons decline very quickly. I did find a trade partner but I had to give up one of my young assets.

Dallas trade:
SG James Harden
PG Matias Perez

Toronto trade:
SG Jake Chase
C Joe Duggins

Winner – Toronto. The Raptors get two starters as Jeremy Lin is getting too old to be a quality starter. Chase is a dynamite defender who can score as good as Harden while Duggins is a very good bench big.

I’m happy with Chase as I’ve liked his game for a long time. He is also three years younger than Harden, on a better contract and a much better defender than Harden. He isn’t as good at rebounding and passing but we have Marcus and Matt for those areas.

2 – Minnesota – PG Camah Williams
I would never have thought but going second means Williams is a steal. Look for him to be similar to Ledaryl “Buzzsaw” McMillian. He won’t start straight away but will be a dynamite player in a few years.

3 – Miami – SF Michael Graham
Hmm, probably a bit too high for him but isn’t too much a stretch.

Charlotte offers me the #19 pick for Hayletts Smith and I accept. I’m going to see if I can trade up for a nice young prospect. In other trade news, Chicago has traded James McDaniel for the #4 pick, and I’ll go over it after the draft.

4 – Chicago – PF Robert Jackson
He isn’t the best defender but he is a great scorer and rebounder. At #4 it’s a good pick but when you take into account that Tommasini hasn’t been taken yet it’s a missed chance.

5 – Seattle – SF Marlo Graham
The younger and better Graham brother will excel in Seattle. There is a hole at SF at Graham will fit in nicely.

6 – Chicago – C Ryan Wadley
Small at 6’9” but is an old school low block banger. Great pick at #6 and will get plenty of open looks at the hands of Ricky Rubio.

7 – Portland – SF Tiburcio Tommasini
Great, great pick. He should be the Blazers’ starting SF for years to come. Steal of all steals of the draft.

What? Nevada has offered me their second round pick (#52) for Ricardo Marquardt’s $4.7 million contract and in a heartbeat I accept. Awesome.

8 – San Antonio – PF Charles Means
Another great pick here, this seems like a pretty deep draft.

9 – Golden State – SG Lamoni Daniels
Probably not the best SG in the draft and could have been taken at the end of the lottery. He can score but is known to be a chucker.

10 – Toronto – PG Darrin Owens
He may be slight but Owens is the second best PG in the draft by far. He has the uncanny ability to make the right pass. The experts don’t like the selection but I would be happy if I was a part of the Raptors.

11 – Memphis – SF Joe Curry
This is a bit of a stretch as he doesn’t have a mid range shot and doesn’t have good ball handling skills. Dwyane Wade is now the General Manager of the Grizzlies if anyone wanted to know.

12 – Sacramento – C Antonio Mims
Mims is quite raw and doesn’t really know the flow of the game yet but he has all the physical tools to be a good player in the future. He will learn plenty from DeMarcus Cousins and could be DMC’s replacement in a few years.

13 – Atlanta – PF Quinn Kelly
Who? I’m not sure about the 6’9” PF from High Point, this is definitely a reach.

14 – Nevada – SF Steve Smith
I don’t really know much about him other than he is super streaky. Could be a good bench player who can score in bunches but won’t have enough consistency to be a reliable contributor.

15 – LA Clippers – Reggie Blake
Great steal here as Blake was the best SG in the draft and has legit SG size. Will battle with Stefan Nitschke for the SG position.

I like Blake so much I trade our #19 and #52 picks for Blake and the Clippers accept. With Blake on board Sean Gilmore might be expendable.

16 – Sacramento – PG Kevin Jensen
I’m not sure about this pick, if the Kings were looking for a PG it should have been James Blakemore from Illinois.

17 – LA Lakers – PG Kris Heard
18 – Utah – SF PJ Fowler
19 – LA Clippers – PG James Blakemore
So the trade gets a win from both sides. I think the Clippers were chasing Blakemore so decided to trade down with us and we wanted Blake so the deal was made. This is what makes trading fun, both teams getting what they wanted.

20 – Brooklyn – SF Dan Mixson
21 – Oklahoma City – SG Haven Roberson
22 – Philadelphia – SG Charlie Adams
23 – Denver – PF Kelly Coleman
24 – Brooklyn – PG Tim Goodwin
25 – Memphis – C Carlton Lilly
26 – Brooklyn – PG Danny McDuffie
27 – New York – SG Abasi Thomas

Power Forward Francis Bowyer from Australia is only 18 years old and has lottery level talent. Too bad his personality is as toxic as they come, which is why he might slip into the second round.

28 – Orlando – SG Jerrold Wesby
29 – Phoenix – PF Derek Jones
30 – Detroit – PG Eric McIntyre
31 – New Orleans – PG Elliot Ferguson
32 – Atlanta – PG Monty Matthew

Finally Bowyer gets drafted by Charlotte at #38. This is what happens when you are 18 years old and don’t want to listen to anyone. If he matures he will be a huge steal but I doubt it.

There were some massive trades even if you don’t include our Harden/Chase deal. There was at least one game changing three team deal.

Washington trade:
2023 1st round pick (#4)

Chicago trade:
SG James McDaniel

Winner – Both. The Bulls drafted Robert Jackson who will be a very good all around PF, who can do everything well but exceptionally. James McDaniel has been tabbed as the next player to explode onto the scene but he is a bit of a drama queen. If McDaniel can control his diva antics the Wizards win this trade.

Washington trade:
C Mike Hall

LA Lakers trade:
SF Danilo Gallinari
2023 2nd round pick

Winner – LA Lakers. On the surface this trade is not very interesting but delve deeper and it gets a little interesting. Not by much though. Hall is only 24 years old and could blossom into a decent bench big, swinging the deal towards La-La land.

Indiana trade:
SF James Swygart

Oklahoma City trade:
C Peter McCaffery
2023 2nd round pick

Winner – Indiana. Don’t get me wrong, Swygart is a good player but McCaffery has starter material and is a great defender to boot. Great deal by the Pacers.

LA Lakers trade:
SF Andrew Seitz

Portland trade:
PF John Henson

Winner – Lakers. With the addition of #1 pick Chris Jackson they didn’t need Seitz at SF anymore. I don’t know why they don’t just start Bryce Metcalf with Jeff Cunningham to have their own version of the Twin Towers. Henson is a great defensive PF who should help out the defensive lacking Cunningham.

Houston trade:
PG Ryan Robinson

Portland trade:
SG Igor Lepinat

Winner – Portland. Lepinat is decent but Robinson is a spark plug. He won’t be starting because the Blazers have Marco Barker but he will a great addition to the team. He can defend as well which Barker and starting SG Earl Oliver can’t do.

San Antonio trade:
PF Kevin Love

San Antonio receives:
PG Damian Lillard
2023 2nd round pick (TOR)
2023 2nd round pick (LAC)

Toronto trade:
SG James Harden
2023 2nd round pick

Toronto receives:
PF Kevin Love

LA Clippers trade:
PG Damian Lillard
2023 2nd round pick

LA Clippers receives:
SG James Harden

Winner – Toronto, then San Antonio, then the Clippers. Kevin Love might be 34 years old but he is still a superstar. Pairing him with Paul Orvis spells trouble for the Eastern Conference. The Spurs gain an All NBA second teamer in Damian Lillard to go with their troupe of young up and comers like Charles Means and Joey Thunell. To makes things even better, they should have enough cap space to sign someone to a maximum contract. The Clippers on the other hand probably get the worst player in the trade and they have him playing at PG. The team has talent but they need to work out who is playing where to fulfil their promise.

We have quite a few expired contracts so say goodbye to Mike Conley, Marc Gasol and Gerald Henderson while Matt Brown and Sean Gilmore get qualifying offers making them restricted free agents. I also keep a hold of Royce White.

The Summer League rolls around and we have Reggie Blake and Joe Duggins going. Even though Duggins is 26 years old and probably doesn’t need to go I haven’t seen anything of him so getting five games from him before the season will help the coaching staff analyse him.

Free agent Marcus Miller stole the show in our 103-88 win over Utah with 25 points. Joe Duggins was also good with 17 points and 6 rebounds but Reggie Blake had a shocker, going 0/8 from the field for 2 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 turnovers. Ouch.

The next game was even easier as we shot 59% from the field in a 128-94 rout of Chicago. Nate Houston was electric off the bench with 33 points on 14/19 shooting in only 24 minutes for us. Reggie Blake had a better game with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

That’s three from three as we take care of Atlanta 100-90 and it seems that Reggie Blake’s nerves have been shaken off. Our rookie SG had 13 points and 8 rebounds while Joe Duggins was close with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Again we shot well, shooting 48% from the field.

Speaking of shooting well, we went 58/95 or 61% in our massive 131-94 win over San Antonio. Eight Maverick players were in double figures led by Andy Robinson’s 21 points in 19 minutes but strangely Reggie Blake wasn’t one of them, going 1/6 for 4 points.

The team finishes up 5-0 after a 99-98 nailbiting win over Nevada. Joe Duggins showed his class with 17 points and 9 rebounds while Marcus Miller put up 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals and I’m really going to have a look at him in free agency.

Speaking of free agency, here is the top ten out of contract players –

C Eryk Charnowski*
SF Raul Lopez*
PF Chris Drexler
PF Derrick Favors
SF Andrew Owens
PF Chad Dickenman*
C Ronnie Howard*
PG Matt Brown*
C Emmett Emerson
SF Jamal Howell

This is an amazing crop and an amazingly deep free agency. My first priority is to re-sign Matt Brown but as a restricted free agent I can match any offer sheet he signs. I offer him a 5 year, $40 million deal which is underpaying but I’m just going to wait to see what he signs and then match it. Next is to re-sign Sean Gilmore to a cap friendly deal and maybe sign back Royce White. We have the $5 million MLE this year so I’m going to try and pick up a quality bench PG/SG. For some reason I can only offer Royce White a four year, $7 million contract so hopefully he likes Dallas. Sean Gilmore gets a 5 year, $20 million contract which is about right for what he will bring to the team.

To no-one’s surprise Boston re-signs Raul Lopez to a five year maximum deal. That was the definition of a no-brainer. Just like Miami’s situation with Charnowski.

Which they do two days later.

Marcus Miller gets paid for his good summer league play, re-upping with Brooklyn for three years and $13.5 million. The same day Chad Dickenman re-signs with the Lakers which Ronnie Howard signs an offer sheet with Memphis for around $11 million a year over four years. The Hornets’ title defence chances took a hit with Dion Waiters going to Milwaukee for four years and $36.5 million.

I don’t blame Matt Brown for taking the better offer from Milwaukee, he just wanted a better contract. I instantly match the four year, $42 million deal to keep him here. Some big names were on the move today, with Andrew Owens taking a $48 million contract to play with Washington while Jared Arenas signs a similar one to go play with Damian Lillard in San Antonio. The Bucks waste no time in trying to secure their PG as they sign Tate McKenzie to an offer sheet worth around $8 million a year.

The Magic don’t match Ronnie Howard’s offer sheet with Memphis so he is officially a Grizzly while Nevada steal the superstar in the making in Ryan Garris. My target for our MLE Kemba Walker, signs with his old team Charlotte for the MLE. Damn. I quickly regain my head and offer my old friend Antoine Martin the full MLE, while offering Iman Shumpert the LLE which he definitely won’t accept.

The next day Sean Gilmore re-signs with us but Antoine Martin gets a $10 million a year offer from Orlando and obviously signs with them. Derrick Favors re-signs with Utah which is a relief for Jazz fans while Chris Drexler does the same with Denver. It’s tender offer accepting day as most of the good young guys take a one year offer to become free agents again next season. I offer Jamal Howell the full MLE and I hope that this team and its goals swing him to our side.

Derrick Rose signs here for two years as a back up for Matt Brown but my MLE targets are falling away. Jamal Howell signs with New York for $8 million a year while Kawhi Leonard who I was going to try and sign next went to Nevada for $9 million a year over four years. Maybe I’ll keep our MLE for next season. Tate McKenzie is now officially a Buck as the Clippers don’t match.

I up our offer to Iman Shumpert to a one year MLE deal and he accepts while Paul George accepts our LLE. Finally Royce White re-signs with us for the four year, $6.9 million deal and I realise that Derrick Rose is a husk now and I cut him. We signed Eric Bledsoe to take up Rose’s spot. We have 14 players under contract so I offer Klay Thompson a two year minimum deal and I hope he signs.

And he doesn’t, going to Miami for $3 million a year over 3 years. Oh well. Dwight Howard might also be a husk but at least he is big so we sign him to be our last big off the bench. And he has never won a championship so hopefully we can get him one before he retires.

Training camp comes and goes and Matt Brown is now a top three PG in the league and the best passing PG by far. With James Harden gone Brown will have to take on most of the distributing load as Chase isn’t that good at passing. Marcus Randle has also grown if that’s possible but Kevin Durant has regressed again which isn’t a surprise, being 34 years old and entering his 17th season. I’m really pumped about this team, we might not have the big man depth but our bench bigs are really good. I send Reggie Blake down to the D-League because he will be behind Chase, Sean Gilmore and Iman Shumpert for minutes.

The pres-season rankings have been announced and there is a surprising team leading the way in the East.

Eastern Conference Pre-Season Rankings
1 – Chicago Bulls
2 – New Orleans Hornets
3 – Toronto Raptors
4 – Brooklyn Nets
5 – Miami Heat
Last – New York Knicks

The Bulls probably have the best bench in the league with the likes of Wesley Fields, Brandon Knight and rookies Ryan Wadley and Robert Jackson but even with the loss of Dion Waiters the Hornets are still the favourites. It’s good to see Matias Perez slotted to start at PG for the Raptors and with the acquisition of Kevin Love they should make some noise. Not a fan of Brooklyn but at least they are better than the woeful Knicks who should be again down the bottom. Hopefully they don’t trade away their first round pick again.

Western Conference Pre-Season Rankings
1 – Dallas Mavericks

2 – Los Angeles Lakers
3 – Sacramento Kings
4 – Minnesota Timberwolves
5 – Utah Jazz
Last – Phoenix Suns

Good to see us at the top but there is no way Phoenix will be last. If they do I will eat my hat and put the video on YouTube. Minnesota looks nice but I wouldn’t be surprised if Camah Williams goes down to the D-League because Li-chi King is starting there and he won’t be moved yet. I like Utah at #5 because even though they don’t have Lebron any more they still have Mark Lewis and Derrick Favors.

The pre-season All NBA teams are also been released and I think they did a great job last season as most of the pre-season guys were there at the end of the season awards.

All NBA First Team:
Kyrie Irving, Houston Rockets
Earl Oliver, Portland Trailblazers
Raul Lopez, Boston Celtics
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
Mark Lewis, Utah Jazz

All NBA Second Team:
Ricky Rubio, Chicago Bulls
Ron Winston, Cleveland Cavaliers
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Oklahoma City Thunder
Derrick Favors, Utah Jazz
Eryk Charnowski, Miami Heat

All NBA Third Team:
John Wall, Memphis Grizzlies
Bradley Beal, Atlanta Hawks
Paul Orvis, Toronto Raptors
Marcus Randle, Dallas Mavericks
Jimmy Forrest, Milwaukee Bucks

Without further ado, here is your 2023-2024 “Let’s win for Mr English” Dallas Mavericks –

PG – Matt Brown
SG – Jake Chase
SF – Kevin Durant
PF – Marcus Randle
C – Andre Drummond
6th – Iman Shumpert
7th – Paul George
8th – Joe Duggins
9th – Tristan Thompson
10th – Sean Gilmore
11th – Royce White
12th – Eric Bledsoe
13th – David Forney
14th – Dwight Howard
D-League – Reggie Blake

On the second day of the season Dustin Harris is on the move again.

Atlanta trade:
C Dustin Harris

Chicago trade:
2024 1st round pick

Winner – Atlanta. The Hawks might get back to their elite best with that cancer off the team. The pick should be low so they didn’t really get much out of it but they did get him off the squad which is a huge plus. To make matters worse for the Bulls, Harris is coming off the bench behind Ben Chambers which he will hate.

Our first game of the season was a 125-92 shellacking of Portland. Marcus Randle was our best with 28 points and 14 rebounds while Andre Drummond (20 points, 8 rebounds) and Jake Chase (23 points) provided support. Earl Oliver was the best for the Blazers with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists but his backcourt running mate Kevin Epps was a tough night, going 6/21 from the field.

Dallas Mavericks 1-0

Our biggest lead against the Spurs was a whopping 52 points as we simply wiped the floor with them 142-95. We shot 58% from the field as Andre Drummond led the way with 34 points and 9 rebounds while Marcus Randle was again stellar with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Matt Brown has been better than usual with 9 points and 17 assists. Newly acquired Damian Lillard led the way with 24 points and 8 assists but when we shoot 59% to their 42% it’s no contest.

Dallas Mavericks 2-0

For some reason we have a whole week off, so you know we are going to have one hell of a Hell Week this year. That means that we have played two games compared to Atlanta’s nine. The week off was helpful because we blew them out of the water to start with, bashing out a 37-15 first quarter to win 117-96. Kevin Durant led the way with 25 points and 7 rebounds while Andre Drummond shot poorly for 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Sean Gilmore was our spark off the bench with 13 points on 6/6 shooting in only 8 minutes. Talk about bang for your buck. Brad Beal went 8/22 for 21 points but Demond Lewis fouled out in only 14 minutes.

Dallas Mavericks 3-0

Our first away game was a successful one as we turn the 7-1 Bobcats into the 7-2 Kittens with a 113-95 victory. Jake Chase had his best game as a Maverick with 29 points and 5 rebounds while Sean Gilmore continued his stellar bench form with 12 points in 9 minutes. Jacob Alexander is breaking out this year, and tonight kept his run going with 24 points.

Dallas Mavericks 4-0

With our 111-75 rout of Cleveland our winning margin of our first five games is a whopping 31 points which is pretty much all you can ask for to start a season. Kevin Durant had 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals and our bench star Sean Gilmore had the third highest score in the game with 16 points in 10 minutes. Brooks Badu was the second highest with 17 points on 18 minutes but Ron Winston had a terrible game with 14 points on 5/14 shooting. Those were the only Cavalier players in double figures.

Dallas Mavericks 5-0

Marcus Randle led the way in our 112-95 victory over Brooklyn with 30 points and 13 rebounds while Andre Drummond was very happy to play back up with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Matt Brown has had trouble with fouls this season, fouling out twice in only six games with one of them coming tonight but that didn’t stop him from recording 13 assists. Donte Rock tried going at Randle with 29 points and 7 rebounds but the team shot 38% from the field. For some reason Blake Griffin is coming off the bench, sure he is getting old but at least trade him if you aren’t going to play him.

Dallas Mavericks 6-0

Much better from Matt Brown in our 124-113 win over Denver as our general had 18 points, 21 assists and 6 rebounds but still picked up five fouls. Another player in foul trouble was Marcus Randle who only played 22 minutes, but Tristan Thompson filled in admirably. Playing against the elite Chris Drexler, Thompson put up 11 points, 11 rebounds and 7 blocks while keeping Drexler to 8/22 shooting for 20 points and 10 rebounds. That’s a win for us. Brandon Jennings had the game high of 30 points and 7 assists while Perry Jones had a great all around game with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 7-0

We finish the season at a perfect 8-0 with a 117-94 slide past Seattle. Andre Drummond was outstanding against Travis Ross with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Marcus Randle went 4/13 for 16 points and 17 rebounds. Sean Gilmore shot six free throws in 12 minutes for 11 points and I’m really glad we kept him. Bret Davis is an outstanding PG now and showed it with 28 points while Travis Ross went 7/9 for 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Sonics had 33 fouls compared to our 23 so I’m going to be more sympathetic towards biased foul counts.

Dallas Mavericks 8-0

Being perfect obviously means that we are on top of the league, with Milwaukee hanging onto Jimmy Forrest’s hot start behind us at 12-4. Utah are bucking their downward trend with a 10-5 record. Minnesota are last at 3-11 with the surprising Portland Trailblazers close by at 3-10. It’s funny, we have played eight games while the Thunder have already rushed through 20 games, which means we are going to have a hell of a finish to the season.

The Hornets are not having a title hangover at 14-2 while Charlotte of all teams are right behind them at 12-3. Miami are still on the bottom at 4-14 with New York having one less win at 3-9 but five less losses which is why they are above the Heat.

Dallas Top Points
Andre Drummond – 21.4
Kevin Durant – 20.4
Jake Chase – 20.3
Sean Gilmore is averaging 8.1 points in only 9.5 minutes, which equates to 30.8 points per 36 minutes.

Dallas Top Assists
Matt Brown – 14.0
Iman Shumpert – 3.6
Eric Bledsoe – 2.3

Dallas Top Rebounds
Marcus Randle – 13.0
Andre Drummond – 9.5
Kevin Durant – 6.5

League Leaders
Points – Jimmy Forrest (MIL) – 30.1
Assists – Matt Brown (DAL) – 14.0
Rebounds – Marcus Randle (DAL) – 13.0
Blocks – Anthony Davis (NOH) – 3.4
Steals – Lewis Vines (NOH) – 3.3
Efficiency – Kyrie Irving (HOU) – 26.9

Rookie Leaders
Points – Joe Curry (MEM) – 13.7
Assists – Darrin Owens (TOR) – 4.4
Rebounds – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 6.7
Blocks – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 1.8
Steals – Darrin Owens (TOR) – 1.4
Efficiency – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 14.7

I was wrong about Jackson it seems, as the #1 pick has been exciting so far, averaging nearly 2 blocks and 1.5 steals a game so far with outstanding man defence. Camah Williams has been sent down to the D-League and is lighting it up so far with 18.0 points, 8.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. He will be a stud in a couple of years so getting him some experience in the seconds is a good idea.

November Player of the Month – Jimmy Forrest, Milwaukee Bucks – 30.1 points, 1.1 assists, 5.9 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 0.4 blocks per game.

November Rookie of the Month – Chris Jackson, Los Angeles Lakers – 11.6 points, 2.1 assists, 6.7 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.

There goes our perfect start as the Suns wiped the floor with us, getting out to a 17 point lead before our bench made it a bit more respectable, losing 112-107. Nashon Smith is finally starting and playing well, tonight putting up 26 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists as his running mate Reggie Dobbins putting up 19 points and 14 assists. Marcus Randle was our best with 29 points and 11 rebounds while Tristan Thompson filled in for foul hampered Andre Drummond with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Dallas Mavericks 8-1

As usual we vapourise the next team we play after a loss, getting out to a 49 point lead to cruise to a 126-78 victory over Minnesota. Andre Drummond destroyed Jonas Valanciunas for 21 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks while holding JV to 3/16 shooting. In fact, the whole Timberwolves team shot 30% from the field in a truly dominant defensive performance.

Dallas Mavericks 9-1

Miami outscored us 27-17 in the final term, too bad that we were up by 24 points at that stage as we still won easily 103-79. Tristan Thompson is becoming one our best players, tonight having 29 points and 16 rebounds off the bench as Marcus Randle fouled out in only 12 minutes guarding Nate Roberts. Andre Drummond nearly had a triple double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 8 blocks and on the other scale Matt Brown scored all of 1 point but handed out 10 assists. Nate Nixon was the Heat’s best player with 13 points which is probably all I have to say on the topic.

Dallas Mavericks 10-1

Andre Drummond was again outstanding with 24 points and 11 rebounds in our 131-101 blowout of Detroit. Marcus Randle decided to play Santa with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals, his highest ever assist total. John Johnson and Jrue Holiday combined for 40 points and 16 assists but we caused 25 Piston turnovers, causing us to shoot 19 more shots than our opposition.

Dallas Mavericks 11-1

It’s Jimmy Forrest’s breaking out party this season as the Bucks hand us our second loss of the season 117-109. Forrest torched us for 33 points and 9 rebounds on 12/18 shooting. Dion Waiters and Tate McKenzie also played well, combining for 43 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds (but nine turnovers). Matt Brown tried his best with 21 points and 12 assists but Jake Chase had a night to forget with 6 points and 6 fouls on 1/12 shooting. Ouch.

Dallas Mavericks 11-2

In our 126-99 win over Detroit Matt Brown left the game in the third quarter with a sore back and our doctors have told me that he is having severe back spasms, pretty much benching him for nearly two weeks. He finished the game with 13 points and 13 assists on 4/4 shooting. Iman Shumpert will now take the reigns as starting PG. Andre Drummond had 26 points and 9 rebounds while Jake Chase scored 30 points. He also kept John Johnson to a woeful 1/16 shooting for 12 points, going 9/10 from the line.

Dallas Mavericks 12-2

In his first start, Shump had an up and down game, going 2/6 from the field for 7 points, 11 assists, 3 steals and 5 turnovers but we got the win, beating San Antonio 113-98. Jake Chase was the stand out with 35 points while Marcus Randle put up 17 points and 12 rebounds. Jared Arenas bought a new house tonight, situated at the free throw line, going 14/27 from the charity stripe on his way to 30 points and 12 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 13-2

Next up is a home and home against Houston and we head to Houston first. I thought with Iman Shumpert guarding Kyrie Irving it might show him down but no, Irving still finished with 34 points but only 1 assist on the night. Matt Brown played which was surprising, coming off the bench for 10 points and 10 assists which was also surprising. I guess being young and fit has its advantages. Kevin Durant led the way for us with 25 points.

Dallas Mavericks 14-2

It’s back home to Dallas and we burst out of the gates against Houston, taking the first quarter 36-23. The second quarter was close but in the third it’s like they didn’t come out of the rooms as we outscore them 45-18 to take the game 130-90. Andre Drummond led the way with 29 points and 10 rebounds while Marcus Randle hauled in 21 rebounds and Iman Shumpert handed out 19 assists. Kyrie Irving was nullified to the tune of 12 points on 6/29 shooting.

Dallas Mavericks 15-2

Matt Brown isn’t quite 100% but that didn’t stop him from starting as we beat San Antonio 103-92 behind a blinder from Marcus Randle. Randle finished the game with 22 points and 22 rebounds and even though he shot 4/19 he went 14/21 from the line. Andre Drummond backed him up with 22 points and 8 rebounds. The Spurs’ best player was bench player Jon Mitchell who scored 18 points in only 18 minutes on 8/10 shooting.

Dallas Mavericks 16-2

**TRADE**

Chicago trade:
PF Robert Jackson
2024 2nd round pick

Oklahoma City trade:
SF James Swygart
SG Haven Roberson

Winner – Oklahoma City. It’s strange that the Bulls have given up on #4 pick Jackson so quickly as I have no heard anything about him being a distraction. Swygart isn’t really going to help because not only is he not the starter but he isn’t even the first SF off the bench. Big steal by the Thunder here.

Grr, we lose 119-111 to a very average Sacramento side as Lisandro Perez led the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds. It all happened even with DeMarcus Cousins fouling out in 25 minutes after only 10 points and 9 rebounds. Thomas Robinson took over with 23 points on 9/10 shooting. Jake Chase and Andre Drummond top scored for us with 24 points but both fouled out fairly early.

Dallas Mavericks 16-3

What a game. Marcus Randle fouls out in nine minutes. That’s right, six fouls in less than 10 minutes. It didn’t matter as we used a 48 point last quarter to blast San Antonio 145-109 as we shot 56% from the field. Kevin Durant led the way with 35 points and 14 rebounds on 11/17 shooting while a now healthy Matt Brown had 15 points, 18 assists, 6 rebounds and zero turnovers. Damian Lillard was the best for the Spurs with 33 points and 9 assists but we just annihilated them everywhere.

Dallas Mavericks 17-3

Sure Jake Chase scored 31 points and Andre Drummond and Kevin Durant tallied 29 points, our 137-98 win over the Lakers was all about Matt Brown who dished out a whopping 27 assists. He only scored 6 points but he was responsible for more than half of all of our scores. For the losers Josh Jackson and Joe Holmes combined for 43 points while #1 pick Chris Jackson had a decent game with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Dallas Mavericks 18-3

Up next we travel to Denver to take on Chris Drexler and company. It didn’t take long for us to stamp our dominance as we took a 33-19 first quarter lead to win the game 108-83. Kevin Durant top scored with 26 points while Jake Chase poured in 24 points. Chris Drexler top scored for the Nuggets with 17 points but the team shot 30% from the field, with Jon Eyles leading the way going 0/10.

Dallas Mavericks 19-3

I love having Jake Chase on our squad as not only does he score 34 points he also holds Murman Andronikov to only six points in our 104-90 win over Utah. Matt Brown was also stellar with 17 points and 15 assists. For the Jazz, Mark Lewis did his best with 24 points and 14 rebounds (but going 2/14 from the line) but Derrick Favors had a terrible shooting night, going 7/21 for 17 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks. Seriously, two makes in fourteen shots!

Dallas Mavericks 20-3

Our last game of the month is a revenge game against Sacramento, taking care of business 133-112. Andre Drummond is a beast with 31 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks while Kevin Durant scored 30 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and blocking four shots. Matt Brown had another blinder with 10 points, 25 assists and 6 rebounds with only two turnovers. He really is the best passing point guard in the league. DeMarcus Cousins made up for his previous game with 25 points and 13 rebounds but we shot 61% from the field which was just amazing.

Dallas Mavericks 21-3

We may have lost three games this month but 12 of the 16 games this month were away games so I’m not too disappointed. We only have a six game lead though as Milwaukee are at 22-9 and Utah, Golden State and Nevada are only on 11 losses. San Antonio are last and will probably be last for the rest of the season at 8-17.

In the East the Hornets are still right on our tail at 26-4 while Atlanta have shaken off the Dustin Harris curse to burst up to second at 25-8. Miami are last at 8-28 with company from Orlando (9-23) and New York (9-16).

I am well and truly eating crow on Chris Jackson, he really is ballin’ at the moment. I apologise CJ.

First Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. SF Lars Ray (Belgium), 19 years old, 6’6”, 206lbs
2. C Brian Caldwell (Missouri), Freshman, 6’9”, 245lbs
3. PF Robert Williams (Ohio), Sophomore, 6’9”, 222lbs
4. C Antonio Henderson (North Carolina), Freshman, 6’11”, 262lbs
5. SF Jamaal Lewis (Nevada), Sophomore, 6’10”, 213lbs

Thoughts – Lars is quite raw which is concerning for a 19 year old while Caldwell is a rebounding God. The only reason Caldwell isn’t number one is because he is way too undersized to be an NBA centre.

December Player of the Month – Mark Lewis, Utah Jazz – 25.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.8 steals and 2.8 blocks per game.

December Rookie of the Month – Chris Jackson, Los Angeles Lakers – 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.

We start 2024 with an easy 134-89 win over Nevada. Marcus Randle led the way with 28 points and 15 rebounds while our other young star Matt Brown had 18 points and 18 assists. We shot a whopping 58% from the field compared to the Neon’s 32%, with new recruit Ryan Garris having a shocker, going 0/8 for 2 points and fouling out in 18 minutes.

Dallas Mavericks 22-3

Kevin Durant is averaging his lowest point total since his rookie season (22.5 ppg) but he can still bring it, shown in our 130-118 victory over Philadelphia. Our captain went off for 37 points on 13/19 shooting while Jake Chase poured in 26 points. It’s strange that when Matt Brown notches 16 assists it’s only slightly above his 14.1 apg average on the season. Nathan Howard was the best for the Sixers with 22 points and 6 assists in only 24 minutes off the bench.

Dallas Mavericks 23-3

Another day, another score in the 130s as we beat Chicago 137-87 and this team is rolling. I never thought that these guys would click so well together so quickly. I know we have a talented team but talent alone doesn’t get you to 24-3. Andre Drummond had 30 points while Matt Brown had a perfect game, going 2/2 from the field, 1/1 from three, 2/2 from the line, 7 points, 20 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks and 0 turnovers. Simply phenomenal. Robert Arnold led the way for the Bulls with 19 points off the bench.

Dallas Mavericks 24-3

It’s our defence that is really doing the damage against opposing teams and tonight was no different as we held the Clippers to 36% from the field in a 130-83 win. Kevin Durant scored 30 points and Sean Gilmore added 14 points in 14 minutes after Jake Chase was benched because of foul trouble. Stefan Nitschke is finally starting but had a off night, going 4/12 from the field for 12 points.

Dallas Mavericks 25-3

Hell week rolls around once more with six games in seven nights and our first game is a 125-90 squashing of my old Memphis team. Well, it’s not really mine any more as John Wall is the only player left there who was around when I was GM. Andre Drummond led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds while Marcus Randle destroyed Marlon Haymon with 21 points and 20 rebounds. David Forney had a go tonight with 13 points off the bench. Michael Williams had 23 points on the night but Wall had a stinker with 11 points and only 3 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 26-3

Matt Brown only had 11 assists in our 128-90 win over Orlando so Marcus Randle took up the slack with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. It was a very uninteresting game as Antoine Martin, another one of my old favourites, had 19 points for the losers.

Dallas Mavericks 27-3

Game three in three nights was over after quarter time, as we got out to a 42-24 lead to win the game easily 118-86. Matt Brown was the star with another triple double with 19 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds as we out-rebounded the Cats 51-38. Harrison Barnes led the way with 19 points as Thomas Cooper was held to 14 points and 9 rebounds.

Dallas Mavericks 28-3

The Utah Jazz consists of Mark Lewis, Derrick Favors and a group of guys there to make up numbers. To show this team dominance, they combined for 61 points, 22 rebounds and 9 blocks in their 122-109 loss to us. Kevin Durant and Jake Chase got close with a combined 69 points, 9 rebounds and 1 block while Matt Brown had 17 points, 21 assists and 6 steals. Lewis and Favors combine on the season for 41.6 points, 22.1 rebounds, 4.9 blocks and 2.9 steals per game which is simply amazing.

Dallas Mavericks 29-3

Game five is a 130-101 win over Indiana as we were never challenged. Kevin Durant had 30 points and 11 rebounds, Jake Chase scored 28 points and Matt Brown threw in 25 points and 16 assists. Darrell Hampton went for 27 points and 9 rebounds but Alexander Verhaeren had only 5 points and when your best player only has 5 points it spells trouble.

Dallas Mavericks 30-3

I don’t think we have ever done it but we swept Hell Week after a 113-96 cruise past New York in the Big Apple. Marcus Randle won the player of the game with 20 points and 15 rebounds but Tristan Thompson was huge off the bench with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Alex Crawford had 21 points but only 4 assists as their starting PG.

Dallas Mavericks 31-3

After sweeping the Hell Week and currently sitting at 31-3, is it too early to start talking about ‘best record ever’?

In the match-up where both teams combine for a 65-8 record you know it is going to be a good game. Well, it wasn’t really as we got out to a 37-19 first quarter lead as we show New Orleans how is the boss with a 114-98 win. Andre Drummond destroyed Bryan Plowman for 37 points and 8 rebounds while Kevin Durant and Marcus Randle combined for 34 points and 28 rebounds. Anthony Davis and Bill Gearhart combined for 54 points and 16 rebounds but the team shot 43% from the field. After beating arguably our biggest threat by that much I’m really getting on the best record ever bandwagon.

Dallas Mavericks 32-3

Bad news though, Andre Drummond has strained an abdominal muscle and will be less than 100% for nearly two weeks. He will stay in the starting line-up but look for Tristan Thompson to get more minutes.

That is 17 wins in a row as we start slow but ramp up in the second quarter to beat Nevada 115-102. Kevin Durant was again on target with 32 points and 9 rebounds as we shot pretty poorly (for us) at 42% but our defence was again the deciding factor in the win. Ryan Garris played better than last time, scoring 19 points.

Dallas Mavericks 33-3

Do you remember when Phoenix were a real challenge to us? That is all in the past as our biggest lead against the Suns was 58 points as we absolutely vapourise them 144-91. Marcus Randle had 25 points and 10 rebounds but the benches were emptied really, really early. Tristan Thompson took advantage of the extra minutes with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Emmett Emerson led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds but turned it over five times.

Dallas Mavericks 34-3

Jimmy Forrest and the Bucks come to town and even though Andre Drummond is still injured he did a fantastic job against Forrest. The scoring leader was held to only 10 points and 7 rebounds as we won again 124-102. Marcus Randle had a field day with 32 points and 15 rebounds while Matt Brown was close to a triple double with 17 points, 22 assists and 8 rebounds. Dion Waiters held his own with 21 points.

Dallas Mavericks 35-3

This team is on absolute fire as we take care of the Heat 115-69 to take our winning streak to 20. Matt Brown is now a walking triple double machine with 14 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds as Kevin Durant and Marcus Randle combined for 42 points. Miami’s top scorer was Fred Blevins with 13 points which really shows how badly they were outplayed.

Dallas Mavericks 36-3

Marcus Randle celebrates his Player of the Week award with 39 points and 11 rebounds as we beat the Timberwolves 138-103. Matt Brown was also excellent with 14 points and 23 assists and that is already his seventh 20+ assist night. Tristan Thompson had 23 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks off the bench for the foul troubled Andre Drummond. The reason why Andre was in foul trouble is that Jonas Valanciunas had 32 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 37-3

The game against Portland was a bit of a scare, as the Blazers held a three point lead at three quarter time before we blew them out in the last to keep on rolling 116-103. Jake Chase took up the mantle with 31 points and Matt Brown poured in 6 points, 13 assists and 8 rebounds before fouling out. Superstar SG Earl Oliver showed his talent with 26 points but his running mate Kevin Epps (who is also a superstar in the making) went 4/15 for 17 points and 9 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 38-3

**TRADE**

Indiana trade:
SG Avery Bradley
2024 2nd round pick

Philadelphia trade:
PG Ernest Davis

Winner – Indiana. Davis is the better player and an underrated ball thief. He is also on an expiring contract while Bradley has two years left. Win-win by Indiana.

Kevin Durant had 32 points, Matt Brown added 24 points and 10 assists and we go on winning, beating Cleveland 137-110. Ron Winston is playing at an All Star level with 28 points but he is still shooting poorly at 11/23.

Dallas Mavericks 39-3

Our last game of January is an easy 127-91 victory over Oklahoma City. Matt Brown took out the player of the game with 13 points, 16 assists and 7 rebounds but it was Sean Gilmore who stood up, with 20 points (9/13 FG) in only 14 minutes. 13 shots in 14 minutes is pretty crazy but when you hit nine of them I guess you can keep shooting. The Thunder’s two best players (MKG and Russell Westbrook) combined for 12 points on 4/17 shooting.

Dallas Mavericks 40-3

We started the month at 21-3 and finished it at 40-3, winning all 19 games in January. All up we are on a 24 game winning streak, only nine games behind the 1971-72 LA Lakers. Obviously we are on top of the league, 12 games ahead of second placed Milwaukee and 15 games ahead of third placed Seattle. San Antonio are dead last at 14-22 and Kevin Love must be loving playing in Toronto now.

The Hornets are still behind us at 38-6 with Atlanta and Detroit are way in the distance. Miami and Orlando are still battling for last place with the Heat winning so far at 11-38.

Dallas Top Points
Kevin Durant – 23.2
Jake Chase – 19.5
Andre Drummond – 18.0

Dallas Top Assists
Matt Brown – 14.6
Iman Shumpert – 4.4
Royce White – 1.9

Dallas Top Rebounds
Marcus Randle – 11.2
Andre Drummond – 8.4
Kevin Durant – 5.9

Matt Brown is on track to break the single season record for assists. The current record holder is John Stockton at 1164, or 14.2 assists per game.

League Leaders
Points – Jimmy Forrest (MIL) – 27.6
Assists – Matt Brown (DAL) – 14.6
Rebounds – Mark Lewis (UTA) – 11.3
Blocks – Anthony Davis (NOH) – 3.9
Steals – Lewis Vines (NOH) – 2.7 (and four other players)
Efficiency – Anthony Davis (NOH) – 29.1

Rookie Leaders
Points – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 12.9
Assists – Eric McIntyre (DET) – 4.8
Rebounds – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 6.7
Blocks – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 1.8
Steals – Eric McIntyre (DET) – 2.2
Efficiency – Chris Jackson (LAL) -14.9

Second Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. (1) SF Lars Ray (Belgium), 19 years old, 6’6”, 206lbs
2. (4) C Antonio Henderson (North Carolina), Freshman, 6’11”, 262lbs
3. (3) PF Robert Williams (Ohio), Sophomore, 6’9”, 222lbs
4. (NR) PG Michael Taylor (Georgia), Sophomore, 6’2”, 155lbs
5. (2) C Brian Caldwell (Miisouri), Freshman, 6’9”, 245lbs

Thoughts – Another draft that isn’t that good with SGs as the first ranked one is 17 year old Vlado Prazina from Bosnia at #12 but he will probably rise because he is averaging a triple double in Bosnia. Ray is still the leader and his natural talent is to die for.

January Player of the Month – Kyrie Irving, Houston Rockets – 26.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 block per game.

January Rookie of the Month – Chris Jackson, Los Angeles Lakers – 12.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.7 blocks per game.

In our first game of February we had four players with double doubles as we extend our streak with a 125-83 win over the Thunder. Andre Drummond led the way with 19 points and 14 rebounds but Marcus Randle (17 points, 14 rebounds), Matt Brown (13 points, 12 assists) and Tristan Thompson (10 points, 16 rebounds in 20 minutes) helped out. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was the best for the losers with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists but Russell Westbrook only had 10 points.

Dallas Mavericks 41-3

It was the Chase and Brown show in our first stop of a home and home against Minnesota. Jake Chase had 39 points and Matt Brown handed out 23 assists as we beat the Wolves easily 127-93. Enrique Mendez has been outstanding this season in a position he is not used to (SG) and tonight had 21 points and 6 turnovers.

Dallas Mavericks 42-3

In our home game against Minnesota the next night we got out to a 20 point lead behind Kevin Durant’s 33 points and win #27 in a row was a certainty. Or was it? The Wolves stormed back in the fourth with a 39-26 win but luckily for us they came a single point short, as we won the game 109-108. Enrique Mendez was again fantastic with 28 points while Li-chi King had 24 points and 9 assists. If we are going to have a real run at this most wins in a row record we really need to put teams away.

Dallas Mavericks 43-3

In our 133-114 win over Houston I get the horrifying news that Kevin Durant has broken his elbow and will be out for probably five months. Great. The win was shallow after he went down after he went up for a block and got knocked over by Houston’s Leonard Hale. There wasn’t anything malicious in the play, it was just terribly bad luck. Andre Drummond had 42 points and 12 rebounds in the win but the team is in a sombre mood at the moment. Kyrie Irving had 31 points and 10 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 44-3

Sean Gilmore is now our starting SF. First assistant Luke Battier wanted Iman Shumpert to start at SF but that means our best PG off the bench would be Eric Bledsoe and coach Garnett didn’t want that so Shump is still our best guard off the bench.

We win our first game post Durant 119-94 over Boston as the whole team stood up for their captain. Andre Drummond will now be the focal point and tonight didn’t disappoint, putting up 36 points and 8 rebounds. Sean Gilmore did well in his first start with 11 points and 7 rebounds and held Raul Lopez to only 23 points on 6/20 shooting. Varlam Chavchavadze was the best for the Celtics with 27 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 45-3

That’s 30 wins in a row as we take care of Utah very easily 138-104 and we showed the world how incredibly deep this team is. Andre Drummond was again our best with 24 points (10/13 FG), 8 rebounds and 5 blocks while Marcus Randle played back-up with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Derrick Favors was great with 22 points and 14 rebounds but Mark Lewis had a stinker with only 10 points and 3 rebounds.

Dallas Mavericks 46-3

We blow out the Sixers 44-18 in the first quarter to take our 31st game in a row 121-92. Marcus Randle took the lead with 21 points and 18 rebounds while Matt Brown showed his sublime passing skills with 13 points and 20 assists. Ambros Padilla led the way for Philly with 17 points off the bench but after that first quarter it was a cake walk.

Dallas Mavericks 47-3

After Kevin Durant went down we knew it wouldn’t last, and finally we lost our fourth game of the season. Golden State got out to a 32-14 first quarter lead in a nearly exact replica of our last game but in reverse, as the Warriors stomped us 110-89. For some reason Paul George started at SF and had a terrible night, going 0/6 and helping Cederic Mapp score 20 points. The Buzzsaw, Ledaryl McMillian, showed his class with 32 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds while keeping Matt Brown to a 1/9 night and only six assists. Andre Drummond was our best with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks but we just lost our legs.

Dallas Mavericks 47-4

Well, at least we have the second best run of games with 31, two shy of the record.

Wow, that’s two losses in a row. The Clippers stayed with us all game and broke away at the end to win 106-102. Dionsio Mason torched Matt Brown for 30 points while Christopher de Castro had the Devil’s triple with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 11 turnovers. Matt Brown still had a good game with 17 points, 15 assists and 8 rebounds but fouled out. Andre Drummond made up for Marcus Randle’s 1/15 night with 29 points and 14 rebounds.

Dallas Mavericks 47-5

We get a little break as the All Star festivities roll around and first is the Slam Dunk Contest. Rookie Michael Graham from Miami came from second to beat Nevada’s Steve Smith in the final to take home the silverware. While in the Long Distance Shootout Steph Curry form Milwaukee dominated all night, only missing six points to win the final over New Orleans’ Chad Carney and Lewis Vines.

Now this is a showcase. The Sophomores scored at least 40 points in each quarter to totally demolish the Rookies 170-128. They shot 61% from the field and a mind bending 31/53 from three to break all kinds of records. Ledaryl McMillian was at the front with 44 points to win MVP while James McDaniel helped him out with 27 points and 10 assists. Kevin Epps off the bench had 32 points in 17 minutes as every second year player except #1 pick Rowan Taylor scored at least six points. Haven Roberson led the way with 27 points for the vanquished and even though the first year guys shot 54% from the field they had no response for the barrage from three point land.

I know we have lost our last two games but for a team that has a record of 47-5 only having one All Star is unforgivable. Marcus Randle was our only participant and played 13 minutes as the East won easily 137-120. Paul Orvis won the All Star MVP with 27 points while John Wall helped him out with 17 points and 12 assists. Jimmy Forrest was a dominant force in the middle with 34 points and 13 rebounds but the West only had three players in double figures, possibly karma for neglecting the Dallas Mavericks.

Western Conference All Star Starters
Kyrie Irving, Houston Rockets
Earl Oliver, Portland Trailblazers
Christopher de Castro, Los Angeles Clippers
Derrick Favors, Utah Jazz
Jimmy Forrest, Milwaukee Bucks

Team with most All Stars – Golden State Warriors with two (Cederic Mapp, Ledaryl McMillian)
Teams represented – Eleven (Golden State, LA Clippers, Utah, Milwaukee, Portland, Houston, Denver, LA Lakers, Dallas, Sacramento, San Antonio).

Eastern Conference All Star Starters
John Wall, Memphis Grizzlies
Bradley Beal, Atlanta Hawks
Paul Orvis, Toronto Raptors
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
Eryk Charnowski, Miami Heat

Team with most All Stars – Boston (Raul Lopez, Varlam Chavchavadze) and Cleveland (Brooks Badu, Ron Winston) with two.
Teams represented – Ten (Boston, Cleveland, Toronto, New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, Memphis, Chicago, Washington).

The trade deadline comes around and there were some pretty big deals but nothing world shattering.

Charlotte trade:
C Enes Kanter

LA Lakers trade:
PF John Henson
2024 2nd round pick

Winner – LA Lakers. Jeff Cunningham has torn his Achilles and will be out for a long time so they wanted another starting C to hold the fort. I don’t know why they didn’t just start Bryce Metcalf but Kanter does the job until Cunningham comes back.

Chicago trade:
PG Brandon Knight

Brooklyn trade:
SG Austin Rivers
2024 2nd round pick

Winner – Brooklyn. Even though Rivers has been doing a great job at PG for the Nets (9.3 apg) they wanted someone who really knows how to play the point. Knight is that person and he is a great defender to boot.

We don’t let the losing streak get to three games as we beat up the Clippers 121-84 and Andre Drummond is enraged that he wasn’t invited to the All Star game with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Brown had 14 points and 17 assists and Sean Gilmore (who is now starting) had 17 points and 7 rebounds. All Star Christopher de Castro had a nice game with 21 points and 6 assists and our old friend James Harden contributed 22 points in 21 minutes off the bench backing up Stefan Nitschke.

Dallas Mavericks 48-5

I’m surprised how easily we took out the 40-18 Hawks, in Atlanta to boot. We beat them in every quarter to win 116-92. I love seeing this new chaotic Andre Drummond, who believes that he can destroy everyone who he battles against, putting up 32 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals against the very good Demond Lewis. Sean Gilmore is making that starting SF position his own with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Raoul Dumas was the best for the Hawks with 21 points but Brad Beal had a shocker with a 2/7 night for five points.

Dallas Mavericks 49-5

Great, in one of his best games of his season Tristan Thompson sprained his wrist and will be injured for over a week. TT had 22 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks off the bench after Marcus Randle fouled out guarding Donte Rock as we beat Brooklyn 115-85. Andre Drummond vapourised LeRoy Jones for 27 points and 8 rebounds on 13/17 shooting. Newly acquired Brandon Knight was the best for the Nets with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 50-5

Fifty wins in only fifty five games, we are in front of the 1995-96 Bulls for the best record ever.

Speaking of the Bulls, we blasted them 122-100 on an away trip as four of our guys were over 20 points. Marcus Randle was the leader with 26 points and 13 rebounds but Andre Drummond (24 points), Jake Chase (26 points, 9 rebounds) and Sean Gilmore (20 points) held their own. Of course Matt Brown was handing them gimmes with 17 assists. Wesley Field was the best for the Bulls with 26 points and 8 rebounds and it’s really good to see him mature after his dummy spits when we were together in Memphis.

Dallas Mavericks 51-5

Great, just great. In our 129-105 revenge win over Golden State Sean Gilmore strained his calf and will be unable to play for two weeks. Our SFs are dropping like flies. Jake Chase had 33 points and Matt Brown handed out 25 assists in the win. He kept Ledaryl McMillian to a fairly quiet night with 18 points and 10 assists. Willis Owens led the way for the Warriors with 25 points.

Dallas Mavericks 52-5

Royce White is now our starting SF.

White had a below average night but we still won, beating the Thunder 100-84. White shot 1/8 from the field but still ended up with 3 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists as Matt Brown fouled out in only 22 minutes trying to guard Russell Westbrook, who had 23 points. Iman Shumpert filled in for Brown nicely with 18 points and 8 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 53-5

So at the end of the month were we dropped two games we have a 14 game lead over second placed Milwaukee and pretty much sewn up the first place in the West. The Lakers are down the bottom (where they belong, come at me Laker fans) at 20-33 and would love a second #1 pick in a row.

In the East the Hornets have dropped off our pace and are at 49-10 with Detroit way behind at 39-19. Miami have also broken away from the pack in the opposite direction at 14-47.

Dallas Top Points
Kevin Durant – 23.0
Andre Drummond – 19.7
Jake Chase – 19.0

Dallas Top Assists
Matt Brown – 14.6
Iman Shumpert – 4.3

Rebounds – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 6.4
Blocks – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 1.7
Steals – Eric McIntyre (DET) – 1.9
Efficiency – Chris Jackson (LAL) – 13.9

Third Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. (1) SF Lars Ray (Belgium), 19 years old, 6’6”, 206lbs
2. (2) C Antonio Henderson (North Carolina), Freshman, 6’11”, 262lbs
3. (4) PG Michael Taylor (Georgia), Sophomore, 6’2”, 155lbs
4. (5) C Brian Caldwell (Missouri), Freshman, 6’9”, 245lbs
5. (NR) SF Jamaal Lewis (Nevada), Sophomore, 6’10”, 213lbs

Thoughts – Vlado Prazina has jumped into the top ten at #10 and he will continue to rise. I’m still not sold on Ray and Henderson as neither of them have really improved during the season.
