January Player of the Month – Kyrie Irving, Houston Rockets – 28.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.
January Rookie of the Month – Lance Ellis, San Diego Riders – 13.6 points,6.2 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.0 blocks per game.
I hold a team meeting to talk about the rumours around our owner. Everyone is here, from our players to coaches to training staff. I tell them not to worry, I’m sure Mr English has had people come at him before and that he wouldn’t be where he is now if he wasn’t above board. Inside I’m not that confident, because if it did happen it happened on Maverick turf and I didn’t see any of it. To make matters worse, if he is found guilty this team is going down with it, me included.
The rumours and constant media scrutiny must have got to the guys because we got hammered 115-93 to Nevada on our home court. Ryan Garris was excellent with 30 points while Darren Banks had 18 points and 14 assists. We really weren’t in the game as the guys’ heads were elsewhere with Joe Duggins having the best game with 17 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.
Dallas Mavericks 39-6
We get back on the winning train with a 105-89 victory over the Sixers. Andre Drummond was our star with 24 points and 11 rebounds but Marcus Randle has been in a bit of a funk lately, tonight only having 10 points and 6 rebounds. Cedric White, the last guy on Philadelphia’s list had 16 points and 13 rebounds off the bench tonight. Good for him.
Dallas Mavericks 40-6
Urgh, four away games in four nights. First up is Memphis, Tennessee where Andre Drummond and Sean Gilmore both score 27 points as we rout the Grizzlies 115-74. Gilmore got his points on a ridiculous 9/10 shooting. Memphis’ top point scorer was John Wall with all of 12 points. Dallas to Memphis – 452 miles.
Dallas Mavericks 41-6
Next up, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Memphis to Oklahoma City – 467 miles, two days – 919 miles. Jacob Alexander played just less than 20 minutes last game so was fired up to make amends and did so wonderfully with 33 points as we beat up the Thunder 110-96. Joe Duggins is becoming a very important piece of this team while Tristan Thompson is still out and showed it with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Russell Westbrook was again their best (like usual) with 17 points but turned the ball over six times. He is 35 years old; I don’t know what the Thunder are going to do without him.
Dallas Mavericks 42-6
Game three Las Vegas, Nevada. Oklahoma City to Las Vegas – 1,114 miles, three days – 2,033 miles. It’s strange that the Neon beat us on our home court and now we beat them with a 122-105 lead from the front victory. Marcus Randle finally woke up with 26 points and 13 rebounds as five bench players were in double figures to take the total of Mavericks in double figures to nine. Ryan Garris wasn’t as hot as last time, going 9/20 for 19 points and 9 rebounds as Greg Lavin, Steve Smith and Kevin Seraphin combined for 39 points off the bench.
Dallas Mavericks 43-6
Our last game in our ‘four aways in four days’ is all the way in Miami, Florida. Las Vegas to Miami – 2,529 miles, four days – 4,562 miles. The private jet is getting a workout. Well, we might as well use it as much as possible with these rumours going around we might not have it next season. To the game, it was a topsy-turvy battle, as both teams got out to a double digit lead at some stage. Unfortunately for us Miami’s double digit lead was at the end as they beat us 111-101. Art Haynes was the best of the bunch with 26 points and 9 rebounds off the bench as all five Heat starters were in double figures. Jacob Alexander was our best with 20 points but the Heat shot 37/53 from the foul line as all five of our starters fouled out. Crazy.
Dallas Mavericks 43-7
Our last game before the All Star weekend was a 133-102 smattering of San Antonio as Marcus Randle and Sean Gilmore poured in 22 points each while Matt Brown fed them nicely with 19 assists. Lamont Nelson scored the most for the Spurs with 21 points but he needed 27 shots to get them so he wasn’t the standout that went to Jermaine Gadzuric who had a much more efficient time with 21 points on 10/11 shooting.
Dallas Mavericks 44-7
**TRADE**
Atlanta trade:
PF Mike Bryant
2025 2nd round pick
Philadelphia trade:
PG Tim Westbrooks
Winner – Atlanta. At only 20 years old and still a rookie Westbrooks has oodles of potential. He will learn from one of the best in Raoul Dumas until he can stand by himself. Bryant is a very average player, not bad but not good. Strange fact – Atlanta have nine rookies on their squad and only six non-rookies.
Onto the All Star weekend and as usual the Slam Dunk Contest and the Long Distance Shootout are on first. Nevada’s Steve Smith comes from behind to snatch the glory from Cleveland’s Paul Bickerstaf who couldn’t finish any of his dunks and got the lowest score he is possible to get. Talk about anti-climactic. The Long Distance Shootout final was also a bit of a fizzer, as Charlotte’s John Bailey romped it home with 21 points, seven more than second placed Gary Gravitt from Miami.
The Rookie showcase was a great performance, as both teams were tied at three quarter time and actually putting in the effort to try and win. The second year guys held their nerve though, busting out the last term 43-33 to win the game 156-146. James Blakemore took home the MVP award with 33 points and 15 assists while Charles Means (27 points, 9 rebounds), Tiburcio Tommasini (29 points) and my old friend Reggie Blake (23 points) all chipped in. Michael Taylor was a one man wrecking crew with 44 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists in the loss while Chad Gaines had 31 points on 12/14 shooting. In fact, the rookies shot a sizzling 60% from the field but like last time they couldn’t stop the sophomores’ three point shooting, hitting 19 of 42 beyond the arc.
In a more subdued All Star game, the West got out to a 63-46 point half time lead and held on from there, keeping the East to one of the lowest scores in an All Star game I have seen in a while, winning 127-100. Enrique Mendez won the All Star MVP award with 28 points and 6 rebounds as Jimmy Forrest helped out after Mark Lewis decided to limit himself to 18 minutes with 20 points. For the losers (who shot 38% from the field) Nashon Smith led the way with 19 points and 9 assists but they just couldn’t get it back, no matter how hard they tried. In a pretty rude gesture, the team with the best record in the league (us) only had one participant in Andre Drummond. If San Diego can have two and they are sitting second last at 16-33 either Marcus Randle or Matt Brown should have got in.
Western Conference All Star Starters –
Ledaryl McMillian, Golden State Warriors
Stefan Nitschke, San Diego Riders
Enrique Mendez, Minnesota Timberwolves
Chris Drexler, Denver Nuggets
Mark Lewis, Utah Jazz
Teams with most representatives – Utah (Mark Lewis, Derrick Favors) and San Diego (Stefan Nitschke and Christopher de Castro) with two.
Teams represented – Ten (Utah, San Diego, Minnesota, Denver, Golden State, Dallas, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Houston).
Eastern Conference All Star Starters –
Nashon Smith, Orlando Magic
John Johnson, Detroit Pistons
Darrell Hampton, Indiana Pacers
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
DeMarcus Cousins, New York Knicks
Teams with most representatives – Indiana (Darrell Hampton, Alexander Verhaeren) and Toronto (Paul Orivs, Matias Perez) with two.
Teams represented – Ten (Indiana, Toronto, New Orleans, New York, Detroit, Orlando, Memphis, Philadelphia, Washington and Boston).
There is no after break hangover as we whallop the Kings 123-84. Marcus Randle had 29 points and 14 rebounds but was still only the second best player on the court as Matt Brown added to his triple double cabinet with 15 points, 17 assists, 11 rebounds and 0 turnovers. Lisandro Perez had 24 points but without DeMarcus Cousins this is very much a rebuilding year for Sacramento.
Dallas Mavericks 45-7
The trade deadline is nearly upon us and one of the biggest trades ever has occurred.
Nevada trade:
PF Chad Barrow
New York trade:
PF Hayletts Smith
Winner – Nevada. Barrow is decent but Smith is good. Sure Smith has double the price tag but when Barrow is only owed $1.5 million it’s not that much.
Milwaukee trade:
C Jimmy Forrest
San Diego trade:
SF Christopher de Castro
2025 2nd round pick
Winner – San Diego. Both teams push a quality player to the bench (Milwaukee with Corry Hackworth and San Diego with Ernest Jameson) but this is win for the Riders. Having Forrest and Lance Ellis as a starting frontcourt is going to be the worst rebounding duo ever but they can score in bunches. De Castro is a great all around player but the Bucks now have raw Dylan Callier starting at C which isn’t going to win many games.
One of the biggest trades I have ever seen, as Forrest will bring a huge boost to the Riders’ fanbase. He is the best scorer in the league, hands down, and will be great paired with Stefan Nitschke.
The Bucks weren’t finished at the trade deadline, making another great deal.
Orlando trade:
PG Kendall Marshall
Brooklyn trade:
SG Terrence Ross
Winner – Orlando. The Magic didn’t need Marshall with the addition of Nashon Smith so dealing him for a starting SG was a great idea. Not so much for the Nets, as they still have Brandon Knight starting at PG with Marshall again relegated to the bench. At 32 years old, it’s disappointing that Marshall only had five years as a starter because when he was given the minutes four of those five years he averaged a double double with points and assists.
Milwaukee trade:
SF Corry Hackworth
Atlanta trade:
PG Raoul Dumas
Winner – Atlanta, just. On the surface it looks like the Bucks got another good deal but adding Dumas to starting PG Tate McKenzie is going to cause headaches. Neither are big enough to play SG so one will have to come off the bench. This moves frees up starting minutes for gun rookie Tim Westbrooks for the Hawks to see what he can do with the keys to the team.
We just can’t beat the Hornets this season which is worrying, going down 106-99 after surrendering a 26-18 last quarter. Anthony Davis was his usual best with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks while Lewis Vines top scored with 21 points. Andre Drummond was the high scorer for the game with 26 points and 11 rebounds as we shot a paltry 36% from the field. Next time we’ll beat them.
Dallas Mavericks 45-8
We get back to our winning best with a whole team effort by beating the Celtics 122-93. Sean Gilmore led the way with 19 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds but five other Dallas players were in double figures. Raul Lopez had 20 points on 20 shots but Chav-chav had a shocker, shooting 2/12 for 9 points and 10 assists.
Dallas Mavericks 46-8
The first quarter was all ours, getting out to a 30-12 lead. After that the game was all Indiana, taking the second term 30-19 and the third 36-24 to take the game 105-99. Alexander Verhaeren was excellent with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists while the Pacers’ other All Star Darrell Hampton had 19 points on 6/18 shooting. Andre Drummond and Marcus Randle combined for 31 points and 28 rebounds but we again shot badly, going 38% from the field and only shooting eight free throws for the game.
Dallas Mavericks 46-9
We finish the month with a 104-81 brush past of Milwaukee after we outscore the Bucks 55-33 in the second half. Marcus Randle was our best with 36 points and 10 rebounds while Jacob Alexander pops his head up for 21 points and 7 rebounds. The two new Milwaukee recruits had a disastrous night, with Christopher de Castro having 14 points and 7 rebounds and Raoul Dumas going 0/15 from the field for 0 points and 5 fouls. In Dumas’ four games as the starting PG for the Bucks he has gone 15/45 from the field for 39 points, 17 rebounds, 18 assists and 18 fouls. Not a good start.
Dallas Mavericks 47-9
At the end of the month we have opened up a nine game lead over Utah, who at 38-18 are a game ahead of Houston. Oklahoma City have taken the lead at the bottom with a 14-44 record while San Diego have won a few games with Jimmy Forrest on board.
We still lead the Hornets, who at 45-14 have a five game lead over the surprising Sixers. Really, I thought these guys were going to be on the opposite end of the ladder. Atlanta are still last at 12-50 while my two old teams are right behind them with Memphis at 14-46 and New York sitting at 15-40.

Third Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. (1) PG Marius White (Pepperdine), Freshman, 5’11”, 189lbs
2. (NR) SF Jack Dawkins (Fairfield), Freshman, 6’9”, 245lbs
3. (NR) SG Mike Bickerstaf (Illinois), Freshman, 6’6”, 186lbs
4. (5) SG Henry Vining (Kent State), Sophomore, 6’8”, 195lbs
5. (3) SG Edmund Stinson (Temple), Freshman, 6’6”, 197lbs
Thoughts – This is not a draft if you want a big man, as there are only one PF and one C in the top 15 players. I think this is going to be similar to what we see on draft night, with David Greer somewhere up the top instead of Stinson.
