New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

January Player of the Month – Enrique Mendez, Minnesota Timberwolves – 32.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.

January Rookie of the Month – Mike Bickerstaf, Oklahoma City Thunder – 21.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.0 blocks per game.

The Neon come to town on the first day of February and leave with their tails between their legs as we smash them 120-89. Victor Jones was again the high man with 20 points and 8 rebounds as we had seven players in double figures in a great team effort. Ryan Garris, that guy that was drafted after Raul Lopez, led the way for Nevada with 22 points but there wasn’t much else.

Dallas Mavericks 21-24

**TRADE**

Philadelphia trade:
C Mike Lingle

Sacramento trade:
2026 1st round pick

Winner – Philadelphia. The Kings are currently sitting at 18-26, fourth last in the Western Conference. Lingle isn’t even that good, he is an above average defensive centre let down by his offensive game and will never be much more than a fifth starter.

Speaking of the Sixers, we smash them the next night at home 128-105 as again we have a great balanced attack. Steve Anderson led the way but five other Mavericks were in double figures, aided by Changa Hendricks’ 14 assists. Jared Arenas is not starting any more now that Dustin Harris is in the squad which is a huge mistake but that didn’t stop him from scoring 22 points in 26 minutes. Andre Drummond fouled out in 21 minutes with only 3 points to his name.

Dallas Mavericks 22-24

We were never going to beat the Hornets on their home ground, especially with Anthony Davis having a chip on his shoulder because of our win in the NBA Finals. Davis had 22 points, 17 rebounds and 8 blocks in the game as we went down 111-93 in a very uneventful game. Jack Dawkins was our best with 19 points and 6 assists and even though he is scoring well I’m really impressed by his passing abilities which helps his Lebron comparisons.

Dallas Mavericks 22-25

After our 111-102 loss to OKC where we came back from a 23 point deficit in the last quarter to come up short, Kemba Walker thought that he deserved more court time and told everyone about it. I don’t like this kind of behaviour and told him if he has one more outburst like this he should consider looking for a new job. Rookie of the Year favourite Mike Bickerstaf led the way with 29 points and 9 rebounds, helped by six other Thunder players in double figures. Victor Jones was our best with 19 points and 9 rebounds but was undone by Jack Dawkins’ 3/18 shooting night.

Dallas Mavericks 22-26

Kemba Walker gets his chance after Changa Hendricks fouls out and puts it to good use with 14 points and 10 assists but it wasn’t enough as the Neon got their revenge with a 121-109 win. The reason why Hendricks and Walker fouled out was Greg Lavin who had 26 points and 9 assists from the PG position which is not his natural position. Victor Jones went 9/13 from the field for 26 points but had zero rebounds. That’s right, a centre playing in the middle of the key had zero rebounds. Yuck.

Dallas Mavericks 22-27

In another ‘defence optional’ game where there was six players from both sides with 20 points or more we had the stamina to get past Miami 135-122. Both teams shot above 54% from the field but we did better. Changa Hendricks was our best with 21 points and 10 assists and even though Jack Dawkins had 22 points on 7/11 shooting he turned the ball over 9 times. It’s sometimes easy to forget that he is just a rookie, and a young one at that. Keith Selden, Art Haynes and Eryk Charnowski combined for 82 points in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 23-27

Our last game before the All Star break was a disappointing one, where we let a two point lead at three quarter time end up as a ten point defeat in the end, going down 112-102 to Houston. We held Kyrie Irving to 5/21 shooting for only 15 points but their depth killed us with seven players in double figures. Victor Jones had 25 points and a whopping (for him) 12 rebounds, helped out by Jack Dawkins’ 27 points and 6 assists where he hit 8 three pointers. Much better game for Jack.

Dallas Mavericks 23-28

A day before the All Star weekend Brian Jenkins and Kemba Walker are seen having a very heated argument which ended up in shoving and then teammates being forced to intervene. I told Kemba that if he put a toe out of line again he was gone and he didn’t even last a month. I trade him and our second round pick for Atlanta’s second round pick this year which in all probability will be the first in the second round. In comes Iman Shumpert, the guy I have got rid of and then brought back so many times I can’t really remember and he slots in as our seventh man.

I can’t remember the last time we had a participant in either the slam dunk contest or the long distance shootout and again we are left out in the cold. Miami’s Michael Graham was lucky to get into the final of the Dunk Contest, tying with OKC’s Steve Smith but going through because Smith needed more attempts on his dunks. It worked for Graham as he beat Chicago’s Dereck Crumble by only three points to take the title. In the Long Distance Shootout, it was the opposite with Brooklyn’s Tyler Gainous leading from start to finish with a massive 24 points in the final to beat Raul Lopez and Charles Gaines.

We finally have a rookie game player in Jack Dawkins who started at SF and nearly had a devil’s triple double with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 8 turnovers as the second year guys led from start to finish with a 149-127 win. Michael Taylor took the honours with 32 points and 9 assists and he is looking like the next big thing in the league. Vlado Prazina backed him up with 23 points and 8 assists and Lars Ray contributed 23 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Cort Majishun was the top scorer for the Rookies with 22 points and 8 assists as Terry McKenzie had 16 points and Chris Jones put up 15 points from the bench. Neither Kenneth Long nor Art Stevenson were selected for the team.

Wow, what a crazy score line. The East’s lowest quarter total was 38 points and even though the West scored 145 points they still got beaten by over 20 points, losing 171-145. Hell, I could do a write up for you but it would be better to just show you to the scoresheet.

Image

Western Conference – teams with most players – Utah (Mark Lewis, Derrick Favors) and Phoenix (Emmett Emerson, Reggie Dobbins) with two.

Eastern Conference – teams with most players – Washington (James McDaniel, Rowan Taylor) and Toronto (Paul Orvis, Matias Perez) with two.

Coming off his All Star appearance Jeff Cunningham goes to town on us, hitting 13/14 free throws on his way to 23 points and 9 rebounds as the Lakers pummel us 124-99. Michael Taylor had 22 points in the win as well. Jack Dawkins needs to cut his turnover rate but he was still excellent with 26 points and 8 rebounds while Ernest Jameson hits all of his six shots for 14 points off the bench.

Dallas Mavericks 23-29

**TRADE**

Memphis trade:
SG Jacob Alexander
2026 2nd round pick

Toronto trade:
SF Danny McArdle

Winner – Memphis. Even though Alexander is the better player the Raptors are still going with their 6’0” Perez/5’11” Crawford backcourt which won’t win you much down the stretch. Alexander would be great at SG and really balance the team but they have him coming off the bench. McArdle was lighting up the D-League and has been thrust into the starting line-up to see if he has the chops to run with the pros.

The Pacers are absolutely rapped that we have been struggling lately as they have our first round draft pick and they love it when we go down to them 113-87. Darrell Hampton showed Jack Dawkins what it’s like to be a superstar with 42 points and 7 rebounds as Indiana shoots 51% and limits us to only 36%. Dawkins is our top scorer with 16 points but went 4/12 from the field to get those points.

Dallas Mavericks 23-30

It seems the wheels have fallen off the Dallas wagon as we have gone 3-12 in the last 15 games and are really starting to bottom out. I guess the Pacers’ gamble will pay off for them but I still like having Dawkins instead of a top five pick this season. Also, who would have thought that the Alexander/McArdle trade was the only one at the deadline? Like, not even a small scrub for scrub deal.

Great, what a waste of a game. We got out to a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter before Raul Lopez went berserk and scored 20 points in eight minutes to snatch the win away from us, as the Celtics squeeze past us 114-111. They outscored us 40-25 in the last term as Lopez scored 35 points for the game. Jack Dawkins had his usual up and down game, putting up 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 turnovers while getting torched by Lopez. Victor Jones had a better game, going 10/13 for 23 points and 9 rebounds.

Dallas Mavericks 23-31

Phew, I thought with our plummet down the ladder we would lose to the 4-51 Hawks but even after a spirited comeback from Atlanta we held our nerve to win 98-91. Changa Hendricks was our best with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals as six Mavericks players were in double figures. Borut Peschat led the way for the hopeless Hawks with 21 points as Chris Jones put up 14 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 24-31

Our last game of the month is a 114-106 win over Seattle as we got out to a 35 point lead in the third term. “But Yaxley, why was it only an eight point win?” I hear you ask. Well, the Sonics went on a 49-29 last quarter tear to nearly give me a heart attack. Victor Jones was our best with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in the perfect big man role with Steve Anderson adding 21 points. Travis Grigsby had 31 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and was the major reason for the comeback, hitting four three pointers in the final term.

Dallas Mavericks 25-31

With a little upswing at the end we are now in tenth spot again in the West, surprisingly only five games out of the eight. With Minnesota, Los Angeles and Nevada broken away from the pack there are seven teams all within two games of each other fighting for the seventh and eighth position. I would love it if we could sneak into the playoffs as we wouldn’t be giving up a lottery pick. Denver are still at the bottom at 17-33 and there were very loud rumblings of Chris Drexler being traded but nothing came of it.

The Hawks upped their winning percentage from 4.5% to 6.8% with two wins that month but are still staring down the barrel of the worst record in history at 5-44. New Orleans have opened up a little gap from Toronto at 43-17 with the Raptors at 38-20.

Dallas Top Points
Victor Jones – 17.5
Jack Dawkins – 15.9
Shawn Latimer – 15.0

Dallas Top Assists
Changa Hendricks – 7.5
Jack Dawkins – 4.2
Kemba Walker – 4.0

Dallas Top Rebounds
Joe Duggins – 7.0
Shawn Latimer – 5.9
Victor Jones – 5.9

League Leaders
Points – Ledaryl McMillian (GSW) – 29.6
Assists – Darcel Settles (SAS) – 10.7
Rebounds – Anthony Davis (NOH) – 10.4
Blocks – Anthony Davis (NOH) – 4.1
Steals – Jay Warren (HOU) – 2.8
Efficiency – Enrique Mendez (MIN) – 29.4

Rookie Leaders
Points – Mike Bickerstaf (OKC) – 19.5
Assists – Chris Jones (ATL) – 6.0
Rebounds – Terry McKenzie (NYK) – 7.6
Blocks – Joe Moore (DET) – 1.0
Steals – Chris Jones (ATL) – 1.4
Efficiency – Mike Bickerstaf (OKC) – 16.5

Third Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. (1) C Schuyler Vanderwerken (Netherlands), 18 years old, 6’9”, 257lbs
2. (5) SG Phillip Rude (Gardner-Webb), Freshman, 6’6”, 189lbs
3. (3) SG Kelly Pryor (USC), Freshman, 6’8”, 204lbs
4. (NR) SG Curtis Anderson (Colorado), Freshman, 6’5”, 198lbs
5. (4) SG Jason London (Dayton), Freshman, 6’5”, 189lbs

Thoughts – Another guard heavy draft but there is plenty of depth here. Maybe not as good as last season but there should be enough for everyone in the lottery if they pick correctly. It will be interesting to see who has the best career out of the four SGs in the top five.

Time for my recap of the six draftees that I have been following.

#35 PF Terry McKenzie, New York Knicks – 14.2 points, 0.7 assists, 7.6 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.5 blocks

He is a great rebounder already but he could be one of the best in the league. I like his defence as well and even though he will never be an All Defence member he is good enough. His shooting percentages are also very good, so all in all I really like what McKenzie is doing so far in New York, so is the Knicks fans who have taken him under the wing as a fan favourite. He was a Rookie game starter for the rookies.

#17 PG Cort Majishun, Memphis Grizzlies – 13.8 points, 5.9 assists, 2.6 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.2 blocks

Cort has really come into his own this month, winning February’s RotM award. Coming out of college he looked like a shoot first type of PG but I never thought he would have the potential to give Ledaryl McMillian a run for his money as the best scoring guard in the league. His teammates love him as well, so don’t be surprised if he stays with the Grizzlies for a long, long time. He was a Rookie game starter.

#4 SG Chris Jones, Atlanta Hawks – 13.4 points, 6.0 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 0.0 blocks

His all around game has come to the forefront but he has had a few run ins with his coach about their abysmal season. It’s hard for Jones to be motivated about the season when the Hawks are staring down the worst season in history but to his credit the Wizard has played his heart out. I can see a Dwyane Wade type career for Jones, someone who can score in the 20s but also rebound and pass extremely well. He was a Rookie game reserve.

#41 SF Jack Dawkins, Dallas Mavericks – 15.9 points, 4.2 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 0.3 steals, 0.2 blocks

After a stint in the D-League Jack has made up for lost time. Sure he turns the ball over too much and sure he doesn’t always shoot the right shot but he is really trying to improve on an already scary good future. A steal by the Mavericks from Indiana and has been heard saying that he has a grudge against the Pacers for giving up on him so quickly. The Lebron James comparisons are still on the mark which is bad news for the rest of the league. He was a Rookie game starter.

#47 C Art Stevenson, Boston Celtics – 4.1 points, 0.5 assists, 1.9 rebounds, 0.2 steals, 0.2 blocks

Another player with more potential than first thought, Art has been stuck on Boston’s bench all season. He will never be a top flight scorer but could be a ten rebound a game player which is becoming rarer with every season. He has the tools to be a quality scorer but it’s up to him to get there.

#13 SG Kenneth Long, Miami Heat – 3.5 points, 1.5 assists, 1.3 rebounds, 0.1 steals, 0.0 blocks

Yes the Heat have Ross Lampley at SG and they have a very set starting five but for a player with Long’s talents he shouldn’t be stuck in the dog house. I’m sure that if Miami actually gives him a go he will produce but it won’t be this season at least. He should be in the D-League tearing that up.

February Player of the Month – Ledaryl McMillian, Golden State Warriors – 31.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.8 assists, 2.6 steals and 0.9 blocks per game.

February Rookie of the Month – Cort Majishun, Memphis Grizzlies – 19.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.2 blocks per game.

It was Chav-chav’s turn to beat us for the Celtics as the elite SG had 34 points and 5 rebounds as the Celtics got out to a 23 point lead before taking the win 114-104 with a flourish from our bench guys. Raul Lopez wasn’t too shabby either with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Jack Dawkins was our best with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists while shooting well. Otherwise, not much.

Dallas Mavericks 25-32

Kyrie Irving had 29 points and 7 assists but we stole the game from the Rockets 113-107 as Jack Dawkins is becoming my favourite player on the team, tonight having 26 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists but also turning the ball over six times but that’s a rookie for you. Five other Dallas players were in double figures as we won from start to finish.

Dallas Mavericks 26-32

I’m pretty sure the Bucks are regretting trading away Jimmy Forrest as Christopher de Castro has been good but not to the level that Forrest has been. He did hold Jack Dawkins to only 3/16 shooting but Joe Duggins brought it from the bench with 19 points and 11 rebounds as we won again with a 35-20 last quarter flurry, final score 108-94. Shawn Latimer was in foul trouble all night and lucky for the Bucks because he had 17 points in 13 minutes.

Dallas Mavericks 27-32

We seem to play in spurts, winning three and then losing four. Win four and then lose three. Well that’s three wins as we knock over the Jazz 118-110. We seem to be the fourth quarter specialist, winning this last term 35-22 to steal the win. Victor Jones had 20 points and only 3 rebounds but was propped up by Joe Duggins’ 12 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Mark Lewis shot 5/10 from the foul line which is practically Lewis Vines (career 92.5% foul shooter) for 23 points and 15 rebounds but was hampered by foul trouble and we went on that run in the last quarter when Lewis was fouled out.

Dallas Mavericks 28-32

Even though Lars Ray scored 26 points he needed 28 shots to get them while their second best player, Donte Rock, went 7/17 for 19 points and 10 rebounds but again Shawn Latimer fouled out an opposing PF. If it wasn’t for Steve Anderson’s 24 points and 9 rebounds Latimer would have taken the player of the game award with 23 points, 9 rebounds and great defence.

Dallas Mavericks 29-32

There goes our winning streak as not only Chris Drexler (20 points, 7 rebounds) took us on but a surprising Bart Flanders who is starting at C and went 9/11 from the field for 20 points. Good for him, another one of my old players. Jack Dawkins was spectacular with 29 points and Joe Duggins had 18 points but when a team gets hot like the Nuggets did, we don’t stand a chance. We’re just not that talented to withstand hot shooting but that will come in the future.

Dallas Mavericks 29-33

Hey! We didn’t go on a losing streak as Jack Dawkins had a great all around game with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and only three turnovers as we beat the Riders 116-105. Just like last game Joe Duggins was our second best player with 14 points and 8 rebounds while Kemba Walker added nine assists. One of the reasons why San Diego lost the game was Stefan Nitschke who is nursing a sprained wrist and even though Dionsio Mason did a adequate job filling in (19 points) but the team isn’t as good without the German.

Dallas Mavericks 30-33

We are a great fourth quarter team as we ran off a 41-23 last term. That didn’t matter as the game was already over as the Knicks won the game 121-117 even with our flurry. New York had eight players in double figures which made it impossible to lock down the defence when everyone was scoring. Victor Jones was a man among boys with 27 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 15/16 from the line.

Dallas Mavericks 30-34

It wasn’t Jack Dawkins that led the scoring for our team, nor was it Victor Jones. It wasn’t Shawn Latimer nor Steve Anderson, so who was it? Changa Hendricks who scored 15 of his 23 points (including four three pointers) in the final term as we rattled off another massive last quarter (35-18) to beat the Kings 124-112. The starters combined for 98 points in a massive game. Another one of my old guys, Ryan Robinson, led the way for Sacramento with 26 points but we were the hot shooting side that the opposition couldn’t stay with.

Dallas Mavericks 31-34

Well, there goes our shot at a playoff berth. In an aggressive move to the basket Jack Dawkins tried dunking over Emmett Emerson, got blocked and landed uncomfortable and had to be taken off the court and didn’t come back. He had 22 points and 10 rebounds at that stage but doctors have confirmed that he has a broken wrist and will be out for probably the rest of the season. Damn, he was playing so well. We won the game after the Suns struck back in the fourth 33-20 without Jack but we got the win 109-102. Changa Hendricks lifted in the last quarter with 23 points and 10 assists as Victor Jones went 8/12 for 21 points and 7 rebounds. Reggie Dobbins attempted 18 three pointers on the game, hitting eight on his way to 30 points and 9 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 32-34

Shawn Latimer slides to SF with Joe Duggins moving into the PF position.

No Jack, no worries as we blast the Riders 117-87 as our point guards do all the damage. Victor Jones (10 points, 18 minutes) and Jimmy Forrest (12 points, 5/18 shooting) cancel each other out as Changa Hendricks had a blinder with 17 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds as Kemba Walker backed him up with 14 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in only 22 minutes. We held San Diego to only 34% shooting which is amazing for a team like this.

Dallas Mavericks 33-34

The Sonics got out to a 19 point lead halfway through the third term behind Carl Farmer’s 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks and it looked like our streak was going to be snapped. Hold on a minute! We are the fourth quarter specialists here, and Steve Anderson didn’t want any of your rubbish. We ran off a 33-16 last term to steal a 109-100 win over the more fancied Seattle side. Anderson had 23 points in the win while Kemba Walker continued his fine form with 12 points and 5 rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Andrew Owens loves to shoot but he usually shoots the wrong shots, going 7/20 from the field and a woeful 0/8 from the land of plenty.

Dallas Mavericks 34-34

Marcus Randle is having a hard time getting used to a new team, averaging only 15.4 points and 8.3 rebounds with the Grizzlies. Tonight he had another hard time with only 9 points on 4/13 shooting but his team made up for it, getting out to a 20 point lead at half time. We didn’t have a spectacular fourth quarter comeback, that was in the third where we rattled off a 30-17 term to take the win by the slightest of margins, 102-101. Shawn Latimer had his best game as a Maverick with 35 points and 9 rebounds to beat up on Joe Curry. Victor Jones and Joe Duggins combined for 28 points and 18 rebounds in the win. Ronnie Howard shot 6/20 from the field which is terrible for a centre for 19 points as their young general Cort Majishun had an average game with 8 points and 7 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 35-34

The Cavs are really good this season, nearly up to 50 wins already. So it wasn’t a surprise when they beat us but only by a little 108-103. We got out to a good start but they decided to play and eventually overwhelmed us. Brennan Weber was the best with 9/10 shooting for 26 points and 9 rebounds and even though Ron Winston had 25 points he went 6/26 from the field and 4/14 from three, still playing at PG for some reason. Steve Anderson was our best with 21 points but they were just better than us on the day.

Dallas Mavericks 35-35

In a very strange game where neither team scored over 90 points we took out the Bobcats 88-69. That’s right, they scored 69 points on 28% shooting. Shawn Latimer was the best on the court with 17 points and 10 rebounds as Victor Jones was close with 17 points and 7 rebounds. The Bobcats had four players in double figures but Craig Evans’ 12 points off the bench was the highest so not much. The five Charlotte starters combined to shoot 14/57 from the field.

Dallas Mavericks 36-35

So at one game above .500 we are still sitting at 10th spot in the West, but only two games away from the sixth seed which shows how close the race is. In fact, we are only five games out of fourth spot! Minnesota are leading the way at 47-23 with Nevada and Portland again behind them. It looks like Denver has wrapped up last place as they are seven games behind San Diego at 21-50.

The East already has two 50 win teams in New Orleans (52-19) and Toronto (50-24) with Cleveland not far behind at 48-28. Atlanta won a whopping four games that month and has the same amount of wins as Nevada’s 2019 campaign of 8-74.

Jack Dawkins – 4.4
Kemba Walker – 4.2

Dallas Top Rebounds
Joe Duggins – 7.2
Victor Jones – 6.1
Shawn Latimer – 5.9

It’s crazy to see how much Jack has improved in just one year. I think slipping to #13 in the draft made him open his eyes and put a chip on his shoulder to prove that he really is one of the best players in this draft.

Rebounds – Mark Lewis (UTA) – 10.3

Rebounds – Terry McKenzie (NYK) – 7.5
Blocks – Joe Moore (DET) – 1.0
Steals – Chris Jones (ATL) – 1.4
Efficiency – Mike Bickerstaf (OKC) – 16.7

Last Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. (1) C Schuyler Vanderwerken (Netherlands), 18 years old, 6’9”, 257lbs
2. (NR) PF Victor Brinker (Wofford), Junior, 6’9”, 225lbs
3. (4) SG Curtis Anderson (Colorado), Freshman, 6’5”, 198lbs
4. (2) SG Phillip Rude (Gardner-Webb), Freshman, 6’6”, 189lbs
5. (3) SG Kenny Pryor (USC), Freshman, 6’8”, 204lbs

Thoughts – It looks like “Shoo” will be going number one as his numbers have increased and his basketball understanding is coming in leaps and bounds. He could be the next dominant centre in the league. Brinker is looking great as well and will probably go number two.

Yep, really disappointing. He was just coming along nicely but at least I'm extremely excited about next season. At this rate he could sneak into the All Star game.

You guys are performing better than I thought you would aswell!

Thanks, I deliberately selected players that have good personalities and are above average defenders so they all get along and when the scoring dries up at least they will be able to slow down other teams. I'm absolutely shocked at how good Victor Jones has been this season, I guess all he needed was a chance in the league. He will definitely be back next season.

I'm think about doing a annual update on the six draftees (inspired by Skyline's thread) after this season just to show you guys how they are traveling.
