Game #18

Postby randy » Mon Jul 22, 2013 2:45 pm

1/18/97: #11 Sam Houston St (16-1, 4-0) @ Texas A&M Corpus Christi (10-7, 3-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast paced)
3. Key players: Jr SG Tony Driver (13.4 ppg, All Conf 2nd team last season)
4. Driver has a tendency to start out hot, so we have to keep a close eye on him

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

15:31, Up 10-6

11:10, Up 20-8
No indication that TAMCC is consistently making outside shots, so we'll stick with 2-3 zone. Burditt and Jackson both with 6 pts.

6:55, Up 31-19
All of a sudden, TAMCC connected on 3 straight treys, and trimmed down our lead to 20-17. We changed our defense to m2m, and went on an 11-2 run since

4:12, Up 33-33
TAMCC's turn to make a 13-2 run. I bring Burditt back. I called a timeout.

We'll start doubling on Driver, who has 10 pts

Halftime, Up 38-37
We were missing even the inside shots we normally make. Those ring cylinders seem to feel smaller when you're on the road. Our advantage on fast break pts (10-4) may have been the reason why we have the lead, but TAMCC seems to have the momentum

Linehan Johnson leads us with 12 pts, while TAMCC's Tony Driver has 10.

Start of 2nd Half

15:53, Up 50-48
Just when one team is poised to make a big run the other team quickly breaks it. Burditt has 8 of our 12 pts in the half

11:45, Up 63-52
We're shooting out of the roof in the 2nd half so far, and TAMCC wasn't able to keep pace during this current 13-4 run. Burditt with 13 pts in the 2nd half

7:37, Up 71-55
We have shut down Tony Driver, scoring only 2 pts in the 2nd half so far. Both teams are in the penalty

2:04, Up 85-68
It has become FT shooting fest the last few minutes. Closest TAMCC got was within 14 a while ago, but Burditt (26 pts) answered back with a 3

Final score: Sam Houston St - 91, Texas A&M CC - 72

Box Score
Burditt 28, 4, 1, 3 stls (*)

Post Game Notes
1. 3 players with 20+ pts! TAMCC was able to keep it close for the 1st 25 minutes, but our star players responded big time today. Johnson and Jackson were unopposed in the paint today, shooting a combined 16-24 FG.
2. TAMCC shot 5-23 3PT, and a lot of those misses were in the 2nd half. Tony Driver had 16 pts, but was not a factor in the 2nd half

Game #19

Postby randy » Tue Jul 23, 2013 2:25 am

1/21/97: Central Arkansas (8-10, 2-3) @ #11 Sam Houston St (17-1, 5-0)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast paced)
3. Key players: Sr SG Marty Lumpkin (16.8 ppg, 3rd best in conference)
4. They gave up 79 ppg in their road games

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

12:28, Up 25-20
Fans who came to see a shootout are in for a treat. UCA is 6-9 3PT (3 by Lumpkin), while we are 4-4 (all by Burditt). Burditt already has 19 pts, while UCA's Lumpkin has 11. We'll shift to m2m, and double on Lumpkin

7:19, Up 39-25
UCA's 2nd unit couldn't sustain the hot start by their starters. They put back Lumpkin now. I will try putting a big man (SF Angelo Wallace) to try to defend on Lumpkin

Halftime, Up 54-36
UCA shot a decent 46% FG, but we had an unbelievable 77% FG shooting clip. Burditt has 27 pts (10-11 FG, 5-5 3PT).

UCA's Marty Lumpkin has not scored since his initial barrage at the start of the game

Start of 2nd Half

15:50, Up 56-36
Talk about law of averages. Both teams started ice cold in this game. Burditt's scoring drive were the only pts scored in more than 4 mins of play

11:38, Up 69-38
Even though we continue to miss shots, our 18-3 advantage on off rebounds kept our scoring continuous. UCA's Lumpkin (4-19 FG) continues to struggle.

8:38, Up 79-43
I'm pulling Burditt out; no need to risk any injuries. Burditt finished with 39 pts. The rest of the starters will follow to the bench soon

Final score: Central Arkansas - 64, Sam Houston St - 91

Box Score
Burditt 39, 6, 3, 15-20 FG, 7-9 3PT (*)

Post Game Notes
1. Burditt seems to play inspired when being challenged into a scoring duel by an opposing player. Credit also to the team's relentless efforts of the boards, grabbing 21 off rebounds
2. UCA shot 12-28 3PT. SG Marty Lumpkin finished with 16 pts, 6-25 FG. Wallace did a good job containing him in the 2nd half

Game #20

Postby randy » Tue Jul 23, 2013 5:47 am

It is my first attempt at going to win #100 as head coach, and as luck would put it, we're facing what we consider the toughest game of our conference schedule

1/21/97: #10 Sam Houston St (18-1, 6-0) @ Texas - San Antonio (13-6, 5-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Jr SG Keith Anderson (18.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 45% 3PT)
4. They are the 2nd best offensive team in the conference, and their defense is not bad either. They lost a close match on the road against Texas St in their last game, after starting the regular season 5-0

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: M2M (double team on Anderson, and put an SF on him) / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

15:51, Down 7-12
UTSA playing with a lot of motivation. They are 4-4 FG, and UTSA's Anderson has not even attempted a shot

12:06, Up 18-14
Down 7-14 at one point, but Burditt and Jackson spearheading a 9-0 run.

8:41, Down 18-21
UTSA's bench brought them back with an 7-0 run

4:23, Down 26-29
Smith and Burditt not getting it done with their outside shots (3-14 FG combined). We'll go Favor Inside. UTSA has taken advantage of their FTs, shooting 12-14

Halftime, Down 37-45
UTA's Anderson caught fire in the end, hitting 3 3s to lead his team with 11 pts. Disparity in FT shooting really hurt us; UTA is 17-20 while we're only 5-11

We'll adjust to 1-2-2 zone in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

15:31, Down 48-51
We chopped the lead little by little until we tied the game at 48. UTSA just hit a 3 in their last play. Both my guards Thomas and Smith on the bench with 4 fouls. Playing at the 1 now is seldom-used Keith Jackson

9:58, Down 60-66
We cut the lead to 1 several times, but UTSA always had an answer. I will take a gamble and put back in Smith with 4 fouls

7:20, Down 66-70
Smith fouled out. In comes Thomas with 4 fouls. I'll give Burdit a (very) short breather. We cut the lead down to 2, but UTSA responded again

5:46, Down 66-75
UTSA capitalized on our 2 turn overs. I called a timeout, and bring back Burditt

The UTSA lead alternated between 8 to 10. We had mini run late in the game, trimming the lead to 4. But with only less than 30 secs left we had no choice but to give up fouls. UTSA brought their A-game today

Final score: Sam Houston St - 83, Texas San Antonio - 88

Box Score
Burditt 30, 7, 1
G Jackson 18, 3, 1
Johnson 11, 7, 1
Wallace 10, 4, 0, 2 stls
McCoy 6, 6, 0, 2 stls
Thomas 5, 2, 5, fouled out
Smith 3, 0, 5, fouled out
Thorton 0, 2, 0
Doss, 0, 1, 0
Jackson 0, 0, 6
Wilson 0, 0, 0
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 51-48%
REB: -3
TO: -1
Paint: +20
2nd Chance : Even
Fast Break: Even
Post Game Notes
1. Smith and Thomas just couldn't get into the flow of the game because they spent more time in the bench. The only positive I can take is the performance of SF Angelo Wallace, who had his best offensive performance of the season so far
2. UTSA ended up shooting 23-29 FTs, while we shot less than 50% with 8-17
3. UTSA's Keith Anderson was named best player, leading a balanced attack with 17 pts, 4 rebs, 3-4 3PT
Game #21 (Win #100)

Postby randy » Tue Jul 23, 2013 1:10 pm

1/28/97: #10 Sam Houston St (18-2, 6-1) @ Texas St (7-13, 2-5)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Inside
3. Key players: So C Jean Goodwin (12.2 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 58% FG, last year All-Conf 1st team and reigning Freshman of the Year)
4. We beat Texas St at home in the 1st round, 67-46. After a sub par offensive performance in the 1st half, we went to Favor Inside in the 2nd half to pull away. Texas St beat current conference leader Texas - San Antonio here at their home court, so they are not to be taken lightly

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 45%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

15:44, Up 5-3
Burditt scored all 5 pts, but he is only 1-4 FT. We committed 3 turn overs already

11:33, Up 14-5
Getting more balanced scoring now. TEXST is 2-12 FG.

7:01, Up 28-12

3:50, Up 33-14
TEXST continues to miss their outside shots. Plus they have way too many turnovers

Halftime, Up 41-17
Ray Smith has another good performance coming off the bench, leading us with 13 pts; Burditt has 9. No one from TEXST has scored more than 3 pts. TEXST had 14 turn overs, and shot 27% FG in the 1st half

Start of 2nd Half

15:49, Up 47-20
Even with a big lead, my players continued to exert great effort at both end of the floor. Good sign

10:57, Up 55-30
TEXST beginning to play a little better on their offense, but we have built an almost insurmountable lead by now. Will give more playing time to my bench

Final score: Sam Houston St - 79, Texas St - 52

Box Score
Smith 19, 5, 3 (*)
Burditt 15, 3, 2
McCoy 14, 5, 0
Johnson 14, 5, 0
G Jackson 4, 8, 1
Wallace 4, 4, 1
Doss 4, 0, 0
Thomas 3, 3, 7
Decker 2, 0, 0
FG: 50-37%
REB: +12

Paint: +38
Post Game Notes
1. No one really stood out, but we won big (lead was as high as 39 at one point). That means everyone contributed what they had to do, and I am happy with that.
2. None from TEXST scored in double figures. C Jean Goodwin had 6 pts, 7 rebs
3. I got my 100th win as head coach today. Not that it meant anything statistically significant (I became the 1114th mens basketball head coach to win 100 games in NCAA D1 history), but its always nice look back what you have done over the past 3+ seasons. And more importantly, it serves as a motivation to achieve more in the future

Game #22

Postby randy » Tue Jul 23, 2013 2:09 pm

1/28/97: Charles Burditt and Ray Smith were named as quarter finalist for the Norton award

2/1/97: Nicholls St (8-13, 3-5) @ #12 Sam Houston St (19-2, 7-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Inside
3. Key players: Sr C Jeremy Baker (7.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg)
4. We won in the 1st round, 78-60. It was close for most of the 1st half, until we took advantage on our transition game, and getting a lot of offensive rebounds (16) for 2nd chance pts

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 45%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

12:40, Up 21-17
Bot teams scoring at a high rate. We'll change to m2m defense

3:30, Up 36-33
NIC even took a 5 pt lead, 23-28, behind some torrid 3 pt shooting. We recovered and regained the lead, and it's been close since then

Halftime, Up 44-38
NIC was 7-12 3PT. I decided not to adjust yet my defense, but it could change if NIC continues to hit from outside

Burditt leads all scorers with 19 pts. NIC's Jeremy Baker has 8 pts, but 5 other NIC players connected on at least 1 3PT shot

The surprising stat though, is that we're 10-10 FT in the 1st half

Start of 2nd Half

15:28, Up 46-40
Both teams scoring only 2 pts in the 2nd half thus far.

10:29, Up 57-43
Joem Thomas scored 7 pts in a crucial 11-1 run, before NIC scored in their last possession

7:51, Up 61-45

3:35, Up 71-52
Can't remember the last time hit a FG. NIC's last 7 pts came from the line.

Final score: Nicholls St - 58, Sam Houston St - 80

Box Score
Burditt 32, 7, 1, 3 blks, 9-9 FT (*)
G Jackson 14, 8, 1

Post Game Notes
1. Defense was excellent in the 2nd half, limiting NIC to only 20 pts. Burditt was unstoppable on his drives to the hoop. Thomas was instrumental in a key run that broke the game away
2. After making 7 3s in the 1st half, NIC's 3 pt shooting went sour in the 2nd half, converting only 1-11. C Jeremy Baker had 10 pts and 8 rebs
3. Our best FT shooting performance in the season thus far, 14-14

2/4/97: Texas Arlington (9-13, 3-6) @ #12 Sam Houston St (20-2, 8-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: So C Ely Seabrooks (10.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg, All-Conf 2nd team last season)
4. We beat them on the road earlier, 82-65. TXAR is 1-4 on the road in the conference regular season

3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3

Tip off (1st Half)

15:33, Up 10-5
Burditt and Thomas scoring 5 pts each. TXAR already with 3 turn overs and 4 team fouls

10:44, Up 16-11
TXAR is 3-6 3PT; we'll shift to m2m defense. Joem Thomas continues to be aggressive on offense; he leads us with 9 pts. TXAR is in the penalty

7:52, Up 22-16
TXAR keeping it close with their outside shooting

3:41, Up 32-24

Halftime, Up 40-28
23 out of 28 pts of TXAR were from the outside, including 7 3s. Burdittt leads all scorers with 13 pts. TXAR's SF Tezale Maxson has 11, 3-5 3PT

We'll stick with m2m defense in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

18:04, Up 49-28
Burditt with a strong drive and a thunderous dunk. Burditt hits a 3. Burditt on a dribble penetration, and then dish to Jackson for assist. An inside basket by Johnson. All in less than 2 minutes. TXAR calls a timeout

Game #24

Postby randy » Wed Jul 24, 2013 2:06 am

2/8/97: #10 Sam Houston St (21-2, 9-1) @ Lamar (12-11, 3-7)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast paced)
3. Key players: Fr C Starzee Coffee (9.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg)
4. Leading scorer Donald Blossom is still injured, and starting PG Victor Wheat is not 100% (but he'll play). Lamar is just 1-6 on its last 7 games. Despite their clear disadvantage on paper, Lamar always play their A-game against us. We're 1-2 at their home court the past 3 years

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 45%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

15:05, Up 13-7
C Glendon Jackson already with 7 pts

11:59, Up 19-9
LAM with 4 turnovers

7:55, Up 27-16
Ray Smith seems to be injured (?) as his endurance dropped lower than usual. I'm not taking any chances, and pull him out

3:39, Up 35-21

Halftime, Up 39-27
Our big men doing most of the damage in the 1st half; Jackson and Johnson combining for 19 pts. We didn't shoot well from the outside, and committed some silly turn overs

LAM runs and presses almost every occasion. They substitute often; 10 of their players scored in the 1st half. I will play the bench more often in the 2nd half. Ray Smith is not 100%. This game is far from settled

Start of 2nd Half

14:22, Up 57-36
18 pts in just over 5 mins; everybody came out with their guns firing.

11:31, Up 67-38
The offensive onslaught continued. My bench players will get more time again today. I decided not to play Ray Smith in the 2nd half

Final score: Sam Houston St - 90, Lamar - 66
Those who are sitting on the bench late in the game cheered, when my seldom-used 7-1 C Mark Lampley scored his first career pts

Box Score

Game #25

Postby randy » Wed Jul 24, 2013 5:35 am

2/11/97: Texas A&M Corpus Christi (15-9, 8-3) @ #10 Sam Houston St (22-2, 10-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast paced)
3. Key players: Jr SG Tony Driver (14.8 ppg, All Conf 2nd team last season)
4. TAMCC on a 5 game winning streak, including a blowout win on the road against Texas - San Antonio. Tony Driver is 20 ppg in their current streak

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 45%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: M2M (double on Driver) / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

15:31, Up 13-12
TAMCC is scoring inside. We'll change to 2-3 zone

11:46, Up 19-12
2-3 zone seems to be working. Also, TAMCC is in the penalty early, so we'll focus on Favor Inside

6:36, Up 27-14
After a hot start, TAMCC limited to only 2 pts in the last 9 minutes. C Chris Doss making significant contributions off the bench, with 4 pts

3:30, Up 36-17
Aside from Doss, we also got "bonus" points from SF Angelo Wallace, with 5

Halftime, Up 46-20
Very good performance from just about everyone. Glendon Jackson is our leading scorer with 12 pts. PF Linehan Johnson got called early for 3 fouls, but it didn't matter as the likes of Doss and McCoy stepped up

Tony Driver was saddled with 3 fouls in the 1st half, and can only come up 2 pts.

Start of 2nd Half

11:42, Up 63-36
Early rest for our starters

3:13, Up 80-45
The home crowd was chanting for 7-1 Fr C Mark Lampley to play. I gave in, and he checks in for the 1st time in this game

Crowd egging Lampley to take a shot every time he touches the ball. However, he unselfishly passes the ball to an open, and even got credited for an assist

0:33, Up 86-51

TAMCC missed their shot. Wallace with the rebound. Sends an outlet pass to K Jackson. Pass to Wilson. Lampley makes a cut inside, and gets the pass from Wilson. Lampley found himself open. SLAM DUNK!!! The crowd went crazy, as if we just won a close game

Final score: Texas A&M CC - 51, Sam Houston St - 88

Box Score

McCoy 2, 7, 0
Johnson 2, 3, 0
Lampley 2, 0, 1
K Jackson 0, 3, 3
Post Game Notes
1. A close game at the start. An early defensive adjustment on our end. And that was it, we never looked back. I think we are peaking at just about the right time in the season.
2. No TAMCC player scored in double figures. Tony Driver had 5 pts, and only 5 FGAs

Game #26

Postby randy » Wed Jul 24, 2013 10:01 am

2/15/97: #9 Sam Houston St (23-2, 11-1) @ Central Arkansas (12-13, 6-6)
Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Sr SG Marty Lumpkin (17.2 ppg)
4. UCA is on a 5-game home winning streak; and they score a lot at home, averaging 83 ppg (23 ppg for Lumpkin) during the current streak

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 45%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: M2M (double on Lumpkin) / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)

15:47, Up 13-12
Burditt with 11 pts, UCA's Lumpkin with 9. Jackson just called for his 2nd foul

11:40, Up 23-19
Burditt continues his hot shooting, with 16 pts, 6-7 FG

5:59, Up 38-31
Burditt (19 pts) committed his 2nd foul at around the 10:00 mark, and I wad forced to sit him down. Ray Smith (9 pts) has taken over our offense. Both teams in the penalty

3:29, Up 42-34
Most likely, I will not bring Burditt and Jackson (both with 2 fouls) back for the duration of the 1st half. C Chris Doss with quality minutes, 6 pts 5 rebs.

Halftime, Up 49-42
Lots of FTs, good FG% for both teams (53-50%). Good performance on our part, considering the limited minutes of Burditt and Jackson. Burditt (19), Johnson (10), and Smith (10) lead our scoring. UCA's Marty Lumpkin had 12 pts, including tough outside shots against double teams

I'll switch to 2-3 zone at the beginning of the 2nd half, to protect ourselves from further foul trouble

Start of 2nd Half

14:36, Up 61-48
We get more inside pts. Despite UCA's Lumpkin scoring on 2 more jumpers, overall I feel our 2-3 zone is more effective in this game. We know UCA can score in bunches, so 13 is not a comfortable lead

12:16, Up 69-48
UCA went to a 4 guard lineup, with SG Lumpkin playing the 4. It backfired as we took advantage on pounding the offensive glass (11-0 advantage currently)

7:39, Up 82-57
UCA continues to use their 4 guard lineup, which means more pts in the paint for us. This should be over soon, and the bench will end the game

Final score: Sam Houston St - 100, Central Arkansas - 74
Wow, 100 pts!

Box Score
Burditt 34, 1, 1, 2 stls, 13-16 FG, 6-8 3PT (*)
Johnson 20, 13, 0

G Jackson 11, 6, 1
Wilson 7, 0, 0
Doss 6, 5, 0
Thomas 4, 4, 10
Wallace 4, 3, 3, 2 blks
McCoy 0, 5, 1
Thorton 0, 0, 0
K Jackson 0, 0, 3

REB: +24 (43-19)
TO: Even

Post Game Notes
1. We expected UCA to be offensive-minded in this game, but we can keep up if teams would employ that style against us. Despite the good offensive show by both teams, it is our rebounding that proves to be the big difference that UCA can't match
2. UCA's Marty Lumpkin finished with 16 pts, but only 4 in the 2nd half

Game #27 - Senior's Day

Postby randy » Wed Jul 24, 2013 11:07 am

2/18/97: Texas - San Antonio (17-9, 9-4) @ #9 Sam Houston St (24-2, 12-1)
Our lone conference loss was against UTSA (83-88). That game also broke what was then a 16-game winning streak for us. It "postponed" my 100-career win milestone. This is also the last home game for our seniors, including Charles Burditt. Can't think of a better ending to a regular season than this.

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Jr SG Keith Anderson (17.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 45% 3PT) is reportedly at "75%" with a sprained finger, and some reports mentioned he won't play although he is suited up. Nevertheless, UTSA has other scorers in their team which they have proven during our loss to them

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 45%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 3
Tip off (1st Half)
UTSA's Keith Anderson is not part of the starting lineup; most likely he won't play

15:58, Up 12-10
All of our 12 pts were scored by our seniors, Burditt (9) and Thomas (3). UTSA has ht 2 3s. We'll switch immediately to m2m defense

11:50, Up 22-14
UTSA tied the game at 14, but we go on a 8-0 blast, prompting UTSA to call a timeout. UTSA has 6 turn overs

8:06, Up 36-27
UTSA keeping themselves within striking distance. Burditt (11) and Smith (10) are both on double figures scoring now.

3:33, Up 43-30
Both teams in penalty; Jackson has 3 fouls and Johnson with 2.

Halftime, Up 57-44
Both teams were on fire towards the end of the half; I can't remember anyone missing a shot. I know it's a double digit lead, but somehow I feel is closer than the scores indicate. FG% is actually on UTSA's favor (56-61%), but their turnovers (11) allowed us to have more FGAs

We have 4 players in double figures - Burditt (19), Smith (12), Thomas (10), and Johnson (10). UTSA got a boost from their bench, scoring 34 of their 44 pts

I will switch back to 2-3 zone defense in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

14:57, Up 73-52
Burditt is driving to the hole almost at every opportunity, with much success. He has 29 pts. We were able to slow down UTSA's offense a little bit, with the 2-3 zone

9:11, Up 86-62
This is probably our most highly-anticipated home game, and our fans are getting their money's worth

Fans know this game is over. I substituted Sr PG Joem Thomas. The fans gave him a standing ovation ... but in the next few minutes, they are preparing a bigger cheer

5:30, Up 93-70
Sr SG Charles Burditt heads to the bench, and the fans cheered wildly. What a way to finish your last home game - 36 pts!

Final score: Texas San Antonio - 82, Sam Houston St - 102

Box Score
Burditt 36, 5, 2, 2 stls (*)
Johnson 20, 10, 2
Smith 18, 7, 4, 2 stls, 5 tos
Thomas 15, 4, 9
G Jackson 10, 7, 1
McCoy 2, 2, 1
Thorton 1, 1, 0
Wallace 0, 3, 1
Wilson 0, 2, 0
Doss, 0, 1, 1
Jackson 0, 0, 0
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 53-51%
REB: +19 (42-23)
TO: -6
Paint: +42 (62-20)
2nd Chance : +2
Fast Break: Even
Post Game Notes
1. Normally, 82 pts would be enough to win a lot of games in the NCAA. But Burditt and his team mates made sure there are no upsets ... not today. I know the team is fired up before the game, but the performance of the whole team is unbelievable. 62 pts in the paint - I've never seen quite like it
2. UTSA gave us a good performance, with 4 players (3 from the bench) scoring in double figures. SG Collier Duggins, who replaced the injured Anderson in teh starting lineup, led them with 16 pts
