Game #11

Postby randy » Mon Jul 29, 2013 1:55 am

12/10/97: #17 Sam Houston St (10-0) @ Baylor (5-4)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
3. Key players: Jr(R) SG Josh Webb (10.8 ppg, 47% 3PT)
4. Baylor is on the bottom 20 in rebounds per game. They don't score a lot either; seldom takes 3, but they get to the FT line at least 20 times per game

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

14:32, Up 13-12
BAY's C Wayland Burton had a good start, 8 pts, 3 rebs

10:46, Up 20-16

4:08, Up 36-28
Our 9 turnovers have given BAY to stay close

Halftime, Up 42-35
We're ahead, but we feel BAY is playing the style of game that we always do; they're pounding the off glass, and forcing us to commit turn overs

Keith Fields leads us with 14 pts, while BAY's C Wayland Burton has 12.

We'll increase def rebound intensity in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

15:54, Up 48-35
We're missing shots, but I am pleased with the improved effort on rebounding and defense

10:38, Up 53-45
We became undisciplined on offense, taking many outside shots. I called a time out

7:34, Up 61-49
We're in the penalty already.

4:16, Up 61-53
We suddenly can't make any shots. Even career 70% FG scorer Glendon Jackson, is shooting below par at 6-14 FG

2:00, Up 70-60
Not yet a won game, but we'll slow things down

Final score: Sam Houston St - 72, Houston - 60

Box Score
Field 22, 5, 2, 2 stls
Johnson 13, 8, 0
Jackson 13, 5, 1
McCoy 9, 5, 0
Newby 6, 7, 1
Smith 6, 5, 5
Wallace 3, 2, 1, 2 stls
Holmes 0, 2, 6, 4 tos
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 44-39%
REB: +5
TO: -2
Paint: +30
2nd Chance : +6
Fast Break: +13 (18-5)
Post Game Notes
1. After the 1st half, I felt BAY can come back and win, unless we improve on our rebounding and defense in the 2nd half - which we did. We continued to shoot poorly on our half court sets, but we got more fast break opportunities.
2. BAY's C Wayland Burton had 19 pts and 7 rebs; he played well against our 2-3 zone, often hitting mid range jumpers

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 2-3
2. Offense focus: Inside (slow)
3. Key players: Fr SF Ken Marshall (8.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg)
4. DePaul is averaging only 52.3 ppg (lowest in the nation) and 38% FG

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

12:49, Up 17-10
SG Keith Field with 10 pts

8:00, Up 29-14
Very good offensive execution of our plays; 62%FG, 0 turn overs

Halftime, Up 43-23
Still zero turn overs on our side!

Field leads all scorers with 12 pts, PG Ray Smith with 7 off the bench. PF Linehan Johnson seem to be injured, and I won't be playing him the in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

15:54, Up 55-23
This game is over. I'll start giving the bench more playing time

Final score: DePaul - 33, Sam Houston St - 87
The nation's worst scoring team, even scored 20 pts below their average!

Box Score
Field 16, 5, 3
Holmes 13, 3, 5

Newby 10, 5, 2
McCoy 6, 4, 1
Wallace 4, 1, 2
Patterson 3, 2, 0
Johnson 2, 2, 1, 2 stls

REB: +19
TO: -14 (2-16)
Paint: +38
2nd Chance : +14 (14-0)
Fast Break: +19 (19-0)
Post Game Notes
1. It is easy to spot that our offense was very efficient today (balanced scoring, only 2 turn overs). But not to be overshadowed is our defense, which not only forced DePaul to shoot poorly, but also did not allow a single 2nd chance nor fast break pt

Game #13

Postby randy » Tue Nov 05, 2013 4:32 am

12/21/97: #17 Sam Houston St (12-0) @ Iona (6-3)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Sr PG Alex Abrams (12.7 ppg)
4. Iona has not shot the ball well (40% FG, 25% 3PT), but they find a way to win by shutting down their opponents to also 40% FG.

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

15:52, Down 4-6
Sloppy start on our part, with 3 turn overs.

10:54, Down 11-16
We were up 11-6, but IONA on a 10-0 run, including hitting a couple of 3s. We continue to turn the ball over (7 tos). Increasing def rebounding to 8 (IONA with 4 off rebs already). We'll go with a more offense-oriented lineup

8:36, Up 20-16
SG Keith Field contributing 6 pts in our 9-0 run.

Halftime, Up 38-29
Our 10 turn overs, and 4-9 FT shooting, making this game closer

SG Keith Field leading all scorers with 12 pts; SF Jafar Newby and PF Rashif McCoy played well coming off the bench with 6 and 7 pts respectively. IONA's SG Rashard MacFadden with 10 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:41, Up 45-31
We clamped down on defense to put some separation in the scoreline.

11:45, Up 52-35
Field (17 pts) continues to connect from the perimeter.

7:08, Up 58-39
IONA shooting an ice-cold 31% FG. Starting to give the bench some playing time

Final score: Sam Houston St - 79, Iona- 51

Box Score

REB: +20 (12-6 off)
TO: +2 (17-15)
Paint: +28
2nd Chance : +12 (14-2)
Fast Break: +11
Post Game Notes
1. After making some adjustments middle of the 1st half, we dominated the defensive glass the rest of the game (total of 33 def rebs).
2. Another balanced scoring effort; I am particularly pleased that SF Jafar Newby is exclusively taking it strong to the basket. As a team, we only attempted 4 3PAs
3. IONA's McFadden went scoreless in the 2nd half, after scoring 10 in the 1st. PG Alex Abrams was a non factor with only 6 pts (2-15 FG, 0-7 3PT)

Game #14

Postby randy » Tue Nov 05, 2013 6:22 am

12/24/97: #17 Sam Houston St (13-0) @ Virginia Tech (5-3)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: So C Gregg Jacobs (10 ppg, 4 rpg)
4. VT has no dominant scorer, but as a team, they shoot a decent 47% FG. VT is 4-0 at home, limiting their opponents to just over 52 ppg

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

14:18, Tied at 8
We had some success in our post plays, but SG Keith Field starting cold from the outside (1-4 FG)

12:11, Up 12-11
Increasing press frequency to 7, hopefully to generate easy baskets

7:39, Up 18-16
This low scoring game is favoring VT's game plan

3:30, Tied at 24
We'll shift to M2M defense; VT has converted on 6-12 3PT.

Halftime, Up 28-27
Despite forcing VT to 14 turn overs, we are up only by 1 pt. Both teams shooting 40% FG

Our usually productive bench not contributing much; PG Ray Smith is scoreless

Start of 2nd Half

15:44, Down 34-35
We started off 0-4 FG, before we hit our last 2 shots. VT already in the penalty, so we are hoping to capitalize on the FT line to generate pts

11:33, Down 38-41
We still cant get any consistency on the offensive end. We'll try a tall line up, with SF Jafar Newby playing the 2.

7:52, Down 44-51
VT has not been called for a foul since they got into the penalty, so we haven't shot a FT since. Our m2m defense prevented VT from shooting from the outside, but they had success in penetrating the lane. We'll revert back to 2-3 zone

3:34, Down 46-58
We'll max out our off pace and press frequency

1:47, Down 52-58
Still not over

VT: We foul; we're in the penalty. VT to shoot 1-1. Hits both.

1:34, Down 52-60

SAM: Newby hits a jumper

1:23, Down 54-60

VT: We were called for a another foul. I complained to the ref. I was called for a T. They hit 1-2 tech FT, and converted on the 2 FTs (bec of the foul).

1:09, Down 54-63. We'll shoot 3s the rest of the way

Final score: Sam Houston St - 56, Virginia Tech - 63

Box Score
Jackson 16, 11, 1
Field 14, 2, 1, 2 stls, 5 tos
Newby 10, 3, 1, 2 stls
Holmes 6, 3, 5, 3 tos, fouled out
McCoy 4, 6, 0
Wallace 2, 2, 0
Johnson 2, 5, 1, 3 tos
Lampley 2, 0, 0
Smith 0, 1, 3, 4 tos
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 39-43%
REB: Even
TO: -3
Paint: +6
2nd Chance : +6
Fast Break: +8
Post Game Notes
1. Overall defensively, we played well. We even have better numbers in off rebs, pts in the paint, lesser turn overs, etc. Our shots just would not fall; credit also to WV's defense
2. PG Ray Smith had a horrible game today; aside from being scoreless and committing turn overs, he was in foul trouble for most of the game. Smith's role as our 6th man is vital if we want to have a successful season.
3. It was WV's bench who stepped up, led by reserve SF Brian Bellairs with 15 pts (3-6 3PT)

Game #15 - Start of conference play

Postby randy » Wed Nov 06, 2013 6:48 am

1/4/98: Nicholls St (6-7, 0-0) @ #19 Sam Houston St (13-1, 0-0)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Inside
3. Key players: So PF Marcus Taylor (7.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg)
4. Poor offensive team, with no player averaging in double figures. No significant outside threat either.

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

15:08, Up 6-5
Both teams are cold; all of our pts were generated from drives to the basket

11:45, 18-8
We continue to make a living on our penetrations. Our 3 key perimeter players (Holmes, Field, Newby) all with 2 fouls, so I'm stretching the bench a bit early

7:02, Up 28-16
PG Ray Smith and SF Angelo Wallace also had success slicing NIC's defense in the paint. NIC has hit 2 3s, but we'll continue with the 2-3 zone for now

2:29, Up 42-24
Our front court finally getting results on our post plays, giving us additional dimension on our offense

Halftime, Up 48-28
We have 34 pts in the paint, plus 10 FTMs resulting from fouls also inside the paint.

Ray Smith leads our balanced scoring with 10 pts off the bench. NIC's Marcus Taylor with 6 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:45, Up 62-33
The team came out of fire on offense to start the half, and blow this game. Early rest for the starters

11:16, Up 66-44
The team got a bit complacent the last 4 mins. Reminded the team to continue their focus on playing.

6:38, up 74-49
Much better effort this time, from the bench warmers. There was a sequence where we grabbed 4 consecutive offensive rebounds before making a field goal

Final score: Nicholls St - 57, Sam Houston St - 84

Box Score
Jackson 14, 6, 0
Smith 14, 4, 0 (*)
Johnson 13, 6, 1
Field 12, 2, 1, 4 tos
Holmes 7, 1, 6
Lampley 6, 7, 0
McCoy 6, 6, 1
Wallace 6, 3, 3
Newby 4, 6, 1
Wilson 2, 2, 0
Patterson 0, 2, 1
Willis 0, 1, 0
Team Stats Comparisons

REB: +22 (46-24)
TO: -2
Paint: +50 (62-12)
2nd Chance : +5
Fast Break: +5
Post Game Notes
1. A good "bounce back" game for Ray Smith, after his dismal performance in our last game (a loss against Virginia Tech).
2. Minutes almost evenly distributed across all players. No one played more than 24 mins
3. NIC's Marcus Taylor finished with 14 pts. NIC connected on 10 3s, which accounted for more than half of their offensive output

Game #16

Postby randy » Wed Nov 06, 2013 9:10 am

1/7/98: #19 Sam Houston St (14-1, 1-0) @ Central Arkansas (5-9, 0-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow-paced)
3. Key players: Sr PG Darius Walker (9.6 ppg, 3.2 apg, 49% 3PT)
4. Not your usual UCA team a couple of years back, who likes to run and score. Aside from Walker, no one else shoots more than 45%FG. Their second leading scorer even got suspended due to academics

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

13:28, Up 15-8
We're milking the post early, with PF Linehan Johnson and C Glendon Jackson combining for 11 pts.

7:02, Up 26-18
Ray Smith providing spark off the bench again with 6 pts. UCA's Darius Walker keeping them in the game with 2 3s. We'll shift to m2m defense

3:16, Up 30-25
Our offense went sour, even missing some inside shots

Halftime, Up 38-31
We need to be able to continue getting the ball down low, as our rotation of post players (Jackson/Johnson/McCoy) accounting for 24 of our 38 pts.

UCA's reserve SG Anthony Payne leads all scorers with 10 pts. PG Darius Walker with 6 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:33, Up 48-37
We went almost exclusively to C Glendon Jackson at the start of the half.

11:44, Up 55-43
The lead moved up to as high 16, but UCA still keeping this game far from over

8:47, Up 56-49
Too many fouls being called in the back court. Our guards in foul trouble, with PG Devor Holmes fouling out, and PG Ray Smith on the bench with 4. Seldom used SG Chris Patterson is now playing the point. We got ourselves a ball game here

4:17, Up 71-55
Our lead went down to 5, but we went on a 15-4 run with SF Jafar Newby (playing the 2 spot) scoring 9 pts. Newby was scoreless prior to that run

1:17, Up 75-59
UCA wasn't able to architect another comeback. Reserves will finish the game

Final score: Sam Houston St - 76, Central Arkansas - 59

Box Score
Jackson 19, 6, 1 (*)
Johnson 12, 2, 1
McCoy 11, 5, 0
Smith 11, 1, 3, 2 stls, fouled out
Newby 9, 4, 3, 2 blks
Field 6, 5, 3
Wallace 4, 5, 2
Holmes 3, 5, 2, 3 tos, fouled out
Wilson 1, 0, 0
Willis 0, 1, 0
Patterson 0, 0, 1
Lampley 0, 0, 0
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 46-36%
REB: +2
TO: -12 (9-21)
Paint: +32 (50-18)
2nd Chance : -6
Fast Break: +4
Post Game Notes
1. Game was much closer that the final score indicated. Just a timely run near the end of the game proved to be the decider.
2. SF Jafar Newby seems to be more comfortable playing the 2, as he creates mismatch problem against opposing SGs. We only have 3 reliable guards that I normally rotate on the 1 and 2 spots, so having Newby as an added option certainly helps
3. UCA's PG Darius Walker finished with 13 pts

Game #17

Postby randy » Wed Nov 06, 2013 11:10 am

1/11/98: Texas St (8-7, 1-1) @ #14 Sam Houston St (15-1, 2-0)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Inside
3. Key players: Jr C Jean Goodwin (16.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 52% FG), Jr C Kenyon Richardson (11.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg)
4. TEXST's only perimeter threat, SF Terrence Owens, is suspended. Expect TEXST to even rely more on their 2 big men inside the paint

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

15:43, Up 10-4
We're forcing TEXST's perimeter players to shoot from the outside, and they are not hitting them so far

11:12, Up 27-6
Our 2-3 zone clearly disorienting TEXST. Their big men can't get to any rhythm, plus we forced them to commit 9 turn overs already

7:16, Up 37-13

3:50, Up 43-18

Halftime, Up 52-26
We shot 62% FG in the 1st half, aided by 20 pts in transition. We clearly capitalized on TEXST's 12 turn overs.

SG Keith Field and PF Linehan Johnson already in double figure scoring, with 11 and 10 respectively.

TEXST's C Jean Goodwin with 9 pts, but got little help from his teammates

Start of 2nd Half

15:19, Up 58-35
Unless TEXST connects on a barrage of 3s, I don't see them coming back

11:48, Up 66-39
Started pulling off my key players. Bench warmers happy again. Slow down the pace

Final score: Texas St - 56, Sam Houston St - 78

Box Score
Jackson 19, 8, 0, 9-11 FG (*)
Field 15, 2, 1
Johnson 10, 3, 1
Newby 10, 2, 1
McCoy 6, 3, 3, 3 stls
Smith 6, 1, 6
Holmes 4, 5, 3
Wallace 2, 1, 2
Lampley 4, 3, 0
Wilson 2, 0, 0
Patterson 0, 0, 0
Willis 0, 2, 0
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 51-48%
REB: +5
TO: -15 (9-24)
Paint: +40 (62-22)
2nd Chance : +7
Fast Break: +14 (22-8)
Post Game Notes
1. The final team stats not really indicative of our offensive efficiency during the 1st 30 minutes of the game; the bench warmers played out the last 10 mins.
2. C Glendon Jackson has led our scoring during the 1st 3 conference games; he's averaging 17+ ppg
3. TEXST's C Jean Goodwin had a good game with 19 pts, 7 rebs, 3 blks. He and Glendon Jackson should be the early frontrunners for the Conference Player of the Year award
