On the eve of the Atlantic 10 Tournament I received a knock on my office door, entering the room was Leon Woolfolk who seemed a bit antsy.

LW: “Coach do you have a minute?”

DT: “Yeah Leon, what’s on your mind?”

LW: “I just wanted to let you know that I plan to forgo my remaining eligibility to enter the NBA Draft.”

I was taken aback by that, it took me a moment to regain my focus as no player has ever left my program early.

LW: “After talking it over with my family, I decided this would be my best course of action. We done our homework and the consensus is I would be a lock to be drafted in the first round. Coach I’ve enjoyed playing for you, enjoyed the school but this is something I have to do.”

DT: “I respect your decision, would have loved to have seen what you could of done next season but family comes first. I wish you the best, all I ask is when you get to the NBA don’t forget about us at La Salle.”

LW: “You got it coach.”

A handshake sealed the brief La Salle career of Leon Woolfolk.

(1) La Salle Explorers vs. (8) Temple Owls

Marco Williams started out on fire for us, hitting his first three shots and scoring seven points. Dave LaRue took control when Marco picked up his second foul and had to go to the bench for the rest of the half. knocking down one 3-pointer after another to send the us to a double-digit lead. When Dave blew by Reggie Alexander with a brilliant hesitation move, we led 33-21 and Temple was forced to call timeout. The senior was mobbed on the La Salle bench. Reggie Alexander matched Dave from the 3-point stripe. Then, trapping Ryan Jones and knocking the ball away, he set up a fast break that ended with Brandon Milford flipping up a lob that Derek Lewis slammed through for a dunk, capping a stunning 16-3 run in less than 4 minutes that gave the Owls their first lead of the night, 57-56. Calvin Capel made two free throws with two seconds left to give Michigan a 58-57 late in the game. Temple wouldn't go away, but Mike Williams wrapped it up by making two free throws with 29 seconds left.

La Salle Player of The Game: Marco Williams 16 points.

(1) La Salle Explorers vs. (4) Dayton Flyers

We love to run, push the tempo, shoot threes, and score a lot of points. With that said the reason we have been so successful is our defense. When we are on our game on defense we become a scary team to play against. We swarmed Dayton from the start, passing lanes didn’t exist for them. Every shot they took was contested, and we didn’t allow them to get into any offensive sets. Holding them to 21 points in the first half gave us a 16 point halftime lead. The second half was a repeat of the first half as we cruised to a 65-47 win. We held Dayton to 32.1% shooting from the field, 20% from the three point line, and forced them into 25 turnovers. Eddie Robinson and Peter Lutz led our offensive attack with 16 points apiece.

La Salle Player of The Game: Eddie Robinson 16 points 7 rebounds.

(1) La Salle Explorers vs. (11) Fordham Rams

The 11th seeded Rams defied all expectations to make it to the Atlantic 10 Tournament Finals. Them reaching this point has them confident they could shock the world, in essence they were playing with house money. Another reason Fordham would be confident is the fact they were one of two Atlantic 10 teams who beat us during the regular season. Despite all that going for them I knew they would have to play a damn near perfect game and we would have to be off. At halftime neither of those two things occurred, we were up 58-32 at half. It was the best half of basketball we have played this season. The game was never a contest as we romped to a 88-55 win. Dave LaRue scored 24 points off of the bench. Calvin Capel had 14 points, Eddie Robinson had12 and Marco Williams had 11 points.

La Salle Player of The Game: Dave LaRue 24 points.

(3) La Salle Explorers vs. (14) Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens

Trailing 39-34 at halftime Delaware was feeling good about themselves. They withstood a few of our runs, and had real belief starting the second half. Marco Williams was going through a tough shooting game so it was up for others to pick up the slack. Dave LaRue made two threes to start the half which seemed to open the floodgates. After a Delaware two cut the deficit to 45-38 Eddie Robinson sparked a 13-0 run scoring 7 points. Delaware got within 58-44, they would get no closer as we knocked them out with a 16-0 run to boost the lead to 74-44. In the end we would win 81-51.

(3) La Salle Explorers vs. (11) Marquette Golden Eagles

Despite winning 24 games and the Atlantic 10 Regular Season and Conference Title it has been a difficult season. From the start when we lost Derrick Morrison before the season, than starting 0-3. We navigated through that only to lose Leon Woolfook before Atlantic 10 play started. We overcome that only to lose Colin Walker to a horrific injury. Throughout the season we have overcome adversity time and time again. Trailing 38-24 late in the first time we were in another uphill battle. We closed the half out on a 9-0 run to trail 33-38 going into the half. In the second half we kept fighting, we got to within 2 points on numerous occasions but could not take the lead. Marquette built a 65-54 lead with a 1:30 left. Dave LaRue hit an off balance three to cut the lead to 57-65. After a stop on defense Mike Williams three made the score 60-65 with a minute left. Marquette split the one in one putting the lead up to six, Eddie Robinson layup made the score 62-66 with 48 seconds left. Marquette missed the front end of the one in one, Eddie’s jumper made the score 64-66 with 30 seconds left. Once again Marquette went 1 for 2 from the line, we rushed the ball up the court trying to tie the game. Dave LaRue missed a three, we got the rebound. Calvin Capel’s three point attempt missed as Marquette grabbed the rebound with 4 seconds left. One foul shot was all it took, our season was over with a 64-68 loss.

La Salle Player of The Game: Eddie Robinson 14 points 8 rebounds.

2020/2021 Non-Conference Review

After opening the season with a 80-67 win at Tennessee State we played in the Preseason NIT. Donnell Smith’s 16 points led us in a 71-57 opening round win against Delaware. South Florida was next, Eddie Robinson’s 15 points paced us as we knocked off the Bulls 85-69. At Madison Square Garden, we faced USC in the semifinals. We remembered what they did to us last season and weren’t about to have a repeat. After lighting us up for 49 last season, we kept USC Jelani Payne in check. He scored 23 but shot 7 for 19 to do so. With their top player in check Derek Morrison with 18 and Aaron Slider with 16 led us to the final with an 81-73 win. Wake Forest is the number 2 team in the country, for good reason at halftime they had us down 34-57. We outscored them in the second half but it was enough losing 73-90.

At Georgia USC 2.0 occurred, in a 84-98 loss Derrick Greene lit us up scoring 39 threes, nailing 10 threes in the process. In the loss Peter Lutz scored 22 off the bench while Donnell Smith chipped in 19 points. A 101-95 overtime win against Alabama was our most exciting game of the season. Eddie Robinson and Juan McCullum led the way with 18 points apiece. Derek Morrison had a double-double getting 16 points and 10 rebounds. We would split our last four non-conference games.

La Salle overall record 9-4.

2020/2021 Atlantic 10 Review

After a 67-78 loss to 25th ranked Duquesne we were 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play. That would be the last game we would lose in the regular season. We ran off 13 straight conference wins to finish 14-2 in the league. In an 82-69 win against Charlotte, Eddie Robinson scored a season high 25 points on 10 for 16 shooting. In an 81-47 win at St. Bonaventure Derek Morrison blocked 5 shots, in addition he grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 14 points. A 76-53 victory against St. Joe’s Peter Lutz came off the bench and narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds. At Temple we narrowly escaped with a 82-78 win, Dave Williams scored 8 of his team high 15 in the last two minutes of the game. Double-doubles from Juan McCullum and Derek Morrison helped us dominate St. Louis 83-53. In a 72-46 win at George Washington our defense gave up 11 points in the second half. Derek Morrison scored NBA level play in a 72-58 win against Rhode Island, 27 points and 13 rebounds in a dominate low post performance.

Despite a 63-55 win at Richmond the mood was very somber, once again we suffered a devastating injury. Late in the first half team captain and senior leader Eddie Robinson with a knee injury. A torn MCL was the diagnosis, at the moment the team decided to dedicate the reminder of the season to Eddie.

The first game after Eddie’s injury was a home game against UMass. Dave Williams starting for Eddie recorded his first double-double, 11 points and 10 assists in an 87-62 win. Ryan Jones 14 points led us to a 68-55 win at Dayton. Aaron Slider’s 19 points off the bench sparked us to a 79-65 win against Xavier. Our starting front line of Derek-Dave-Juan scored 50 points and grabbed 25 rebounds in a 80-74 win at Fordham. The regular season ended with a 90-61 on Senior Night, five players scored in double figures.

Overall we finished the regular season 23-6 overall and 14-2 in the Atlantic 10. Our national rank was 10.
