Game #27

Postby randy » Sat Nov 09, 2013 7:15 am

2/15/98: #12 Sam Houston St (24-2, 11-1) @ Texas-Arlington (11-14, 5-7)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Jr C Eli Seabrooks (9.1 ppg, 51% FG)
4. UTA likes to field in a tall lineup (2, sometimes 3 centers). They shoot at an above-average clip FG%, but one of worst teams in the nation in turning the ball over. UTA has won their last 3 home games

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5

(Last meeting) We won at home, 82-59
Tip off (1st Half)

15:57, Up 6-3
Our post players dominating inside early

11:55, Up 13-11
UTA connecting on 3 3s already. PG Ray Smith with 3 turn overs

7:37, 20-14
Both teams shooting below 40% FG. PF Linehan Johnson very active in the lane, 9 pts, 4 rebs

Halftime, Up 26-22
Both teams finding it difficult to score; UTA is 29% FG, while we're not much better at 31%. Our aggressiveness in attacking the rim, resulting in 8-9 FT makes the small difference in the 1st half

This could be a grind-it-out game i the 2nd half. INcreasing def rebounding to 9

Start of 2nd Half

15:07, Up 35-30
We're just dumping the ball to C Glendon Jackson (11 pts) and PF Linehan Johnson (13 pts) down low. Our perimeter players has not stepped up yet

11:33, Up 41-39
We've lapsed into committing turnovers. Both PGs Devor Holmes and Ray Smith with 4 fouls each

6:11, Up 53-48
C Glendon Jackson (19 pts) going to work, scoring 8 of our last 12 pts. But definitely the game is far from over.

2:32, Tied at 59
UTA just tied the game on a 3 pts shot. After our inbound pass, SF Jafar Newby called for traveling. I called a timeout

UTA: They miss. Ball knocked out of bounce. Our ball
SAM: They fouled PG Devor Holmes. UTA's 8th team foul. Holmes hits both

2:11, Up 61-59

UTA: C Eli Seabrooks looking to drive. Lane is congested. He was forced to take a difficult shot from 10 feet. Miss. PF Linehan Johnson grabs the defensive rebound.
SAM: We brought the ball in the front court. I called a timeout

1:38, Up 61-59

SAM: They foul Holmes again. Holmes with 2 clutch FTs again

1:33, Up 63-59

UTA: We got called for a foul. Refs are trigger happy on both ends. Our 10th team foul. UTA's SG Liam Neterville (15 pts) goes to the line; he's 3-4 FT today. Neterville also hits both

1:19, Up 63-61

SAM: Holmes pass to SG Keith Field. Field begins his dribble. He left his man. Drives to the hoop. Slam dunk!

1:06, Up 65-61

UTA: UTA's Netterville hits a 3! I called a timeout

0:48, Up 65-64

I instructed the team to press on our next defensive possession. We'll shift to m2m defense, doubling on Netterville. We'll go for a quick shot (2 for 1) Maxed out on rebounding

SAM: Holmes to Field. Field to SF Jafar Newby. Newby puts it on the floor. Drives to the lane. Foul called on UTA's Seabrooks. Newby is 1-2 FT so far. Hits the 1st. Missed the 2nd. UTA rebounds. They called a timeout

0:34, Up 66-64

We'll field in a tall lineup, to hound Netterville

UTA: They go to Seabrooks at the post. He makes the shot

0:20, Tied at 66

I won't call a timeout. I just shouted last shot

SAM: Newby gets the pass again. He shoots again, but this a jumper. Nothing but net! Up 2. More importantly, only a second left. UTA calls a timeout

UTA: They had to inbound in the backcourt. No time to put up a shot

Final score: Sam Houston St - 68, Texas-Arlington - 66

3. UTA did a good job limiting our transition game. They also shot 9-18 3PT. SG Liam Neterville led all scorers with 20 pts. C Ely Seabrooks 8 pts and 3 blks

Game #28 - Seniors Day

Postby randy » Sat Nov 09, 2013 5:22 pm

Today is the last home game for our 3 seniors:

1. C Glendon Jackson
2. PF Linehan Johnson
3. SG Ray Smith

2/18/98: Lamar (8-18, 4-9) @ #12 Sam Houston St (25-2, 12-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
3. Key players: Jr SG Eric Willias (14.5 ppg)
4. LAM averaging 20+ fast break pts the last 3 games.

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5

(Last meeting) We won on the road, 84-67. We got off to a good start, 31-13, and never looked back. We had a season-low 6 turnovers in that game
Tip off (1st Half)

14:56, Tied at 14
LAM connecting on 4-5 3PT. We'll switch to m2m defense

11:47, Up 22-14
We improved on our perimeter defense, going on an 8-0 run

7:53, Up 29-14
Current run continues, at 15-0.

3:05, Up 43-20
Run went as high as 21-0 until LAM finally scored. We're playing high-octane basketball, and our home crowd loves it

Halftime, Up 53-24
70% FG in the 1st half! The seniors have definitely come to play today, with the trio of Jackson / Johnson / Smith combining for 26 pts (outscoring the entire LAM team)

Start of 2nd Half

15:41, Up 57-30

11:44, 61-39
LAM's shooting improving, but we have established a big cushion already.

7:45, Up 65-45
Crowd getting ready to acknowledge and cheer for our seniors when they get substituted

7:01, Up 65-45
Sr PF Linehan Johnson heads to the bench. One-half of our 1-2 punch in the post. Because of our balance, the opposition often forgets about Johnson in their defensive game plan, which is not a good idea since he can score in bunches. Johnson is tireless rebounder as well.

5:31, Up 69-49
Sr PG Ray Smith head to the bench. Last year, I started the strategy of having a very good offensive player to come off the bench, and Smith is perfect for the role. Can play both guard positions, either facilitating the offense or as a go-to guy when playing SG. He is also one of our best perimeter defender.

3:51, Up 71-54
Sr C Glendon Jackson heads to the bench. Jackson's production does not vary much on every game; you know what you are getting out of him, which makes him one of the easiest players to coach. His efficiency on offense, shooting more than 65% FG, would definitely be missed next season.

Final score: Lamar - 59, Sam Houston St - 77

Box Score
Jackson 16, 5, 1, 2 blks, 7-8 FG

McCoy 10, 4, 0
Smith 8, 6, 5
Holmes 4, 2, 3
Wallace 4, 0, 3, 2 stls

REB: Even
Post Game Notes
1. Didn't matter that we couldn't sustain the electrifying start we had, on to the 2nd half. The home crowd was focused on giving a good send-off to the seniors. And perhaps, the players are already focusing on the upcoming tournament (conference and NCAA) games
2. LAM played a lot of 5-out formation today, which forced our big men to pop out to the perimeter on defense. Good job by our guards, Field and Smith, in grabbing those defensive rebounds
3. LAM converted 8 3s. SG Eric Villias finished with 12 pts (2-5 3PT)

3/3/98: (4) Texas St (16-12, 8-6) vs #10 (1) Sam Houston St (26-2, 13-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Inside
3. Key players: Jr C Jean Goodwin (15.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.3 bpg, 53% FG)
4. TEXST scores more than 25% of their pts from FTs

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5

(Previous meetings)
- Home: Won 78-56
- Road: Won 69-42
Tip off (1st Half)

15:22, Up 4-3
Pace is slow, which is to the advantage of TEXST; need spark from the bench. We're 1-4 FT. TEXST's C Jean Goodwin with 2 fouls

11:24, Up 15-6
Good start for SG Keith Field, 8 pts.

7:16, 25-8
TEXST lapsing into too many turn overs (10 already), and we got some easy transition baskets. We've also reestablished out post-up plays

2:16, Up 31-13

Halftime, Up 33-17
The 8 off rebounds compensated for our 39% FG shooting. On the other hand, TEXST on 29% FG

SG Keith Field leads all scorers with 10 pts. TEXST's C Jean Goodwin remain scoreless

Start of 2nd Half

14:14, Up 43-19
PF Linehan Johnson in double figures also, with 11 pts

11:17, Up 49-26
Both teams below 40% FG, but our +28 in FGA would be too hard for TEXST to overcome

7:00, Up 59-30
This is over. Rest the key players; more important games ahead

Post Game Notes
1. Just too many possessions given to us by TEXST, bec of off rebounds and turnovers. FGA comparison: SAM - 78, TEXST - 46
2. SG Keith Field was named POG, but PF Rashif McCoy derves recognition also as he played a very good game as well
3. TEXST's C Jean Goodwin finished with 5 pts, 2-10 FG, 11 rebs, 3 blks

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Outside (slow)
3. Key players: Sr SG Tony Driver (16.0 ppg, 41% 3PT)

Initial instructions

(Previous meetings)
- Road: Lost 75-83 (our FGA: 59; slow pace)

In summary, whoever controls the pace, will have a better chance of winning the game
Tip off (1st Half)

15:26, Tied at 8
TAMCC's SG Tony Driver (6 pts) already with 2 3s

11:30, Up 17-13
We're letting Driver (11 pts) take a lot of their shots, as long as his team mates won't be a factor on offense. No adjustments on defense yet

6:12, Up 31-23
Contrasting styles of play; TAMCC continues to shoot from the outside, while we go to the inside. C Glendon Jackson with 13 pts.

3:52, Up 33-25

Halftime, Up 43-27
Nice 10-2 run to end the half. C Glendon Jackson (15 pts) and PF Linehan Johnson (12 pts) simply dominant inside.

TAMCC's TOny Driver (16 pts) cooled down a bit in the latter part of the half

Start of 2nd Half

15:41, Up 52-37

12:20, Up 62-44
Perhaps SG Keith Field got challenged with his match up with Driver; Field (21 pts) having a great 2nd half

8:56, Up 71-49
Field continues to wax hot, with 26 pts

3:38, Up 77-61
Safe lead at this point

TO: Even (10 each)
Paint: +52 (66-14)

Post Game Notes
1. Will Field be this aggressive on offense during the NCAA tournament? I sure hope so, if we want to make a deep run
2. TAMCC settled for too many low-percentage shots. They took 38 3PAs (making 13), out of their total 63 FGAs. SG Tony Driver finished with 22 pts, 6-17 3 PT

Injury news

C Glendon Jackson with a strained hamstring. Initial prognosis indicates 14 days before he can fully recover.

Today is March 5, so Jackson will definitely not be 100% during the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. This is a big blow

Selection Show

Postby randy » Sat Nov 09, 2013 8:03 pm

Our RPI is 10, and ranked #9.

And all we got was a 5th seed

We're in the East Regionals (Washington DC)

1st round matchup:
- (5) #9 Sam Houston St vs (12) Fairfield

Other notable teams in the East Regionals
- (1) #4 North Carolina St
- (2) #7 Indiana
- (3) #3 Houston
- (4) #2 UNLV
- (6) #21 Memphis
- (7) Pittsburgh
- (8) Tennessee
- (11) Florida St.

Is this the group of death? We could potentially face the #2 team in the country during the round of 32 (sigh!)
