2/13/99: #5 Sam Houston St (24-3, 12-0) @ Texas San Antonio (18-7, 10-2)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Fr C Cory Taylor (12.8, 6.2 rpg, 58% FG)
4. Since the time we defeated tehm at home, UTSA is on 5-game winning streak. They 6-0 at home this season during the conference regular season

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 7

We have to keep them off the offensive glass; they grabbed 14 off rebounds during our last meeting

Last Meeting
- 1/19/99 (Home): Won 81-61 (Newby - 17 pts, 3 stls)
Tip off (1st Half)

15:35, Down 9-10
UTSA 2-4 3PT

11:19, Down 15-16

7:59, Down 21-23
Our 7-7 FT has (barely) kept us in this game. UTSA playing inspired basketball, 50% FG and they have only 1 turn over

3:54, Down 27-28

Halftime, Down 37-38
Has been very close the entire 1st half; no team has lead by more than 3 pts.

We're shooting 38% FG; only our 11-14 FT saved us.

We'll shift to m2m defense in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

15:33, Down 47-48
UTSA began to hit again from the perimeter, 7-15 3PT. Do we go 1-2-2? We'll stay with m2m

11:53, Down 49-53
UTSA committing turnovers, but we're not taking advantage

5:50, Down 67-69
Tied it twice at 53, and then at 55. But UTSA had an answer every time.

UTSA: SF Jafar Newby steals the ball
SAM: SG Keith Field gets the pass. He shoots. Miss. Ball knocked out of bounce. UTSA ball
UTSA: PG Rob Bestor has hit a dagger 3. That's Bestor's 5th 3

2:40, Down 67-76

SAM: C Josh Fredrick got fouled. 2 FTs. Missed both. Not our night.
UTSA: They score. Down 11. I called a timeout

We'll go for 3s. Heavy outside. Small lineup.

But just when everyone thought the game is over.

PG Davor Holmes hits a jumper. UTSA miss. SF Jafar Newby with a basket. UTSA turns the ball over. We run and get a fast break. UTSA turns teh ball again. Fast break opportunity for us. UTSA fouls.

0:37, Down 73-78

SAM: 2 FTs for PF Tyrone Walls. Hits the 1st. Hits the 2nd. Just a 1 possession game! Timeout UTSA

0:37, Down 75-78

UTSA: They miss. We got the defensive board. Dribbled to the front court. Timeout

0:16, Down 75-78

A 3 is the 1st option. But a quick 2, and then foul, is not a bad alternative

SAM: PG Billy Johnson has the ball. Pass to SG Keith Field on the right corner. Field attempts to pass. Intercepted. We foul
UTSA: 1-and-1. 0:11. They hit the 1st. 2 possession game. Winning streak is over. Good effort in trying to rally

C Josh Fredrick leads all scorers with 11 pts. SG Keith Field and SF Jafar Newby contributing 10 each.

Start of 2nd Half

15:34, Up 54-24

10:27, Up 66-32

9:14, Up 68-34
The crowd cheered in anticipation when 5 players on the bench went to scorer's table. On the next dead ball situation, I replaced all seniors on the floor, all played a big role in last year's NCAA championship team:

SF Angelo Wallace. A 3 year-starter. Our "glue-guy" who does a little of every thing on the floor

PG Davor Holmes. Started last year, and a key member of the bench this year. A steady play maker. He has improved his outside shooting this season

PF Rashif McCoy. An important member of our front line rotation the past 2 seasons. He provides energy coming off the bench, whether scoring or rebounding

SF Jafar Newby. Comes off the bench, but plays starter minutes. He has provided numerous big plays for us in crucial situations, both on offense and defense. His drives to basket have created mismatches always make the highlight reel.

SG Keith Field. And of course, who can forget the way Field carried the team during last season's NCAA tournament championship run, including victories over 4 top-10 teams. He was a virtual unknown before the tournament last season. Now, he is the defending NCAA Most Outstanding Player. What will he do for an encore in this year's tournament?

Now back to the game ...

2:23, Up 76-43
Walk ons to see some action today

Tip off (1st Half)

13:08, Up 10-9
A very shaky start for us. 36% FG, 4 turn overs, and 2 quick fouls for PF Tyrone Walls. Our 5 off rebs kept us in the game. TAMCC going to their post plays early. We'll shift to 2-3 zone, and challenge their shooters

11:27, 16-9
PF Rashif McCoy steady presence on the floor, 6 pts, 2 rebs

5:28, Up 32-24
Good offense by both teams. PF Rashif McCoy has been sensational today, 15 pts, 5 rebs, 7-7 FG

Halftime, Up 42-32
Story of the half is PF Rashif McCoy, 16 pts, 5 rebs, 7-7 FG.

TAMCC has not taken too many 3 pt shots (1-5 3PT) so we'll stay with the 2-3 zone

14:36, Up 53-38
PF Tyrone Walls, who didn't played much in the 1st half, scored 7 of our 11 pts in the 2nd half

11:18, Up 57-43

7:40, Up 64-48
TAMCC was threatening earlier with 2 3s by PG Joe Harris, but PF Rashif McCoy came to the rescue again, adding 2 more baskets
