Tip off (1st Half)

15:39, Down 7-10
They do indeed play fast; and likes to shoot quickly from the outside

11:35, Up 16-12
I put in SF Anthony Bryant on the floor, and he immediately scored on 2 dunks, to energize our offense

7:58, Up 24-21

1:47, Down 36-39
It seems we're the one who can't keep up with this fast pace game

Halftime, Up 38-41
WASH shot 53% FG i the 1st half. We'll try to alter their offensive flow, by going to a 1-2-2 zone in the 2nd half

Top players
- USC: C Antonio Forney, 9 pts, 4 rebs
- AZST: reserve SF Matt Wynn, 9 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:35, Down 49-54
WASH continues their hot shooting, going 6-8 in the 2nd half

11:56, Down 49-58
Two costly turn overs that WASH turned into easy fast break pts. We'll adjust to balanced offense, as WASH starts using 2-3 zone more

7:05, Down 54-67
WASH continues to shoot well, while our offense went to a halt the last 5 possessions. We go back to m2m defense

Teams traded baskets, alternating WASH's lead between 11 and 13.

We cut it down to 11 at the 5:37 mark, when WASH's SG Mike Reyes hits a dagger 3. We're staring down at a 14-pt deficit with just over 5 mins remaining

SG Mark Austin responds back with a 3. We get a steal, ran the fast break, and scores on a dunk. Still down 9, 4:34 left

WASH hits on a jumper, and brought back their lead to 11

SG Mark Austin hits another 3. Down 8. We steal the ball. We're on the break. PG Marquel Jamison passed the ball to the streaking PF Brian Salvi for a dunk plus a foul. Media timeout

3:40, Down 70-76

USC: Salvi to shoot a bonus FT. Miss
WASH: They shoot a 3. Miss.
USC: SF Sam Millar tries his luck from 3. No good
WASH: Foul. Only our 5th team. Foul again. I was complaining to the refs. I replaced SF Sam Millar with SF Anthony Bryant

WASH: They go the post. Shoots. Miss. We rebound
USC: WASH go a 2-3 zone. SF Anthony Bryant shoots a 3. It's good!

2:28, Down 73-76

WASH: PF Landon Layne shoots from the high post. Layne scores!

2:12, Down 73-78

USC: SG Mark Austin fakes a 3. He gets closer. Pulls up a jumper. Miss
WASH: Foul called again. 1-and-1. Split

1:43, Down 73-79

USC: SG Mark Austin missed again. Tired legs
WASH: Turn over. I called a time out

1:10, Down 73-79

We'll quickly go for 3s. I put in a small lineup

USC: Seldom-used SG Kaniel Coley shoots a 3. It's good. Not yet over

0:55, Down 76-79

I shouted that we'll go 2-3 zone

WASH: They miss. We rebound. Dribbled to the front court. Timeout

0:36, Down 76-79

Last shot time. What the heck. We'll design for another 3-pt shot for SG Kaniel Coley.

USC: Coley receives the ball. Without hesitation, he took a quick shot. It's good again! Where did this guy came from

0:32, Tied at 79

WASH: They did not call a time out. They obviously are looking for the last shot. PG Matt Darting has the ball. 0:03 left. He goes for a 3 at the top of the key. It's good. Game over. What a match!

Post Game Notes
1. We're not too bad offensively in this game, but WASH shot better and were active on the boards. Despite WASH's inspired game, I commended my team for not giving up and erased a 14-pt deficit with only 5 mins remaining
2. This is just SG Keith Coley's 6th game of the season, and is averaging only 6 mpg. Those were 2 big-time 3s that he hit. Coley is a So transfer from Duke, and this is his 1st playing year here at USC

Team Metrics, Stats, Analysis, and Adjustments

Postby randy » Tue Nov 19, 2013 4:43 pm

[DTO]
- 23.2% (#1 Pac 12, #8 Nat'l)
- Translates to 18.3 opp turn over per game, 5th best in the country.
- Constant pressure defense contributes to generating turn overs.

OeFG
- 46.7% (#2 Pac 12)
- We shoot 33.4% in 3PT, which translates to about 50% eFG. Thus, if we shoot more 3s, we can increase our OeFG%

OR
- 36.6% (#1 National)
- Only around 8% of our total off rebounds were grabbed by the guards. Thus, we can sag off a bit to defend against fast breaks by the opposition

OFTRate
- 27.7% (bottom half National)
- We don't get to the FT line a lot. One possible explanation is that our big guards and small forwards don't drive a lot, and settle for outside shots. Not enough time to address it this season, but something to be considered next season.

DeFG
- 38.0% (#1 National)
- Translates to 37.5% opp FG, 2nd best in the country
- Our m2m defense, together with a "9" in defensive intensity, contributes to why we scored well on this metric. However, these factors may have been the same reasons for our poor performance in the next metric

DFTRate
- 40.9% (Last Pac 12, 11th worst National)
- We give up a lot of FTs to the opposition. In a low scoring tight game, FTs can spell the difference between victory and defeat
- In general, m2m defense results in more fouls. Also, a high defensive intensity increases the likelihood of fouls being called.
- Mixing in some zone and/or decreasing defensive intensity would be a solution to decrease the DFTRate metric. But by doing so, it would sacrifice a bit on DeFG%.

Final Analysis
1. We'll continue to max out (10) on pressure defense. This is possible because we have a deep bench on all positions, so fatigue is not a factor.

2. By default, use a more Balanced offensive focus against teams employing m2m defense. Adjust depending on opposition's defensive formation and/or late game situation:
2-3 or 3-2 zone: Favor Outside focus
1-2-2 or 1-3-1 zone: Favor Inside focus
Need a 3pt shot: Heavy Outside focus

3. Lower offensive rebounding intensity to 8. May need to adjust in late game situations, e.g. increase if we need to score, decrease further if we are protecting a small lead

4. Use a mix of m2m and zone defense during the 1st half, with the objective of reducing fouls and therefore, FTs given up. By default, we'll use 60% m2m, 20% 2-3 zone, and 20% 1-2-2 zone, during the 1st half. Adjustments during the 2nd half depends on opponent's offensive focus:

    Balanced: No adjustments needed
    Outside: Use 1-2-2 zone
    Inside: Use 2-3 zone
Late game situations will be handled on a case to case basis

5. Lower defensive intensity to 7 during the 1st half. Increase to 8 during the 2nd half
