Game #32 - NCAA Tournament Round of 32

Postby randy » Sun Nov 24, 2013 1:45 am

3/18/02: (6) #20 Xavier (24-9, 12-4) vs (3) #14 USC (26-5, 14-4)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key players:
    • Sr PF Clifford Freeman (10.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 51% FG, 3-time All Conf)
    • Fr SG Keith Lackey (10.7 ppg)
    • Jr PG Brandon Burrough (9.0 ppg)
  4. Strengths:
    • Defense - 16.6 opp topg (#2 A10, Top 25 Nat'l), 42.8% opp FG (#3 A10)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Rebounding - 24.7% OR (worst A10), 69.3% DR (2nd worst A10)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 2nd Atlantic 10; Lost Conference Tournament Final
    • Round 1: Def Florida, 55-45
  7. Notes:
    • They shoot almost 20 3PAs per game
    • In their 1st round game, they allowed Florida to shoot only 28% FG and forced 18 turn overs, enough to offset Florida's the 18 off rebs.
Strategies
  1. Defense: (1st half) 50:10:40 ratio; (2nd half) adjust
  2. Lower def rebounding intensity, to get more transition pts. We know it's going to be difficult to shoot a high percentage on our half-court offense

Tip off (1st Half)

15:57, Up 8-6
Both are FGs result from off rebs

11:49, Up 21-10
After XAV tied the game at 8, SG Kaniel Coley scored 11 straight pts (3-3 3PT)

7:49, Up 29-15
We began driving more, and getting fouled in the process; 8-9 FT

3:40, Up 35-17

Halftime, Up 39-20

Highlights
  • I am pleased that our game plan is working out, but no reasons to celebrate yet. We dominated the rebounding battle, as we are aware that is XAV's weakness. Our 8 off rebounds were responsible for generating 11 2nd chance pts (+4 differential)
  • We also expected it would be tough to score in the half court against XAV's defense, so we run more than usual (by sagging a bit on def rebounding). That resulted in 12 fast break pts (+8). A bonus is we committed only 3 turn overs
  • And of course, SG Kaniel Coley providing one of his trademark shooting streak that swings momentum to our side very quickly
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Same, unless we get into foul trouble

Start of 2nd Half

15:56, Up 45-23

11:53, Up 48-28
We may not have scored that much so far in the 2nd half, but we also ramped up our defense even more, allowing only 2 FGMs for XAV

8:17, Up 50-38
A 10-2 run by XAV. Our shooting has dipped to 34% FG. I called timeout

3:05, Up 57-46
SG Kaniel Coley fouled out. XAV reduced our lead further, down to 8. C Antonio Forney scored on the low post, and then again in the low post but got fouled (he split his FTs), restoring our double-digit lead

XAV can only come up with 2 FTs. I called another timeout

0:57, Up 59-48

Instructed the team to waste some clock. We should be ok, and book ourselves to another trip to the Sweet 16!!!

Final score: Xavier - 48, USC - 61

Box Score
Forney 13, 8, 1, 3 stls (*)
Bryant 12, 8, 0
Coley 11, 1, 1, 3-7 3PT, fouled out

Millar 9, 6, 2
Bailey 4, 3, 0
Owes 2, 3, 0
Wheat 0, 2, 0
Parker 0, 1, 3, 2 stls

Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 34-30%
REB: +8
AST: Even
TO: -4

2nd Chance: Even
Fast Break: +6
Notes
  1. XAV got back in the 2nd half when they started to get 2nd chance opportunities, similar to what we did back in the 1st half. They also got the FT line more. They just didn't shoot well needed to climb the big lead we established earlier
  2. For the game, we got 13 2nd chance pts, 16 fast break pts, and converted 14-20 FT. These "scrappy" pts represent majority of our total, and we need to continue getting these type pts esp when defenses get tougher in the later rounds
  3. A big injury blow as SF Anthony Bryant is suffering back spasms and will be out for 12 days.

Game #33 - NCAA Tournament Regionals Semi-Final (Sweet 16)

Postby randy » Sun Nov 24, 2013 5:43 am

Earlier in the season, we faced (then #21) Syracuse, at the height of "Coley-mania". In 3 games prior to the Syracuse match, SG Kaniel Coley has converted on 24 3pt shots, and people began noticing his shooting abilities. In the game against Syracuse, Coley erupted for 15 triples (on 29 attempts), and scored 47 pts en route to a 92-59 victory. The game catapulted him into a media-circus.

http://www.wolverinestudios.com/forum/showpost.php?p=153890&postcount=507

We meet Syracuse again, but to think we'll we crush them again would be foolish for a number of reasons:
  1. Don't expect Coley to take 29 shots again
  2. This is the NCAA Sweet 16, and we won't score 90+ pts against Syracuse at this stage of the competition
  3. The injury to SF Anthony Bryant is more significant than most people think

3/23/02: (3) #14 USC (27-5, 14-4) vs (7) Syracuse (21-11, 10-6)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key players:
    • Fr SG Marcus McAfee (17.1 ppg)
    • Sr C Alex Chambers (8.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1-time All Conf)
    • Sr SG Dean Hawkins (7.2 ppg, 4.4 apg, #50 class rank)
  4. Strengths:
    • Seldom turn the ball - 11.5 topg (#1 Big East, #4 Nat'l)
    • Rebounding - 33.6 rpg (#1 Big East)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • FG shooting - 41.7% FG (3rd worst Big East)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 3rd Big East; Lost Conference Tournament Quarter-Final
    • Round 1: Def Colorado, 84-69
    • Round 2: Def Arkansas, 65-56
  7. Notes:
    • They shoot 26 3PAs per game (#5th National), at 34% 3PT. This is the reason why they don't shoot at a high overall FG%
Strategies
  1. Defense: (1st half) 40:10:50 ratio; (2nd half) adjust
Injuries
  1. SF Anthony Bryant (back spasms, 75%, 8 days); SG Kaniel Coley to start at 2, SF Sam Millar to slide at 3

Tip off (1st Half)

12:42, Tied at 10
SYR's leading scorer, SG Marcus McAfee picked up 2 quick fouls. SYR's defense has already produced 2 blocks and forced us to commit 3 turn overs. SG Kaniel Coley connected on his 1st 3pt attempt

We fell behind, 16-17 after SYR broke our press, and scored on an easy dunk

C Hasheem Bailey scored 2 pts on the low post, to get ourselves ahead once again, 18-17

After a SYR miss, we go SG Kaniel Coley. Coley puts up a shot. Coley fills it up from long range, for 3! It is Coley's 2nd 3 of the game. Up 4.

Another SYR miss. Crowd sensing who will get the pass on our next play. SG Kaniel Coley gets the pass. Coley lets one go. Coley sticks it from deep for his 3rd 3 of the game! Up 7

We get a steal. We push it up to C Antonio Forney on the break who throws down a jam! Up 9

SG Kaniel Coley gets s steal. Coley is pushing the ball. Coley to go all the way. Coley lays one in on the break! Up 11. Timeout SYR. An 11-0 run in less than 2 minutes

7:22, Up 28-17

3:38, Up 35-23
Teams traded baskets and FTs. Both teams in penalty

We we're leading by 14, and SYR hits a big 3 just before the halftime buzzer sounded

Halftime, Up 39-28

Highlights
  • Almost the same number of turn overs (7-6), but we have produced more fast break pts than SYR, 13-4. We also dominated glass, 22-9.
  • Our defense has limited SYR to only 39% FG. Part of that is leading scored SG Marcus McAfee only played 4 scoreless mins due to fouls
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Same; may go more on m2m if McAfee starts scoring

Start of 2nd Half

14:24, Up 48-32
We started the half on a 7-0 run, 2 inside baskets by C Antonio Forney and the 4th triple of SG Kaniel Coley. Teams traded basket since

11:52, Up 50-37
SYR looking to start something with a 5-0 run

After the media timeout, we go back to SG Kaniel Coley. Coley puts up a shot. Coley sticks it from deep for another three! His 5th of game. Lead back to 16.

After a SYR miss, we went to Coley again. Coley catches the pass
Coley shoots. Coley scores from deep again. 6 3pt shots by Coley, 22 pts. Lead ballooned to 19

11:00 Up 56-37

7:44, Up 60-42
We'll go 1-2-2 zone exclusively

3:25, Up 72-52
We'll slow down the game

Elite 8!!!

REB: +18
AST: -3

2nd Chance: +15
Fast Break: +12
Notes
  1. We took away one of SYR's strength, which is rebounding, and that was enough to hold off any rally they have in mind in the 2nd half. Our 12 off rebs resulted in 17 2nd chance pts. Add the 23 fast break pts, and that's more than half of our production.
  2. Another good game for SG Kaniel Coley, on his first start of the season. The timing of his shots were perfect, when the game was tight back in the 1st half; and when SYR was having a little momentum in the 2nd half
  3. C Hasheem bailey had a good game off the bench, 10 pts, 5-6 FG.
  4. Also, starting PG Antonio Parker had zero turn overs. The freshman guard is coming along just fine, on his 1st NCAA tournament.

Game #34 - NCAA Tournament Regionals Final (Elite 8)

Postby randy » Sun Nov 24, 2013 9:58 am

A couple of story lines on our upcoming match with Minnesota
  1. This is the 3rd straight year we'll facing the Gophers in the NCAA tournament. Back in 2000, we were beaten in the Sweet 16. Last year, we returned back the favor and beat them during the Round of 32. This year, both teams will try to settle the score, and the stakes are much higher - a ticket to the Final 4
  2. Earlier this season, one of Minnesota's main players, Jr PF Valery Stuart, decided to transfer and we were able to pick him up. Although he is ineligible to suit up this season, it would be interesting to see if Minnesota will thrive without him, or does Stuart have the last laugh

3/25/02: (3) #14 USC (28-5, 14-4) vs (9) Minnesota (19-12, 10-8)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Key players:
    • So SG Jason Walton (18.5 ppg, #27 class rank)
    • Fr SF Alex Fields (14.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg, #11 class rank)
    • So C Bryan Jones (7.4 ppg, 7.5 rpg)
  4. Strengths:
    • Offensive efficiency - 72.2 ppg (#2 Big 10), 45.5% FG (#2 Big 10), 16.4 apg (#2 Big 10, #11 Nat'l)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Almost none. Possibly defensive rebounding, but they haven't shown that "weakness" during the 3 tournament games so far
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 4th Big 10; Lost Conference Tournament Quarter-Final
    • Round 1: Def (8) Purdue, 91-71
    • Round 2: Def (1) #3 St John's, 66-58
    • Sweet 16: (4) #15 Def Kansas St, 75-64
  7. Notes:
    • They shoot almost 20 3PAs per game, and 60% of those are taken by SG Jason Walton. But stopping Walton does not guarantee victory against Minnesota. In their Round of 32 match against (1) St John's, Walton scored only 2 pts, but they wer still able to hack out a win
Strategies
  1. Defense: (1st half) 40:10:50 ratio; (2nd half) adjust
Injuries
  1. SF Anthony Bryant (back spasms, 76%, 6 days); SG Kaniel Coley to start at 2, SF Sam Millar to slide at 3

Tip off (1st Half)

15:53, Up 15-5
SG Kaniel Coley doesn't want to wait for the middle of the game to get going. He started out on fire, sinking 4-4 3PT!

11:02, Up 27-13
A couple of fast break baskets, and we increased the lead further. SG Kaniel Coley hitting his 5th triple of the game

6:54, Up 42-15
SG Malik Owes and SF Sam Millar continued our offensive onslaught, even while SG Kaniel Coley is on the bench resting. We're shooting at an incredible 81% FG!

1:47, Up 53-21
SG Kaniel Coley added one more 3. He has 6 for the game

Halftime, Up 53-23

Highlights
  • A near-perfect 20 mins of great shooting and offensive execution: 63% FG, 7-11 3PT, 17 fast break pts, 11 assists. Even if we miss our shots, we grabbed 10 off rebounds resulting in 9 2nd chance pts.
  • We just need to prevent a monumental collapse
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: 1-2-2

Start of 2nd Half

15:41, Up 57-32
MINN starting to show it's vaunted offense. We need to be careful here

11:58, Up 65-36
Before anyone can start thinking the possibility of a big comeback by MINN, SG Kaniel Coley connects on his 7th and 8th triple of the game. Coley with 24 pts

7:58, Up 70-47
We lapsed into consecutive turn overs. I had to keep reminding the team to stay focused. Earlier SG Kaniel Coley, drops trifecta #9.

3:02, Up 80-54

Back-to-back Final Four!!!

Final score: USC - 82, Minnesota - 65

Millar 13, 3, 1, 3 tos

Bailey 8, 5, 1, 2 stls
Dare 5, 7, 0
Wheat 2, 1, 8, 2 stls, 3 tos

Notes
  1. Performance in the 2nd half was nowhere as good as the 1st half, but the advantage we built in early in the game was more than enough. SG Kaniel Coley got hot early; C Antonio Forney and SF Sam Millar provided their usual offense; SG Malik Owes and C Hasheem Bailey providing quality minutes
  2. For Minnesota, SG Jason Walton had a good 2nd half, scoring 17 of his 20 pts

Game #35 - NCAA Tournament National Semi-Final

Postby randy » Sun Nov 24, 2013 12:40 pm

For the 2nd straight year, we faced the #1 team in the country in the Final 4. This year, it's Kansas

4/1/02: (3) #14 USC (29-5, 14-4) vs (1) #1 Kansas (34-2, 15-1)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Key players:
    • Jr C John Price (16.4 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 3.6 bpg, 59% FG, 2-time All Conf, #12 class rank)
    • So C JJ Johnson (12.5 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 2.4 bpg, 50% FG, 1-time All American, 1-time All Conf, #26 class rank)
    • Jr PG Tony Williams (11.8 ppg, #14 class rank)
    • So PG Jason Murdock (9.9 ppg, 4.5 apg, #12 class rank)
  4. Strengths:
    • High-percentage offense - 73.6 ppg (#1 Big 12), 46.7% FG (#1 Big 12)
    • Rebounding - 39.4 rpg (#1 Nat'l), 36.7% OR (#1 Nat'l)
    • Interior defense - 8.6 bpg (#1 Nat'l), 35.2% opp FG (#1 Nat'l), 57.8 ppg (#9 Nat'l)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Would be difficult to find a flaw against at team with a +16 ppg
      differential.
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 1st Big 12; Won Conference Tournament
    • Round 1: Def (16) McNeese St, 61-53
    • Round 2: Def (8) Oklahoma St, 67-63
    • Sweet 16: Def (13) Toledo, 77-71
    • Elite 8: Def (7) Alabama, 71-70
  7. Notes:
    • During the tournament, they didn't exactly run down on their opponents (see list below), and they never had to face a ranked team along the way. One reason is their 3PT shooting, in which they shot on 23% during the tournament so far
    • In their close 1-pt win in the Elite 8 against Alabama, their 2 big men (Price and Johnson) accounted for 40 of their 71 pts, and 23 out of 40 rebounds. If we can limit these 2 guys, we'll have a chance
Strategies
  1. Defense: 2-3 zone; (2nd half) adjust if needed; we face the risk of their guards, esp PG Tony Williams hitting their stroke from the outside, but Williams is only shooting 25% 3PT in the tournament so far
  2. Offense: balanced; we face the best interior defense in the country, so we hope SG Kaniel Coley and company hits their shots; if needed, we may go favor outside
  3. SF Anthony Bryant is ready to play, but we'll stick with the starting lineup we used the past 2 games

Tip off (1st Half)

15:53, Up 11-6
C Antonio Forney was aggressive early, trying to pierce the heart of KAN's defense. As a result, Forney was able to fish 2 fouls out of KAN's top big man John Price. KAN already with 5 team fouls. Unfortunately, Forney also picked up 2 fouls

Our half-court defense is forcing KAN to take outside shots, which is our game plan. What we dont want to happen is allow KAN to get easy transition pts from turn overs, and that what happened exactly on KAN 2 out of 3 FGs

11:26, Up 21-8
KAN fans were stunned when SG Kaniel Foley dropped two consecutive long range triples. We got the other pts from C Hasheem Bailey who fearlessly challenge KAN big men, and C Elliott Dare who got an off rebound put back. The absence of KAN's C John Price is showing its effect now

7:55, Up 23-8
KAN's half court offense is at a mess now, turning the ball over 7 times already. If you take away the 3 break away baskets of KAN, they are shooting just 1-11 on their half court sets

2:36, Up 28-19
KAN began hitting their outside shots. C Antonio Forney got another foul from KAN's C John Price, his 3rd of the game.

SG Kaniel Coley gets his 3rd triple of game, and on the next possession he hits a long 2. Coley leads all scorers with 11 pts. KAN converted 2 FTs to finish the scoring of the 1st half

Halftime, Up 33-21

Highlights
  • This is exactly what we wanted to happen in this game. Shut down KAN's big men by packing the lane and force them to shoot from the outside. KAN is shooting 36% FG, and has committed 10 turnovers.
  • KAN's big men duo of C John Price and JJ Johnson have combined for only 5 pts. Price played for only 3 minutes because of 3 personal fouls
  • We need to play better transition defense, as KAN got 10 fast break pts, which is almost half of their output in the 1st half. To do so, we need to limit our turn overs in the 2nd half (we had 8 in the 1st) to cut down their fast break opportunities
  • KAN already has 5 blocks. As expected, we won't get a lot of inside pts, but we'll continue to mix our outside shooting with inside plays, not necessarily to get pts but to get KAN's big men in foul trouble
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: None
  • Off rebounding intensity: Reduce to 8

Start of 2nd Half

15:24, Up 38-31
KAN has slowly but surely cutting to our lead. They started the half with a 3 pt shot, and then C JJ Johnson beginning to impose his will inside; Johnson has 6 pts, 9 rebs. Meanwhile, C Antonio Forney picked up his 3rd foul, and I have to sit him in the bench

KAN broke our press and scores. Consecutive turn overs on our part, and 2 more FGs for KAN. I have to burn a timeout. I have no choice but to bring in C Antonio Forney

14:07, Up 38-37

Immediately, Forney got the 4th foul of KAN C John Price

Forney splits his FTs. Up 2. Teams exchanged misses, turn overs and shot blocks afterwards.

In our next possession, SG Kaniel Coley receives the pass. Coley puts up a shot. Coley drops in a triple off the glass! It's his 4th 3pt shot of the game. Up 5

KAN answers back with a basket by reserve C John Tann. KAN's frontcourt depth is 2nd to none, as Tann filled in nicely for C John Price. Tann currently with 11 pts, 6 blks. Up 3

On our next play, we go back to SG Kaniel Coley. Coley puts up a shot from beyond the arc. Coley drops one in again off the glass! Up 6. Coley with 17 big pts

After a turn over by KAN, we go back to .... of course, Coley again. Coley catches the pass. Coley shoots. Coley sinks a long one! Coley's 6th triple of the game. Up 9

A miss by KAN. PG Shea Wheat looking for Coley. Coley gets a pass. Kaniel Coley takes a shot. Coley knocks it down for another three! Seven triples (4 in succession over the last 3 mins), 23 pts for Coley. KAN has seen enough, they call a timeout.

10:27, Up 51-39

I told the guys this is still a long game. Continue to play defense

KAN connects for a 2 out of the timeout. Up 10.

You think KAN might have designed some defensive plays against Coley. After a series of screens, the pass is taken by Coley. Coley takes another shot. Coley sticks it again from deep for three! Coley with 26 pts, 5 consecutive 3s (8 in total). You can imagine Dick V saying on the broadcast booth, "Oh baby! This is amazing, with a capital A!" Up 13

I had to make some substitution, including Coley, in preparation for the final few minutes. Our big men even extended the lead prior to the media timeout

7:59, Up 58-43

I reminded the guys that earlier, KAN jumped on us with a 16-5 run in the 1st 4 mins of the 2nd half. So KAN is capable of cutting this lead very quickly. Let's not make the same mistake twice!

3:22, Up 62-43
We turned the ball over at least twice, and our shots were blocked numerous times. Fortunately for us, KAN has been throwing the ball over also, and missing their outside shots. KAN has not scored for at least 5 minutes

We'll slow down the game and take some time

KAN connected on only their 2nd and 3rd triple of the game. A little too late for them

Unbelievable. We're going to the title game. It's my second time in the finals. Fantastic feeling. Many "experts" believed that our lineup this year was not as strong as the team which went to the Final 4 last year. We've done 1 step better this year.

This was a great game. The coaching staff came up with a game plan, and the players executed it perfectly.

Notes
  1. Who would have thought that a player who's got only one skill, and that is to shoot the basketball, will carry us to the national title game. I'm excited on what's he going to do in the finals. The whole nation is excited
  2. Good job also to our big men, who battled out the vaunted front court of KAN. In particular, C Antonio Forney played a very smart game today, and has taken out KAN's C John Price out of the game. Price was hardly a factor, 3 pts, 4 rebs, 5 blks, in just 9 mins on the floor

Game #36 - NCAA Tournament National Championship

Postby randy » Sun Nov 24, 2013 10:24 pm

It's been almost 50 years since Seton Hall won their only national title (1954), while USC is looking to win it's first ever.

4/3/02: (2) #10 Seton Hall (30-7, 12-4) vs (3) #14 USC (30-5, 14-4)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Key players:
    • Sr PG Matt Young (14.3 ppg, 3.6 apg, 1-time All American, 3-time All Conf)
    • So SG Kenny West (14.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 42% 3PT)
    • Sr PF Kenyatta Collins (9.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 52% FG)
    • Sr SG Davey Webb (7.8 ppg, 41% 3PT)
  4. Strengths:
    • 3PT shooting - 304 3pt made (#1 Big East, #4 Nat'l), 39% 3PT (#1 Big East), 72.0 ppg (#2 Big East)
    • Perimeter defense - 17.8 opp topg (#2 Big East, #7 Nat'l), 41.1% opp FG (#3 Big East)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Rebounding (?) - 33.1 opp rpg (3rd worst Big East); could be misleading though, because Seton Hall plays a fast paced offense, allowing more shot and opportunities for their opponents to grab defensive rebounds
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 2nd Big East; Lost Conference Tournament Final
    • Round 1: Def (15) Houston Baptist, 87-52
    • Round 2: Def (7) Kentucky, 73-56
    • Sweet 16: Def #19 (6) Wagner, 60-52
    • Elite 8: Def (8) North Carolina St, 77-75
    • Final 4: Def (5) #25 Brigham Young, 73-65
  7. Notes:
    • It's clear that Seton Hall relies on their guards. Here are the stats of their 3-guard rotation (Young/West/Webb) during the 5 tournament games they played: (Young - 18.0 ppg, 50% 3PT; West - 19.0 ppg, 50% 3PT; Webb - 6.0 ppg, 40% 3PT)
Strategies
  1. Defense: 1-2-2 zone; if we stop their guards from scoring, we give ourselves a good chance
  2. Offense: favor inside; we'll test first their interior defense

Tip off (1st Half)

6:04, Up 31-26

Another turn over. And then SH hits 2 more FTs to go to within 3. Coley drives strong, gets fouled again. Coley sinks 2 FTs. Coley with 20 pts. Up 5

SH hitting outside shots, but we continue our offensive onslaught even without Coley on the floor

2:52, Up 80-61

We'll slow down the game.

Feeling of joy starting to sink in. Coley in the bench, and gave me a big hug, thanking me for the opportunity. I said to him, don't thank me yet. We'll do this gain next year :) And he better get ready with the media-frenzy he's going to get after this game

Let the celebration starts
