The start of a high profile 3 game homestand. All 3 games are nearing sell-out and the Lobo fans are salivating. First up is an intimidating Houston team, a sweet 16 team a year ago, lead by point guard Victor Howe averaging 17.8/g. Their losses have been to UCLA in the championship game of the preseason NIT, and a one point loss on the road to Iona. They have wins over Temple, Maryland, Iowa, and Villanova among others. They play a deliberate offensive style and primarily 1-3-1 zone on defense which we'll have to find some way to crack.
The fans were loud and had a lot to cheer about in the first half, as we took apart their zone shooting 62% from the field and played terrific defense while getting out to a commanding 40-22 halftime lead. We did a great job getting out on their shooters and they went 1-11 from beyond the arc. We need to keep the throttle down in the 2nd half.
OUr shooting inevitably cooled off in the 2nd half, and we let them get to the offensive boards too much (we edge them in rebounding 33-32, but they had us in offensive rebounds 13-7). Our defense was relentless, however and they were never able to pull closer than 13.
Wilson had 4 pts, 6 asts, 3 rebs and a steal in 27 minutes and kept Howe under control on defense. Connely was unavailable this game after banging up his wrist in shootaround (nothing serious, should be ready to go in the next. We sat him out as a precaution), so THompson got all the back up minutes at point and had 7 points, 3 asts, 2 rebs, and just 1 turnover in 14 minutes.
Angeli in foul trouble most of the game was limited to a season low 15 minutes but still got to double figures with 10
Willis had a terrific game defensively, playing much of the time at the 3, and had 8 points, 2 asts, 7 rebs, 4 stls, and a block in 27 minutes. a good night's work for John.
Injo had 6 points 4 rebs, and Martin Ray led us with a career high 20 points, 7 rebs, and 3 more blocks.
A high quality win against a very very good basketball team. Lobo frenzy is in the air in Albuquerque!
Final: UNM 68 Houston 51
