Game #101 - 2003 NCAA Tournament Round of 64

Postby randy » Wed Jan 08, 2014 4:29 am

Mar 17, 2003: (12) Maine (22-9, 12-4) vs (5) #8 Delaware St (28-3, 15-1)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key players:
    • Sr SG Lavell Russell (11.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.0 rpg, 2-time All Conf)
    • Jr SG Jim Turner (12.0 ppg)
  4. Strengths:
    • Ball Handling: 12.0 topg (#5)
    • Rebounding: 36.0 rpg (#13)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • 3PT shooting: 32.6% 3PT (#262)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 2nd MAAC; Won Conference Tournament
Strategies
  1. Force them to shoot outside. They also use predominantly 2-3 zone, so we have to knock down our shots as well

Start of 1st half

ME has shot well from the outside so far. Up 10-9, 15:58. Good scoring duel between SG Cain Ward (10 pts) and ME's SG Jim Turner (11 pts). Up 25-20, 10:17. C Terrell Collins also having a good 1st half, 13 pts. ME slowed down a bot on their scoring lately. Up 40-30, 4:33. ME relatively played well, but they just couldn't keep pace with our torrid scoring. Halftime, Up 54-37.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: ME 47%, DELST 70%

Start of 2nd half

ME has hit a barrage of 3pt shots to cut our lead to as low as 9, but they couldn't make enough stops to sustain their rally. We're still shooting 70% FG. Up 77-58, 10:54. We're still shooting at a very high percentage. I pulled out my key players with 5 mins remaining.

Final Score: Maine - 73, Delaware St - 105

Notes
  • ME came prepared today, and shot better than expected from the outside. Too bad for them, they just caught us at a time when our our offense was in a zone.

Game #102

Postby randy » Wed Jan 08, 2014 5:38 am

Mar 19, 2003: (5) #8 Delaware St (29-3, 15-1) vs (4) #25 Louisville (20-11, 9-7)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 1-3-1 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Key players:
    • Fr SG Matt Brumm (19.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg, #4 class rank)
    • Fr PG Adarrial Gordon (9.7 ppg, #7 class rank)
    • Fr SF Bryen Christian (7.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.1 spg, #17 class rank)
  4. Strengths:
    • Defense: 58.8 opp ppg (#16), 19.5 opp topg (#3), 10.2 spg (#4)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Offense: 65.3 ppg (#242), 44.1% FG (#180), 31.4% 3PT (#291)
    • Rebounding: 29.0 rpg (#285)
    • Ball Handling: 15.8 topg (#294)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 6th Big East; Lost Conference Tournament Semi Finals
    • (Round 64) Def Delaware, 82-61 (Brumm 20 pts; DEL 20 tos)
Strategies
  1. Louisville has the #4 recruiting class this year, and it's easy to see why from their list of key players above. Our advantage is obviously our experience of playing together. They may not have had enough time to gel on offense, but their team is quick and athletic, forcing a lot of turn overs from their opponents. If we're not careful with the ball, we'll be in trouble.

Start of 1st half

LVILLE has 4 turn overs. Up 9-6, 15:36. It's our turn to keep throwing the ball away, and LVILLE able to catch up with their 3pt shooting. Down 13-15, 11:00. What's worse than our 9 turn overs, is we were not able to keep up on transition defense, giving way too many fast break pts. Our 3pt shooting has kept us afloat. Up 26-25, 6:27. Strong as finish as we forced LVILLE to 3 consecutive turn overs in last 1 minute of the 1st half. Halftime, Up 41-36.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Turn overs: DELST 12, LVILLE 15
  • LVILLE's freshmen core group clearly having difficulty solving our 1-2-2 press. We'll press all the time during the 2nd half. Whichever team can control the ball better, most likely will win

Start of 2nd half

No team able to make a big run, as turn overs continue to be a problem for both sides. Up 54-49, 11:15. Both teams now with 20 turn overs each. LVILLE is in the penalty, while we have 6 team fouls. STill anybody's ball game. Up 62-57, 7:51.

We committed 3 more turn overs (23 total), and LVILLE is now closing in. Up 64-61, 5:05. An exchange of basket, and misses, before the last media timeout. Up 66-63, 3:51.

Another bad pass by SG Cain Ward (7 turn overs). LVILLE running again, but PG MIchael Proce able to give up a foul to prevent an easy 2. 2 FTs for LVILLE. Split. Up 66-64, 3:32. SG Cain Ward wants to make it up. Ward launches a 3 and scores! Up 69-64, 3:13.

Miss by LVILLE. We also missed a 3. LVILLE's turn to shoot a 3; they miss. We turn it over again. Up 69-64, 2:27.

LVILLE gets a basket. I call a timeout. Up 69-66, 2:03.

We go to C Brandon Braun. Braun missed, but ball out of bounds in our favor. We reset. SG Cain Ward gets the ball in the right corner. Ward shoots, scores, plus a foul! Ward converts the bonus FT. Up 72-66, 1:41. LVILLE missed their shot, but they got the off rebound. They attempt to drive, but SG Cain Ward comes up with a fantastic block. Loose ball out of bounds, and the refs say our our ball. Timeout. Up 72-66, 1:13.

We'll start slowing the game. We go to C Brandon Braun. Braun buries the short jumper. Timeout LVILLE. We're almost there. Up 74-66, 0:58.

LVILLE's 1st shot was blocked, they recover the ball, and able to score back. Up 74-68, 0:33. LVILLE took a long while to foul, but finally did with only 0:17 left. 1-and-1 for PG Michael Price. Price hits the 1st, and that makes this a 3-possession game. Impossible for LVILLE now. Experience triumphs over youth.

Back to the Sweet 16!

Final Score: Delaware St - 76, Louisville - 68

Notes
  • Our advantage in rebounds, and shooting decently from the 3 (6-14 3PT), were enough to swing this close game into our favor. Certainly not a pretty win, but we're glad to advance in the competition

Game #103 - NCAA Tournament Regional Semi Finals (Sweet 16)

Postby randy » Wed Jan 08, 2014 12:16 pm

Mar 24, 2003: (5) #8 Delaware St (30-3, 15-1) vs (1) #1 Kansas (30-4, 15-1)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Key players:
    • Jr C Ray Johnson (12.9 ppg, 13.3 rpg, 2-time All Conf, #15 class rank)
    • Sr SG Brooks McClinton (13.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, #29 class rank)
    • Sr C Maurice Hanavan (10.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 50% FG, #28 class rank)
  4. Strengths:
    • Rebounding: 41.1 rpg (#2)
    • Defense: 57.6 opp ppg (#6), 36.6% FG (#3), 7.4 spg (#33)
    • Ball Handling: 12.2 topg (#11)
    • Balanced scoring: 7 players average at least 7 ppg
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Shooting: 43.0% FG (#250), 35.8% 3PT (#135)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 1st Big 12; Lost Conference Tournament Finals
    • (Round 64) Def Farleigh Dickinson, 65-50 (Johnson 18 pts, 14 rebs; KAN +24 pts in paint)
    • (Round 32) Def LSU, 62-38 (Hanavan 15 pts; LSU 30% FG)
Strategies
  1. Similar to Kansas' style, we'll clog the lane with our 2-3 defense. Will be a matter which team can shoot well from the outside
  2. We know it's going to be difficult to score in the half court, so we'll press all the time, and hopefully generate enough fast break pts to get a win

Start of 1st half

5 turn overs got us in a bad start. Down 3-6, 15:37. KAN controlling the game with their defense, and we have 8 turn overs already. Down 3-14, 11:56. Took us more than 10 minutes to score our 2nd basket of the game. Down 5-18, 7:45. We went down by as much as 20, score was 11-31; got a couple of 3s to fall in. Halftime, Down 19-33.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: DELST 24%, KAN 35%
  • Turn overs: DELST 11, KAN 3
  • Rebounds: DELST 18, KAN 25
  • Fast break pts: DELST 2, KAN 18
  • Our shooting is not to blame why we are down in the 1st half; it's our poor rebounding and transition defense that needs improvement

Start of 2nd half

We converted a couple more 3pt shots, but still keep on throwing the ball away. Down 25-39, 15:38. Another 3 by SG Cain Ward. Down 11. On KAN's inbound, we stole the ball on their back court and score an easy 2. Down 9. We get another steal, and score on transition. KAN called a timeout. We scored 7 pts in less than half minute. Down 32-39, 15:00. However, KAN scored the next 5 pts, as we committed at least 4 more turn overs (total of 17 in the game). Down 32-44, 11:47.

KAN scored on a 3, and we're down 15 again. SG Cain Ward scored 5 straight pts, and after a KAN miss, PG Brandon Costa converts a 3pt shot. We're knocking on the doors again. Down 40-47, 9:18.

We had a couple of chances to reduce the deficit to 5, but we couldn't convert. KAN increased their lead to 9 again. Both teams trading a lot of misses; our time window to turn this game around is now getting smaller. After several scoreless minutes for both teams, SG Cain Ward (26 pts) drains his 6th triple of the game. Down 47-53, 4:20.

KAN answers back with a jumper. Down 47-55, 3:55. C Brandon Braun got blocked; Braun (2 pts) having a tough time scoring inside. We'll just go heavy outside. KAN scores again. Timeout. Down 47-57, 3:14.

We'll also increase pace, and shoot at will; 4 shooters on the floor now. We miss again. But we stole the ball back. C Brandon Braun gets only his 2nd FG of the game. Down 49-57, 2:30. Another turn over by KAN.

We miss a 3. Follow up by C Brandon Braun also did not go in. KAN finally secures the ball. And KAN scores another basket. Timeout. Down 49-59, 1:48.

Look for 3s now. SG Lewis Lepore gets a 3; we're not giving up. Down 52-59, 1:37. KAN's C Ray Johnson drives and scores on a tough fade away. Down 52-61, 1:25.

We missed a 3. KAN also missed. We hurried up, and SG Cain Ward scores from deep again. Down 55-61, 0:47.

We'll foul intentionally, and play m2m.

But we get another steal from the back court! SG Lewis Lepore scores on a layup! Down 57-61, 0:40. Actually no need to foul immediately, just play intense pressure defense first to try to go for a steal; and then foul on their front court.

We foul. Problem is, it's only our 3rd team foul. We foul 4 more times in succession. 1-and-1 for KAN now. They miss the front end! We secure the def rebound. Timeout. Down 57-61, 0:29.

We go for a quick shot, and then foul right away. SG Cain Ward was left open on top of the key for a 3. BANG! Down 60-61, 0:16.

We'll go for a quick foul. But KAN able to break our press quickly. We frantically try to foul, but SG Lewis Lepore made a mistake of fouling a KAN player attempting a 3; missed but 3 FTs. Gets 2 of out 3 to sink in. Timeout. Down 60-63, 0:03.

Do we have enough time for a desperation 3 given that we'll be inbounding from our back court? Apparently, not enough time to even put up a shot (even at max pace). Very disappointing

Notes
  • Very good effort by the team. Even though we forced ourselves to change strategy and go for quick outside outside shots than usual, we didn;t quit and just run out of time to catch up. Memorable last game for SG Cain Ward
