Game #227 - 2007 NCAA Tournament Round of 64

Postby randy » Mon Jan 13, 2014 4:49 am

Mar 17, 2007: (10) Colorado (17-14, 10-8) vs (7) Clemson (20-11, 11-7)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Key players:
    • Sr SF Mike Leib (11.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg)
    • So(R) PF Dan May (13.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg)
  4. Strengths:
    • Rebounding: 35.2 rpg (#21)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Offense: 44.0% FG (#186), 32.7% 3PT (#267)
    • Ball Handling: 15.9 topg (#310)
    • Defense: 68.0 opp ppg (#202), 36.4% opp 3PT (#258), 12.8 opp topg (#307)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 5th Pac 12; Lost Conference Tournament Finals
Strategies
  1. Use 2-3 zone; balanced offense

Start of 1st half

Good defense so far, as COL can't knock down their perimeter shots. Up 10-0, 14:34. COL scored their 1st FG at the 8:57 mark. Up 20-9, 7:35. Despite COL's struggles on offense, we're not out of the woods yet in this game, as we're not shooting the ball well either. Halftime, Up 30-15.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: COL 13%, CLEM 41%
  • Rebounds: COL 16, CLEM 24
  • We need to sustain our defensive intensity. Aside from SG Cory Mastern (14 pts, 6-10 FG), other players need to step up on offense

Start of 2nd half

SG Cory Mastern scoreless in the 2nd half, but our other players have indeed stepped up, contributing to increase our lead. Up 41-22, 13:29. COL scored on back-to-back 3s to cut our lead to 13, but that was the closest they have gone, as we also connected on some of our outside shots. SG Matt Hein excellent off the bench with 12 pts, 4-7 3PT. Up 55-34, 7:26. Much better shooting performance for COL in the 2nd half, but our lead was safe enough.

Final Score: Colorado - 42, Clemson - 67

Box Scores
Mastern 19, 6, 2, 3-3 3PT (*)
Hein 15, 1, 1, 5-10 3PT

REB: +18 (+5 off)
TO: +2
Pts in paint: +22
2nd chance: +7
Fast break: +11 (11-0)
Notes
  • Aside from good perimeter defense in the 1st half, another contributing factor to our win was we did not allow a single fast break point

Game #228 - 2007 NCAA Tournament Round of 32

Postby randy » Mon Jan 13, 2014 10:00 am

Mar 19, 2007: (7) Clemson (21-11, 11-7) vs (2) #12 Syracuse (25-8, 11-5)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Key players:
    • Fr SF Brad Coursey (17.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, #3 class rank)
    • Sr SG Danny Pride (11.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2-time All Conf, #30 class rank)
  4. Strengths:
    • Perimeter Defense: 29.0% opp 3PT (#3), 16.9 opp topg (#18)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Ball Handling: 16.2 topg (#325)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 5th Big East; Lost Conference Tournament Semi Finals
    • (Round 64) Def San Diego St, 67-48 (Coursey 18 pts, 9 rebs)
Strategies
  1. Syracuse likes to play fast, helter-skelter basket ball. If we can safely get the ball down to our post players, we should be able to control the pace
  2. On defense, we need to double on Coursey

Start of 1st half

After a slow start, we scored 10 straight pts. Up 12-6, 14:46. We got into turn over problems, and has allowed SYR to have more chances on offense. Down 19-24, 7:31. We continued to go on a downward path the rest of the 1st half, as we keep on giving the ball away. Out penalty situation compounded our problems. Halftime, Down 27-45.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FT shooting: CLEM 4-7, SYR 15-16
  • Turn overs: CLEM 11, SYR 5
  • We were playing well early in the 1st half, as we had some success pressuring SYR's ball handlers; somehow, that energy was gone. We'll press all the time in the 2nd half, play harder on defense. Our inside plays not working, so we'll try to shoot more from the outside.

Start of 2nd half

We're playing with more energy on defense, but we can't generate enough offense to significantly cut their lead. Down 37-54, 13:47. Still no improvements, and time is running out. We have already increased our offensive pace. Down 44-64, 7:17. Got it down to 13, but with only 2+ mins left. Gallant effort in winning the 2nd half, but not enough time to completely erase their lead.

Final Score: Clemson - 63, Syracuse - 73

Box Scores
Akins 19, 2, 2
Dickel 10, 7, 1
Harvey 10, 3, 1, 2 stls
Mastern 9, 10, 2, 3 stls
Davis 6, 2, 0
Jones 5, 0, 0
Lewis 4, 1, 1
Hein 0, 2, 4
Lee 0, 2, 0, 4 tos
Walker 0, 0, 1, 2 stls
Stats Comparison
FG: 41-45%
REB: -1
TO: -1
Pts in paint: +16
2nd chance: Even
Fast break: +12 (16-4)
Notes
  • We played SYR on even terms on most categories. SYR had 13 more FTMs, which made the difference
  • For upcoming seasons, we need to focus more on playing (and improving) our m2m defense. We'll have bad days on offense, but if we want to become contenders, it will be our defense that would give us wins even if we're playing below par
  • On offense, we'll increase our pace, hoping that it will lessen our turn overs
