Rookie Six Report – Year Seven

#17 PG Cort Majishun, Memphis Grizzlies – 23.5 points, 10.1 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 0.4 blocks
Career stats – 18.8 points, 9.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.3 blocks

Using the efficiency statistic, Majishun had the third best season in the league, but he was only one the All NBA Third team. Why? Because Ledaryl McMillian and Michael Taylor were the two guys ahead of him. Majishun really is a superstar in the league and is finally turning the Grizzlies around.

Was a major part of his second championship in as many years as fellow Rookie Six member Jack Dawkins went down with a broken leg. McKenzie is now 29 years old and square in his prime so will need to continue this form for a few years more to really cement himself as one of the best in the class.

One of only two members of the Rookie Six to change teams, Stevenson is loving being in Cleveland at the moment. With Jamil Fleming and Oskar Carlsson feeding him the ball his scoring numbers have gone up as well as his love for the game. He will be a free agent next season compared to the rest of the group who have an extra year.

He’s not playing PG finally but he is using the ball a lot which explains his assist numbers but the worrying thing about “The Wizard” game is that he is a below average shooter, averaging only 40.6% for his career.

If a team had all six on their squad they might not lose a game. A starting five of Majishun/Long/Dawkins/McKenzie/Stevenson with Jones backing up the 1/2/3 is just unfair. I've tried to trade for either Cort or Kenneth and the other team just won't have a bar of it.

2032 NBA Draft

Before the draft Miami offers me a completely one sided deal that I have to take a second to actually see if they were joking with me. Obviously I accept.

Brooklyn trade:
PF Willis Owens

Miami trade:
SG Ross Lampley
C Austin Huge
2032 2nd round pick (#33)

Winner – Brooklyn. This just isn’t close. Huge has a team option this off season so will be cut, saving nearly $6 million while Lampley will be a free agent next season. Hell, the second round pick is nearly in the first round. While the Heat get three more years of mediocrity with Willis Owens.

1 – Toronto – C Derrick Culuko
Obvious choice here as he is well and truly the best prospect in the draft.

I try and trade Matias Perez because I believe that he turns the ball over too much but the options that I was looking weren’t moving. Matias is in that limbo area where he’s good but isn’t good enough to get a better player, even with the #4 pick added. I guess he’s staying here.

2 – Orlando – SG Shaun Tebbs
From #2 to #7 it’s a bit all over the place so any pick here (if it isn’t horrible) is good enough. It’s strange to see Joe West be passed over but it has been explained that he has a terrible attitude and even if he is there at #4 I’m not picking him.

3 – Charlotte – SG Joe West
I guess it doesn’t matter. His talent is there, no doubt but his attitude is extremely toxic and desperately needs to be worked on. Great pick if he can get his head on straight.

There’s nothing we really need at the moment so I go for the great attitude, high work ethic guy who will be a great team effort, even if it’s a bit of a reach.

4 – Brooklyn – PG Randy Canal
He’s a quality point guard that will never be a great, all star type player but he’s good with his teammates. The experts rip the pick which I expected but there wasn’t anyone who really stood out to me so why not go for the home run?

5 – Los Angeles – PF Chris Waters
Great athlete and rebounder and will do well learning from Lars Ray. Nice pick.

6 – Houston – C Clifton Scholl
Very nice defender and at 7’5” his size is intimidating. Inhales rebounds just because of his size but can his slow speed stop him from realizing his NBA dream?

7 – Seattle – C Tony Favors
Another seven foot plus centre, Favors is a better scorer than Scholl but worse defender. I’m surprised that Charles Dubbs has been left in the green room, with two lesser centres going in front of him.

8 – Atlanta – PF Jerry Jones
Meh, good pick for this draft but in any other one it would be too high. Not good, not bad, average pick.

9 – Oklahoma City – SF Maurice Marlow
Dropped a little because of defence as he can be quick slack on that end but has many options on the other end. Good pick for #9.

10 – Indiana – SF Josh Mayes
Who? Put up good stats at West Virginia but I have reservations of him doing much exciting in the league. The experts like him but he just doesn’t do it for me.

11 – Detroit – PF Gerrod Phelan
Offensively he is very raw but if he keeps up him progress he might end up a poor man’s Nathaniel Jackson. Dynamic scorer but lax in other areas.

12 – Nevada – SF Tarrell Gates
Terrible passer and dribbler, not the best rebounder, can’t block a shot but he… has stamina, I guess?

13 – Cleveland – SF Joe Morgan
A really, really good mid range shooter, think of Kenneth Long. Will never be as good as Long but has the knack of running his man to exhaustion.

14 – Phoenix – PG Brian Stackhouse
The best point guard left and a good spot for him. He’ll do well in Phoenix and could even start a few games there next season.

15 – Charlotte – C Charles Dubbs
Finally! This is the steal of the draft. He’s raw, can’t rebound but boy does he interest. I hope he gets a chance because he could be something in a few years.

16 – Minnesota – SG Joem Hawkins
Nice slasher that can also hit the three, he has the offensive skills to stick around, especially in a team with Enrique Mendez and Camah Williams. He’s not the best passer but he won’t have to be. Good pick.

17 – Cleveland – PG Russell Anderson

Winner – Washington. Even though the pick became a decent player, Nelson will add so much a team that didn’t need much adding to. They do have a problem with Nelson, JD Lawons and Jacob Alexander at the SG position now so they need to work out rotations.

PG Reggie Dobbins

Winner – Both. This is a trade for security. Both Jehiel DeSantis and Tiburcio Tommasini are free agents so if either bolts they have someone to slot in. If they re-sign, then they have a quality bench player.

Nevada trade:
C Kurt Harrington
2032 2nd round pick

Winner – Nevada. Harrington is useless while Brown averaged 18 points and 9 assists last season. ‘Nuff said.

Memphis trade:

Winner – Both. The Grizzlies are trying desperately to build around Cort Majishun so getting one of the most dependable players in the league is a step in the right direction. Forrest is probably a better player but the Celtics now have seven centres on their squad which is just unsustainable.

Renouncing people is going to be hard this year as we have some quality players coming into free agency and we might not be able to fit them all in.

To make things a little easier I trade Donte Rock and Jaron Robinson to Utah for Hector Carter. Carter is useless as a player but he has a $9 million contract that has a team option, so guess who is getting cut? I then trade Ross Lampley and Darius Nolan to Seattle for Tyson Joyner. The deal, like the Utah one is lopsided towards them but we get another $8 million team option player who will also get cut. I may have overpaid for expirings but they should be worth it.

I renounce Michael Byrd while giving a qualifying offer to Jason Harriman, making him a restricted free agent. I also hold onto Isiah Ryan and Chris Jackson but I don’t think we can keep both. Hector Carter, Austin Huge and Tyson Joyner don’t have their team option picked up and are renounced, putting us at $1.5 million over the cap but that doesn’t include CJ’s new contract and Harry’s near max deal which he will get.

Randy Canal, Cliff Havens, Mark Lyday, Pat Sola, Marlin Bain and Isiah Ryan are invited to the summer league and with those names we shouldn’t lose a game.

Stupid curse. We did lose as Cleveland beat us 117-111 in game one but all of our guys played well. Pat Sola was our best with 23 points and 11 rebounds, Cliff Havens added 20 points, Isiah Ryan and Mark Lyday combined for 23 points and 19 rebounds while Randy Canal finished it off with 15 points and 15 assists. Marlin Bain didn’t play a minute as he is still stupidly raw. Drew Thorne was the best for the Cavs with 22 points and 8 rebounds.

That’s more like it as we pummel the Sixers 109-92 behind Isiah Ryan’s 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. The guys shot badly with Pat Sola, Mark Lyday and Cliff Havens combining for 20/52. We got some nice bench scoring from Derrick Morton (13 points, 6 assists) and Colin Inge (11 points in 13 minutes).

The experts might have panned the pick but I’m really digging Randy Canal who had 15 points and 9 assists in our 110-91 win over Toronto. Cliff Havens was also great with 16 points and 8 rebounds while Marlin Bain got his first taste of NBA basketball with 2 points and 4 rebounds in 7 minutes.

Game four was even better as we smashed the Hornets 115-78 behind Pat Sola’s 13/15 night for 26 points and 9 rebounds. Randy Canal impressed me again with 8 points and 9 assists while Mark Lyday didn’t score much but still had 11 rebounds. Hell, completely unknown Marek Boykin had 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in 23 minutes. Good show.

We didn’t win all of our games but we did win most of them as we finish off the summer league with a 110-90 cruising over Atlanta. Isiah Ryan showed why he will command the big bucks with 27 points as Cliff Havens helped him out with 19 points of his own.

This free agency is extremely top heavy, with four big names and then a lot of good, not great players. Here’s the list –

I straight away offer Jason Harriman a 5 year, $55 million deal which is just over $1 million less than a maximum deal. I also give Chris Jackson a 4 year, $32 million deal which is underpaying but I don’t want to have him with a fat contract when he’s 36 years old. I leave Isiah Ryan for the time being.

Nothing happens for a very long time, at least a week, before Tiburcio Tommasini re-signs with Portland. Also, Jason Harriman signs an offer sheet with Atlanta which I quickly match.

The Hawks didn’t rest on their laurels, signing Marquis Bowen to an offer sheet to try and steal him away from the Knicks. A lot of people re-sign with their teams as Earl Harris and Andy Kante are the major players.

Jason Collins goes back to OKC and it’s beginning to be a boring free agency.

Whelp, Camah Williams re-signs with Minnesota and Nathaniel Jackson goes back to Utah and I’m done with this free agency. I’ll try and move in on some veterans to fill in our roster but I’m not expecting miracles.

I offer Isiah Ryan way less than he is worth but I just can’t offer him the amount of money that he wants or deserves. He will be a bench big man here so if he can go somewhere else for more money and better minutes then good for him.

And there he goes to Orlando for a 4 year, $31.5 million contract. I hope he can spread his wings there and turn that sinking ship around. To make things better, CJ re-signs here for four more years. Now to fill in the blanks.

The first to fill n the blank was Michael Byrd who comes back for a two year minimum deal. Following him was Art Haynes, Jason Allen, Robert Jackson and Gray Largent. They’re nearly all PFs and I don’t expect them all to stick around but it’s good to have some veterans on the squad.

Training camp comes and goes and we have some nice looking players. Randy Canal is definitely in the running to be the first point guard off the bench. Cliff Havens could possibly bump John Kelly from the starting SG spot giving me a headache in what to do with Rowling and his fat contract. Disappointingly Mark Lyday hasn’t improved as much as I would have liked and is only a good player with not much growing to do. Marlin Bain will be in the D-League this season but his rebounding and defensive abilities are very exciting while our older guys haven’t regressed much.
