Finding ways to win

Game #44

Postby randy » Sat Oct 18, 2014 2:01 am

Dec 19, 2001: Miami OH (3-6) @ Alabama St (7-3)

Pregame Notes
  • MIAOH is 0-4 on the road, scoring just above 51 ppg

Tip off

Our tall lineup giving us a slight edge on rebounding. We're still struggling from the perimeter, but has been successful scoring inside,
13:49, Up 17-10

MIAOH's 4 triples is about all the offense they produced. We continue to rebound well.
7:54, Up 27-18

MIAOH has made a living on the perimeter; they already connected on 6 3PT shots.

Halftime, Up 42-35
Pleased with how a lot more players contributing on offense, allowing me to properly rest and rotate. We need to shot down their shooters in the 2nd half, going exclusively m2m with higher def intensity,

Start of 2nd half

Better defense, forcing MIAOH to turn the ball over many times.
13:45, Up 52-40

We extended the lead 15, but MIAOH storming back, currently on a 13-2 run. We're also in the penalty.
7:49, Up 58-54

Teams trading baskets, not allowing each other to score more than 4 straight pts. PF David Andrews still adjusting to his new position, and is 0-6 FG. We'll play with a 3-guard lineup the rest of the way.
3:41, Up 68-63

Inside drives by both SG Drew Walker and SG Haven Wilkerson resulted in fouls by MIAOH, and we scored 4 straight FTs
2:58, Up 72-63

We finished strongly, and able to effectively use up the clock.

Final Score: MIAMI (OH) - 68, Alabama St - 82
2nd straight home game that we almost threw away a big lead. We had a nice recovery though in the end. We may be starting future games with a big lineup, but we'll most likely end up using 3-guards at the end of close game (SGs haven Wilkerson and SG Drew Walker playing together)

Game #45 - Start of Conference Play

Postby randy » Sat Oct 18, 2014 9:15 am

Dec 29, 2001: Alabama A&M (6-5, 0-0) @ Alabama St (8-3, 0-0)

Pregame Notes
  • It's offense vs defense. ALAM shoots 46% FG (#1 SWAC) while we limit our opponents to 40% FG (#1 SWAC)

Tip off

We''re going to the low post early in the game, getting fouled in the process, but we're making only 50% of our FTs.
13:29, Down 7-9

We're into another offensive drought. Worse than that, our defense allowing ALAM to shoot 53% FG. We need more intensity on defense.
6:42, Down 13-22

Every time we had a little bit of momentum going, it's either we turn the ball over or ALAM hitting another 3. ALAM is 6-12 3PT today

Halftime, Down 25-31
This is still far from over, but we need to lock down ALAM's shooters

Start of 2nd half

Our offense is being generated by our defense. ALAM already with 5 turn overs in the 2nd half, en route to our 18-5 run. Our perimeter defense only allowing ALAM to shoot just 1-5 3PT in the 2nd half
12:49, Up 43-38

Our offense has slowed down, but the defense continues to apply a lot of pressure. Although the increased def intensity got us already in the penalty.
7:48, Up 47-43

Our starting unit are on the floor, and all are properly rested. We scored on our last 3 possessions, and got ALAM into the penalty as well.
5:01, Up 53-44

SG Haven Wilkerson and PF David Andrews might have shot only 13-33 FG combined, but both of them just hit enough clutch baskets towards the end to keep our score running. Our defense took care of the rest.

Final Score: Alabama A&M - 50, Alabama St - 65
It was a tale of 2 halves. After scoring 31 in the 1st, ALAM only able to score 19 pts in the 2nd half. Our defense in the 2nd half forced 13 ALAM turn overs, while allowing just 1-9 3PT (after giving up 6-12 in the 1st). Very good effort by the players in turning the game around defensively, after we were down by 10 during the 1st half.

Game #46

Postby randy » Sat Oct 18, 2014 11:09 am

Jan 2, 2002: Alabama St (9-3, 1-0) @ Alcorn St (5-7, 0-1)

Pregame Notes
  • ALCST likes to slow down the game, and limit the possessions by their opponents; in all of their 5 wins, they only gave up no more than 67 pts

Tip off

We want to make this a fast pace game, which is not what ALCST is used to playing. SG Haven Wilkerson already with 10 pts.
13:36, Up 13-9

SG Drew Walker off the bench with 9 pts, 3-4 3PT.
7:45, Up 28-17

We're knocking down perimeter shots today, which we haven't done for a long while now.

Halftime, Up 46-33
We're on pace to score 80+ pts, which I don't think ALCST can't match. SG Haven Wilkerson leads all scorers with 16 pts.

Start of 2nd half

ALCST able to convert 3 3PT shots, and cut our lead to as lows as 5. But we quickly answered with a 7-0 run, including the 4th triple of SG Drew Walker. We need to tighten up on our m2m defense.
13:29, Up 58-46

We are sticking to our plan of making this an offense-focus match, and (to our advantage) the 2 teams just trading baskets. We're shooting 9-20 3PT
7:38, Up 66-54

Perhaps feeling the fatigue of a higher tempo game, ALCST started committing a pile of turn overs during the latter part of the game, allowing us to blow this game wide open.

Final Score: Alabama St - 82, Alcorn St - 61
We effectively controlled the tempo of the game, which forced ALCST to a lot of mistakes esp in the 2nd half. We only committed 9 turn overs today.

Game #47

Postby randy » Sat Oct 18, 2014 2:15 pm

Jan 5, 2002: Northwestern St (6-7, 1-1) @ Alabama St (9-3, 1-0)

Pregame Notes
  • In their last road game, NWST managed to score just 41 pts on 27% FG.

Tip off

NWST having all sorts of problems on offense (1-7 FG, 3 turn overs), defense, and rebounding (we pulled down 7 offensive rebounds already)
13:43, Up 13-2

SG Drew Walker has 4 of our 5 turn overs; I took him out to be able to regroup. It's not a big lead, but we have control of the game because of our defense ad rebounding
7:45, Up 24-13

3PT shots and FTs allowed NWST to climb back, even cutting our lead to as low as 5. SG Haven Wilkerson scored our last 14 pts of the 1st half.

Halftime, Up 38-31
I instructed the players to not to lose focus on defense. I expect NWST to take more 3s in the 2nd half, so we have to be aware of that.

Start of 2nd half

We started out the 2nd half just like we did during the 1st. However, NWST hit 2 straight 3s to remind us that they are still in striking distance.
13:59, Up 54-39

Both teams putting up a lot of pts the last few minutes. NWST in the penalty. I don't think NWST catching up. Bench will finish this game.
7:40, Up 72-51

Too much garbage time at the end. And our bench warmers made the most out of it. We scored 57 pts in the 2nd half.

Final Score: Northwestern St - 66, Alabama St - 95
We were 10-13 3PT (71%!); even C Seneca Popp hit one from downtown. Combining our 2nd chance pts and fast break pts, we scored a total of 47, which is almost half of our output.

Postby randy » Sun Oct 19, 2014 1:40 am

Jan 9, 2002: Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-8, 2-1) @ Alabama St (11-3, 3-0)

Pregame Notes
  • ARPB's Sr C SG Antoine Childs, who missed all of last season and the non-conf games this year due to academics, is now back and has averaged 22 ppg the last 2 games (both wins)

Tip off

Both teams came out to run and score. We should try to settle down and make this a defensive game.
13:16, Down 12-16

It is ARPB who is playing with much more energy on defense. We already have 9 turn overs. We have to turn this game around quickly, or this could be over soon.
6:40, Down 16-28

A forgettable 1st half performance. 12 turn overs and 38% FG shooting are not the only bad news. We allowed ARPB to score 14 fast break pts.

Halftime, Down 22-36
The 4 guards in our regular rotation turned the ball over 9 times. I need to shake up our lineup in the 2nd half. But more importantly, we need to make stops esp in transition.

Start of 2nd half

3rd string PG Travis Reuter started the 2nd half. PF David Andrews and SG Haven Wilkerson hit back-to-back 3s to start our comeback. We have to continue to be patient.
15:46, Down 32-41

We picked up 3 consecutive steals, and scored a couple in transition.
14:01, Down 38-41

We turned the ball over twice, and ARPB able to bounce back with an 8-0 run, including a couple of 3s. We wasted an opportunity to complete a comeback. We have to start all over again.
11:36, Down 38-49

We're staging another comeback, completing a 3pt play by C Chris Hawkins, a 3 by SG Drew Walker, and we got ARPB into the penalty. Walker hits his 2nd 3PT shot of the 2nd half. Another unsuccessful possession by ARPB. We scored 2 FTs on our next play, and we have tied the game!
8:04, Tied at 51

We finally took the lead on a low post play by C Will Perkins. It has been an exchange of big shots since then.
4:33, Up 58-56

We got a steal and scored on the break. ARPB's SG Antoine Childs answered back with a jumper; Childs having a good game with 16 pts. On our next play, PF David Andrews scored a 3.
3:25, Up 63-58

We forced them to another ARPB. On our next play, we missed a shot, but C Seneca Popp getting an off rebound and scored on a putback. ARPB calls a timeout.
2:38, Up 65-58

ARPB with another crucial turn over, and we scored another FG. Time running out. We slowed down the game to hold on.

Final Score: Arkansas-Pine Bluff - 63, Alabama St - 72
What a turn around! We were down by as many as 17 sometime in the 1st half. We outscored ARPB in the 2nd half, 50-27.

Game #49

Postby randy » Sun Oct 19, 2014 2:13 pm

Jan 12, 2002: Alabama St (12-3, 4-0) @ McNeese St (7-8, 1-3)

Pregame Notes
  • We lost 2 games against MCNST last season, including the conference tournament semifinals denying us a berth on the NCAA tournament
  • Offense has been very cold for MCNST lately, averaging only 55 ppg in their 3-game losing streak. Part of the reason is the academic suspension of 3 of their players.

Tip off

We got off to a slow start, hitting just 2-11 FG. But we made our last 4 attempts, including consecutive triples from SG Drew Walker off the bench. MCNST already with 4 3PT shots. We'll tighten up our m2m defense.
11:21, Tied at 18

It was only during the last 3 mins where we our defense became consistent. SG Drew Walker continued his great shooting form, leading all scorers with 10 pts.

Halftime, Up 36-31
MCNST missing their last 6 attempts from 3PT, after making their 1st 4. What we need to improve is our transition defense (MCNST already with 10 fast break pts)

Start of 2nd half

MCNST committing 8 turn overs in less than 7 minutes into the 2nd half.
13:19, Up 49-38

We had every chance to blow this game wide open, thanks to our 9-12 3PT shooting. But MCNST not giving up, esp PG Terry Hoyer who has 20 pts, 4-4 3PT. It was a good shootout between Hoyer and SG Drew Walker who continues to lead us with 18 pts, 4-5 3PT.
7:35, Up 65-52

MCNST's perimeter shooting has been keeping them in this game, and they just hit another one to come close within single digits.
1:38, Up 74-65

Both teams in the penalty. We split our FTs. We were called for a foul in the other end, and MCNST converted both. We turned it over in our back court, and MCNST taking advantage scoring another basket. Timeout.
0:36, Up 75-69

We just need to hold on to the ball, as MCNST would most likely foul. They did, and PG Johnny Victor steady from the line hitting both FTs. A missed 3 by MCNST sealed the game for us.

Final Score: Alabama St - 79, McNeese St 72
Both teams shot the ball well, esp from the outside. MCNST's starters had to play more minutes due to their depleted bench, and fatigue must have been a reason for their turn overs.

Postby randy » Mon Oct 20, 2014 8:04 am

Jan 16, 2002: Austin Peay (8-8, 2-3) @ Alabama St (13-3, 5-0)

Pregame Notes
  • Each player in PEAY's 4-guard rotation averaging in double -figures scoring, and all of them are deadly from the outside.

Tip off

Our perimeter defense doing well, as we have not allowed PEAY's shooters to get good looks, and we have forced 4 turn overs.
13:57, Up 12-7

Everybody on our side is contributing on offense. PEAY continues to throw the ball away, and we're scoring heavily on transition to give us a big lead,
6:46, Up 32-16

PEAY playing better on offense in the later part of the 1st half, but they can't make stops on the other end, as our 3PT shooting started to click (we shot 5-10 3PT)

Halftime, Up 51-31
Great passing in the 1st half, 16 assists out of 21 FGMs. Fast break pts comparison is 16-0.

Start of 2nd half

PEAY getting their shots to fall, but they are not making stops on the defensive end.
13:47, Up 63-42

PEAY had no answer to our offensive barrage today. Shooting 62% FG at this stage of the game is very hard to beat. PF David Andrews is having superb game, 20 pts, 8-13 FG. Eraly rest for our starters.
7:39, Up 79-47

PEAY got their outside game going, but it was way too late for them.

Final Score: Austin Peay - 70, Alabama St - 94
A game where everything that could go right, went right for us today. I don't know where to begin - 26 assists, 11-21 3PT, 11 steals, 20 fast break pts. just 8 turn overs. All these with our season leading scorer, SG Haven Wilkerson, playing only 15 minutes. 2 players achieved (or tied) career-highs in this game - C Chris Hawkins (12 pts) and PG Thomas Scott (10 asts); PF David Andrews almost tying his career high 21 pts.

Postby randy » Mon Oct 20, 2014 12:20 pm

Jan 19, 2002: Texas Southern (11-6, 5-1) @ Alabama St (14-3, 6-0)

Pregame Notes
  • TXSO both won their 2 road conference games so far, by a combined margin of just 5 pts. TXSO puts up a lot of pts on the board, partly because they go to line frequently at almost 23 FTA per game (#8 national)

Tip off

TXSO already with 6 turn overs and in the penalty.
13:35, Up 15-6

Even though we're shooting just 38% FG, we're clearly getting more opportunities to score because of TXSO's 10 turn overs.
6:05, Up 26-12

We extended the lead to 18, but TXSO had a good run to end the 1st half, as they started to be more consistent on offense. TXSO's early penalty allowed us to score 16-19 FTs.

Halftime, Up 39-32
We're in the lead only because of the FTs we scored in the 1st half. Our outside shots not falling today, 1-10 3PT. We'll go favor inside in the 2nd half, and add more intensity on defense.

Start of 2nd half

Our FG% rising in the 2nd half, because majority of our shots are inside the paint. TXSO adding 6 more turn overs in the 2nd half, bringing their total to 17 for the game. SG Haven Wilkerson having another big game, 28 pts
11:54, Up 61-44

When our outside shots began to fall, mostly from SG Drew Walker (18 pts off the bench), the game has officially became a blow out
7:27, Up 74-48

Bench got plenty of playing time again.

Final Score: Texas Southern - 59, Alabama St - 88
Our defense can still get us ahead even if we're not shooting well, just like in the 1st half. But when our offense is clicking (49-27 scoring advantage in the 2nd half), we'll be hard to beat in the conference. Freshmen C Robbie Wise and SG Drew Walker gaining more confidence as the season progresses. Very good sign.

Game #52

Postby randy » Tue Oct 21, 2014 2:18 am

Jan 23, 2002: Alabama St (15-3, 7-0) @ Prairie View (3-15, 2-5)

Pregame Notes
  • Offense is a major problem for PV, averaging just 60 ppg and 29% 3PT. 2 players on academic suspension plus one suffering a season-ending injury depletes their bench
  • Our reserve SF Thurman Clark is out with an injury (strained abdominal, 75%)

Tip off

PV deliberately trying to slow down the pace. We adjusted early with a 3-guard lineup to quicken up the game, and we're currently on a 7-0 run.
13:16, Up 13-10

PV an't get any decent looks from the perimeter. We could have had a bigger lead, if not for the 5 combined passing errors by our PGs
7:10, Up 24-15

We got off running and getting more fast break pts (11 in the 1st half) to blow this game wide open.

Halftime, Up 42-21
Aside from playing defense, we are also doing a good job on the boards (19 to 11). PV is shooting just 32% FG, going 0-6 3PT.

Start of 2nd half

PV got off to a quick 11-2 start. We have since settled down on our offense, but we need to put more intensity on defense, esp of PV's SF Renaldo Walker who scored 12 of his 14 pts at the early goings of the 2nd half.
13:14, Up 56-40

Scoring has slowed down for both teams. This is not yet a done deal for us.
7:52, Up 63-46

PV scored on a 3 on their next play to cut down our lead to 14. But for the last 7+ minutes of the game, PV was limited to just 2 pts.

Final Score: Alabama St - 74, Prairie View - 51
Offense wasn't as well executed as compared to our past games, but we were still able to control this game with defense and rebounding.
