Finding ways to win

Game #73

Postby randy » Sat Oct 25, 2014 3:17 am

Dec 7, 2002: Idaho (4-2) @ Alabama St (6-0)

Pregame Notes
  • Idaho shoots almost 22 3PT attempts per game. Not much inside scoring

Tip off

We got off to a quick start and led by 9, but ID getting back with their outside shooting. ID is early in the penalty.
13:49, Up 16-12

We algot into penalty, and both teams getting pts from the line.
7:01, Up 34-30

SF Jason Brown's 2nd triple started a 16-0 run, as ID continues to pick up fouls and also had too many turnovers which we turned to fast break pts. ID's offensive output wasn't that bad, but our offensive juggernaut was on display in the 1st half.

Halftime, Up 58-40

Start of 2nd half

The turn over problems continue for ID, and our offense hasn't slowed down. Plenty of time left, but I don't see ID coming back in this game unless their defense can step up several notches.
12:29, Up 72-44

I opted to rest my starters the remainder of the game. ID's shooting improved, but almost impossible to erase the lead we built earlier.

Final Score: Idaho - 76, Alabama St - 91
Refs were busy with their whistles today. A combined 45 fouls were called, resulting in 55 FT attempts (ID: 16-22, ALST: 27-33)

Game #74

Postby randy » Sat Oct 25, 2014 12:12 pm

Dec 10, 2002: North Carolina A&T (3-3) @ Alabama St (7-0)

Pregame Notes
  • NCAT won their last 2 road games

Tip off

We're 0-5 3PT
13:44, Down 8-10

Ball movement is very minimal on offense. If not for SG Joe Lewis' 9 pts, we would have been in a deep hole now.
7:54, Tied at 12

Only 6 FGs, coupled with 8 turn overs, which resulted in the worst 1st half we have this season.

Halftime, Down 22-32
We'll have to go more inside, as our perimeter shooting is really off today. We'll also have to win this game with defense.

Start of 2nd half

We went down by as many as 13. Afterwards, we're finally making some stops on defense, forcing NCAT to 5 turnovers already in the 2nd half. We just need to be patient. SG Joe Lewis just missed 2 FTs that would have cut our deficit to 3.
12:06, Down 26-41

NCAT hitting 3s every time we build a little momentum. SG Drew Walker having a horrible game, 0-4 FG, 5 turn overs; I had to take him out.
7:14, Down 47-51

We got into penalty, and NCAT able to score from the line to keep themselves with a slight lead as we continue to catch up. A turn over by NCAT (their 10th of the 2nd half) that we turned to a transition basket, finally tied the game.
3:59, Tied at 55

NCAT threw the ball away. We have a chance to finally take the lead. Missed a 3. NCAT turns it over again. NCAT with 12 turn overs in the 2nd half. Another chance for us. PG Johnny Victor burying a big 3, to finally put us ahead. Timeout NCAT.
2:45, Up 58-55

NCAT ties it up also with a 3PT shot! Timeout
2:11, Tied at 58

ALST: SF Jason Brown missed on a drive
NCAT: We get a block and recovered the ball. Timeout
1:29, Tied at 58

ALST: We want it on the hands of SG Joe Lewis. Lewis gets the ball. He's wide open for a 3. Miss!
NCAT: We got called for a foul. They split. Timeout.
1:06, Down 58-59

ALST: We initially went to C Robbie Wise on the low post. But Wise can't get a shot. We rotate the ball. PF David Andrews gets the ball on top of the 3PT line. Andrews put up a shot. Andrews hits the 3! Timeout NCAT.
0:45, Up 61-59

NCAT: They put up a jumper. Miss. But the refs say there was contact. I can't believe the call, but nothing I can do. 2 FTs for NCAT's SG Brian Dillon. These will be Dillon's 1st trip to the line this game. Makes the 1st. Makes the 2nd. Timeout (my last).
0:35, Tied at 61

ALST: We'll try to put up the last shot. But SG Joe Lewis makes a bad pass.
NCAT: They are not calling a timeout. 0:27 left. PG Johnny Victor steals the ball.
ALST: We have no timeouts. 0:08 left. Victor outlets to SG Joe Lewis. Lewis whips a pass to SF Jason Brown who is in the left corner. Brown puts up a jumper. Brown makes it! Timeout NCAT.
0:01, Up 63-61

NCAT inbound at the back court. Not enough time to even put up a shot.

Final Score: North Carolina A&T - 61, Alabama St - 63
We shot only 3-14 3PT, but made 2 outside shots (the 3 by PF David Andrews and the jumper by SF Jason Brown) when it mattered most. Obviously not a good 40-minute game for us, but I'm glad the players had the patience and resilience to pull this one.

Game #75

Postby randy » Sat Oct 25, 2014 1:48 pm

Dec 14, 2002: Alabama St (8-0) @ Coppin St (5-3)

Pregame Notes
  • CSC plays the 2nd fastest tempo in the country, with a very high offensive efficiency (59.4, #7 national). This could be a tricky match up for us.

Tip off

We seemed to have adjusted quickly to the fast pace game, racing to a 13-3 lead. But CSC able to come back just as quick
13:52, Up 17-15

SG Joe Lewis has been performing better on the road so far this season. Lewis with 17 pts, including 4-6 3PT.
7:50, Up 32-29

SG Drew Walker scored 12 straight pts, to help us extend our lead to 12. But a strong finish by CSC got themselves back in this high-scoring affair.

Halftime, Up 52-49
We'll slightly increase the def intensity in the 2nd half.

Start of 2nd half

It seems the reverse has happened, as CSC continues to score at will, while we can't buy a basket. CSC has outscored us 23-6, since late in the 1st half where we led 47-35
15:48, Down 53-58

SG Drew Walker scored 7 of our next 9 pts, but no else is making shots in the 2nd half. Fortunately for us, scoring has definitely slowed down for both teams.
9:20, Tied at 62

SF Jason Brown, who hit the game winner in our last game, is struggling today with 0-9 FG. Gives me not much of a choice, but to play with a 3-guard lineup
5:37, Down 67-68

We were able to tie at 70. CSC then hit a 3, and split their FTs. We're in the penalty.
3:12, Down 70-74

Miss by CSC. SG Joe Lewis takes it strong, gets a basket, plus a foul. Lewis makes the FT to get his 30th pt of the game.
2:45, Down 73-74

I fielded in a more defensive unit. Another miss by CSC. On our next play, C Robbie Wise takes the ball inside and scores!
2:15, Up 75-74

CSC turns the ball over on their possession. I put SG Drew Walker back on the floor for additional shooting. Walker takes a 3. Miss. We get the off rebound. Walker gets a 2nd chance. Walker hits a 3 this time! That is Walker's 5th 3PT shot of the game
1:48, Up 78-74

CSC gets a basket on the other end to cut our lead to 2. SG drew Walker takes another 3. He missed this time. Timeout CSC
0:55, Up 78-76

CSC missed on their drive. But they get the rebound. Another chance, and they scored. Timeout.
0:39, Tied at 78

We found C Robbie Wise on the low post, in isolation with his defender. Wise takes it inside, but missed the shot. CSC with the ball. 0:24 left. They are not calling a timeout. CSC missed a jumper. We dribbled to the front court, and called a timeout.
0:04, Tied at 78

Big decision. Who will take the last shot? SG Joe Lewis (30 pts, 10-19 FG) or SG Drew Walker (18 pts, 6-13 FG)? We decided to go to Lewis.

Lewis was well defended. Can't get the ball to him.. PG Johnny Victor forced to put up a shot. Miss. We go to OT

End of Regulation, Tied at 78

Start of OT

I decided to give SF Jason Brown another chance. Both teams missed on their 1st possession. CSC turned the ball over twice after that, and we scored a transition off one of those turn overs. CSC called for a foul on our last play. Both teams in penalty. Brown goes to the line for a 1-1 to possibly extend our lead to 4. Brown missed the front end. Not a good day for Brown.
3:32 OT, Up 80-78

Another turn over by CSC, their 3rd in this OT period. We miss a 3, but C Marcus Moore gets the offensive rebound putback to go.
3:15 OT, Up 82-78

CSC gets an inside basket. We go back C Marcus Moore. Moore missing this time.
2:38 OT, Up 82-80

CSC called for traveling; 4th turn over in OT. On the ensuing play, we found SG Drew Walker in the right corner 3 (Walker came back to the floor a couple of plays earlier, in lieu of the struggling SF Jason Brown). Walker lets one go. Walker sticks it from deep for three! Walker with 21 pts, 6 from downtown
2:14 OT, Up 85-80

CSC can't find an open shot. Shot clock at 3 sec. Their center has to put up a medium range jumper. It goes in!
1:41 OT, Up 85-82

PG Johnny Victor missing a medium-range jumper. But C Marcus Moore to the rescue once again with an offensive rebound, and the follow up is good!
1:21 OT, Up 87-82

We get a steal. And Marcus Moore running the floor, gets the pass, and scores on the fastbreak! Timeout CSC
0:57 OT, Up 89-82

3 possession game. We can start burning some time. I put in a more defensive and rebounding unit.

CSC hits a 3. They are certainly not giving up. They fouled immediately on the our back court. SG Joe Lewis to shoot 1-1. Lewis missed the front end. Not over yet.

We got called for a foul. CSC with a 1-1. Before they shoot their FTs, I fielded in good FT shooters in case they foul again after. CSC also missed the front end. We get the rebound, and CSC fouls. 2 FTs for PG Johnny Victor. Victor gets the 1st, but missed the 2nd. CSC still with a chance, but they have no timeouts left
0:24 OT, Up 90-85

CSC missed 2 attempts from 3 on their next possession, and time ran out.

Final Score: Alabama St - 90, Coppin St - 85
Another escape act. We seem to have a magnet for these type of games. Our 2 freshmen, SG Joe Lewis and C Marcus Moore, were phenomenal today. And the advantage of having a deep bench; despite the struggles of SF Jason Brown, we have someone like SG Drew Walker who can step in and make big shots. We attempted 36 shots from 3PT today, making 13

Game #76

Postby randy » Sun Oct 26, 2014 4:00 am

Dec 17, 2002: Missouri St (2-6) @ Alabama St (9-0)

Pregame Notes
  • MOST is 0-4 on the road this season. They shoot only 9 3PT attempts per game, 8th fewest in the country.

Tip off

We started the game shooting 8-9 FG. SG Joe Lewis already with 12 pts.
12:31, Up 18-14

MOST also shooting decently at 47% FG, keeping themselves close in the game.
7:09, Up 25-20

SG Joe Lewis had 19 pts, but his scoring is somewhat negated by his 5 turn overs. Foul count in the 1st half was 10-1, and that allowed MOST to score some pts to the FT line and take the lead

Halftime, Down 33-34
We have to turn things around in the 2nd half with our defense. MOST only has 5 turn overs in the 1st half; we need more opportunities to score on transition

Start of 2nd half

SG Joe Lewis had back-to-back 3s less than 1 minute into the 2nd half, to get us back in the lead quickly. Our defense (MOST: 5 turn overs in the 2nd half) and rebounding (we have 11 offensive rebounds so far) allowing us to take control of this game.
13:23, Up 49-38

MOST hitting occasional outside shots, but our rebounding has gave us several 2nd chance opportunities to keep ourselves ahead in double digits. MOST is in the penalty.
5:50, Up 64-53

Our starters are well rested for a big finishing kick, and they have completely pulled away in the end.

Final Score: Missouri St - 64, Alabama St - 84
MOST with 15 turn overs in the 2nd half, making their 51% FG shooting almost a non-factor. Our "big 3" of SG Joe Lewis, SF Jason Brown and C Marcus Moore combined for 68 pts, 23 rebs.

Game #77

Postby randy » Mon Oct 27, 2014 1:50 am

Dec 21, 2002: #24 Alabama St (10-0) @ Niagara (6-4)

Pregame Notes
  • NIAG not a high-scoring team, but win games because of their rebounding (35.4 rpg - #30 national)) and defense (40.6% opp FG)

Tip off

Both SG Joe Lewis and SF Jason with 2 early fouls.
11:28, Down 14-15

Our defense has not been good enough, allowing NIAG to shoot 53% FG, and they are controlling the slow pace of the game. Both Lewis and Brown with 3 fouls each. We need to start improving on the defensive end.
5:27, Down 20-25

Defense and rebounding turned things around for us. Our bench scored 26 of our 34 pts in the 1st half. SG Drew Lewis (16 pts, 4 triples) and SF Terrance Walls (6 pts, 4 rebs) stepped up, as starters SG Joe Lewis and SF Jason Brown spending more time in the bench due to foul trouble.

Halftime, Up 34-27
We scored 11 2nd chance pts in the 1st half.

Start of 2nd half

Started our really cold in the 2nd half. We are piling up the fouls again; SG Joe Lewis called for his 4th foul.
13:40, Up 39-33

Our FG shooting has now dropped to 35%. The foul trouble on our key players has screwed up our rotation. Fortunately, our defense still holding up as we cling to the lead.
7:07, Up 48-45

Our entire starting unit on the floor now. NIAG able to come close at 52-50, but had unsuccessful trips on their last 3 possessions.
2:15, Up 56-50

After another NIAG miss, SG Joe Lewis able to nail a 3 to give us a 9 pt lead. NIAG answered back with 4 straight FTs, as we are already in the penalty. Timeout
1:07, Up 59-54

SG Joe Lewis hits a running jumper. Timeout NIAG.
0:51, Up 61-54

Another foul called on us. NIAG scoring 2 more FTs. Timeout
0:46, Up 61-56

Back up PG Thomas Scott makes a crucial passing error (starting PG Johnny Victor has fouled out earlier). Timeout NIAG
0:31, Up 61-56

We made a defensive stop, which ended any hopes for a NIAG comeback

Final Score: Alabama St - 62, Niagara - 56
As our 2 best players played just a combined total of 33 minutes, the rest of the team did enough to cover, and stepped up when we needed them.

Postby randy » Mon Oct 27, 2014 5:19 am

Dec 31, 2002: Alabama St (11-0, 0-0) @ Alabama A&M (5-6, 0-0)

Pregame Notes
  • ALAM with 3 players averaging double-figures in scoring

Tip off

We are out of synch on offense, already with 5 turn overs.
13:47, Tied at 11

We got ourselves a 7 pt lead earlier, but ALAM started to rain 3s (5-8 3PT), mostly when we play zone. We'll shift to m2m defense full time
7:43, Down 20-24

Except for ALAM's buzzer beating 3, our perimeter defense got better and we also started doing a better job on the boards. Both teams shooting below 40% FG. We could be on another close finish here.

Halftime, Up 37-35
More than half of ALAM's pts came from beyond the arc. We'll be in a better situation if they shoot percentage from 3 in the 2nd half.

Start of 2nd half

We regained our outside shooting, and also forcing more turn overs on ALAM leading to fast break pts.
12:21, Up 58-49

Pace has definitely increased in the 2nd half, and ALAM not able to keep up in scoring. We were also getting contributions on our inside players. And then SG Drew Walker just hit 3 consecutive triples, as we continue to increase our lead.
5:03, Up 80-58

We knew what we need to adjust in the 2nd half. After hitting 6-11 3PT in the 1st half, ALAM went 1-8 in the 2nd half (before adding 3 triple during garbage time)

Final Score: Alabama St - 91, Alabama A&M - 71
We scored 54 pts in the 2nd half. Our big men not only won the battle on the boards, but also provided a significant amount of pts in the low post during the 2nd half, to complement our outside shooting. We shot 12-22 3PT

Game #79

Postby randy » Mon Oct 27, 2014 7:52 am

Jan 4, 2002: Alcorn St (9-3, 1-0) @ Alabama St (12-0, 1-0)

Pregame Notes
  • Including non-conf games, ALCST is on a 7-game win streak. ALCST still plays a slow-tempo game, which severely limits their opponents offense. They lead the SWAC in fewest opp ppg, and lowest opp 3PT% (just 28%)

Tip off

C Marcus Moore very productive on both ends of the floor, with 7 pts, 5 rebs. ALCST's 4 turn overs helping us push the tempo
12:53, Up 15-2

After a poor shooting start, ALCST has converted 5 of their last 6 shots, including 2 3PT shots.
7:58, Up 25-17

ALCST has been nailing a lot of tough shots from the perimeter, despite our increased intensity in defense. But they dont have answers in stopping our freshman duo of SG Joe Lewis (17 pts) and C Marcus Moore (12 pts, 7 rebs)

Halftime, Up 43-34
We are dominating the game in most aspects, including 2nd chance pts (11-0) and fast break pts (11-2). Nothing wrong with our defense, except that ALCST keeps making those contested shots.

Start of 2nd half

SF Jason Brown also in double figure scoring with 10 pts. C Marcus Moore (18 pts) continues being aggressive on offense. Together with SG Joe Lewis' 24 pts, our big 3 has combined to score 52 of our 60 pts.
13:35, Up 60-40

ALCST still making the occasional tough outside shots, but they can't afford to just trade baskets with us at this stage of the game. This is over, except for the finals score. Bench will finish the game
7:39, Up 73-47

The shootout of both team's benches in the end became the exciting part of the match.

Final Score: Alcorn St - 68, Alabama St - 94
For the 2nd straight game, we scored 50+ pts in the 2nd half. THe most pleasing part of this win is that we only had 6 turn overs

Game #80

Postby randy » Tue Oct 28, 2014 5:42 am

Jan 7, 2002: Alabama St (13-0, 2-0) @ Northwestern St (6-7, 1-1)

Pregame Notes
  • NWST with almost 25 FT attempts per game (#3 national)

Tip off

Both teams with just 1 turn over each
12:52, Up 12-10

Our defense was solid, limiting NWST to just 38% FG. SG Joe Lewis having a good all-around game with 13 pts, 6 rebs, 5 asts. SF Jason Brown (8 pts) heated up towards the end of the 1st half.

Halftime, Up 34-24
We also did a good job limiting NWST to just 2 F attempts in the 1st half.

Start of 2nd half

NWST still shooting below 40% FG, but starting to get to the line more often.
13:25, Up 45-33

Our shooting % also beginning to drop, as both teams finding it hard to score. Our major concern though is that we got to the penalty with more than 12 minutes left.
7:29, Up 47-37

Both teams still unable to put up too many pts on the board. SG Joe Lewis scoring our last 5 pts
3:33, Up 52-42

We can afford to trade misses by NWST, and that is what happened for the remainder of the game.

Final Score: Alabama St - 54, Northwestern St - 45
Despite a poor offensive showing (not much support for SG Joe Lewis), I am pleased that our defense was consistent the entire game. Another factor for the low scoring game was that both teams controlled the defensive glass well, resulting in just 2 2nd chance pts each.

Game #81

Postby randy » Tue Oct 28, 2014 10:08 am

Jan 11, 2002: # 18 Alabama St (14-0, 3-0) @ Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-12, 0-3)

Pregame Notes
  • ARPB major problem this season is their rebounding, averaging just 25.1 rpg (3rd worst national)

Tip off

We're finding it easy to score (7-10 FG) against ARPB's defense, both inside and out.
12:24, Up 16-9

We got into penalty (SF Jason Brown with 3 fouls), allowing ARPB to score 8 pts from the line.
6:57, Up 30-18

Our bench scored 28 pts in the 1st half, led by SG Drew Walker's 15 pts, to further extend our lead.

Halftime, Up 52-32
We shot a scorching 75% FG in the 1st half

Start of 2nd half

The fact that SG Joe Lewis (8 pts) has not even reached double figures, shows our balanced scoring effort.
13:50, Up 62-37

I didn't see the need to over extend our starting unit, and the bench got plenty of playing time today.

Final Score: Alabama St - 92, Northwestern St - 64
It was raining 3s today; ARPB shot 10-24 3PT, we had 12-22.
