Finding ways to win

Game #178

Postby randy » Sun Nov 09, 2014 8:34 am

Dec 29, 2005: Auburn (4-7, 0-0) @ Alabama (8-4, 0-0)

Pre-game Notes
  1. AUB forces their opponents 17.5 topg, which is pretty good for a team that plays very slow pace.

Tip off

We're shooting 50% FG. Our 4 turn overs has given AUB chance to score some transition baskets
11:13, Up 17-16

We limited AUB to just 1-9 3PT shooting in the 1st half. Our defense also forced 9 turn overs on AUB. But AUB's 14-15 FT shooting has kept them close in this game. Good scoring battle between SG Jimmy Anderson (16 pts) and AUB's SG Kurtis Bullett (14 pts)

Halftime, Up 40-37
We have to learn how to play good defense, without picking up fouls.

Start of 2nd half

Our offensive rebounding and pts in transition have been a major factor at the start of the 2nd half. AUB still can't hit from deep, now at 1-11 3PT.
13:21, Up 55-45

AUB continues to score from the line (20-23 FT), as the calls have been tight on our defense. PG Kevin Bailey has fouled out.
7:57, Up 67-59

We're shooting good enough (51% FG) to offset all those FTs being awarded to AUB. But AUB continues to inch closer
5:03, Up 73-70

Both teams not making their shots the past 2+ minutes
2:28, Up 76-73

AUB breaks the silence, as SG Kurtis Bullet (26 pts) sinks another jumper. We turn it over, and AUB scores on a break away. Just like that, they take the lead. Timeout
1:58, Down 76-77

I was very upset on the huddle.

We shifted to a slightly smaller lineup, with SF Antonio Jenkins at the 4. This stretched the defense of AUB. We went to C Sherman Price at the post. Price able to go inside and score
1:46, Up 78-77

Another foul on us. I've been "working the refs" all game long. AUB gets both FTs. Timeout
1:33, Down 78-79

SF Brian Guinn called for the traveling violation. Our 15th turn over. AUB's PG Adam Cross gets away from his defender. Cross shoots. Miss. But Cross gets the rebound and scores. What a horrible defensive effort. Timeout
0:49, Down 78-81

We can still go for a 2-and-1. C Sherman Price gets a quick basket down low.
0:38, Down 80-81

3 secs differential between game clock and shot clock. We get a steal. I didn;t realized I have another timeout. C Sherman Price took an ill-advised jumper (I forgot that the 2-for-1 check box is still ticked. Damn!). Missed. AUB has the ball. We have to foul, which we did. 0:09 left. AUB's PG Adam Cross gets both again; Cross is 11-12 FT today. Timeout
0:09, Down 80-83

We have to go for a 3. We can't get the ball to SG Jimmy Anderson. PG Kevin Bailey shoots a long 3. Missed.

Final Score: Auburn - 83, Alabama - 80
This is one of those home games we can't afford to lose in the tough SEC. We played well majority of the game, but can't make stops towards the end. Very disappointing game.

Game #179

Postby randy » Sun Nov 09, 2014 10:35 am

Jan 2, 2006: Alabama (8-5, 0-1) @ #4 Arkansas (12-3, 1-0)

Pre-game Notes
  1. ARK's top recruits this season, Fr PR Jim Crocker (#7 rank) and Fr C Jason Watson are averaging a combined 14.3 rpg
  2. ARK forces opponents to 18.9 turn overs per game (#3 nat'l). In their 1st conference game, OLEMISS had 28 turn overs. If we're not careful with the ball, this game could become very ugly for us.

Tip off

We hit our 1st 2 shots, and that's about it for our offense. We have 6 turn overs already
13:16, Down 4-11

We can't get any open looks on offense, just 4-16 FG. Compounding our problems is our eraly penalty once again.
7:36, Down 9-26

We tried every possible option on defense, but ARK scored in a variety of ways

Halftime, Down 23-42
We're not pressuring ARK enough on their offense; we have zero stls and zero blks in the 1st half.

Start of 2nd half

A better effort so far in the 2nd half, at both ends of the floor
11:54, Down 38-51

Our 2nd unit doing well, and got our deficit to within 10. Still possible.
5:57, Down 49-59

ARK scored the next 4 pts, and we never had a chance to cut the lead to single digits the rest of the game.

Final Score: Alabama - 57, Arkansas - 70
A much better 2nd half (we outscored ARK, 34-28), but we need to play well the entire game to have a chance against a national contender on their home court.

Stats show we're almost on even terms with ARK, except on turn overs where we had 17. I've given up the idea of having SG Kelvin Gaines playing as our backup 1, as he is turn over prone. We'll have Gaines use a primary backup 2, which means we have no choice but to use walk on PG JB Kendrick as our back up 1.

We've been using 3-man rotation (C Zac Adams, C Sherman Price, and C Landon Landram) on the 4 and 5 spots, but those 3 are not athletic enough to play long minutes. Our best additional option is another walk on, PF Greedy Hayes, to play back up 4. Which means we have to use 2 walk on players, as part of our regular rotation from now on.

Game #180

Postby randy » Sun Nov 09, 2014 11:23 am

Jan 5, 2006: Mississippi (7-6, 1-1) @ Alabama (8-6, 0-2)

Pre-game Notes
  1. Feels like a must-win situation for us, as we can't afford to lose our 1st 2 home conference games.
  2. OLEMISS plays fast tempo, and they take a lot of FTs, which is one of our major problems this season (giving up lots of FTs)

Tip off

SF Antonio Jenkins with 8 pts, 4-5 FG. OLEMIS pushing the tempo, but they are taking mostly bad shots (29% FG, 0-5 3PT).
10:56, Up 18-8

We had only 3 turn overs in the 1st mins of the 1st half, and 4 during the last 2 mins. Our 13 pt lead was reduced to 6, until SG Jimmy Anderson hits a 3 at the buzzer.

Halftime, Up 42-33

Start of 2nd half

OLEMIS got off to an 8-2 start to cut our lead to 3. We eventually settled down to restore our advantage. However, we're very early in the penalty already.
13:27, Up 53-43

OLEMIS went on a 9-0 run, which forced me to call an early timeout
10:40, Up 53-52

Our scoring drought continues, having made just 1 FG in the last 7 mins. PG Kevin Bailey has fouled out, and C Sherman Price with 4
6:53, Down 55-58

Our turn over bug has hit us again. OLEMIS scored 5 more FTs, and I called another timeout. OLEMIS now on a 20-2 run
6:53, Down 55-63

After some choice words on the players during the huddle, we got ourselves back quickly, with our own 13-5 run, mostly from PG Kelvin Gaines and SG Jimmy Anderson
3:20, Up 68-65

Our run continued, as we didn't allow to score another pt again. What a roller coaster of a game

Game #181

Postby randy » Mon Nov 10, 2014 12:48 am

Jan 9, 2006: LSU (7-8, 1-2) @ Alabama (9-6, 1-2)

Pre-game Notes
  1. LSU shooting just 41.3% FG, last in the SEC

Tip off

We have given up transition baskets to LSU early in the game. We have to reduce LSU into a half court team, where they don't shoot well
10:56, Tied at 13

We had sucess with our inside plays, led by C Sherman Price's 9 pts. The most significant factor that helped us built a lead is that we didn't give up a single FT to LSU

Halftime, Up 35-24
Teams combined for 20 turn overs in the 1st half. If we can reduce LSU's fast break pts (11 in the 1st half) i the 2nd half, we can take this game easily.

Start of 2nd half

It was C Zac Adams turn to dominate the inside at the start of the 2nd half. SF Antonio Jenkins hits 3 triples, and we are threatening to blow blow this game wide open.
10:49, Up 57-38

We were coasting along with a 24-pt lead. But LSU had a big run, and was able to reduce our lead to just 7, with a combination of FT shooting (we're in the penalty), and successful drives to the basket
1:04, Up 67-60

LSU had to give up fouls to stop the game clock, and walk on PG JB Kendrick had plenty of FT attempts in the end.

You just can't relax against SEC teams.

Postby randy » Mon Nov 10, 2014 8:12 am

Jan 12, 2006: Alabama (10-6, 2-2) @ Mississippi St (7-9, 1-3)

Pre-game Notes
  1. MSST averaging just 60.6 ppg, last in the SEC. They also turn the ball over more than 16 tmes a game

Tip off

SF Alonzo Jenkins with 12 pts. MSST is 0-4 3PT
10:14, up 19-13

Tams combined for 21 turn overs in the 1st half (MSST: 11), but we shot the ball better (59-43%). Our +10 rebounding advantage also was a major factor

Halftime, Up 39-25

Start of 2nd half

After missing their 1st 6 attempts from downtown, MSST hitting their last 4 3PT shots.
13:26, Up 50-38

MSST's shooting went cold middle of the 2nd half, where we built a 21 pt lead and coasted along. C Sherman Price had to play limited minutes today because of a slight injury, but thankfully the rest of our big men (C Zac Adams, C Landon Landram, and walk on PF Greedy Hayes) contributed significantly today, both in scoring and rebounding

Postby randy » Mon Nov 10, 2014 12:41 pm

Jan 16, 2006: Tennessee (8-8, 3-2) @ Alabama (11-6, 3-2)

Pre-game Notes
  1. TENN averaging 81 ppg in their current 3-game winning streak

Tip off

We are defending well on the perimeter (TENN: 1-6 3PT), but our 5 turn overs preventing us from taking the lead.
10:34, Down 11-13

TENN has really slowed down this game. It was only late in the game where we scored some transition baskets to speed up the game a little bit.

Halftime, Up 39-25
We're pitting more focus on shutting down TENN's shooters, and has so far working well (TENN: 2-11 3PT)

Start of 2nd half

3 early turn overs on our part, plus TENN's improved outside shooting, evaporated most of our lead in an instant
13:38, Up 42-41

TENN briefly took the lead, after making their 3rd triple of the 2nd half. Our 2nd unit responded, and initiated a 10-0 run, to reclaim the lead. Both teams in the penalty
7:16, Up 54-48

TENN scored on 2nd chance opportunities in 3 consecutive possessions. I had to call a timeout, and tell the team that we are being bullied down there.
5:24, Up 54-53

SF Antonio Jenkins scored 2 straight baskets, and C Sherman Price splitting his FTs, to give us a mini 5-0 run. After a split FTs also by TENN, SF Antonio Jenkins hits both of his FTs on the other end.
3:08, Up 61-54

We played excellent defense on TENN's next 3 possessions, who forced contested 3PT shots which they all missed. SF Antonio Jenkins added another FT; Jenkins scoring 7 of our last 8 pts.
1:12, Up 62-54

Another missed 3 by TENN, and the next 2 made FTs by SG Jimmy Anderson virtually sealing this game for us.
