Game #199 - 2006 NCAA Tournament Round of 64

Postby randy » Sat Nov 15, 2014 6:55 am

Mar 16, 2006: (13) New Mexico St (19-10, 10-4) vs (4) #2 Alabama St (32-1, 15-1)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. Jr SG Darrell Mance (11.0 ppg, 46% 3PT)
    2. Sr C Jarveen Osteen (9.9 ppg, 9.6 rpg)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 1st WAC; Champion, WAC Tournament
  • Strengths
    1. Rebounding: 33.5 rpg (2nd WAC), but they get a fair amount on the offensive end
  • Weaknesses
    1. Shooting: 42.9% FG, and they don't shoot a lot of 3s

Tip off

Poor shooting start, with just 3-11 FG (SG Joe Lewis is 0-3 FG).
13:35, Down 8-9

No one can seem to find their mark on offense, as we slid down further to 22% FG.
7:43, Down 10-15

Got down by 7. We decided to go full time with straight-up m2m defense, and came up with a 7-0 run to tie, and managed to stay close the rest of the 1st half.

Halftime, Down 25-26
Our 8 turn overs is also a major reason why we're down. Our deficit would have been larger if not for the 5 missed FTs by NMST

Start of 2nd half

Scored the 1st 5 pts of the 2nd half, to take the lead. NMST bounced back. After being down 30-32, SG Joe Lewis finally hit his 1st FG of the game, a 3PT shot, and that started a 9-0 run, mostly generated by our defense. After a FG by NMST, Lewis hits his 2nd 3 of the game.
12:05, Up 42-36

We have 11 steals already, which generated a lot of easy baskets on our offensive end.
6:00, Up 57-46

The 3rd triple by SG Joe Lewis put us ahead by 16 with less than 5 mins left, and NMST never recovered.

Final Score: New Mexico St - 54, Alabama St - 74
Not the best offensive showing we had, but our defense helped gave us points to win. We outscored NMST 49-28 in the 2nd half

Game #200 - 2006 NCAA Tournament Round of 32

Postby randy » Sat Nov 15, 2014 9:44 am

Mar 18, 2006: (5) #25 Georgetown (20-10, 9-7) vs (4) #2 Alabama St (33-1, 15-1)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. So PG Devin Miller (14.3 ppg, 4.1 apg)
    2. Jr(R) SF Scott Cliff (12.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 7th Big East; Quarter Finalist, Big East Tournament
  • Strengths
    1. Outside shooting: 25.4 3PT attempts (#3 Nat'l)
  • Weaknesses
    1. Rebounding: 31.6 rpg (7th Big East).
    2. Relies mostly on their guards (top 4 scorers are guards). We need to focus our defense on the perimeter.

Tip off

Had to burn an early timeout, as GEORG raced to an early lead with 3 triples already.
17:13, Down 0-13

Starting to settle down on defense, as GEORG made only 1 of their last 7 attempts from downtown. Our offensive execution needs improvement though, shooting just 36% FG together with 6 turn overs
9:15, Down 12-21

We continue to knocking on the door, but GEORG still hitting some occasional outside shots, esp PG Devin Miler who already has 16 pts (4-7 3PT). We finally tied the game with a minute remaining, and took the lead on a 3PT shot by SG Chris Warhank with less than 10 secs left.

Halftime, Up 38-35
Our comeback was fueled by our defense, forcing 9 turn overs on GEORG. SG Joe Lewis led us with 13 pts, while C Marcus Moore with 8 pts, 9 rebs

Start of 2nd half

11-3 run, as GEORG only having 1 FG so far in the 2nd half. 22 of GEORG's FG attempts were from beyond the arc.
13:11, Up 49-38

GEORG continues to throw the ball away (17 turn overs). SG Chris Warhank hits consecutive 3s, and SF Rashad heating up after a relatively quiet 1st half. We're pulling away from GEORG now, who only has 2 FGs so far in the 2nd half, both 3PT shots from their center.
8:24, Up 61-41

GEORG finally able to put a string of baskets, but they can't make defensive stops on the other end.

Final Score: Georgetown - 56, Alabama St - 77
Two straight games where we had a shaky start, but played much better in the 2nd half. C Marcus Moore did a yeoman job in rebounding and defense.

GEORG's PG Devin Miller finished with 21 pts (5-9 3PT), but only 5 in the 2nd half.

Game #201 - 2006 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16

Postby randy » Sat Nov 15, 2014 3:38 pm

Mar 23, 2006: (4) #2 Alabama St (34-1, 15-1) vs (1) #1 Georgia (29-3, 14-2)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. So SG Tyrone Henderson (16.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg)
    2. Fr PF Damon Gattison (11.4 ppg, 3.7 bpg)
    3. Fr PG Clyde Johnson (11.8 ppg, 5.5 apg)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 1st SEC; Champion, SEC Tournament
    2. (Rd 64) Def Eastern Washington, 73-46 (Johnson 20 pts)
    3. (Rd 32) Def Brigham Young, 73-46 (Johnson 21 pts, 7 asts)
  • Strengths
    1. Talent and Depth: So deep that Fr SG Bill Penn, rated #4 recruit this season, has played for only 1 min the entire season
    2. Defense: 54.8 opp ppg (#1 nat'l), 35.3 % opp FG (#1 nat'l), 18.3 opp topg (#4 nat'l)
    3. Rebounding: 37.8 rpg (#1 nat'l),
  • Weaknesses
    1. Almost none. Probably experience; their 4 leading scorers are either freshman or sophomore. Classic battle between experience vs youth

Tip off

We get to feel early how good GA's defense is, as we're shooting just 1-8 FG
14:55, Down 4-9

Consecutive 3s by SF Rashad Scott and SG Chris Warhank got us ahead, and forced GA to a timeout. We decided to duoble team GA's PF Damon Gattison, as he has the ability to take his man off the dribble. We have a 12-3 run now, with C Keith Bohm scoring 2 baskets underneath, 4 pts off the bench
11:08, Up 18-12

GA quickly erased our lead, and it has been a see-saw battle since. SG Chris Warhank scored our last 7 pts. We are in the penalty
7:21, Down 25-26

Defense has ruled most of the 1st half. Both teams with 8 turn overs each. SG Chris Warhank drained another 3, to hike his total to 13 pts to lead scorers. GA's starters were on the floor more than 90% of the time.

Halftime, Down 30-33
We only scored 2 fast break pts in the 2nd half; we have to get more easy baskets in transition and not let GA set up their half court defense. SG Joe Lewis (4 pts, 4 asts) has to be more active in scoring.

Start of 2nd half

3 quick team fouls in the 1st minute of play had me up in my seat and arguing with the refs.
15:57, Down 35-39

We have 3 consecutive turn overs that led to fast break pts by GA. Called an early timeout, before this game gets our of hand
14:26, Down 37-48

Our deficit continues to increase as we can't get going on offense, 33% FG and 13 turn overs
11:27, Down 39-54

Chris Warhank's 20 pts the only positive we had on offense. GA's offense getting contributions from almost every one, and things looking bleak for us
7:27, Down 46-66

Still not making any headway to cur our deficit, as GA has effective zeroed in defensively on SG Joe Lewis (9 pts, 3-13 FG) and SF Rashad Scott (5 pts, 2-10 FG)
3:26, Down 50-70

Had a run to cut our deficit down to 10, but not enough time.

Final Score: Alabama St - 62, Georgia - 74
SG Joe Lewis was feeling sad about his sub par performance, but if it wasn't for him, we wouldn't be where we are now. Lewis had a great college career, and so did C Marcus Moore. We simply ran against an extremely good team. Luck of the draw is part of the game

GA's starters scored 69 of their 74 pts.

  • This is Michigan's 2nd consecutive trip to the title game, but came up short again, and still is searching for their 1st title
