Game #329

Postby randy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 2:29 am

Feb 17, 2010: #18 Rice (23-3, 13-2) # Marshall (15-9, 11-4)

Tip off

Not explosive but very efficient, is how best to describe MARS' offense, as they shot 71% FG in the 1st half. We got back and took the lead by forcing turn overs. SF Andre McFadden leads all scorers with 10 pts off the bench.

Halftime, Up 43-39

Start of 2nd half

We are hanging on to our lead because of good execution of our half court sets. MARS getting a lot of offensive rebs in the 2nd half to keep the game close.
13:19, Up 53-50

We were up by 5, and then MARS offense went to full gear with a quick 15-4 run. I had to call an early timeout. We are also in the penalty
9:50, Down 59-65

SF Ross Brown trying to get us back scoring our last 9 pts, but we can't afford to simply trade baskets
4:47, Down 68-75

We get a couple of stops. PG Brent Evans gets a 3. Down 4. MARS scores on a drive. Down 6. SF Ross Brown answers with a 3. Down 3. A miss by MARS. SF ROss Brown got fouled on his drive to the basket. Both teams in penalty. Brown splits his FTs.
2:47, Down 75-77

MARS throws the ball away. SF Ross Brown gets closer. Pulls up a potential-tying jumper. No good. MARS had 2 attempts at the basket. Missed both. We finally secure the rebound. Timeout.
1:50, Down 75-77

SF Ross Brown has the ball again. Brown makes a move. Shoots. Missed, but got fouled. Brown makes both. We're tied!
1:31, Tied at 77

A foul called on us. I was complaining, but no T. 2 FTs for MARS. Split. I have 1 timeout left since I called a couple earlier in the 2nd half to stop MARS' run. I decided to play on.
1:15, Down 77-78

SF Ross Brown with the ball. Everyone expects him to take another shot. Instead he saw PG Hayletts Johnson from the left corner. Johnson just came in to the game to replace the fouled out PG Brent Evans. Johnson gets the pass. Johnson shoots, and the freshman guard scores! Timeout MARS
0:54, Up 79-78

Step back jumper by MARS' Sam Grannum. SF Ross Brown's extended arms in Grannum's face, but Grannum (16 pts) still makes the shot! Last timeout.
0:37, Down 78-79

SF Ross Brown takes the ball inside, shoots, and missed. Ball out of bounds. Last touch MARS. We have another chance. No timeouts left. SF Andre McFadden attempts a corner 3. Missed. MARS gets the rebound. We fouled quickly. 2 FTs for MARS. Split! We get the rebound. Down 2, 0:12 left. SF Ross Brown has the ball. Pass to PG Hayletts Johnson. Back to Brow with 0:02 left. Brown forced to put up a 20 footer. Missed. Game over

Final Score: Rice - 79, Marshall - 81
2 losses to MARS this season, with a combined 3 pts. We're 4-6 against MARS in 4 years since I arrived at Rice. We always have a tough time against this gritty team.

Game #330 - Bracket Breaker

Postby randy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 4:26 am

Feb 19, 2010: Niagara (18-8, 9-6) vs #17 Rice (23-4, 13-3)

Tip off

We're getting good looks against NIAG's 2-3 zone, but our shots not aflling even on close range (28% FG). We tried to put a 3-guard lineup towards the end of the 1st half, but our defense suffered. Our 11 fast break pts prevented us from being shut out on offense

Halftime, Down 26-33

Start of 2nd half

SF Ross Brown trying to ignite fire on our anemic offense with 8 pts in the 2nd half, but we haven't done much to turn this game around. We are in the penalty, while NIAG still has to commit a foul in the 2nd half; and keep letting the refs know that
11:53, Down 40-47

Our deficit stretched to 9. We made back-to back 3s, and that started a torrid 14-4 that put us in the lead momentarily. NIAG came back to reclaim the lead. I had to replace my entire team on the floor as they were exhausted in getting us back
4:15, Down 58-61

Both teams went quiet. SF Ross Brown had a FG, and NIAG with 2 more FTs. Fouls are 10-1 in the 2nd half in favor of NIAG
2:33, Down 60-63

NIAG extends the lead to 5. We miss a 3. We get a stop. After a timeout, we missed another 3. We get the offensive rebound, but we also missed the 2nd attempt. NIAG scores inside. Down 7, less than a min left. We started putting up 3s. We got one in the end, but was too late. Back-to-back losses

Game #331

Postby randy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 5:00 am

Feb 21, 2010: Southern Methodist (10-15, 5-11) @ #17 Rice (23-5, 13-3)

Tip off

C Curtis Harper is back after missing 8 games, but SF Andre McFadden is out for a week with a strained knee

It was raining 3s! We made our 1st 4 shots from downtown, and finished the 1st half shooting 9-11 3PT. SF Ross Brown, who played without relief, was on fire with 24 pts (outscoring the entire SMU team) including 6 triples. C Curtis Harper, still rusty from his long layoff, missed his 1st 3 shots but made the next 3 to finish with 6 pts.

Halftime, Up 50-22

Start of 2nd half

Our offense a reversal, as we have scored just 4 pts 8 mins into the 2nd half. But the best SMU has done was to close the gap to 21 pts. SF Ross Brown finally got his 1st rest of the game with 5 mins remaining, and our home crowd appreciating his efforts today.

Game #332

Postby randy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 11:40 am

Feb 24, 2010: #17 Rice (24-5, 14-3) @ Southern Miss (14-13, 8-9)

Tip off

We raced to an early 17-1 lead. SMISS with 12 turn overs in the 1st half, and made just 9 FGs. All 11 players I fielded in were able to score. We played close to perfect 20 mins of basketball

Halftime, Up 56-31

Start of 2nd half

I gave more time to our bench in the 2nd half. SMISS took this opportunity to mount a serious comeback. Lead down to 10. As much as possible, I want my bench players to get out of this mess. Let's see
5:44, Up 74-64

SMISS splits their FT. One play later, they made a FG. Up 7. We miss again. SMISS scores a 3! I've seen enough. Timeout. SF Ross Brown and C Curtis Harper goes back in
4:03, Up 74-70

We turned the ball over. Chance for SMISS to come closer. They miss. C Curtis Harper splits his FTs. Up 5. Another miss for SMISS. The following possession is huge if we score. SMISS with the block. And SMISS scores on their next play. Up 3. We miss again. SMISS with a chance to tie with a 3. We got called for a foul. We're in the penalty. They made both. Timeout
1:50, Up 75-74

It's been an eternity since we last made a FG. Drive by SF Ross Brown. Missed. Off rebound by PF Sam Piatowski. He puts up a shot and got fouled. Piatowski missed the 1st. Makes the 2nd.
1:25, Up 76-74

SMISS' PG Dwayne Shelton drives hard to the basket, had to take an off balanced shot. And it goes in! Shelton with 18 pts. Unbelievable turn of events
1:01, Tied at 76

We go to C Curtis Harper deep in the post. Harper is normally automatic from that spot. Harper missed! SMISS with a chance to take the lead, but they turned the ball over.
0:43, Tied at 76

I elected not to call my remaining timeout. We go to the post again, but this time to PF Sam Piatowski. He shoots. Missed. But he got the offensive rebound again. 2nd shot by Piatowski is good! Timeout SMISS
0:30, Up 78-76

SMISS' PF Cameron Lopez take a medium range jumper. Lopez makes the shot! I called my last timeout
0:20, Tied at 78

We ran the triangle, and isolate C Curtis Harper on the post. Harper with the baby hook. Harper scores! Timeout SMISS
0:11, Up 80-78

SMISS's SF David Bailey drives. Bailey met by a double team inside the paint. Bailey forced a pass to C Alfred Smith. We rotated quickly. Time running out. Smith got confused and gave a kickout pass. End of game. SMISS not able to put up a shot. Great team defense in that play. But nothing great throwing away a 28 pt lead which we had earlier in the 2nd half

Final Score: Rice - 80, Southern Miss - 78
We got outscored 47-24 in the 2nd half. From a near perfect 1st half, to almost in the wrong end of one of biggest comebacks in NCAA history

Game #333 - 2010 CUSA Tournament

Postby randy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 1:03 pm

Mar 7, 2010: (9) Houston (16-15, 6-12) vs (1) #16 Rice (25-5, 15-3)

Tip off

SF Ross Brown named as Norton finalist for the 2nd straight year.

SF Andre McFadden is back after missing our last 2 games. We split the season series with HOU. They are a dangerous team despite their record.

We are shooting the ball slightly better, winning the battle of the boards, and is +13 in fast break pts. And yet we found ourselves trailing at the break. Biggest difference so far is HOU going to the line 17 times (making 14), while we only had 2 FT attempts.

Halftime, Down 39-41
Majority of our pts (21) were from transition. We need to keep running, as shots are not falling on our half court sets

Start of 2nd half

I had to bring in SF Andre McFadden (9 pts in the 1st half) early in the 2nd half to help out on our half court offense. Our defense better at the start of the 2nd half, as we go on a 14-2 run. HOU eventually started making shots, but we were able to answer back any small run they make
9:50, Up 60-50

We know HOU will keep scoring so we have to keep the pressure on offense also. SF Andre McFadden continues his good game, with 13 of his 22 pts scored in the 2nd half. I will give McFadden a short rest before the final stretch
5:15, Up 70-58

HOU makes a 3 and get to within single digits of our lead. But before could jump start a rally, SF Ross Brown answers back with a 3 also. A series of stops made by both teams, but more importantly clock is running down. Until C Curtis Harper scores on a put back
2:11, Up 75-61

We can't relax as crazier things can happen. HOU scores another 3. And then HOU with a steal and they score on the break. Lead down to 9. But SF Andre McFadden dousing off HOU's momentum with a dagger 3. Up 12 with just over 1 min remaining. We started slowing the game, and held on.

Final Score: Houston - 68, Rice - 80
What a comeback game for SF Andre McFadden. A great all-around performance by C Curtis Harper. I inserted PG Brent Evans to the starting lineup, and he did a fine job handling the ball - just 1 turn over in 26 mins

PF Kevin Tiggs out for a week with a shoulder injury

Game #334 - 2010 CUSA Tournament Semifinals

Postby randy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 1:50 pm

Mar 8, 2010: (5) Alabama-Birmingham (15-14, 10-8) vs (1) #16 Rice (26-5, 15-3)

Tip off

Both teams struggling to make shots at the beginning of the game; more than 4 minutes have passed, and the score was still tied at 2. Our bench gave some life to our offense. When PF Sam Piatowski returned to the floor, he score 6 straight pts, and he leads our 1st half scoring with 8. We also started forcing UAB to commit lots of turn overs (15). As a results, we had more possessions and shots at the basket, and eventually some of those shots started falling

Halftime, Up 35-23

Start of 2nd half

SF Ross Brown scored our 1st 13 pts of the 2nd half; he suddenly now has 20 pts. UAB's offense also starting to click to keep themselves within striking distance
11:54, Up 55-40

I had the opportunity to rest some of our key players like SF Ross Brown because of our lead. Fortunately, our bench did a good job in defense, and even extended our lead.
6:29, Up 59-40

We were still leading by 21 with under 3 mins remaining. I didn't bother to return my starters.

Game #335 - 2010 CUSA Tournament Finals

Postby randy » Sun Jan 04, 2015 1:39 am

Mar 9, 2010: (2) #3 Memphis (26-6, 15-3) vs (1) #16 Rice (27-5, 15-3)

Tip off

We are 4-0 against MEM in our last 4 meetings, including the last 2 CUSA Tournament Finals

This is a game that doesn't lack star power, featuring 4 former All Americans, and the stars have come out to play. MEM has PG Ryan Watson (16 pts, 5 3s) and SF Brian Perry (7 pts). On our side, we have SF Ross Brown (16 pts, 4 s) and C Curtis Harper (9 pts 7 rebs). However, the difference in the 1st half is the supporting cast, and we had the advantage led by SF Andre McFadden's 10 pts off the bench. MEM with 10 turn overs in the 1st half.

Halftime, Up 47-36

Start of 2nd half

C Curtis Harper (19 pts) scored 5 inside baskets already in the 2nd half, keeping the pressure on MEM. But MEM's other guard, SG David Wolff has come alive in the 2nd half, scoring 10 of his 16 pts.
13:29, Up 60-49

We scored 2 staright transition baskets, but MEM coming back with a 7-0 run. I dont want to take chances, and called an early timeout
9:15, Up 64-56

We clamped down on defense, and forced more turn overs on MEM (20). C Curtis Harper, who has played without relief, scored 4 pts on an 8-3 run and we go up by 13. SF Brian Perry is scoreless so far in the 2nd half.
3:23, Up 72-59

We got called for 4 straight fouls on MEM's next possession, and we got to the penalty. I was furious with the refs. MEM splits. Up 12. We missed on our next nest possession. And then MEM's PG Ryan Watson (25 pts) drains a 3. Timeout
1:58, Up 72-63

SF Andre McFadden missed an open shot. MEM has the ball. MEM's PG Ryan Watson cant get a shot because of a double team. They pass the ball. We stole the ball. McFadden from the same spot. This time he drains it!
1:16, Up 74-63

I instructed the team to slow down, and we held on for the win. 3-peat CUSA Champions!

Final Score: Memphis - 67, Rice - 76
We had a shortened rotation today; C Curtis Harper played 40 mins, and SF Ross Brown 39 mins

Tip off

It is always a dangerous match up when we face good outside shooting teams. And today was no different, as VER has been consistent on the perimeter the entire 1st half. After we trailed 4-9 early, it has been a tight contest, with no team leading by more than 3 pts. There were 17 lead changes and ties. VER's SG Eric Thomas with 12 pts. C Curtis Harper and SF Ross Brown played the entire 1st half, finishing with 13 and 11 pts respectively

Halftime, Up 38-37
VER only 2 turn overs in the 1st half. We need to improve on this.

Start of 2nd half

C Curtis Harper with 8 quick pts in the 2nd half, as our offense was in full swing after the break.
11:03, Up 58-50

I was able to sneak in a very brief rest for C Curtis Harper and SF Ross Brown earlier, but not for long as this VER team can put up pts in a hurry.
7:16, Up 67-59

VER's 7 turn overs in the 2nd half (they only had 2 during the 1st) slowed them down a bit.
3:45, Up 74-64

We couldn't advance our score because of some sloppy plays. Timeout. Both teams in the penalty
1:39, Up 75-68

We went with our money man, C Curtis Harper, and he delivers once again with another inside shot. Harper with 12-15 FG, 25 pts.
1:24, Up 77-68

A missed 3 by VER. C Curtis Harper gets his 10th rebound. SF ROss Brown converts a running shot plus a foul. Up 12, less than 1 minute. Safe lead now. We slowed down the game

Final Score: Vermont - 70, Rice - 84
Game was far from easy. We needed solid performances from 4 players (scoring 81 out of 84 pts) to hack out this win

Game #337 - 2010 NCAA Tournament Round of 32

Postby randy » Sun Jan 04, 2015 5:39 am

Mar 18, 2010: (5) #12 Rice (29-5, 15-3) vs (13) Air Force (21-11, 10-6)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. Fr SF Shaun Phillips (16.6 ppg, 40% 3PT)
    2. Sr SF Erik Kresse (10.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 2nd MWC; Champion MWC Tournament
    2. (Rd 64) Def #7 Pepperdine, 76-70 (Phillips 23 pts, Kresse 20 pts)
  • Strengths
    1. Defense: 42.6% opp FG, 15.8 opp topg (both #1 MWC)
  • Weaknesses
    1. Shooting: 44.4% FG
    2. AF with 2 consecutive wins against ranked teams, including #23 UNLV in the MWC Tournament Finals. Solid defense, with decent offense by their wings. We need to shut down either Phillips of Kresse, or possibly both

Tip off

AFA mized some 2-3 zone early, but SG Jimmy Young made them pay with 2 quick 3s. C Curtis Harper explited his size mismatch, finishing with 16 pts and 7 rebs. SF Andre McFadden with 14 pts off the bench. We were clearly the better defensive team; AFA shot just 36% FG and committing 9 turn overs.

Halftime, Up 49-28

Start of 2nd half

We started the 2nd half with a 10-0 run to lead by 31 pts. C Curtis Harper added 8 more pts, and it's clear that AFA does not have the answer to stop our offense. Game was virtually a done deal with more than 13 mins remaining. Short work for our key players.

We advance to the Sweet 16 for the 1st time in school history!

Final Score: Rice - 90, Air Force - 57
