Using Location as Recruiting Pitch

Using Location as Recruiting Pitch

Postby novafan14 » Mon Mar 12, 2018 1:53 pm

I'm assuming pitching location to a recruit should only work for in-state or bordering state players but just as a test, I was able to use location as the recruiting pitch to a recruit in Texas when I made a home visit (I'm coach at Stony Brook in NY) and got feedback that the visit went well (location was the most important factor for this recruit). I guess there could be other factors involved that led to the visit going well? I would have thought i would have gotten bad feedback from the home visit using the location pitch. I think I was able to do this on past years games as well. Has anyone else seen this?

Maybe he has a girlfriend going to Stony Brook. :D

But...a recruit (and his family) can like you and your school even if you pitch the wrong thing. Obviously, it's best to try to pitch something that is highly important to the guy (and his family), but doing the opposite isn't necessarily going to result in a the guy telling you to f off).

Other things being equal, if a guy from nearby has rated Location as important, I will offer to him over another guy who hasn't. With recruits from far away, just the opposite. I will offer to one of those who has recruiting as a low priority, over one who has it as high.

That does seem silly that you received good feedback on your visit.

As for when to use location, I have found it works as long as your school and the recruits state are in the same region so it doesn’t necessarily have to be in state or neighboring state.

For example, coaching Delaware, I could use location for anyone in the Atlantic East region from PA to Maine.

Just a thought about why this pitch may have worked. It's possible that NOT being close to home is important to this player. All you know is that location is important, but it stands to reason that it could be any location, not just the school in the home town.

Or it could be a glitch

That is entirely possible. That was something that popped up from time to time in either the NCAA Football series or the 2k basketball series (I can't remember which) --- guys would consider your school primarily if it WASN'T close to home.

If so, that's a cool feature to include.

Yeah, I think it's good to have some variability in how things work in the game. Recruiting approaches (and also relationship approaches) shouldn't work exactly the same each time...just as happens in real life.

You can have a good visit for a number of reasons - the recruit may like your school, he may like you as a coach, he may like the fact that you acknowledged that location was important to him (ie you pitched a category of importance) - you can still pitch your school's location as a means of swaying the recruit. He might still not want to come to your school because its not close to home but that doesn't mean you can't pitch your location and try to talk him out of wanting to stay close to home. An important part of the pitch categories is that it is a subject of interest to the recruit (or his parents) - if you choose a pitch category the recruit has no interest in talking about then you're more likely to have a bad meeting.

Is it still true that there's no point repeating a pitch once that pitch has been made?
