John Havlicek

John Havlicek

It was a LONG time ago. Red Auerbach, the coach of the Boston Celtics, didn't start Havlicek, one of his very best players. He felt like John gave the team a huge spark coming in off the bench, and John played starters minutes, and was always in at the end of close games.

I have found that, particularly at Small Forward, this strategy works in this game. If a sub was doing really well I will usually start him over a starter who is not doing well. And that mostly works. BUT... at SF, if I put the guy in his stats fall to the level of the guy who was in before, and often the guy who is now coming off the bench starts to do better. Just for the record, John Havlicek played Small Forward and some Shooting Guard.

Hm...

It IS nice when you've got a good scoring guy who can come in off the bench when the other team has a lot of non-starters on the floor or when the other team has players on the floor with low EN's. That guy can often put a lot of points on the board.

i agree..a true sf is the hardest part of the puzzle to get in this game...if you've got two..and can afford to bring one in off the bench...you are probably going to have a fantastic season

Coach, I keep forgetting that your personal familiarity with Boston is not Celtic green or parquet flooring but Sam Adams...and I'm not talking about the beer but the real guy who you most probably knew.

and as for John Havlicek...maybe the only 6th man in the NBA worth a comparison was Michael Cooper on those great Laker teams in the early 80's with magic and kareem
