REQUEST-Add Overtime Format that Allows Ties

REQUEST-Add Overtime Format that Allows Ties

Postby regenerator » Sat Feb 01, 2020 3:01 am

I'm surprised i Havent seen this from anyone, but it seems to me that of the several OT formats available in the league creation screen, nowhere can you find the ACTUAL OVERTIME RULES! It would seem to be a combination of the Modified Sudden Death and An Extra Quarter.
If I am not completely crazy, the modern NFL rules allow for ties, and have that modified sudden death where a TD ends the game immediately but a FG let the other team possess the ball once more and they must score or lose.
The only OT format we have as an option in the game that allows for a tie is to have an entire extra quarter.

So yes, I humbly request to add in "Modified Sudden Death(allows ties)" as a form of selectable OT.

This was discussed in the past, but I think at the time people (including myself) was thinking it was only a bad description in the rule selection screen versus not working correctly. See posts here.

However, after looking at some recent OT results using the "Extra Quarter" option, the rules do not match current NFL rules in a couple of ways as demonstrated by the gamelog below. Unfortunately none of the other OT options are usable since none of them can result in a tie, which is unlike the NFL.

1) OT periods are only 10 minutes, but within the game they are 15 minutes
2) After this team scored a FG, the other team should have had a chance to score a FG or TD themselves. But that didn't happen, game over after the FG.

Extra quarter is basically sudden death for one quarter and then if the quarter ends with no score it ends in a tie.
Modified sudden death is the modern one where teams both have a chance to score.
Sudden Death means they keep playing until a team scores.

I will fix it so that Modified Sudden Death allows ties... it should only be going one more quarter.

If "Modified sudden death" equals the modern rules, then it shouldn't say "No Ties" - in the modern rules it very much is possible to have a tie...

Could we please also have an option added to where both teams get to possess the ball that doesn't have ties? Maybe give us the college format to use in this game?

Agreed, I updated it for the patch.

Maybe in a future version if we get a lot of interest.

I think it would be cool to have this feature, one more neat little extra that most games don't have...however, only if it is a very quick job to code...def don't want it taking away from much higher priority areas...

So what happens with the modified overtime during playoff games? I'm assuming those games don't end in ties, correct? Couldn't we just have an option to use that same format during regular season games? Having the college format added as an option would be nice, but what I'm really looking for is both teams getting at least one possession (no sudden death) and no ties. Do we already have a format option that has this?

The modified sudden death was built to mirror the current NFL where you have one quarter of both teams needing possession. Somewhere along the way it got updated to no-ties, which isn't how the NFL works, so in the next patch I've fixed it to allow ties.

For playoffs it was left untouched since no-ties is what you want there.

If there is enough interest in adding a modified sudden death with unlimited quarters and no ties, we can look at adding that in a future version.
