Sudden Drop In Rookie Ability

Sudden Drop In Rookie Ability

Postby peterk1 » Wed Dec 30, 2020 3:10 pm

Just wondering if someone can explain what might have happened to one of my players.

I drafted a rookie QB with my #1 pick (#10 pick overall). His OVR post-draft was 77 and I was super happy with that. I can work with it in a rebuild attempt.

We went through training and he neither moved up or down.

I simmed the 4 pre-season games and watched them. He was #1 on the depth charts and didn't play very much. I did notice that he was putting up a lot of 0/4's and 0/5's in the quarters he was playing and I was a bit concerned.

We get to the first game of the season and he plays absolutely horribly. Something like 3 completions for 30 attempts. It was then that I noticed that his OVR had dropped to 70. It's not due to injuries. If I check his ratings progression graphs, there's really no movement on anything.

Is it normal for rookie OVR's to just drop 10% like that without warning and without it being logged anywhere? I'm also not sure why his completion rate is so horrible - he has Arm Strength and Accuracy around 80. Overall strength is low, but all other attributes are good.

Quick simmed a whole season with him as my #1 just to see what would happen and it was a total disaster - 4-12 finish. Rarely played better than that 3/30 in game #1 and ratings never got better.

My guess is the playbook does not work to his strengths? Also what's his team like around him? Could be he has poor receivers and a poor o line.

In terms of preseason did you have it set to play the bench? That would explain why he didn't play there.

For TC it is normal. Not all players get a boost during training camp. But the drop in overall is hard to know if his ratings did not decline at all did you cross check and see any declines?

Bad in-season training maybe? I imagine his position skill tanked?

Not really. The other two QBs on the staff do well with only slightly higher OVR. Playbook contains basic passes with 4 decent receivers 75-80+.

That's the thing though....the training reports reported no drop and the skill progressions aren't showing anything dramatic.
It was just a normal training setup - 5's everywhere with 2 extra points added in.

Yes, His QB position skill is way down in the 30's now. I have no idea what it was when I drafted him.

Skill drop explains the overall drop. Position skill has more of an impact on overall rating in ddspf21

They're normal but not spectacular. They can get 50% completion percentages.

This is my rookie's first game. The 70 who should be a 77. If you ask me, even a 70 should play better than this.

Code: Select all
Passing
Cp/At   Pct   Yds   Avg   TD   Int   Sacks   Rat
Mcmullen, M.      3/27 11.1%    27     1    0     0    4-32   39.6

That's fine. The problem is that I have no idea why or when it happened. If it's a bug or if it was normally part of the game.

I have an Excel file that I use to keep track of my players, their ratings, their salaries, etc. This is the first time in 4 seasons that I've seen a player's ratings just self-destruct for no reason.

It's a big deal because 1st round draft picks get huge 5+ year contracts and if they're garbage like this with no hope they can really cripple the team for a long time. This guy is probably untradable.

He's now been dropped to #3 on the depth charts even though the coach and offensive co-ordinator still want him at #1.
There's another young player, a WR who is rated 68, which the coaches also want to start even though I have a way better player available. I'm letting that one slide because that 68 WR has good hands and can at least catch! I like the 68 WR!

Won 2nd game of the season using older backup QB as starter and off to a nice 2-0 start.
Managing what to do with this bust of a #1 draft pick QB will be a nice challenge.
