3/11: #1 seed, #1 ranked Michigan ST, 30-2, 18-2, in the title game. They won by 18 there, then we won by 10 at home. They're heavily favored. They do everything well.

Game time: Close early. Down 7 after 10. Then they go on a run. 30-50 at halftime. We just can't stop their attack. I've changed up a couple of things but nothing worked in the 1st half. Both of our starting guards have 3 fouls. The refs aren't helping, -12 from the line.
Down 19 with 10 to play. It's not happening.

67-83. We were outclassed tonight.

3/12: #2 East. We face #15 East Tennessee ST, 17-15. This should not be a problem.

3/16: They're staying with us early on. Up only 3 after 10. 37-36 at the half. I'm pretty upset with my team. We look awful. It gets a little heated in the locker room. Down 7 with 10 to play. Back and forth late. OT!

93-88 in OT. We were down 6 with 59 seconds left in regulation and were lucky to tie it up. 20, 5 for Laky, 19 for Fine, 12, 11, 3 for Brin.
+20 in the paint, +12 TOs. But they shot 50%, and simply didn't play well. We need to improve or we won't be playing for much longer!

3/17: #10 seed West Virginia, 20-12, in the 2nd round. They beat us by 13 there in September, mostly with their bench play and guard play. Their guards are very good and we'll need to contain them. Our bench should be better than theirs but it wasn't last time we met.

3/18: We come out flat again. Down 3 after 10. 42-48. We're simply not playing D so far in the tournament; they're shooting 57.6%. 11, 7 for Laky but no one else is doing much. Up 6 with 10 left.

88-81 but I am not happy with the way we're playing, especially on D. They shot 51.7%. Fine fouled out. 20, 7 for laky. +20 in the paint.

I've been thinking about everything I've seen on this near 40 year journey through the galaxy. It doesn't seem like there could be much that we haven't seen but I know that that is not true given how fast the galaxy is. It will be interesting to see what else we discover!

3/22: #3 seed, #16 ranked Cincinnati, 26-8, in the Sweet Sixteen. They're favored. They're especially good outside. We think if we can wake up and actually play our game we can beat them. Let's see what happens.

3/23: Back and forth and then they take the lead. Tied after 10. They go on a run. 28-40 at the break. They're shooting 53.6%, we're shooting 25.8%. End of the line if we don't wake up. We're chipping away, down 5 with 10 to play. Tied with 5 left.

69-67. Moe Fine hit a three off a pick with 5.6 left and they couldn't get a good shot off, as we actually played good D! 18, 3, 4, 4 for Fine, 11, 11 for Brin. We were very good in the 2nd half, the best we've played in the post season.

3/24: It's a rematch with #1 seed, #1 ranked Michigan ST, in the Elite 8. They thumped us last time, and have won 2 of the 3 we've played.

We'll need to be at our absolute best and hope they aren't.

3/25: I go to max D early but they're up 20 after 10. We rally, down 37-43 at the half. 16 for Fine. They go on a huge run, down 29 with 10 to go.

78-104. Again tonight they were just too good for us. 23, 7 for Fine.

Not sure I'll stay here next year.

4/3: #4 Alabama wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Art Laky and Mike Brin make the Big 10 2nd team. I feel like Moe Fine was our best player and he was ignored. I get Conf. COY.

4/9: TP goes from 75 to 81.

I would take the right offer. We don't have the resources here to get to a championship.

Michigan ST's coach retired and they want me. EASY call. I'm there!

Only one starter and one good sub coming back so it's a rebuilding project but they have the resources to make it happen. Terrific recruiting class!

4/23: I ask for a budget increase.

We get $20,000!

29-9, Elite 8 at Iowa. For 38 seasons I'm 1212- 240, .835. Winningest coach in Div. I history.

5/1: Preseason #2. #1 recruiting class.

We lose a C. He would have started.

5/29: Round 1: No offers.

Round 2: We offer to a C, rated a B level player. Got him.

6/25: We're going to the Indy Camp but that's it.

6/26: 2 scholarships. We want a guard and a big man.

We're heading for another solar system. Two planets in the Goldilocks zone, one moon.

8/7: SG Joe Moss is #2 on the Norton list, C/F Jev Casp is #17, F Ben Wite #23, C/F Rod Ansa #31.

8/21: We offer to a PG and a C, and both have us at #1 right now.

The probe is showing signs of sophisticated life on both the moon and the two planets.

9/18: Lost both. We offer to 2 others.

Coaches Classic vs. Princeton. Challenging schedule!

9/25: We get a PG, #13, lose one.

10/2: We lose another one.

1st day of practice. We have lots of talent. Not sure about our D.

10/9: We get a PF, #29.

11/11: Here's the lineup: Frosh Don Hale is at the Point.

Frosh Joe Moss, probably our best player, is at SG.

#3 guard is frosh Neil Cass. #4 is frosh Gil Davi, and #5 is senior Jay Wrig, who never developed.

Another frosh, Ben Wite, is at SF. He does a lot of things well.

Soph Rod Ansa, a transfer from Texas, is at PF. He's our best defender.

Junior Jev Casp, is in his 3rd year as a starter at C. Great rebounder, poor defender.

#1 big off the bench is frosh Josh Brad, he is a real glass eater. #2 is senior Scot Wear, who has never played much. Cris Wigg, a junior, never developed. Jay Town, a frosh, isn't ready.

11/12: On to the Coaches Classic vs. Princeton, a team we should beat. We're the #1 seed, they're #16.

11/13: We take an immediate lead. Up 8 after 10. They come back. 53-54 at the half; we're playing ridiculously poor D, and I do some screaming about it in the locker room. 2 of our starters have 3 fouls. 12 each for SG Joe Moss and PF Rod Ansa, but they're shooting 60.7%! Up 1 with 10 to play after a mini-run but they're still shooting too well.

88-73 but it certainly took awhile! 23, 4, 11, 4 for Moss, 16, 9 for Ansa. +14 in the paint. We need to play better than this.

We arrive at the farthest habitable planet in this solar system. It is not the one with the moon. The probe we send down shows a devastated landscape. It appears that there was a sophisticated society here, but it is gone. Clearly, climate issues were the reason. It shows every sign of a civilization that polluted itself to death.

There is no need to send humans down, at least at present. The robots will explore without needing breathable air, which does not exist.

They will look to get details about the society that was here.11/14: #9 seed Louisiana Tech in the quarter finals. They have a good C but they turned it over 22 times in their first game.

11/15: We take the lead quickly. Up 15 after 10; we're playing much better tonight so far. 38-13 at the half; incredible D! They are 5-24. Up 18 with 10 to go.

68-47. The outcome was never in doubt but we sort of fell asleep in the 2nd half.

11, 14 for C Jay Casp, 7, 0, 12 for PG Don Hale. They shot 30%. +20 in the paint.

The robots are finding signs of a very sophisticated civilization here- they had very efficient transportation, but mostly individual vehicles that polluted. There was lots of manufacturing, which also led to pollution.

We decide to move in to look at the other planet and its moon.

11/16: In the semifinals we play our first talented team, #5 seed Cincinnati. We are a huge favorite. They are much stronger outside than inside, but they have trouble scoring. They play good D though.

11/17: We lead early. Up 11 after 10. 40-26 at halftime. 13 for Moss. Up 12 with 10 to play.

69-54. A comfortable win but again tonight we were too comfortable in the 2nd half, no edge. 15, 10, 5, 4 blocks for Casp, 19, 5, 4, 3 for Moss, 15, 6, 3, 4 for Ansa. Strong inside play.
