Way Back When

2/19: 66-80 at Wisconsin. They're always tough at home; we never led. 21, 8, 3, 3 for Burr, 15 for Hask. They controlled the inside.

A close 67-60 win over #6 Texas at home. They led by 14 at the half and we really had to work hard to turn it around. 20, 11 for Norv. +10 from the foul line.

A frustrating 72-73 loss at #3 West Virginia. We threw away a 14 point lead and missed a 12 footer in the final seconds. 18, 15, 1, 4, 5 for Burr, 12, 8, 4 for Hopp.

An easy 70-45 win at Alabama, which we needed! 22, 3, 5 for Hopp, 18, 4 for Norv.

This team isn't as strong inside as I like my teams to be.

21-4, 8-4, tied for 5th place in Conf. A. #5, NET #3.

There is a story that a child was sent through the mail, 73 miles. I am not certain as to whether or not to believe it.

Lucy and I went to Hartford to see a “motion picture.” It was flickery and difficult to follow. If this new form of entertainment is to succeed it must make great improvements. It was interesting, of course.

The telephone is becoming more popular. Many people, all across the country, now have “four party lines” installed in their homes. This makes recruiting easier!

3/5: 82-53 over #12 Arizona here. We broke it open in the second half, 39-17. 22, 20 for Burr. 56 Rebounds! Only 8 turnovers.

91-74 over Purdue here in Storrs. 54-23 at the half. 18, 12 for Burr, 10, 4, 13 for Poga. We dominated inside.

First big man off the bench Pat Ollo broke his wrist. Out for the season. Nick Deon moves up in the rotation.

76-60 at Marquette. We led all the way. 13, 29, 5, 3 blocks for Burr- 29 rebounds! We controlled the inside.

We end regular season play with a close 70-64 win over #9 Duke on campus. We led all the way, by as many as 16, but they got close several times late in the game. 15, 14, 3, 3 for Burr, 21, 3, 4, 3 for Poga.

We ended the regular season strong but still finished tied for 4th place. 25-4, 12-4. #4, NET #2. We feel we can make a strong run in the post season if we continue to play as we are playing now.

Jeb Burr is #6 on the Norton list.

+16 PPG, +7.5 RBs, -6.3 TOs, 12.2. +6.2 assists.

Burr leads us in points and rebounds with 15.0, 13.1. Poga gets 6.7 assists.

There is great conflict in Europe, especially between England and Germany. Many fear that war is imminent.

3/8: We play #12 seed, #24 ranked iowa, 18-11, in the play in round. We beat them by 28 at home. They can score outside but we should win this game.

3/9: We take an early lead. 39-22 at the half; we seem to be in control.

76-67. The final score was as close as they got. 27 for Poga, 22, 12, 2, 5 for Burr. 10 turnovers to 28.

3/10: We play #5 seed, #9 ranked Duke, 19-8, in the quarter finals. We won by 6 at home least week. They are favored but I think this is a toss up.

Game time: Slow paced in the early going. Down 1 after 10. We heat up. 40-32 at halftime. 3 fouls for Norv, and 3 for their PF. Up only 4 with 10 to play.

86-67. We were strong late in the game. 24, 6 for Burr, 15, 2, 7, 4, 4 blocks for Poga.

Europe is a powder keg more and more every day. Here in the U. S. everyone is saying that if they get into a war over there the best thing we can do is to stay completely out of it. I agree!

3/11: #1 seed, #1 ranked Kansas, 29-2, 14-2, in the semifinals. We beat them by 13 at home in our only meeting, but they are a big favorite. They do everything well so we'll need to play our best game to have a chance.

Game time: They take the lead right away. Down 15 after 10. 25-39 at the half. Not good! We're 7-32, 1-10 on threes. 3 fouls for Hopp.

Down 19 with 10 left and we're in big trouble. Not making shots.

59-86. We couldn't compete with them tonight. 15, 11 for Burr bot no one else did much of anything. We shot 24.2%, 2-17 on threes.

3/12: #1 Midwest. We play #16 Wagner, 15-15. This is a game we should win.

3/16: We score the first 14. Up 14 after 10. 46-32 at the half. 12, 5 for Hopp. Norv has 3 fouls again. Up 11 with 10 to go.

84-63. They made a run early in the second half but we answered and then some. 17, 7, 4 for Hopp, 4 more with 10 or more. 9 turnovers to 26, +22 in the paint.

Wedding plans are proceeding nicely. Lucy travels to Greenwich to her parents house regularly on the weekend to continue the planning.
The wedding will take place there.

3/17: #8 seed Oklahoma, 18-12, in the second round. We are a big favorite. They have difficulty scoring points, and they turn the ball over.

3/18: They start fast but we come back. Down 5 after 10. 30-37 at halftime; we're not playing well and not hitting shots. Shooting 32.5% to 56%. Down 6 with 10 to go; time is running out! Tied with 4 to go.

67-69 and a very early exit. Disappointing. It was tied 4 times late but we missed a last second 14 footer. 21, 5, 4, 7 for Hopp.

We're losing almost everyone to graduation. It might be a good time to go to that low conference school and try to build them up. We'll see what offers we get.

4/3: #1 Kansas wins the title.

4/4: Awards: Jeb Burr is a first team All American. In Conf. A Burr is first team.

4/9: Going all the way down to the lowest conference, Conf. V, to Central Connecticut; they were 3-24 this season so nowhere to go but up! It's closer to Lucy's family, and I want a different kind of challenge.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade.

No.

28-6 in my last season at UConn. Total for my 13 year career: 364-73, .833.

Toronto wins the Stanley Cup.

5/1: Recruiting class #320. Ouch!

We get dropped to Independent. Can't get any lower!

Only 6 roster players. Only 1 guard.

5/14: A day to honor mothers is proclaimed by Pres. Wilson.

5/29: 2 leave. We now have 1 guard, 3 bigs. 9 spots to fill.

Round 1: We offer to a bunch of Cs, 2 Ds. 0-9.

Round 2: We get 7, 4 guards, 3 bigs. 4 Cs, 3 Ds. 2 to go.

Round 3: We get 2 Ds.

6/4: I am a married man! Lucy and I bought a three bedroom home in New Britain, not far from campus. After a train trip to Cape Cod, where we stayed for a few days, we are in our new home!

6/9: Honus Wagner is the first modern player to get 3000 hits.

6/25: We go to the Big Apple camp.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We want 1 guard, 2 bigs.

6/28: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is assassinated along with his wife. This surely means war.

7/11: Talk of war is rampant throughout Europe as nations make preparations for war.

7/28: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia and so it begins.

7/29: Telephone lines are linked from New York to San Francisco making nationwide telephone calls a reality. This should prove to be a great boon to business!

7/31: We're not getting very far with recruits.

Russia and Germany are engaging in war talk against each other.

8/1: Germany declares war on Russia. France mobilizes its military.

8/3: Germany declares war on France.

British Foreign Secretary Edward Grey famously remarks "The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our time."

8/4: The U. S. declares neutrality in the European war.

8/15: War is raging throughout most of Europe.

The Panama Canal opens.

8/18: Pres. Wilson again proclaims U. S. neutrality in the war.

8/21: We offer to a PG, a PF, and a C. None are very enthused about coming here. If we have any luck before Spring recruiting I'll be surprised.

Japan enters the war, against Germany. The war is now being called a World War. There is fighting in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and it is spreading. Thus far there is no fighting in North or South America.

8/25: Lucy and I are adjusting to married life very smoothly. We have our minor disagreements but all in all this is going very well!

9/1: The last known passenger pigeon dies.

9/6: Battle of the Marne, a major battle. The war is raging. Neither side seems to have an advantage and so many are being killed, both soldiers and non-combatants.

9/18: We get a PG, #196. Lose a big man.

We put together a weak pre-conference schedule. Wins draw interest from recruits. One tough game, against Memphis.

It appears that, because we are an independent, we have only a 16 game schedule. No conference games to play...

9/25: We lose one.

9/27: Nap Lajoie collects his 3000th hit.

9/29: The “Miracle Braves,” who were in last place in mid-July, clinch the National League pennant.

10/2: We get a PF, #169. We lose one.

First day of practice and every position is up for grabs. We will play everyone about equally during practice, and in our two exhibition games.

10/3: 25,000 Canadian troops depart to fight in Europe on the side of England and France.

10/13: The “Miracle Braves” win the World Series in 4 straight.

10/19: Battle of Ypres. Another carnage that resolves nothing.

11/12: My lineup:

Soph Jam Hart is at PG. He's a transfer from Iowa. We're hoping his experience there, a much better school than ours, will be helpful.

Soph Kent Webb is at SG. He is also a transfer from Iowa, and he's our best guard.

#3 guard is senior Erik Rama, from Duke. He is decent. #4 is soph Jay Wink, who started at Central Michigan last season. Last guard is soph Tip Rice, also from Iowa.

At SF is senior Shay Grif, who started at Illinois for the last three years. We have high expectations for him.

PF is soph Tod Woma, who transferred from Xavier.

At C is junior Greg Mina, who subbed for us last season.

1st big man off the bench will get equal time with the three big men for now. Junior Jon Beck was at LSU last season and he can play.

2nd is soph Drew Weal, from Wisconsin. Next is junior Jam Odle, who subbed for us last year. Finally comes Erik Camm, a senior who has never developed.
