3/17: #3 seed, #10 ranked Duke, 20-13, in the 2nd round. This is not quite the typical Duke team but they are very good nonetheless. They are heavily favored. We score 8 ½ more per game but they have played a MUCH tougher schedule.

3/18: Back and forth early. Up 4 after 10. 30-33 at the half; it's a battle! Their C has 3 fouls and 10 points. Both teams are shooting poorly. They get the lead to double digits early in the 2nd then take off. We're down 18 with 10 to play.

66-82. They were too good, especially inside, -18 in the paint. 19, 8 for Beck.

3/30: Montreal Canadians win the Stanley Cup.

4/3: #7 West Virginia is the champ.

4/4: Awards: Kent Webb is Conf. V Def. POY. Greg Mina makes the first team. I get Conf. COY.

4/9: I'm not looking to move.

4/24: Easter Uprising in Ireland.

The Germans continue to use poison gas extensively.

4/30: I ask for money.

We get $7,000.

28-4, Conf. champions, 2nd round of the NCAA tournament. Overall for 15 seasons I am 404-82, .831.

We're losing starters Beck and Mina, and sub Woma.

I think we'll jump to Conf. R.

5/1: We move to Conf. R. Recruit class #43.

5/14: Elmer's first birthday. He is walking and says several words.

5/16: In continuing efforts to turn most Latin American countries into “banana republics” the U. S. invades the Dominican Republic.

5/17: Daylight Savings time is introduced in England.

5/29: We lose a guard who would not have played. We have two roster spots open and we want 2 big men.

Round 1: We offer to a B. No.

Round 2: We offer to an A who has us in his Top 5, and a C. We get the A! He will start.

Round 3: We offer to a B. We get him and he will start. Huge improvement to the team with these 2 transfers!

6/15: Woodrow Wilson nominated for a second term. His campaign slogan is, “He kept us out of war.”

6/24: Actress Mary Pickford signs a one million dollar contract, making her one of the world's highest paid people.

6/25: No money for camps.

6/26: 7 scholarships. Yikes! We need 4 guards but clearly we probably won't fill 7 scholarships. We'll probably need to rely on next season's transfer pool.

6/30: Battle of the Somme begins as the war drags on.

U. S. Congress passes a bill to expand the military.

7/3: Charlie Chaplin signs with Mutual for $10,000 per week.

7/9: Caruso releases a recording of “O Sole Mio.” Lucy and I buy it as soon as it comes to town.

8/7: I am shocked to have 2 players nominated for the Norton Award: Center Ike Gard is #33, and PF Marq Qual is #38.

8/21: We offer to 4 bigs and 3 PGs but we need 4 guards. Oh well, if we get 2-3 of these 7 we'll be lucky.

8/25: The National Park Service is created.

8/27: U. S. Naval Reserve is created.

9/1: Child labor is banned from interstate commerce.

9/18: We get 3, lose 3. We get 2 PGs and a C. C- #81, one PG #133, the other #210.

We're in the Coaches Classic vs. Oregon. A more challenging schedule this year.

9/20: The first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, opens.

9/25: We get our 3rd PG, #138. Lose 2.

9/30: John D. Rockefeller becomes the world's first known billionaire.

10/2: We get one, lose one. We get a C, #70.

1st day of practice. This is a very good looking team for Conf. R. We should do well.

10/7: Georgia Tech beats Cumberland College 222-0 in football.

10/12: The Boston Red Sox win the World Series.

10/16: Margaret Sanger opens the first birth control clinic in the U. S.

10/26: Margaret Sanger is arrested for obscenity due to opening the birth control clinic.

11/11: Here's the lineup:

Senior Jam Hart is back at the Point, looking better than ever.

Senior Kent Webb is back at SG.

#3 guard is senior Jay Wink, who started last season. He won't hurt us. #4 is senior Tim Rice, who is decent. Last guard is frosh Omar Ware. He has potential but he is not ready yet.

Frosh Marq Qual is at SF. He looks very good.

Soph Hege Pefo starts at PF. He started for Texas last season.

Senior Ike Gard, a transfer from West Virginia, is at C. He should be our best player.

#1 big man off the bench is frosh Glen Topp. He looks good. #2 is senior Drew Weal, who won't hurt us at all. Next is senior Tod Woma, whose defense is not quite where we want it. Then it is Rado Rodz, a soph who may start later in his career. Finally it is frosh Jack Meex who is not ready.

11/7: Woodrow Wilson is re-elected in a very close election. Jeannette Rankin, from Montana, becomes the first woman elected to the U. S. House of representatives.

The 40 hour week begins in a very few factories and businesses.

11/12: We start at the Coaches Classic with #3 seed Oregon. We're #14. They seem to be better outside while we look better inside but there is very little to go on.

11/13: Back and forth. Up 1 after 10. A big late run puts us up 38-21 at the half. We are dominating inside. Up 16 with 10 to play.

70-58. We were never challenged in the second half. 19, 11, 3, 3 for SF Marq Qual. C Ike Gard was in foul trouble for most of the second half.

Lucy is with child again. She is due in late April/early May. We are delighted!

11/14: #6 seed Pitt is next, in the quarter finals. We are strongly favored, mostly due to our inside game. The were not impressive in their opening win.

11/15: We score the first 9. Up only 6 after 10. 40-28 at halftime. 12 for Qual, 11 for Pefo. We own the inside and we are turning them over. Up 26 with 10 to go!

88-56. A rout! 16, 7, 3, 4 blocks for Gard, 16, 10 for Qual, 17, 8, 3 for Pefo, 16, 2, 5 for Hart. +24 in the paint.

11/16: #10 seed New Orleans in the semifinals. We think we are much better but they did beat two teams to get here! They are strong inside. This tournament is rife with upsets, the 4 teams left are #1 vs. #12, #10 vs. #14 (us).

11/17: Close early. Down 6 after 10. 35-43 at the half. They are shooting 55.2%; we need to play better defense! 3 fouls for gard. 11 points for Pefo. Up 1 with 10 to play; we are finally waking up.

85-79 but it was not easy! 20, 5 for Pefo, 19, 6 for sub F/C Glen Topp. They outplayed us inside but 12 turnovers to 24 helped, and we were +7 from the foul line.

11/18: #1 seed, #10 ranked Tennessee for the title. They are a huge favorite. They are very hard to score against, and they do everything well.

11/19: Down 7 after 10; they are as tough as we expected them to be. 24-32 at the half. We're playing good defense but shooting 25.9%. We catch up early on. Down 3 with 10 to go.

63-67. It was tied several times late. They scored the last 4 points. Proud of my team! 20, 12 for Qual, 14, 7, 3 blocks for Gard. They beat us outside, 11 for our starting guards, 24 for theirs.

The battle of the Somme ends after more than a million are killed. Nothing was gained by either side.

11/21: Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph dies after a 68 year reign.

12/1: Civil war in Greece.

12/4: 77-66 at American. We led all the way, by as many as 21. 17, 10 for Pefo, 13, 9 for Topp. +28 in the paint.

77-56 at Bradley. We led all the way again. 14, 8 for Gard, 17, 3, 1, 5 for Webb. Big edge inside and we shot better.

63-58 in a close one at Colgate. We led by 1 at the half and it was close throughout the second half. 16, 13, 4 steals for Gard, 18 for Qual.

We won but we did not play well, 25 turnovers, -12 in the paint.

83-61 at home over Akron. It was never close. 19, 3 for Qual, 16, 8 for Webb, 12, 10, 3 blocks for Pefo. WE reigned inside.

We are 7-1, ranked #25.

12/18: 85-63 over Canisius here. We led for the last 37 minutes. 11 players scored. Huge advantage inside, 9 turnovers.

86-68 over Missouri here. 50-30 at the half. 12, 13, 3, 4 blocks for Gard, 16 each for Webb and Qual. +28 in the paint, +17 rebounds, 8 turnovers.

96-62 over Charleston here. Yet another easy win. 25, 8 for Gard, 25, 6 for Webb, 18, 9, 3 for Qual, 12, 1, 11 for hart. 6 turnovers and we owned the paint.

We're playing decent teams and beating them easily.

Battle of Verdun ends with a French “victory.” Nearly a million killed on all sides.

Lucy and I really have a wonderful relationship. We are loving, and very caring of each other. We smile and laugh together regularly. We both love music and play it in our home most of the time. We go to concerts when we can. Our next door neighbors have a teenage daughter who watches Elmer. He really likes her so it is never a problem for us to leave. When I am home on the weekend and free we like to go to a concert or less often a movie.

We are looking at the new “radios.” They are very expensive and the sound is not very clear, but hopefully they will improve in time.

I do not want to purchase an automobile and Lucy supports me in that. We do perfectly well with the trolley and the railroad.
