UC Davis Aggies (4-9, 1-1, 2nd place tie) @ Cal Poly Mustangs (9-6, 1-1, 2nd place tie)

Colin Chang (Musty the Mustang mascot)

Cal Poly was established in 1901 by the state of California as a “learn-by-doing” college. Of course in those days a major component was agricultural. And while engineering is now the biggest major here, we still have an active agricultural department which supports the vast agricultural portion of the state’s economy…the state of California has the largest agricultural production of any U.S. state. In 1925, students at Cal Poly chose the Mustang for our nickname. The university has a live horse named Musty that makes an appearance at some outdoor sporting events. But he’s not a basketball fan (plus the athletic department is doesn’t support having a horse clip clop across the basketball court). So I (along with a couple other Cal Poly students) bring the Musty the Mascot costume to life. It’s fun and the fans enjoy it (and I must admit, it’s helped me meet some great coeds…they seem to like the way I buck. :D ).

The crowd was responsive and enthusiastic which makes what I do more fun and easier as well. It took our team 5 or 6 minutes but they then began to control the game. Midway through the first half we were ahead 29-17. With 8 minutes to go in the half, we led 34-17 and the crowd was really revved up and I was stomping all over the place to build the noise level even higher. The team responded by lighting up the scoreboard and attacking the boards on both ends of the court. We continued to pad our lead and when the half finished we were up 47-27 and it was time for me to work the crowd while the our team was in the locker room.

Our guys were sleep walking in the early going of the 2nd half. I worked the crowd and got them cheering but the Mustangs didn't respond. The Aggies took advantage and cut our lead to 5 points with 10 minutes remaining. Then with 1-1/2 minutes left the Aggies were behind by just 4 points. And it got got closer. The Mustangs win was razor thin…76-74.

SG Jase Carroll finished with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. PG Danny Preston scored 13 points and had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. C Brandon Bailey had 10 points and 6 rebounds. PF Calvis Barnes scored 8 and pulled down 14 boards while also getting 2 steals.

Cal Poly Mustangs (10-6, 2-1, 2nd place tie) @ UC Irvine Anteaters (8-6, 2-1, 2nd place tie)

Calvis Barnes, senior

We’ve won just 3 of our last 6 games, but worse yet, we’ve only played well in 1 of those games. And tonight’s game will be a tough one since the Anteaters will be hard to beat on their own court. Brandon (Bailey) and I will be challenged since UC Irvine’s interior duo of Paul Dye and Lamont Clark are averaging 17.9 and 16.2 ppg, respectively. Their team is hitting 50% of their FG’s. Cal State Fullerton lost earlier today, so whichever teams wins this game will be tied for 1st place.

It took us over 2 minutes to get a shot off due to making turnovers on our first 2 possessions. We were fouled on the shot but missed both free throws. Eddie (Erskin) hit a jumper on our next possession to finally put some points on the board. Turnovers and fouls plagued us early in the game. The refs were horrible. I got sent to the bench with 2 fouls with 14-1/2 minutes left in the half and we already had 5 team fouls called on us. Brandon Bailey joined me on the bench a minute later. Jase Carroll picked up his 2nd foul 2minutes later. At the 10 minute mark we trailed 18-7 and had made 10 turnovers and had 3 starters in foul trouble. But when the half ended we were only down 36-31. Our bench played great scoring 22 of our 31 points.

In the 2nd half we kept nipping at the Anteaters’ heels but couldn’t overtake them. With 4 minutes left we trailed 61-58. With 30 seconds left we were within 2 points, but our final shots didn’t go down and we lost 70-68. We controlled the boards (+11) but made 7 more turnovers and hit 43% of our shots compared to UC Irvine’s 49% shooting.

Estell (Luton) was fantastic…hitting 8 of 12 FG’s including 5 of 6 from 3 point distance to score 24 points plus also grab 5 boards and block 2 shots. Jase (Carroll) and I each scored 9 and Eddie (Erskin) and Scotty (Lee) both dropped in 8 points. Danny Preston had one of his off-nights, missing all 15 of his FG attempts.

Cal State Northridge Matadors (4-11, 1-3, 9th place tie) @ Cal Poly Mustangs (10-7, 2-2, 3rd place tie)

Rob Benchley, Athletic Director

The team is in a slump. I think having Steve Hastings out with a broken leg has definitely hampered us. No one has stepped up to consistently lead the team. We have a decent sized crowd here tonight, although a bit smaller than if we’d been playing better.

We jumped out to a 13-3 lead with all our points being scored by our 3 starting perimeter players. By hitting an amazing 74% of our shots, we forged a 48-24 halftime lead.

The slaughter continued in the 2nd half. We bulled over the Matadors 92-47. We burned up the nets by hitting 67% of our shots (and 60% of our 3’s) while holding Cal State Northridge’s shooting to 32% and dominating the glass (+14).

SG Jase Carroll had 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals; PG Danny Preston scored 13 and dished out 8 assists; C/PF Estell Luton had 12 points and 3 boards; SF Eddie Erskin scored 11 plus had 3 rebounds; PF Calvis Barnes had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists; C Brandon Bailey scored 9, pulled down 10 rebounds, and had 2 assists and 2 blocks.

Cal Poly Mustangs (11-7, 3-2, 2nd place tie) @ UC San Diego Tritons (9-7, 1-4, 9th place tie)

San Luis Obispo Tribune

AURA BEMOANS MUSTANGS’ INCONSISTENCY

The Mustangs offense ran hot and cold during the first half. They got off to a quick start, then had difficulty hitting shots, and then during the final 10 minutes of the half, they again hit a high percentage of their shots. But Cal Poly’s defense was stellar the entire 20 minutes, holding the Tritons shooting to just 21%. The half ended with the Mustangs firmly in control by a score of 44-14.

Cal Poly’s offense sputtered throughout the entire 2nd half. UC San Diego slowly chipped away at the lead and got as close as 14 points, but ran out of time. The Mustangs came away with a 67-49 victory.

PF Calvis Barnes had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists. PG Danny Preston scored 12 and had 2 assists. C/PF Estell Luton scored 11 and pulled down 7 rebounds and had 2 assists. SF Eddie Erskin had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Coach Fred Aura said, “Those final 20 minutes seemed more like 120 minutes. I’m happy we won, but we were too inconsistent. Overall we played very well in the first half, but were extremely sluggish in the 2nd half. I do want to commend Eddie Erskin though. After a slow start this season, Eddie has come on strong in our last six games, and that’s given us a boost.”

With UC Irvine losing at home to UC Davis, the win by the Mustangs moved them back into a tie for first place with 3 other teams. Cal Poly’s next game is against one of those teams, Cal State Fullerton.

Cory McCreight, 1st Assistant Coach (Recruiting)

DJ Morse and Eddie Erskin got into it during practice. Things got pretty heated. While neither of them are troublemakers, they’re both a bit outside the center of the team, relationship-wise. And today they got on each other’s nerves. Coach Aura pulled them aside and settled things down. The two both took his counseling well. I think they were happy to have the issue defused.

We continually emphasize “TEAM” and want all our players to pull together and get along well with each other. But we have to realize there are a bunch of different personalities, desires, and pressures on our players and there will be times when not everything and everyone meshes. Sometimes the best we can do is to smooth the rough edges a little bit. So I’m not going to lose any sleep over what happened between DJ and Eddie. My bigger concern about DJ is that since he hasn’t really fit in well with teammates and hasn’t got as much playing time as he wants, he may decide to transfer after this season.

Cal State Fullerton Titans (8-9, 4-2, 1st place tie) @ Cal Poly Mustangs (12-7, 4-2, 1st place tie)

Tom Poole, Cal Poly alum

With this being a game of two teams that are tied for 1st place, the Robert A. Mott Athletics Center is jam-packed. The Titans have a good inside-outside duo of C JaRon Mihm (18.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and SG Gerald Vidoni (14.2 ppg).

I liked how the Mustangs interspersed man-to-man and zone defenses to keep the Titans off-balance and forced poor shot selection. Cal Poly was therefore able to open a lead and gradually move out to a double digit advantage. At the half, the Mustangs were up 35-26.

In the 2nd half Cal Poly’s defense continued to hold the Titans at bay. With 12 minutes remaining the Mustangs led by 22 points. Cal Poly kept the Titans from making a run to finish the game with a 71-46 stomping of Cal State Fullerton. The Mustangs dominated all team stats.

PG Danny Preston scored 17 points and had 3 rebounds and 4 assists; PF Calvis Barnes had 10 points, 8 boards, and 3 assists; SF Louis Taylor hit for 9 points plus grabbed 4 rebounds; C Brandon Bailey scored just 4 points but had 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 blocks.

Omari Aura, 3rd Assistant Coach (player development/practice)

We’re 2/3 though our season and nearly half way through conference play. While overall we’ve played pretty decent ball, I don’t feel we’ve done as well as I thought we would and certainly have been less consistent than we need to be. We’re in a real dog-fight for supremacy within the Big West. We have the talent to pull away from the competition within the conference, but just haven’t do so. Here’s my assessment of how each of our players is doing:

PG Danny Preston: Has been hot and cold so needs to improve his consistency and leadership of the team. He’s a senior and has been a starter PG all 4 years but isn’t the strong leader that he could and should be. He’s averaging 9.9 ppg and 3.6 apg, both of which I feel should be higher. We’re working with him on finding the open man, but his on-court vision isn’t a strong point. In 5 out of our 20 games, his shooting has been absolutely abysmal…and he’s better than that. He needs to avoid getting into a funk during games. My dad told me that Danny broke his wrist during his freshman season and that while he came in as a highly touted recruit who produced immediately, that the injury may have stymied his progression.

PG Scotty Lee: Another senior. While I’m sure he’d like to be starting, he’s taken well to coming in off the bench. This season he’s not been the spark plug energizing our team as often as he did last year. He’s a good shooter who can give us good production from either guard position, but his shooting hasn’t been as accurate as in past seasons. He’s averaging 5.7 ppg and 2.6 apg while playing about 15 mpg. He’s a natural shooter who I think just needs to regain some confidence. I’m working with him on that.

SG Jase Carroll: He’s a freshman we knew while we were recruiting that he would be good. But he’s stepped into a starting role much more quickly and easily that we expected. He’s got a sort of wonky shooting form, but it’s been working (he’s hitting 45% of his FG’s, 34% of his 3’s, and 87% of his FT’s). He’s averaging 11.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and 2.4 apg. As he becomes more experienced, he’s going to be even stronger and more consistent. His personality is, let’s just say a bit different, but he’s making inroads on melding well with teammates.

SG Damien Harris: As a senior, I think he figured he was the heir apparent to becoming a starter this season. While I’m sure he’s disappointed, he’s accepted his role, although I think he wants more on-court minutes. Defense definitely is not his forte. He’s not hitting as high a percentage of his shots as he has in previous seasons, but maybe that’s because we’ve only been playing him 8.5 mpg. He’s averaging 2.4 ppg and 1.5 rpg.

SG Jon Overton: We’re were thrilled when he transferred from Clemson last summer. As a freshman there, he had been a starter and played and shot well. But he has yet to show us the level of skills that allow us to give him more than the 4.3 mpg that he’s played thus far this season. As a freshman at Clemson he knocked down 48% of his FG’s and 39% of his 3’s before he broke his arm in mid-season. While he’s recovered from that injury, maybe his shooting form was altered since he’s only hit 32% of his FG’s and 11 of his 3’s, but that’s also somewhat due to not being able to get into sync playing so little for us. We’re working hard to try to reestablish his form and production that had prior to the injury.

SF Eddie Erskin: We thought this senior would be our starter (as he was last season) and he was as this season kicked off. But he lost the starting role when he was just obviously out of sync. So he came in off the bench and mostly just looked bad. But all of a sudden things turned around for him, he began shooting extremely well and won back the starting role in 5 of our last 6 games. His shooting has been so strong of late that he’s now hitting 52% of his FG’s and 92% of his FT’s for the season. He’s not really a 3-point shooter. He’s averaging just 3.9 ppg and 2.6 rpg for the season, but that’s because we had to severely limit his playing time for the first 12 or so games. In his last 5 games he’s averaged 8.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and 2.8 apg.

SF Louis Taylor: This sophomore has been a pleasant surprise. He took over as a starter and was solid. While not a truly good shooter, he has averaged 6.2 ppg as well as 3.3 rpg this season while starting 14 of our 20 games. He’s so likeable that he’s been extremely good for our team chemistry as well. Now that he’s back to coming in off the bench, he’s accepted that role without reservation and has even stepped in to play some PF for us. In our last 3 games he’s averaged 7 ppg while on the court just 14 mpg.

SF Kenyon Farrell: We recruited him to provide us with depth and realized he needed a lot of development. He’s gotten into 14 of our games and played just 3.4 mpg in those games. But…he’s dropped in 57% of his FGA’s. So in our last game we gave him 10 minutes of play and he hit 2 of 3 from the field. Kenyon’s a tremendously hard worker and the freshman has already fit really well into the team. I think this guy’s going to eventually be a stronger player than we originally thought.

PF Calvis Barnes: I think this guy enjoys being obstinate. Often seemingly disgruntled, he’s still a good team player. We’ve moved him back and forth between C and PF and he does well at both positions. This season as a senior, he missed nearly half the games we’ve played with a broken finger. But he came back and stepped right back into dominating inside. For the season he’s averaging 10.8 ppg and 7.2 rpg, but has averaged almost 13 ppg and over 8 rpg after the injury in our last 7 games. While his personality can be a challenge, I’ll miss having this guy anchoring our interior next year.

PF DJ Moore: He came to us as a freshman with tremendous promise, but was much more raw than expected and we definitely thought about redshirting him. We didn’t and after Steve Hastings was injured, we were happy to have DJ available for depth. He’s averaging just 1.4 ppg and 1.1 rpg in the 8.1 mpg he’s played for us, but he’s definitely showing improvement and the experience he’s gaining will is invaluable for his future development since he has excellent potential. I’ve been hoping he breaks out this season, but reasonably it’s much more likely it will a year or more away.

C Brandon Bailey: He was a very solid backup player for us last season as a freshman, but he’s been a very good starter for us this year. He’s averaging 7.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg this season. He had 3 straight games for us early this year when he was awesomely dominant and productive for us. I’m hoping he again peaks for us as we roll into post-season play. When Steve Hastings returns, we’ll have to make a difficult decision on which 2 players (Hastings, Barnes or Bailey) start for us. But however we decide, all 3 will play a lot. Brandon’s hit 59% of his FGA’s this season.

C/PF Estell Luton: Even though he was a starter for Chicago State before transferring to us as a sophomore, he’s been a consistent sub for us at both C and PF. He’s performed well for us in that role and this season he’s averaging 8.8 ppg and 4.6 rpg. Weirdly he’s hit just 47% of his FG’s but has drilled 45% of his 49 shots this season from beyond the 3-point line. His shooting percentage within 10 feet and outside the 3 point arc are very good, but his mid-range shooting has been poor. We’re working with him on shot selection and focusing on his getting clear when he’s at midrange but he’s not very receptive.

C Steve Hastings: This junior transferred to us from North Dakota State last summer where he’d been a fantastic scorer (18.3 ppg as a freshman and 28.4 ppg as a sophomore). Man, I hated to see him go down with a broken leg a month ago. He’d been our top scorer (14.5 ppg), hit 64% of his FG’s, and was a very good rebounder (5.2 rpg). It looks like he’ll be back and ready to play by mid-February, so that will be a big shot in our arm for the end of conference play and for post-season tournament play.

Cal Poly Mustangs (13-7, 5-2, 1st place tie) @ Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (6-13, 3-4, 6th place tie)

David Williams, 2nd Assistant Coach (scouting)

Playing on Bakersfield’s home court has been a challenge for us over the years. This season, though, they’re 4-7 at home, so maybe we have a better chance than usual. Two of their home court victories were against UC Davis and Cal State Fullerton and both of those teams are in the upper reaches of the conference standings, so we’re going to have to work hard to come away with a “W” tonight. Their primary strength offensively comes from their interior duo of Kenny Echols (12.5 ppg and 6.6 rpg) and Dan Bosl (11.8 ppg and 8.0 rpg). I’d like to see us attack those guys inside and use our depth to wear those two guys down and also press a lot to stress all their starters. All of us coaches were very happy to have Jon Overton hit two 3-pointers late in the half.

Our inside game was successful early as we crafted a 19-4 lead after 6 minutes of play. Then we got sloppy, got out of sync, and let the Roadrunners go on a 14-2 run to get back into the game. While it wasn’t necessarily pretty, we sort of bludgeoned our way back to take a 51-37 halftime lead. Our inside emphasis worked with Calvis Barnes and Estell Luton scoring 11 and 9 points, respectively…and getting several of Cal State Bakersfield’s starters into foul trouble.

2-1/2 minutes into the 2nd half we opened a 20 point lead. Our lead fluctuated just above and just below 20 points the rest of the game. The game ended with a 94-76 win by us. Our game plan had worked well and it was a very good team effort by all of our guys.

PF Calvis Barnes had 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. SF Eddie Erskin and C Estell Luton both scored 11 points with Erskin getting 8 rebounds and 3 assists and Luton pulling down 3 boards. SG Jase Carroll, PG Scotty Lee, SF Louis Taylor, and SG Jon Overton each dropped in 9 points…Lee also had 7 assists and 4 steals, Taylor grabbed 5 rebounds, and Overton hit 3 of 3 of his 3’s. C Brandon Bailey had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. We held both Bosl and Echols below their season averages.

We’re now alone in first place due to losses by UC Irvine and UC Davis. Those 2 teams plus 2 others are but 1 game behind us, though.

Cory McCreight, 1st Assistant Coach (Recruiting)

We’ve gotten word that none of the 5 recruits who have chosen to play for us next season had SAT scores that were below our minimum requirement. In fact 4 of them were well above our required minimum. . SG Brandon Muckle, who we were afraid might not make it, got a 960, which is exactly at our minimum score requirement. The high school 4-star recruit to whom we’ve offered our last remaining scholarship also exceeded our minimum requirement. Now we just have to keep working on him to get him to move us to the top of his list of colleges he’s interested in attending. I think if we can keep him on the hook, that we can land him when we get to do home visits this spring.

UC Riverside Highlanders (10-9, 5-3, 2nd place tie) @ Cal Poly Mustangs (14-7, 6-2, 1st place)

Kevin Kraemer, Cal Poly Grad Student

I’ve been putting stats together for Coach Aura and the other coaches for Cal Poly this year.

After this game the Mustangs will be halfway through the Big West Conference schedule. We need to win to remain in sole possession of first place in the standings. The Highlanders have won 4 of their last 5 games. All 4 of those victories were against teams in the lower half of the Big West standings. They’re strong defensively, allowing opponents just 67.4 ppg, but they don’t steal (7.5 spg) or block many shots (3.2 bpg). And while they don’t score a lot of points (just 67.3 ppg), they shoot well from the field (47.4%) and at the foul line (73.8%). Most all team stats favor us and our bench is much stronger.

I’m wishing for Danny Preston to have a big night and edge his scoring average back up into double-digit territory. I’ve heard from the coaches that C/PF Estell Luton is suffering from back spasms that are likely to limit his playing time in this game.

At the first media time out, we’re ahead 9-2 and have hit 4 of 8 of our FGA’s and have 3:1 turnover advantage due to our 3 steals. We hold a 32-23 halftime advantage due to our guys hitting 52% of their shots while holding the Highlanders’ shooting to just 32%. We’re +4 on the boards and have made 3 less turnovers. SF Eddie Erskin made all 5 of his shots including one from beyond the arc to score 11 points. But both of our PG’s (Preston and Lee) plus Erskin have been charged with 2 fouls apiece.

After 3-1/2 minutes in the 2nd half, the UC Riverside coach has to call a time out due to our outscoring them 8-2 thus far in the half and increasing our lead to 15 points. Our lead expands to 20 with 10-1/2 minutes remaining in the game, and after being called for just 5 team fouls in the first half, the Highlanders now have 8 in the 2nd half. Both teams shot poorly in the final 10 minutes. Cal Poly put away the Highlanders by a final score of 63-42. The Mustangs shooting dropped from 50% fo 43% due to some god-awful shooting late in the game. The Highlanders shooting plummeted to 28%. Cal Poly out-rebounded UC Riverside 38-23 and they made 11 turnovers compared to 15 by the Highlanders.

The star of the game definitely was SF Eddie Erskin who scored 18 points and had 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Also scoring in double figures were: PF Calvis Barnes with 12 points to go along with 5 rebounds; and SG Jase Carroll with 10 points and 2 assists and 3 steals.
