3/12: #1 East, #1 overall, as expected. We face the #16 seed, Illinois ST, 17-18.

3/16: 84-76. We were awful. 11 lead changes, 8 ties, and we didn’t put them away until the last few minutes. Up 5 at the half.

22, 3 for Arms, 18, 2, 3, 5 for Barr, 15, 7 for Long. They actually out rebounded us. +36 in the paint saved us.

Not a good way to start and I let the players know I’m not happy.

#8 seed Tennessee, 23-10, in the 2nd round.

They’re very good PG is playing sick, flu or something. 3-3 vs. the top 25. They’re good inside and out. If we’re not sharp we could be in trouble.

3/18: 88-72. We started slow yet again. They led by 8 and we got it to 4 at halftime. We were much better in the 2nd. 28, 4 for Arms, who we’re REALLY going to miss, 21, 6, 2, 4 for Barr, 14, 6 for Dark, who’s back at 100%. +30 in the paint.

Post game press conference (excerpts): “Luke Bows, EPSN. Coach Wynn, two easy wins to start the tournament.”

“Yes, but both of those teams were over matched and frankly, we weren’t sharp in either game.”

“Are you concerned?”

“Very much so. Nothing but really good teams ahead. We’re not going to beat any of them unless we up our game.”

#4 seed, #17 ranked Florida ST, 25-10, in the Sweet Sixteen. We beat them by 23 in December at home. They’ve been playing really well lately. We’d better be at our best.

3/23: “Okay guys. Let’s get out of the gate strong and keep the intensity up!”

99-90 in a real shootout. Not happy with the D but the O pulled us through. 53-39 at halftime. We played well in the 1st half for once. But we didn’t play D in the 2nd, giving up 51. Fortunately, we were hitting shots. We shot 51.6% to their 47.6%. The refs were horrible, 55 fouls called. They didn’t make their foul shots, 24-44, while we did, 35-47, and that was a huge factor. Their coach must be pulling out his hair. 23 for Art Daws from the bench, 17, 14 for Long, 13, 5, 3 steals for Arms. Our bench scored 39, +6 over theirs. +11 RBs, +14 in the paint. But the difference was at the line.

#2 ranked, #2 seed (How does that happen?) Illinois, 33-4, in the Elite Eight. They’re very good outside and not bad inside. 4-2 vs. ranked teams. They score and they can play D. On the stat sheet they’re better than us in almost every category.

3/25: 89-77. HUGE win! We started very fast and were up 20 at the half after having led by 32. They came back some in the 2nd but never threatened us. This is as well as we’ve played in the post season.

22, 6 for Arms, 18, 10 for Long, 17, 5 for Daws, who has been hot. +12 RBs, +44 in the lane. Our inside game was terrific!

Post game press conference (excerpts): “Luke Bows, EPSN. Coach Wynn, you have to be happy with the way your guys played tonight.”

“Yes I am. It’s the first time in the entire post season that I thought we were at our best. We needed to be, Illinois is a very good team.”

“Can you win it all?”

“If we play the way we did tonight we’ll have a real shot at it. If we don’t, we’ll come up short.”

#3 ranked, #1 seed Seton Hall, 31-7, in the national semifinal. We beat them by 11, 10, and then 8 in the Big East title game. It’s really hard to keep beating a very good team.

4/1: 86-78! A VERY costly win. Our best player, Ted Arms, tore his Achilles. Sean Dark will start but the bench is very short with only one big man on it, Art Daws. SG Ray Barr will
play some at SF.

30 lead changes, 12 ties, and a battle for about 37-38 minutes. 17, 6, 3, 6, 3 blocks for Ali Wins, in his biggest game of the season. 13, 6 for Long, 10 each for Barr and Daws. The bench was +15. +14 in the paint.

Arms went out after 12 ½ minutes.

#4 ranked, #2 seed Oklahoma ST, 33-7, in the title game. 6-3 vs. Top 25 teams. They are as good as you would expect a national finalist to be, and with Arms out, they’re favored.

Post game press conference (excerpts): “Luke Bows, EPSN. Great win coach, but a terribly bad break.”

“That’s for sure. Ted Arms is our best player.”

“Can you win without him?”

“Oklahoma ST is a very, very good team. We’ll need to be at our very best and hope that they’re not. But I guarantee we’ll give it all we have.”

“34 game winning streak.”

“Which means not a thing!”

4/3: 70-73. It was close all the way. At the end we had a chance to tie it with a three but Ray Barr missed a 23 footer long. Both front lines played in foul trouble all night, and we weren’t deep enough to deal with that. Their bench scored 36, ours 20, which was the difference and more. +14 in the paint, but it wasn’t enough.

16, with 5 steals for Barr, 12, 9 for Dark in a strong effort starting for Arms, 12, 7 for Long, 6,10, 2, 3 for Gari.

Great season!

4/4: Awards: I am national and conference COY. In the Big East, Ted Arms makes the first team and Ike Long makes the second. I thought Long should have been first team as well, and Ray Barr should have been 2nd.

4/9: Not a chance I’m going anywhere, hopefully ever! TP goes from 83 to 89.

4/23 : I want a budget increase.

No. Not happy. A. D. Don Grey says he’s working on it for next year. Honestly? He’s a football guy and the money we brought in went to the football program. I took the decision calmly but I’m not happy.

38-2, undefeated Big East champs, lost the national title game by 3 with our best player out. I’ll take it!

In my 8 year career I’m 249-47, .841.

There’s a flu going around and many of the babies have it. How do these things happen in such a sterile environment!

5/1: #3 recruiting class.

Preseason #1.

We exceed our Expected to Spend number.

The flu has run its course. A few babies were pretty seriously ill but everyone is better now. The kids are almost 5 months old.

5/29: Guard Don Flin, who might have started, transfers out. We’ll look for the best player we can get, regardless of position.

We offer to a PG.

6/2: No. We offer to the same guy, who now has us in his top 5.

6/5: We get the PG. He could be our #3 guard.

6/25: We’ll go to Indy and to all of the regional camps.

6/26: 5 scholarships. We want 3 guards.

Another extreme cyclone hits. The shack the terraforming robots are using is so well fortified that it survives, but there is some lost equipment.

Babies are developing personalities, which, much to my surprise, I find quite interesting.

7/11: Recruiting is going well.

7/31: We offer to a PG, an SG, a SFs, and a PF.

8/7: 5 on the Norton list: PG Leon Hess is #3, C Bri Thun is #9, PG Rip Will is #37, PG Ray Barr is #41, C Ike Long is #44.

The kids are growing. A couple have started to crawl.

9/11: We get 2, lose 2. We get a PF, #31, and an SF, #43.

9/18: We get the #1 recruit in the country, a PG! We also get an SF, #42. We NEED another guard.

Going to the Paradise International. Very competitive schedule.

9/25: We get an SG, #26. Recruiting is done. I should have tried harder for a third guard instead of 3 bigs but we’ll be fine.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We have about 7 or 8 guys who should start.

11/6: Final rankings for our committed recruits: #1, 26, 29, 39, 42.

11/15: We start tomorrow at my old school, #15 NC ST. On paper it’s anybody’s game.

Here’s the lineup:

Frosh Leon Hess is at PG. Terrific offensive player and he plays strong D.

Junior Rip Will, a transfer from Oregon, is at SG. Another really good looking guard.

Senior Ray Barr, a natural guard, is at SF. He was one of our best players last year.

1st guard off the bench is senior Ric Agba who is good, but has never managed to get much playing time. Senior Ben Prao is next.

Juco junior Jed Mack is at PF. He is as good a glass eater as you’ll find anywhere.

Frosh Bri Thun is at C. He’s got the whole game.

1st big man off the bench is senior Ike Long. He’ll get starter’s minutes. Next is senior Sean Dark who is too good not to start, but that’s how strong we are. Frosh Bret Evan is good, but he’s not ready yet. Soph Art Daws is also a decent player.

11/16: 82-75. The fans cheered me when I first walked onto the court. Not so much as the game progressed.

They built an early lead and got it to 13. We narrowed it to 5 by halftime. We came out strong in the 2nd and it was back and forth until the last few minutes when we took over.

15, 11, 2, 3 for Thun, 14, 8 for Mack, 12, 7 for Long, 11, 5, 6 for Hess but 7 TOs, 11, 5, 3 for Dark. +11 RBs. +23 for our very strong bench, and they won it for us.

Off to the Paradise Invitational. We’re the #1 seed and will play #8 seed Appalachian ST.

11/18: 95-59. A real blow out. We led by as many as 40. 36, 6, 3 blocks for Bri Thun. 14, 12 for Mack, 10, 5 for Dark. +20 RBs, +52 in the lane.

#4 seed Minnesota, 1-1, in the semis. I don’t think they can stay with us.

11/19: 76-45. Never a game. 40-18 at the half. 15, 11, 6 blocks for Thun, 14, 11 for Mack, 11, 5 for Long. Terrific D. +19 RBs, +38 in the paint.

#18 ranked, #7 seed California, 3-0, in the title game. We score more points and give up fewer than they do.

11/20: 95-73 and the title. 52-28 at halftime. 24, 8 for C Bri Thun, 19, 12 for Mack, 13, 2, 7 for SG Rip Will, 12, 8 for Long, 10, 8, 8, 3 for Hess. +48 in the paint, +18 RBs. Only 4 TOs.

We’re 4-0, ranked #1.

Most f the babies are crawling and a few are walking. They’re all over the building but fortunately, not in the holos.

11/26: 87-47 over Memphis here in a total blowout. 42-20 at the half. 22, 3 for Daws, 18, 9 for Long, 18, 4 for Thun, 10, 14, 3, 3 for Mack. We are so deep. +38 for the bench. +21 RBs, +64 inside.

11/30: 91-84 at #7 Ga. Tech. Up 50-39 at halftime. They got it to 2 on 3 occasions in the 2nd. 27, 12 for Mack, 22, 6, 5 blocks for Thus, 17, 7 for Long. +34 in the paint, +18 RBs.

8-0, #1, NET #1.

12/21: 101-93 over #15 Illinois here. It was close all the way with 12 lead changes and 10 ties. We were up by 4 at the half. They took the lead 3 times in the 2nd. We went on a late run to break it open, getting the lead to 14 with just under 2 minutes left.

22, 10 for Long, 22, 2, 3 for Barr, 21, 3 for Thun. +15 RBs, +30 in the lane.

12/24: 88-78 at #8 Florida. We started fast and never trailed. Up 13 at the break. They never got closer than 5 in the 2nd. 17, 11 for Mack, 15, 3 blocks for Thun, 11, 6, 10 for Hess, but 7 TOs. 12, 8, 4 blocks for Long. Big edge inside.

12/28: Our last pre-conference game was at Florida ST. 112-102 in a real shootout. We shot 60.9%. We won it at the line, going 32-43 to their 11-14. The other coach wound up with 2 Ts and I can’t blame him. 35, 7 in his best game so far for Bri Thun. 20, 16, 1, 3 for Mack, 14, 6 for Long, 15 assists for Hess.

1/1/2231: We end pre-conf play at 15-0, #1, NET #1.

+17.5 PPGs, #1 in scoring. +13.8 RBs, #1 in RB margin. -3.8 assists, 10.8 per game.

19.4, 6.4 for Thun, 14.7, 10.5 for Mack, 14.5, 8.0 for Long. 7 assists for Hess.

We’ve taken every possible precaution to be sure there’s no loss of oxygen and no hull breach on the building. Any sort of disaster would kill most or all of the kids. We really can’t provide hazmat suits for kids who are constantly growing. We have back up systems behind back up systems in place.

1/21: 94-90 at Georgetown. Terrible D but our scoring power saved us. Close all the way. Up 5 at halftime. We were awful from the line, 20-40, which made the game closer than it should have been.

But we sank 4-4 in the last 30 seconds to hang onto the lead.

25, 8 for Mack, 24, 6, 3 blocks for Thun, 13, 7 for Long, 13, 3 steals for Barr. +22 in the paint. We need to play better defensively.

1/25: 86-72 at Marquette. Up 11 at the half. They never got closer than 7 in the 2nd half. 27, 11, 4, 3 blocks for Thun, 17, 4, 3 for Barr, 13, 6 for Mack. +20 RBs, +22 on 2nd chances.

1/28: 82-55 over Butler here. Up 10 at the half and we took total charge early in the 2nd half. 22, 6 for Thun, 15, 6 for Long, 12, 2, 6, 4 for Will. +40 in the lane, +15 on 2nd chances, +14 RBs.

1/29: All of our recruits hit our SAT score.

Bri Thun is #3 on the Norton list and Ike Long is #23.

2/1: 94-71 over #14 Creighton here. 51-36 at the break. 26, 13 for Thun, 18, 3 for Long, 14, 5, 10, 3 for Hess. +21 RBs, +44 inside.

22-1, 7-1, 1 back of #2 Seton Hall who comes here later in the season. 1 up on Creighton after last night’s win. 2 up on 2 teams. #1, NET #1.

+16.6 PPG, #1 in scoring. #4 in both RBs and assists. +13.2 RBs, #1 in RB margin. -4.3 turnovers, 10.3 per game.

Thun gets 20.8, 7.6. 15.0, 9.5 for Mack, 14.3, 6.3 for Long. 7.9 assists for Hess.

The terraforming crew has completed one trip around the planet and they’re back here. We’re pausing the program to do thorough checks of all the robots before we send them out again.
