Southern Jaguars (11-5, 4-0) @ Grambling Tigers (9-7, 1-3)

Obviously going up against the conference leading Jaguars was a big challenge for us. While our practices for the game were going well, I sensed the team was doubting their ability to beat Southern. I responded by driving them harder with the intensity of my voice growing steadily. As we completed our final practice, it still seemed the team didn’t feel they were up to the challenge. I gave them a highly-spirited, top of my voice pep talk that was unusual for me. As I was completing it I could feel my voice cracking. And crack it did, because the next morning I had no voice whatsoever. I treated it throughout the day but by game time my laryngitis was in full bloom. All I could do was wave my arms and gesture to my players and write down quick comments to my assistants. Our home crowd carried the team early and we built a 10-point lead with 3 minutes to go in the first half, but suddenly we hit a wall and the Jaguars took advantage to surge back to go ahead 37-36 at halftime. We slipped further behind in the early-going of the 2nd half as our offense continued to falter. We called a timeout. All I could do was draw up a play, but my 3rd assistant coach Glen Fife, who normally is low-key, ripped into the team. The guys were shocked (as was I). But his surprising outburst stimulated our guys to turn the game around. We overtook Southern with the team feeding SG Lonnie Robertson who responded by driving, pulling up, faking, and getting up shots however he could. He finished with 23 points (to go along with 10 rebounds and 4 assists) to lead us to a 79-70 victory. C Correy Parker recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, SF Aubrey Johnson also scored 10 with PF Etan Benton and reserve SG/SF Brad O’Neil each adding 9 points.

Grambling Tigers (10-7, 2-3) @ Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (7-9, 2-3)

We knocked down 55% of our shots in the first half to help us gain a 36-30 halftime advantage. We began the 2nd half with an 8-0 run. We held onto a double digit lead until midway through the half but then the Golden lions got hot and tied the game at 61-61 with 5 minutes remaining. Arkansas-Pine Bluff went up by 2 with 1 minute to go but we tied it again 30 seconds later. We regained the ball following a turnover by the Golden Lions with 12 seconds to go. We worked the ball around and SG Brad O’Neil found PG Duane Robinson who had run a nice route under the basket and back to just left of the key. Robinson put up an 8 footer with bounced up off the rim and settled back through the silks with 1 second remaining to give us a 69-67 road win. The team stats were just as close as the final score. Leading our effort were: SF/SG Brad O’Neil with 14 points and 6 rebounds; PG Duane Robinson who scored 12 points and dished out 4 assists; C Correy Parker with 10 points; and SG Lonnie Robertson who had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 assists. The victory moved us into a tie for 6th place in the standings.

Prairie View Panthers (4-13, 1-5) @ Grambling Tigers (11-7, 3-3)

We quickly jumped ahead and put the Panthers in our rearview mirror by surging to a 53-28 halftime lead. We eased up in the 2nd half but still were able to roll over Prairie View, winning by a lopsided 86-67 score. Topping our scoring were SG Lonnie Robertson with 23 points (he also had 6 rebounds and 4 assists) and SF/PF Aubrey Johnson with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Grambling Tigers (12-7, 4-3) @ Jackson State Tigers (3-15, 1-6)

This game was tougher than it should have been for us. We trailed 37-33 at the half. But after 17 lead changes we emerged with a hard-fought 71-67 victory. We dominated the team stats but never could put Jackson State away. PF/C Etan Benton had 18 points and 3 steals, SG Lonnie Robertson hit for 11 points plus pulled down 7 boards, and SF/PF Aubrey Johnson added 10 points.

Grambling Tigers (13-7, 5-3) @ Alcorn State Braves (14-5, 7-1)

The Braves are tough opponents, particularly on their own hardwood. Our 4-game win streak is on the line. We need to play our best to have a chance. We hit our first 5 shots to take a 12-6 lead. But Alcorn State then began cutting into our lead and the lead shifted back and forth over the final 10 minutes of the half. We trailed 43-39 at halftime. The 2nd half was a battle the entire way. The game was tied with 2 minutes to go. But after 28 lead changes and 15 ties, Alcorn State took advantage of our turnovers and fouls to score the final 8 points. After playing them even for 38 minutes, we were handed an 83-75 loss. We had 5 players score in double figures: SG Lonnie Robertson—17; C Correy Parker—17 (plus 11 rebounds); SF/PF Aubrey Johnson—12 (plus 5 boards); PF/C Etan Benton—11 (plus 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals); and SF/SG Brad O’Neil—10 (plus 3 boards and 3 blocks).

Troubles in Paradise

The loss to Alcorn State brought a festering disagreement between Etan Benton and Anthony Erwin to the surface. I brought both in to let them know I wasn't pleased and they needed to get their acts goether. You never know how guys will respond, but both were repentant when I counseled them. I had thought our team chemistry was pretty good, but apparently we need to work harder on improving some of our guys’ attitudes.

Alabama A&M Bulldogs (9-11, 5-4) @ Grambling Tigers (13-8, 5-4)

We’re tied with the Bulldogs (and Alabama State) for 4th place in the SWAC. We immediately took the lead and never looked back. Before the midpoint of the first half we held a double digit lead and at the half we were up 38-26. We stretched our advantage to as much as 22 points in the 2nd half and won with ease 79-64. SG Lonnie Robertson had another big game with 28 points, hitting 10 of 14 from the field including sinking 4 of his 7 shots from 3 point range. C Correy Parker had 11 points,, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

Grambling Tigers (14-8, 6-4) @ Florida A&M Rattlers (10-11, 7-3)

We thrashed the Rattlers in the first half 48-25. We maintained a 20+ point cushion for most of the 2nd half…only easing up a big in the final 5 minutes. Our winning margin was 72-57. A good defensive effort the entire game. SG Lonnie Robertson topped our scoring with 17 points. C Correy Parker had another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. SF/SG Brad O’Neil had 10 points, 4 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals. The victory moved us into a three-way tie for 3rd place in the conference. Lonnie Robertson is now averaging 17.4 ppg which 2nd highest in the SWAC, and barely behind the league leader. Correy Parker now had 4 double-doubles, which is tied for the conference lead.

Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (7-15, 4-7) @ Grambling Tigers (15-8, 7-4)

There were 12 lead changes in the first half and going into the 2nd half, we were ahead by just 3 points at 44-41. We cracked down defensively in the 2nd half, allowing the Wildcats to score just 21 points, and steadily pulled away to finish with a 74-62 win. SG Lonnie Robertson poured in 25 points and had 4 steals. C Correy Parker had a solid game with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks. SF/PF Aubrey Johnson scored 9 points and PF Anthony Erwin had 8 points and 8 boards. PG Mario Kelly injured his hand, but that shouldn’t keep him out of our next game.

Recruiting

We’re still making frequent contact with about 10 recruits, all SF’s. Each has shown at least some interest in Grambling, but that interest level is not yet strong in any of them. Our recruiting budget is now pretty darned low so we can’t be aggressive....in fact it's super low key.

This past week we made a scholarship offer to a 4-star recruit who remains available primarily because of his low GPA and SAT scores. He barely met our SAT minimum requirements, which are as low as there are in Division 1. So if he wants to play Division 1 ball, there's not a lot of other programs that can take him.

I don’t expect we’ll be able to fill our final scholarship until late March to mid-April. And unless we can generate higher interest levels (and that's difficult when there's so little money to spend), we may fail to fill it.
