A.C. Read - Coaching Legacy

Postby WarEagle13 » Mon Jul 29, 2024 4:22 pm

This dynasty will be beginning in the year 2000 with current modern-day conferences as reflected as of 2023 real conferences. Being from the state of Alabama I have decided to begin with a team from the state as I want to be able to recruit the southeast region and state of Alabama high schools that I am familiar with. The top options in the state would be to either go with Alabama or Auburn but would lend to a lesser of a challenge and as a new incoming coach, would rather start with a lower prestige team and try to work my way up. The other three in-state options would be UAB, Troy, or South Alabama. I have chosen to go with the UAB Blazers and hope my coach, being an Auburn alum can eventually find his way there to his dream job.

UAB Blazers
2000 Season

Coach A.C. Read is the new incoming coach with this being his first experience as a head coach. I am going to work more of a balanced plan offensively, with the preference of the spread offense with a run first fast, but not overly tempo aggressive footprint. We need a RB by committee group to take advantage of having a speedy scat back to work along with an inside power back. Receivers need to be big over the middle type receivers with good hands as a focus and the TE’s as balanced good run blockers with the ability to receive in the right situations. On defense, we will be an aggressive style 3-4 balance, utilizing the nickel back as either the fourth LB or moving into a 3-3-5 defense. Our preference is to have interior lineman that are gap stoppers to plug for the run, with speedy outside rushing ends to help in contain. Linebackers need to be fast, intelligent, and instinctual. Our secondary preference will be man coverage with tall, fast corners that can bump receivers off their routes early and safeties to play the field QB’s on the defensive side of the ball.

As our first line of business, we need to review our current roster and identify what quality players we have to fit our style we want to achieve. Based on findings, we are going to have to adjust and gameplan accordingly to utilize what we have to work with until we can get a couple years of recruiting under our belt for the styles we are after. As a pre-season review, we will list out by position where we feel we have players that can contribute and what we think we need to do to adjust for short comings.

Meet the Team – Roster for the upcoming 2000 UAB Blazers season:

(projected starters listed first) Name, class, hometown, OVR/Skill ratings

Quarterbacks –
Schooler, Paul (JR) Oxford, MS 76/78
Arland, Daniel (SO*) Louisville, KY 75/64
Ferguson, Brock (FR*) Mobile, AL 74/32
Ferrell, Mark (SO) Citronelle, AL 70/85
QB – This is a position we will need to recruit and bolster to match our style we want to go with. In a run first spread, ideally, we would like to have a dual threat type player, not necessarily a run first one though. Needs to be intelligent and quick mentally and on their feet. Currently Paul Schooler (jr) and Daniel Arland (so) are the front runners and in competition for the starting role while we are expecting both to play an integral part at the position throughout of first season.

Running Backs –
Bedford, Keaton (JR*) Eufaula, AL 88/100
Williams, Jestin (SR*) Carrollton, GA 87/100
Heath, Michael (SR*) Alamo, TN 86/95
Kemp, Cameron (SO*) Montgomery, AL 77/100
Dudley, Jewaren (SO*) Marianna, AR 76/67
Dykes, Bernard (SO*) Louisville, KY 76-60
RB – This is most likely one of if not the strongest position groups that we are stepping into. It matches and fits our style perfectly but will also need to be recruited heavily as we have two of the six players graduating after this year and both of these seniors look to be key in our plans offensively this year. Jestin Williams (sr) is our speedster with Michael Heath (sr) or inside power back. Keaton Bedford (jr) is a hybrid that will be beneficial in fitting into both roles. With Bedford’s abilities he quite possibly could beat out both seniors for the bulk of playing time at the position.

Fullbacks –
Ware, Lemanski (SO) Lanett, AL 72/85
Mead, Tony (FR) Bessemer, AL 72/78
FB – We have two underclassmen at this position, but this position is not a heavily used position in our offense and will not be in the future. Lemanski Ware (so) and Tony Mead (fr) will both have opportunities to try and work into TE roles for the future.

Wide Receivers –
McCants, Sylvester (SR*) Rolling Fork, MS 86/97
Berrian, Tyrell (SR) Lexington, AL 83/91
Stafford, Preston (SR*) Childersburg, AL 83/100
Brantley, Chandler (JR*) Fort Payne, AL 83/76
Bates, Antonio (SR) Cherokee, AL 82/95
Hollifield, Keon (JR) McCalla, AL 77/96
Barkley, Kelvin (SO) San Antonio, TX 77/93
Carter, Rodell (SO) Northport, AL 77/66
Slaughter, Derek (FR) Clinton, LA 76/99
Dailey, Chase (SO) Trussville, AL 76/65
WR – This is another position of strength but also one that will be depleted heavily at end of the year and have to recruit strongly for. We have four of the ten in the group graduating after this year. As a group, it is one that possesses good hands overall. The overall size of the receivers stands out as there is only one of the ten under 6’0”. All four seniors, Antonio Bates (sr) / Tyrell Berrian (sr) / Sylvester McCants (sr) / Preston Stafford (sr), look to be impactful with Chandler Brantley (jr) being optimized in the slot position.

Tight Ends –
Havens, Andy (SR*) Hueytown, AL 84/100
Mencer, Austin (JR*) Birmingham, AL 83/72
Accardo, Steve (SO*) Homestead, FL 74/62
Crawley, Sean (SO) Hoover, AL 74/47
TE – As a group, this position needs to be upgraded for better run blocking type players. While the two upper classmen, Andy Havens (sr) and Austin Mencer (jr) have good hands, as a group this area is relatively deficient overall.

Centers –
Olson, Marcus (SO*) Ashville, AL 77/75
Seahorn, Kerry (JR) Pensacola, FL 78/68
Swanson, Eric (FR*) Tupelo, MS 73/63

Guards –
Wright, Mario (SR) Huntsville, AL 83/84
Blair, Mike (SR) Simpsonville, SC 82/83
Bayhem, Montrez (SO) Hokes Bluff, AL 71/80
Wolcotts, Caleb (SO) Hoover, AL 71/72
McDaniel, Trenton (SO) Birmingham, AL 71/40
Decordova, David (FR) Oceanside, CA 66/62

Tackles –
Luker, Drew (JR*) Springville, AL 80/68
Newton, Daymond (SO) Midfield, AL 77/48
Davison, Nick (FR*) Calhoun, GA 75/48
Jensen, Mike (FR*) Nashville, TN 72/55
Ackinger, Stephen (FR) Dora, AL 68/79
Bourne, Joseph (FR) Homewood, AL 63/36
OL – In what appears to be the least experienced group on offense, it has eleven of the fifteen as underclassmen with the only two seniors graduating as the two starting offensive guards. They are a balanced group when it comes to pass or run blocking with the edge leaning in our favor for the run blocking result. Currently the starters look to be Center Marcus Olson (so), Guards Mike Blair(sr) and Mario Wright (sr), and Tackles Drew Luker (jr) and Daymond Newton (so).

Defensive Ends –
Edge, Terence (SR) East Point, GA 82/87
Forrest, Frantrell (JR) Irondale, AL 81/88
Marrero, Steven (SR*) Sugar Land, TX 79/100
Manley, Michael (JR) Miami, FL 79/100
Mitchell, Antoine (JR*) Saluda, SC 79/98
Boggs, Ramario (SO*) Bay Minette, AL 78/84
Pearson, Jamar (FR) Hamilton, AL 69/69
Jankins, Pierre (FR) Atlanta, GA 70/50

Defensive Tackles –
Turner, Mathias (SR) Daphne, AL 78/84
Pikes, Franklin (JR*) Sherwood, AR 78/80
Willings, Devin (JR) Panama City, FL 78/74
Calhoun, Gervin (SO) Alexander City, AL 67/62
Creel, Logan (SO) Danville, AR 65/98
Poole, Zackery (FR) Edison, NJ 65/77
Sharper, Bryan (FR) Parrish, AL 65/69
Gomer, Mike (SO) Milledgeville, GA 54/81
DL – In this group of sixteen, there are nine underclassmen and three seniors. The defensive ends are the overall older group and have decent speed and strength. The defensive tackles are deficient in strength as we would like to recruit to build up the size and strength in the middle. The projected starters are Terence Edge (sr) and Fantrell Forrest (jr) on the ends and Mathias Turner (sr) in the middle line. When a fourth down lineman is needed Franklin Pikes (jr), Devin Willings (jr), or Michael Manley (jr) could be utilized.

Linebackers –
Lankford, D.J. (SO*) Dacula, GA 82/74
Neal, Maxwell (SR) New Orleans, LA 82/78
Webster, Brian (SR) Jacksonville, NC 81/90
Hanniford, Elliiott (JR*) Philadelphia, MS 81/84
Sadler, Alfredo (JR*) Birmingham, AL 80/81
Reese, Dauntre (JR) Batesville, AR 78/88
Hennigan, David (JR*) Gadsden, AL 80/68
Hearse, Marcellius (SO*) Gordo, AL 78/75
Amarikawa, Ugande (SO) Missouri City, TX 70/78
Isabelle, David (FR) Montevallo, AL 71/43
LB – Likely the group that is the strength and backbone of the defense going into our first season. This is the more mature group with six of the ten being upper classmen but only two seniors graduating at seasons end. The heart of this group is D.J. Lankford (so) with Elliott Hanniford (jr), Maxwell Neal (sr), and Brian Webster (sr) playing larger roles for playing time. This is a speedy, good tackling group but undersized and not as strong as we’d like to see in the future.

Cornerbacks –
Phillips, Fernando (SR) Adamsville, AL 84/80
Guliford, Darrell (SR) Auburn, AL 82/98
Barnes, Jordan (JR) Hattiesburg, MS 81/74
Kenworth, Reshaud (FR*) Adamsville, AL 72/91
Trotter, Rogerick (SO) Prosperity, SC 71/70
Kimball, Darrion (SO) Dadeville, AL 72/42

Strong Safeties –
Watters, Jarell (SO*) Englewood, FL 81/68
McRae, Katrell (FR*) Sarasota, FL 77/69
Mayes, Eric (SO) Harrisonburg, VA 70/94
Curtis, Marquez (FR) Rogersville, AL 70/80

Free Safeties –
Crosby, Javon (SO*) Selma, AL 80/92
Brooks, Justin (JR*) Dothan, AL 78/95
Watters, Latrell (SO*) Englewood, FL 74/78
Farrior, R.J. (FR*) Pleasant Grove, AL 74/51

DB – Both projected starting corners are graduating so this CB position will be a highly recruited group going into the season. Both Darrell Guliford (sr) and Fernando Phillips (sr) should man the corners and have good size, speed, and agility to cover most of the receivers they will face this year. Jordan Barnes (jr) and Reshaud Kenworth (fr) will compete for competition as backups and the dime back in the dime package. The safety position is one of the youngest groups on the team only having one upper classmen in Jordan Brooks (jr). Brooks and Jarell Watters (so) are projected to start while Javon Crosby (so) and Katrell McRae (fr) are expected to compete for the nickel back slot.

Kickers –
Autheridge, Adam (SR*) San Antonio, TX 83/99
Ragland, Trey (FR*) Guin, AL 79/82

Punters –
Seitz, Jake (SR*) Vestavia Hills, AL 84/73
Wachtel, Jared (SO*) Bedford, KY 78/99
ST – Having a couple of seasoned players at both kicker and punter will lend well for the upcoming season but will need to be recruited for both as the backups are questionable fill-ins going past this season. Kicker Adam Autheridge (sr) and punter Jake Seitz (sr) will fill these roles. For the return men on kickoffs and punts, WR Sylvester McCants (sr) will fill both roles, with WR Tyrell Berrian (sr) and CB Darrell Guliford (sr) backing him up. McCants has great skill with great speed and superior agility and should be one of the leading return men in Conference USA this season.

Looking to the Future – Recruiting priorities for the upcoming 2000 UAB Blazers season:

For the upcoming season we are going to look at the total number of seniors by position and initially planning on targeting scholarships for those player replacements. We will prioritize by group and recruit availability for what fits our needs the best and go after those individuals. We will have eighteen players graduating and matching that number of scholarships to offer. The breakdown by position is as follows: 2-RB, 4-WR, 1-TE, 2-OG, 2-DE, 1-DT, 2-LB, 2-CB, 1-K, 1-P (9 offensive, 7 defensive, 2 special teams) The top priority position with the most losses is at the Wide Receiver position. All eighteen of these seniors will be instrumental in our plans this year so replacing them with key impact players will be essential. We will very likely be looking heavily in the transfer portal to fill immediate needs that we may deem necessary at some key positions such as QB, TE, OL, DL.

Our initial target list of recruits consists of the following by position:

What to expect - Season Expectations & Conference USA Projections for the 2000 season:

The 2000 season expectations for the UAB Blazers outside of the locker room are anything but high. Currently the national coverage for college football has them projected to finish middle of the road in Conference USA in the sixth position. The expectations are that the Blazers will provide a fun run first offense to watch, but the skepticism lays on the defensive side of the ball. The Blazers out of conference schedule is very favorable early in the season with their first three games out of conference playing host to South Alabama in week 2, on the road against Liberty in week 3, and at home against Georgia Southern in week 4. Week 5 is a bye week before playing the final nine weeks. The final out of conference game will be on the road in week 13 and will be their toughest challenge of the season against the LSU Tigers.

Conference USA this year looks to be one of the stronger non power five conferences. The national coverage for college football has the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs projected to win the conference with the Charlotte 49ers bringing up the rear. It will be telling to see if Louisiana Tech’s strong out of conference road schedule this year catapults them or becomes a weighted anchor.

Summer Training – Preparation to begin the Season:

The 2000 season is just about upon us. In preparation, we have created a training regiment by position groups to focus on the four key attributes : positional skills, physical training, athletic training, and film study. Each position will have a weighted scale of time to spend per each group. Each group will have a total weighted scale of 22 points between the four attributes, with the loan exception of a selected group of 13 players from the roster that we have an extra weighted point to 23 to apply based on their intensity, drive, from their work ethic rating.

Position Physical Athletic Film Total
QB 5 5 5 7 22
RB 6 5 6 5 22
FB/TE 5 7 5 5 22
WR 5 5 7 5 22
OL 6 6 5 5 22
DL 6 6 5 5 22
LB 5 6 6 5 22
CB 6 5 6 5 22
S 6 5 6 5 22
ST 7 5 5 5 22
WE 6 5 6 6 23

The high intensity WE training for summer is slated for:

QB – Ferguson, Brock
TE – Accardo, Steve
WR – Barkley, Kelvin & McCants, Sylvester
OG – Blair, Mike
OT – Davison, Nick & Luker, Drew
DT – Calhoun, Gervin & Willings, Devin
LB – Isabelle, David
SS – Curtis, Marquez & Mayes, Eric
FS – Crosby, Javon

Each coach, being myself as the HC, the OC and the DC assigned ourselves a key player to spend extra focus on to attempt to mold to our scheme and to better learn going into the season what limitations we might have with each. For the summer camp I worked with QB Daniel Arland. OC Coach Branson worked with QB Paul Schooler, and DC Coach Reese worked with LB D.J. Lankford.

The results coming out of spring were significantly positive in regard to us having several players that not only had improvements but were able to improve in multiple areas across their attribute spectrum. We had a couple of standout players in camp that have vastly improved their chances of working up the depth chart to see more playing time. Those being OT Nick Davison and DE Michael Manley . Both were absolute superstars in camp. One personal disappointment coming out of camp was OT Stephen Ackinger. He was a huge let down, and really question his desire to play football and remain on the team. We will try and work more with him and see where it leads over the first few weeks of the season. Other players of note that had exceptional summer training was FB Tony Mead and RB Keaton Bedford. Mead is working his chances to see more playing time at TE in the two TE formation for run blocking schemes. Bedford continues to separate himself above the two senior backs and currently looks to be our starting RB to begin the season.

Clock Strikes Zero – The season begins, Week 1

The moment has arrived, and it is one we’ve been waiting on for quite some time. In my first season as the head coach of the UAB Blazers we are ready to get it started. We have an open BYE week in this first one, but it does begin our first prep week to start getting ready to open our season in Birmingham against the South Alabama Jaguars. The expectations that we have put upon ourselves are high. Even though we have been picked to finish sixth in Conference USA, we fully expect to complete for a conference championship.

For the weekly layout, we will use the weekly schedule to outline our updates and reviews going into game weekend.

Sunday Review - Slate of games scheduled, Top 25 interests, games of note
Monday Review - Update on recruiting
Tuesday/Wednesday Review - Update on training/practice and current roster and injury status
Thursday Review - Depth Chart adjustments
Friday Review - Finalized game planning for upcoming opponent
Saturday Review - Post game press conference, game stat reviews / other games noted

Week 1 –
Sunday August 28, 2000 (Weekly Upcoming Games Preview)

This week’s slate of games will feature #9 Oregon (vs San Jose State) as the highest-ranking team to play. While there isn’t any ranked vs ranked games, Other ranked teams to play are #10 Texas A&M (vs Texas State), #19 Cincinnati (vs Ohio), #22 Baylor (vs SMU), and #24 Minnesota (vs Western Michigan).

Game of the week pick is going to be the in-state matchup between Colorado at Colorado State. Colorado State is favored in this game while playing in Fort Collins. Many pundits are picking the Colorado State Rams to be a team to watch that could break into the rankings and challenge Boise State for the Mountain West Conference while the Colorado Buffaloes are projected last in the Pacific 12 Conference.

Conference USA games this week has two inter-conference games to start the season. Charlotte will be traveling to take on Florida Atlantic and North Texas will be heading to El Paso to challenge UTEP. The only other CUSA team playing has UTSA traveling to Lubbock to face off against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Florida Atlantic will be the heavy favorite in their game while UTSA will be the heavy underdog in theirs. The UNT vs UTEP game has a close line with UTEP slightly being favored with the home field advantage.

Monday August 29, 2000 (Recruiting Updates)

This past week on the recruiting trail we interviewed several targets that we had identified as well as spending time making phones calls and text communications specifically to the early scholarship offer recruits expanding on our interest in them coming to UAB to fit into our plans. We made a quick jump to make offers to 16 recruits early only having 18 to offer this year. With us being a new staff coming in, we wanted to make every opportunity to go after high end recruits to fit our system with the knowledge of knowing many of these will have interest elsewhere. We very likely will review a few of these offers and where it makes sense, revoke a few to extend to other recruits more likely to sign with us.

Scholarships that are offered –

403 WR Cornelius, Jashon Fayette County HS Fayette, AL
Initial feedback is that we are an extreme longshot on signing him. His interest lies heavily in-state but with both Alabama and Auburn being high on his list.

449 CB Hughes, Taveras Ramsay HS Birmingham, AL
Shows interest in remaining in the region, but his interest lies heavily on higher prestige teams in higher prestige conferences. Will likely sign with an SEC team, but our chances will be very minimal.

612 LB Ralston, DeLeon Lowndes HS Valdosta, GA
Possibly may be our highest ranked recruit to have a shot at signing. He seemed very interested in talking with us and does appear to want to remain close to home in the region.

707 LB Fleming, Damaris Petal HS Petal, MS
Another long shot reach but he seemed happy that we reached out. He showed little interest in our plans. My guess is he is waiting on higher prestige interest and offers.

736 RB Sedricks, Alonzo Stuttgart HS Stuttgart, AR
We are making a heavy push for this kid as it is a definite need for our future. We feel like we have his attention and is very signable.

794 WR Camp, Kelvin Prattville HS Prattville, AL
Another long shot reach for us, but one we will push for significantly. Love his size at 6’5” and would fit well in our plans. An in-state recruit, we think if we push hard, we can compete for signing him.

796 OG Salmon, Degan Emerald HS Greenwood, SC
Another high impact position of need. Love his strength and agility, would fit nicely in the spread run first offense. He showed interest, but we feel our competition with in-state Clemson and South Carolina might waiver.

811 DT Pargo, Blake South Forsyth HS Cumming, GA
We will continue to push hard to sign him, but not getting a good read on his intentions or drive for what he is looking for. We could utilize his skills early on and will push him towards the ability to play early.

858 TE Jansen, Grayson Ravenwood HS Brentwood, TN
This is a big need for us to fill, but not getting a strong read on his interest. Will continue to push hard and drive the opportunity for early playing time.

892 CB Flowers, Kendall South Paulding HS Douglasville, GA
Really like this offer. He seems very interested in our program but is waiting to review all his options.

906 RB Saunders, Kenton Grissom HS Huntsville, AL
An in-state recruit that has a good option of signing with us. Only draw back may be our other offer to the higher ranked Alonzo Sedricks. He could hold out waiting and we also have other in-state and regional schools he has interest in.

972 DE McNamera, Jamari Murphy HS Mobile, AL
Seems very interested in us and has an extremely good personality. We would love to have him sign and be able to utilize his speed rushing on the edge.

974 OG Hagen, Rueger Carrollton HS Carrollton, GA
Another big push to sign with us having two graduating starting guards. The immediate need is there, and we need to keep heavy pressure on both him and Degan Salmon to sign. Was happy that we reached out.

983 QB Doran, Bradley Rossview HS Clarksville, TN
This may be our highest sought after push to sign. Love his speed and ability to fit in very well on our style of play. Great speed and agility with an above average arm.

1085 K Dorvis, Denny Homewood HS Homewood, AL
A local kid and pushing hard to sign. Pitching the opportunity to possibly start all four years if he signs. Has an outstanding leg for kicking distance.

1914 WR Langham, Santana Freeport HS Freeport, FL
Playing this offer on a hunch, we feel this recruit may be extremely under-ranked and under-valued. He is very happy with our offer and interest. His speed could develop to an elite status and has the potential to be a deep threat to opposing defenses. Good size at 6’3” as well.

Tuesday August 30, 2000 (Practice Updates & Roster Review)

The team has informed the coaching staff that they have selected the team captains for this upcoming season. Seniors RB Michael Heath, RB Jestin Williams, and P Jake Seitz were selected to represent the UAB Blazers. In a rarity, the team selected a punter as a captain but it proves to the character, involvement, and locker room presence any and all positions should have and make an impact for the younger group.

Also there have been fifteen players that are identified as possible red-shirt candidates by seasons end. This is an area we will likely attempt to limit any playing time for and utilize a training regiment to impact as much positional attributes as we can to utilize in the future. These players are:

(Pos, Name, Class, OVR/Skill)

QB Ferrell, Mark SO 70/85
WR Dailey, Chase SO 76-65
WR Slaughter, Derek FR 76/99 Looks to contribute to future plans
OG Bayham, Montrez SO 71/80 Looks to contribute to future plans
OG Decordova, David FR 66-62 Review progress to determine long-term future
OT Ackinger, Stephen FR 68/79 Review progress to determine long-term future
OT Bourne, Joseph FR 63/36 Review progress to determine long-term future
DE Jankins, Pierre FR 70/50 Needs to sharpen positional skills
DE Pearson, Jamar FR 69/69
DT Gomer, Mike SO 54/81 Review progress to determine long-term future
DT Sharper, Bryan FR 65/69 Review progress to determine long-term future
LB Isabelle, David FR 71/43 Needs to sharpen positional skills
CB Kimball, Darrion SO 72/42 Needs to sharpen positional skills
CB Trotter, Rogerick SO 71/70 Looks to contribute to future plans
SS Mayes, Eric SO 70/94 Looks to contribute to future plans

We have also utilized the week one bye week to keep the high intensity work ethic training on the same individuals that we had in the program this summer to try and gain another week of progress prior to placing them on the in-season training regiment.

The overall performance this week for individual progress was minimal, but hands drills seem to have an impact as we had several plavers show progress in these drills.

Friday September 2, 2000 (Game Planning for upcoming Opponent)

With the open bye week, we are still in the process of finalizing our Offensive and defensive game plans for the South Alabama Jaguars. Like us, South Alabama is not playing this week. Upon viewing their roster, we look to try and be a run heavy offense and, on the defensive side we will be prioritizing stopping the run as we expect them to try and be run heavy as well. More to follow in the upcoming week as we go through another week of practice and finalize our plan. Predominantly, we will be creating packages on the offensive side for Outside Run, Inside Run, RPO, Passing short, medium, and long, and a GL/short yardage package. The plan is to optimize personnel in each of those packages to incorporate their strengths as well as offering breathers to players in the skilled positions. We also will be creating the same type of packages on the defensive side for Run, Pass, Blitz. Each personnel package in the depth chart defensive pass plan to incorporate a man package and a zone package.
