Alasketball

Tempers flare

Postby Jake8005 » Sun Dec 01, 2024 4:45 pm

A trip to face Cal was not as successful as a 91-57 loss was never close, with the only thing of note being walk-on Frederick scoring 7 points in 4 minutes… straining his hamstring in the process.

Back on the plane again to head back to Alaska to face Southern Illinois. It was close at halftime with a 34-33 lead, but the home team pulled away in the second half to win 77-63. The star of the show by far was Eric Edwards, who scored 31 points. I think that’s a program high so far. Edwards is now averaging 17.9 PPG in 29 MPG on 46/40/78 splits.

Jason Alford still isn’t interested in us but at this point he’s the only recruit left in Alaska so we’re putting all our recruiting efforts into him.
Headed to sunnier weather to play Pepperdine, the good weather did not help, as 20 points from Eric Edwards could not stop an 82-59 loss.

The traveling just doesn’t stop, as it’s back to home to face Monmouth. Kent fouls out in the second half, and Smiley’s own foul troubles continue as he fouls out with a minute to go.

UAA couldn’t hit a buzzer beater, so the game goes to overtime, with a rotation of Vaughn-Edwards-Stokes-Barnes-Mason with Inyo Ryan coming off the bench.
Monmouth goes to the line in the dying seconds of overtime down 64-63

*clank*

The first free throw misses

*swoosh*

The second one goes in

Seawolves miss another buzzer beater… we’re off to OT2.

Mason Barnes grabs a defensive rebound down by 1 with 34 seconds left, and puts UAA up 72-71. But Monmouth hit a three-pointer to win.

Alaska Anchorage head coach Carlos Boozer was irate in the post-game press conference.

Boozer: "WE'RE NOT [redacted] DISCIPLINED!!!!! HOW DO YOU HAVE TWO [redacted] FORWARDS FOUL OUT!!!!!!"

Boozer had to be restrained and escorted out of the press conference room by the Seawolves SID.

Went from 4-1 to 5-4......

Trouble in Anchorage.

After the non-conference slate, here are the team's stats:

https://imgur.com/a/a5LxR9I

Edwards has been fantastic, and I'm starting to get worried that he may transfer out. Smiley has been great and leads the team in PER (23.7) and net rating (11.0).

Kent needs to step it up. Ryan isn't reliable yet, so he's all we got there.

Vaughn also could be better considering his recruit status. For a guy with 60 ball handling he sure does turn the ball over a lot.

Losing streak is improbably snapped

Postby Jake8005 » Tue Dec 03, 2024 7:24 pm

Conference play starts with a trip to sunnier weather, as the Seawolves take on the Long Beach State Beach. Still a funny name. What’s not funny is trailing 20-4 after 7 minutes.

While the score was only a 46-34 lead at halftime, the second half did not improve things for UAA, losing 89-60 to start Big West action, falling to 5-5. Only Smiley with 14 points hit double digit.

The Alaskans lost the center battle, as Mason (1-5, 4 points, 1 rebound) and Barnes (1-1, 3 points, 1 rebound) got outplayed by LBSU center Jamar Murphy, who shot 6-6 for 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Keeping with the theme of home-away-home-away etc.. the Seawolves head back to Alaska for their home conference opener. Things against Cal Irvine aren’t much easier, as they trail 48-36 and lose 83-66. Edwards again a lone bright spot with 19 points on 5-10 shooting.

The Seawolves hop on the plane down to face UC Santa Barbara. They keep it close but not close enough, as foul trouble troubles them (why so many fouls?!), slipping away at the end for a 66-52 loss. Edwards the only one in double digits (13).

Five losses in a row and six in even as UAA falls to 5-7 (0-3 Big West).

Back to Alaska, again, to face Cal State Bakersfield. AAAAAND a 32-9 first half deficit ensues. Wtf has happened to this team?! The Seawolves trail the roadrunners 39-20 at halftime, shooting 6-32 as a team. Damn.

But the Seawolves are making a comeback, and with 1:57 left in the second half a Herb Smiley and-one gives them the lead!! After another basket,  Cal State Bakersfield hits a three-pointer to send it to overtime. There, the Seawolves trail 67-64 with 14 second left… AND LUKE VAUGHN SCORES A THREE-POINTER TO FORCE ANOTHER
OVERTIME!! In the second overtime Alaska Anchorage prevails 78-72!!

Three players put up big points: Edwards with 19, Smiley with 18 and 17 (SEVENTEEN!!) rebounds and Vaughn with a triple-double of his own, 17 points and 11 assists.

After it was 32-9, UAA led the rest of the way 69-40.

The losing streak is snapped with an epic comeback, and the Seawolves are in the win column!

Back on the road to Cal St. Fullerton, a loss follows in a 88-69 defeat as a 51-30 halftime deficit could not be overcome.

A return to Alaska follows to play the Cal Poly Mustangs. 33-27 at halftime turns into a 77-58 loss and another losing streak, as Edwards again led the team in scoring, as he had 21 points.

On the recruiting trail I decided to just pitch location over and over to Alford as he values it and he’s the only recruit left to pitch anything to. Maybe that’s a better strategy than cycling through all the things to pitch.

The losing streak continues with a 65-58 loss at home to Cal St. Northridge. Plain and simple, this team just isn’t very good outside of Smiley and Edwards.

Following this up was a 94-56 loss away to UC Davis. Rough.

Still no top 30 Norton candidates. Unless Edwards makes it as a senior, UAA may not have one for awhile.

Edwards and not much else

Postby Jake8005 » Wed Mar 19, 2025 11:24 pm

Next is traveling to UC Riverside, where we will be missing Clint Kent due to a strained hamstring, so Inyo Ryan will come into the rotation. UAA trails 42-35 at halftime despite Smiley being a perfect 4-4 for 11 points. This deficit reaches 10 points, but suddenly it’s a tie game with 4 minutes to go despite Mason fouling out. But in the end the Seawolves lose despite a 23 point performance from Smiley and fall to 2-8 in the Big West.

Following this is a trip to face Cal State Bakersfield. Despite a deficit at halftime Alaska Anchorage kept it close, with it being a 45-44 game with 12 minutes to go. However from then on out CSUB led 34-20, winning 79-64 and dropping the Seawolves to 2-10 in the Big West. Ouch. Into Ryan did have a nice 4-8, 9 point game while Smiley had 17 and 13 for another double-double.

Finally we get Kent back… but now Barnes has a concussion. Of course.

This time Alaska Anchorage heads to even sunnier weather with a trip to Hawaii. This starts better, getting out to a 13-5 lead. However, Hawaii comes back to lead and it’s a 41-41 game at halftime, with Edwards having 21 points in 17 minutes in the first half. In spite of 32 points from Eric Edwards, who is averaging nearly 18 PPG

Back to California to face UC Irvine, and again the Seawolves comes out strong. This time they take the lead to halftime, as an 18 point first half from Edwards puts Alaska Anchorage up 32-28. The second half was good another for a win, as a 66-61 triumph with 31 points from Edwards put the Alaskans back in the win column.

Finally it’s back to Alaska for a showdown with the UC Davis Aggies. Despite a 2-9, 5 point game from Edwards, the Seawolves lead at halftime 38-36, as Clint Kent has scored 10 points in the first half. This lead expands after halftime as Alaska Anchorage won 83-77 despite a poor performance from Edwards (3-10, 10 points). It was Kent who starred in a 8-10 19 point performance, with Mason, Smiley and Vaughn chipping in with 15, 14 and 13 points.

Staying at home UAA faces, UC Riverside and are down 36-32 at halftime with Mason being the best player, going 6-6 for 12 points. Despite the Seawolves taking a lead in the second half, the Highlanders ultimately prevailed 70-67. Mason had 18, Edwards had 15 and Smiley had 13.

Jason Alford commits to Long Island. He tells us “I’m sure you’ll be able to use the scholarship for another great player. Well Jason we can’t. You were the last Alaskan recruit left.

Following this is back on the road for a matchup with the Cal Poly Mustangs… which did not go well. A 49-28 halftime deficit doomed UAA, who fell 90-68 despite 24 points from Edwards.

We have three more games after this until the conference tournament:

@ Cal State Northridge, and games at home against Long Beach State Beach and the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.

The Cal State Northridge game starts really well, leading 42-34 at halftime. However despite going up by more than double digits in the second half, the Seawolves get into foul trouble and choke away the lead away and lose 75-69. Edwards had 19 while Vaughn had 14.

For the final home stand of the season, Alaska Anchorage begins hosting Long Beach State. Despite being down they finish the half scoring 11 of the final 14 points and take a 41-33 lead to the locker room. This lead expands in the second half and UAA wins 93-71, letting every walk-on get in. Edwards had 29, 6 and 4, while Smiley had 18 and 8. Stokes scored 17 as well.

Wrapping up the regular season against UCSB, UAA leads 32-25 at halftime and finishes the win win off in the second half, with both Edwards and Mason having 17. Smiley may have only had 2 points, but continued to excel on the boards with 9 rebounds. Next up is the Big West Tournament!

None of our players declared for the draft.

It's Alaska Anchorage vs Hawaii in the first round of the Big West Tournament at the Honda Center in Anaheim California. Despite taking a lead, the Seawolves trail at halftime 32-27. They get the lead back but give it up again, and their season is over with a 65-58 loss. Thus also brought to an end the great career of Herb Smiley, who scored 954 points and 582 rebounds in 91 starts/92 games while playing SF, PF and C.

Alaska Anchorage finished 10th of 11 teams in the Big West, going 11-19 (6-14) and 307 in the NET.
Head coach Carlos Boozer was asked at a post-game press conference how they can improve next year

Boozer: Well it’s on me. I didn’t recruit well for a few years and it’s showing. We’re starting to get better there. But we need to keep getting better at everything we do. Luckily I have a great AD who supports me. I look forward to being better next year.

Eric Edwards was named first team All-Conference at guard, while Smiley was on the second team at forward. But what plagued the Seawolves was outside of them, they just didn’t have much.

Player stats

Mason    30    30 25.1    8.8   3.7  1.5     49/X/52

I guess Mason was our third best player, but that's not saying much. We are going to need to get deeper as Kent was horrible off the bench, although Ryan was surprisingly solid and Barnes was fine. Vaughn showed flashes and could distribute.

Well. We did meet our season goal of not finishing last in the conference, as last place won four conference games and we won six.

More funds for the budget were requested, but AD says results don't warrant that. Ouch. But truthful.

None of our players transferred!!
A player we once recruited, Marcus Leep, is in the portal as he has left Michigan State after two years on the bench. However his top choices are Louisville, Ohio State, Syracuse, Gonzaga and Maryland. So I doubt we get him, but we’ll try. Probably fruitlessly.
Shawn Wright is also in the portal after starting two games at Gonzaga as a freshman. Top choices are Maryland, Baylor, New Mexico State, Northern Iowa and Belmont. Maybe we have a chance but probably not.
John Hunter is another Alaskan in the portal. He’s started 57 games in two years at Wyoming, averaging 8.6 points. His top choices are Iona, Montana, Rutgers, Loyola Chicago and George Mason. Hoping we can get him.
Keep went to South Florida, Hunter went to UNC Greensboro and Wright went to Buffalo. We will have 9 scholarship players this year.hs
And our lineup for this year

Starting lineup:

Luke Vaughn SO. Houston, AK. PG 6'5 199 lbs. 1.5 overall/4 potential
Eric Edwards JR. Juneau, AK. PG 6'3 210 lbs. 2.5/3.5
Travis Stokes R-JR. Fairbanks, AK. SF 6'6 202 lbs. 1.5/4
Deon Williams FR. Anchorage, AK. SF 6’8 235 lbs. 4/5
Corey Mason JR. Eielson AFB, AK. C 6'9 263 lbs. 1.5/3

Bench

Subs:

Inyo Ryan SO. Palmer, AK. PG 6'2 186 lbs. 0.5/3.5
Clint Kent JR Eagle River, AK. SF 6'8 202 lbs. 1/2
Jason Barnes SO. Eielson AFB, AK. 6'10 267 lbs. 1/2
Shannon Fuhs JR. Palmer, AK. 6’8 236 lbs. 1/3

Walk on

Jacob Cox SR. Kenai Central, AK. SF 6'4 234 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)
Erick Frederick SR. Seward, AK. PF 6-7 238 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)
Lincoln Huge JR. Anchorage, AK. C 6-10 253 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)
Eugene Tucker JR. Wasilla, AK. PG 6-2 187 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)
Tahric Bickerstaf JR. Anchorage, AK. SG 6'0 194 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)
Eric Burns SR. Eielson AFB, AK. SG 6'4 215 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)

Williams being so good is a pleasant surprise. He has 35 scoring, 10 higher than anybody else on the roster and no stats below 30 besides a 21 in drawing fouls. He also has the highest IQ, passing, offensive rebounding and defensive rebounding stats on the team and is second to Edwards in defense while being tied with him in the steals stat. Him and Edwards look to be our best players, and I’m hoping for Vaughn, Stokes and Mason to be improved as well. We have possibly upgraded on Smiley while brining every other starter and bench player back, and also adding Fuhs. Walk on PF Tony Jaacks also left. A huge factor for us as well is none of our players are seniors, so we won't graduate anybody. Hopefully, we can keep players out of the transfer portal.

#304 SF 3 Star Dan Tarkanian 6’7 220 lbs. Fairbanks
#614 C 2 star Austin Swift 6’10 274 lbs. Sitka
#801 PG 1 star Brandon Dickerson 6’0 200. Palmer
#1363 SG 1 star Michael Fleming 6’1 171 lbs. Anchorage
#1476 PF 1 star Shane Haston 6’7 214 lbs. Fairbanks
#1506 C 1 star Donnie Hedrick 6’10 259 lbs. Juneau
#1583 PG 1 star James Croom 5’5 160 lbs. Seward

While we have no seniors, our five juniors are a PG, three SF's and a center, so we will target those things. I am not sure about Fleming as I hate short SG's and Croom as he is 5'5.

Tarkanian will be pursued hard but may be difficult to get. Swift Could be very good, and I'll go after the others. We have four scholarships available.

Every recruit is being pursued to some degree. We're watching film on them, going to their games and talking to them to figure out what they and their parents value.

Haston and Hedrick have Alaska Anchorage as their number one schools! Haston has "warm" interest while Swift, Dickerson and Hedrick are on "cool" interest. Tarkanian, Fleming and Croom are on "none". Expected that for Tarkanian, and the other two are the recruits I'm least interested in, so that is fine with me.

Everybody was hosted for a campus visit, as Dickerson, Swift, Hedrick and Haston enjoyed their visits, but Tarkanian, Croom and Fleming didn't really seem to.

The scholarship offers have gone out to Tarkananian, Swift, Dickerson and Haston. Maybe we can change Tarkanian's mind.

9/11

Anchorage, Alaska (AP)
- It was a great day for the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves basketball program, as head coach Carlos Boozer announced that three recruits had committed to play at UAA. C Austin Swift, PG Landon Dickerson and PF Shane Haston all will be lining up in green and gold at the Alaska Airlines Center next winter.

Swift is the headliner of the class, as the 6'10 two star center is the 427th ranked prospect in the nation, and the 67th best center. Starring at Sitka High School in Sitka, Alaska, Swift averaged 13.5 points, 1.9 assists, 6.6 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.3 steals per game for the Wolves. Swift projects as a two-way player as both a prolific insider who's not afraid to put the ball on the floor and try and get to the basket and is a solid defender in the paint.

Swift grades out as: B- overall, B- defense, C athleticism, A+ inside shooting, C- outside shooting, F free throws, B- scoring, C passing, D ball handling, C+ rebounding, C+ shot blocking, D+ stealing.

Brandon Dickerson is set to be the heir apparent to Eric Edwards/Inyo Ryan at point guard. Standing at 6'0, lbs. Dickerson is a one star recruit ranked 1104th nationally out of Palmer, Alaska, having averaged 15.9 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 0.0 blocks and 1.2 steals per game for Colony High School, the rival high school to Palmer High School, who he faced with Inyo Ryan and Shannon Fuhs being on the other side.

Dickerson is a jump shot shooter who stays on the outside and is great at knocking down threes while also handling the ball and being able to play okay defense despite his short stature.

Dickerson grades out as: B- overall, C+ defense, C+ athleticism, D+ inside shooting, A outside shooting, C- free throws, B+ scoring, C+ passing, B+ ball handling, D+ rebounding, F shot blocking, D+ stealing.

Haston, who had a long-time interest in the Seawolves program, rounds out a great recruiting class for UAA. The 6'7 power forward out of Lathrop high school in Fairbanks Alaska (same HS as Travis Stokes) averaged 12.5 points 1.7 assists, 6.6 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. Haston is primarily a post player who loves to try to take the ball to the basket but also looks comfortable stepping out and shooting threes

Haston grades out as: C+ overall, D- defense, BI athleticism, A inside shooting, D outside shooting, D- free throws, C- scoring, C+ passing, C ball handling, C- rebounding, C- shot blocking, D+ stealing.

The Seawolves have one scholarship left, primarily chasing 6'10, 259 lb. C Donnie Hedrick of Juneau-Douglas High School in Juneau, Alaska, alma mater of point guard Eric Edwards and head coach Carlos Boozer. Hedrick is a one star recruit, the 1540th ranked recruit nationally, and is a strong inside shooter who loves to try and take the ball to the basket.

Other top uncommitted recruits in the state of Alaska are 6'7 220 lb. SF Dan Tarkanian (ranked 338th nationally), 6'1 171 lb. SG Michael Fleming (#1431) and 5'5 160 lbs. PG James Croom (#1602), though none feel likely to be Seawolves.

Haston may redshirt next year due to how many players that could play at PF, and Hedrick definitely would. Want to make that something we start doing going forward as this program will really need to have older teams due to the way recruiting is. The only time that has happened was the first year when Stokes was a freshman, letting him have two years of starting/playing left now.
