DDSCB25: Superstar

7/17: We offer to 3 guards and 4 bigs.

8/7: Wade Brow is #17 on the Norton list.

“I really think we should get married.”

“It doesn’t make sense, Jess. You live in North Carolina and I live in CT.”

“We can live together from early April until late August and we’ll find ways to see each other the rest of the year.”

“It’s too soon. Let’s keep it like this for awhile. Maybe the UConn job will open up. I mean Coach Calhern is 72.”

8/15: Von is back in CT as the football preseason is about to start. She’s back to work. We text every day and phone almost every day but I miss seeing her.

9/11: We lose a guard.

9/18: We get 4, lose 2. We get 2 guards and 2 bigs.

Competitive schedule.

9/25: We get 2 bigs, lose a guard. We still need a guard.

There aren’t any guards we want so we’ll save the scholarship.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We’re better than last year inside and we have our starting backcourt returning.

We change our minds on recruiting and go after a C.

10/9: We get the C but he’s iffy on hitting our SAT score.

Von managed to get here for a couple of days during the week. It was great to see her.

11/14: We start tomorrow. Here’s the lineup:

Senior Wade Brow is back at the Point. He may be our best player.

Junior Fred Jeff is back at SG. We’d like him to score a little more.

#3 guard is soph Pete Turr. We don’t lose much when he comes in. Senior Tod Hart has never really been the player we hoped he’d be.

Senior Jon Aker is back at SF. He’s a solid player.

Senior Ken Star, a transfer from Boston College where he was a three year starter, is at PF. He does everything well.

Junior Marc Wils is a transfer from Texas. He has looked very good in practice.

Soph Al Deay is a transfer from Florida. He looks really good. Frosh Len Rain would start on a lot of teams. Senior Pat Fore is a good rebounder.

We start with Arkansas, here. Not much to tell as this is their opener, too.

11/15: We’re ranked #14. How good are we? It all depends on the front court. I KNOW we’re good in the back court.

Slow start for both teams. Up 5 after 10. 34-31 at the half. 10 points for Aker. +12 for the bench. +12 in the paint. But both Star and Wils got in foul trouble early. Good bench play from Pat Fore helped.

Close early. We’re getting out rebounded but we’re turning them over. Up 5 with 10 to play. We get the lead to 10. Big lead late.

71-58. 19, 10, 4 blocks for Aker, 12, 8, 3 steals for Wils despite foul trouble. 10, 4, 5 for Brow, 11, 7 for Fore. +18 in the paint and we caught them in RBs, 41 for each team.

Good start to the season against a decent team.

11/17: #10 Baylor, 1-0, is here. They can play.

11/18: Close early. Up 8 after 10. They catch up. 29-31 at halftime. We shot 27.3%. 10, 7 for Brow. 12 TOs, not good! -18 in the paint but +13 RBs.

Close early. They go on a run. Down 12 with 10 to go. We’re not making shots. Way behind late, shooting 24.6%.

59-82. We shot 29.4%. Brow had 16, 9, and 4 but he didn’t get much help. We got beat both inside and outside but it was mostly about poor shooting.

“What do you think, Kip?”

“It’s way too early to make any real assessments. Your front court needs to learn to play together. Two new guys starting means that will take some time.”

11/21: #2 ranked Kansas, 3-1, is here. They’re very good, especially on D.

11/22: Close early. Up 2 after 10. 44-41 at halftime. 18 for Brow. Only 2 TOs.

They catch us and it’s back and forth. They go on a run. Down 11 with 10 to play.

73-83. They beat us badly inside. 27, 3, 3 for Brow, 13, 5 for Star, 11, 8 for Rain. Wils played 11 minutes before fouling out.

11/24: At 3-0 DePaul. We think we can beat them if we play well.

11/25: Back and forth. Down 2 after 10. Jeff is hot. 45-44 at the break. 17 for Jeff. Wils picked up 2 fouls in 2 minutes. I gave him hell. Brow has 3 fouls.

Close early. Up 5 with 10 to play. Double digit lead late.

96-85. A much needed road win. 24, 6, 5, 4 for Jeff, 21, 8, 2, 3 for Star. 7 TOs.

“So we’ll get married in April.”

“Yes, Jess. As soon as possible after the Final Four. Then we can be together for about 4 ½ months.”

“Awesome. Do you want a big wedding?”

“No. I have no family at all. Something small. If you want your parents and your Uncle Kip there that’s fine but not a big wedding. Oh, I’m not going to stop working.”

“I didn’t expect you to. That’s up to you. I’d never try to stop you from having a career. What about kids?”

“We both want kids but no kids until we’re living together for the whole year.”

“We’ll probably need a nanny given how busy we both are.”

“Yes, but I want both of us to be very involved with our kids. I didn’t really have parents and I don’t want it that way for my kids.”

“I agree!”

Good lead early. Up 14 with 10 to go.

95-80. 19, 8, 3 for Aker, 16, 4, 8, 5 for Brow, 15, 4 for Star. Good bench play. 13 fewer TOs. +20 in the paint. Maybe the best the front court has looked.

12/5: 5-3 Houston is here. They’re good outside.

12/6: Close early. Up 7 after 10. We go on a run. 58-40 at the half. 15, 0, 6, 3 for Brow, 15 for sub Pete Turr.

We get it to 20. Up 18 with 10 to go. Big lead late.

88-67. 22, 4, 8, 4 for Brow, 15 for Turr, 13 for Jeff.

12/12: 4-5 Villanova is here. They have a good backcourt.

12/13: Back and forth. Up 5 after 10. 34-33 at the half. 10, 5 for Star.

Close early. Down 5 with 10 left. Foul trouble in the back court.

78-76. Aker his a 16 footer in the last second. 20, 10 for Star, 15, 5, 4, 3 for Brow.

“What if you don’t get the UConn job?”

“That’s pretty much a done deal. I spoke to the A. D. just last week and he told me again that when Coach Calhern retires I’m his man.”

Headed for the Battle 4 Atlantis. We’re the #1 seed. We face #8 seed North Dakota ST, 3-6. This is a team we should beat.

Close early. Up 8 after 10. Double digit lead late. 44-29 at halftime. 12, 2, 3 for Brow, 10, 4, 2, 3 for Aker. Only 2 TOs.

We get it to 20 early. Up 30 with 10 left. A real blowout.

85-55. We led by as many as 43. 17, 2, 7 for Brow, 18, 9 for Star, 16, 5, 3, 3 for Aker. 7 TOs, +20 inside.

#4 seed Minnesota, 7-1, in the semifinals. They’re good inside.

12/14: They take a quick lead. We come back. Down 2 after 10. 34-34 at the half. 9 each for Brow and Aker. We’re shooting 33.3%. Close early. Up 3 with 10 left. We’re still shooting poorly.

76-82. We shot 34.7%, 4-19 on threes. 20, 7, 3 for Aker, 17, 7, 8, 3 for Brow, 14, 6 for Star.

A VERY disappointing loss.

“We need to play better D.”

They lead early. Down 8 with 10 to play. They go on a run.

91-93. We made a tremendous comeback but Brow missed a three at the end. 26, 3, 9 for Brow, 15, 2, 4, 4 for Jeff. +20 in the paint, 10 fewer TOs, but they made 16 threes. Poor outside D did us in.

We end pre-conf play at a disappointing 6-4.

Brow leads us in scoring with 17.4. He gets 6.4 assists. 13.4, 6.6 for Star, 12.5, 5.9 for Aker.
