Game #15

Postby randy » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:10 pm

1/6/94: Sam Houston St (10-3, 1-0) @ Texas Arlington (8-6, 0-1)

Pre-game Notes
1. Primary scorers are their 2 and 3, although a bunch of players are contributing between 5-7 pts. Another team that likes to shoot 3s, but makes only 30% of them. Turns the ball over quite a lot, with the worst OTO% in the conference
2. We'll stick to man, single coverage on everyone. They prefer to slow things down, so we'll try to quicken up the pace a bit to throw them off.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 75%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: Man to Man / 7
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 8
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 9/8
5. Off Pace / Focus: 5 / Heavy Inside
Tip off (1st Half)

15:57, Up 6-4
They were called for 5 fouls already, but we're not hitting our FTs (2-5)

12:22 Down 8-9
We're not getting the ball inside. Moving Cook to 4. Granville has 2 fouls

5:06
Up 21-16
Both teams shooting poorly. Our TO advantage (-4) seems to be the slight difference. Cook has only 1 pt

Halftime, Up 32-22
Yes we're up, but I feel they are controlling the tempo of the game.

Notes
1. They are shooting 38%; ours is not much better at 41%
2. We'll try to get more points on transition to speed things up
Start of 2nd Half

Adjust Def Reb intensity: -1 (to allow more fast break opportunities)

18:41, Up 36-22
2 quick fouls on Granville; he has to sit again with 4 fouls. His backup, Johnson, is having a horrible game turning the ball over. I will try Coulibaly to man the point

15:41, Up 42-22
They are still scoreless in the half.

9:43, Up 52-29
Cook has a double-double 11 and 13

5:11, Up 56-34
They are bricking in 3PT shot attempts, going for 1-14. I dont see them coming back. I took the 3 Cs out.

Final score: Sam Houston St - 61, Texas Arlington - 47

[B]Box Score
Coulibaly 15, 5, 3
Cook 13, 14, 1 (*)
Carr 8, 2, 2
Majerus 7, 4, 1
Johnson 7, 5, 3
Griffin 6, 5, 1
Belton 3, 3, 1
Granville 2, 0, 0 (played only 7 mins)

Other Notes
1. We have 4 fast break pts in the 1st half, and 14 in the 2nd; the halftime adjustments must have worked.
2. They hit only 2-17 from 3PT. We got lucky on this; if they shot 35% from 3PT (which is reasonable for most teams), it would have been a different story
3. ISR = 1.3

Game #16

Postby randy » Fri Mar 08, 2013 4:05 am

1/10/94: Sam Houston St (12-3, 2-0) @ Texas San Antonio (5-10, 0-2)

Pre-game Notes
1. They lost their first 2 conference games, but they were close games (one was in OT). In both losses, they had 40+ rebounds per game, so we have to make sure we limit them on the boards. They might run more 5-out sets, to take away our big men from the basket.
2. Their starting PG is the only player averaging in double figures (13 ppg). We'll stick to man, single coverage on everyone.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 75%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: Man to Man / 7
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 8
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 10/9
5. Off Pace / Focus: 5 / Favor Inside
Tip off (1st Half)

14:19, Down 8-11
Both teams trading turn overs (2 each). Cook scored all our 8 pts. Their 4 scored on a 3, so yes, they like to play outside even their big men. Carr has 2 PFs.

9:08, Up 19-14
We're shooting well (57% FG), but the fouls our mounting against us. Cook also has 2 PF so he's on the bench together with Carr.

6:54, Up 28-16
We go on a run, which forced them to call a time out. Everyone is contributing both on offense and defense. I am pleased, but reminded the team not be complacent..

2:55, Up 32-23
They hit 2 consecutive 3s. I called time out. I am tempted to bring back Carr and Cook on the floor, but decided not to take a risk

Halftime, Up 42-25
A strong finish to end the half.

Notes
1. My seldom used SF Jonathan Smith came up big with 8 pts in 10 mins. Carr meanwhile is scoreless, playing only 6 mins due to foul trouble.
2. We did a good job passing the ball; 15 assists on 17 FGMs.
3. They continue to play outside, which allowed us to dominate the paints; 14-4 advantage on inside points
4. Granville has 4 tos. I may have to play Johnson more
5. We have limited them to only 12 rebs thus far
Start of 2nd Half

I won't adjust the rebounding intensities, to continue limiting their rebounds. I'll start with Johnson at 1 (instead of Granville)

18:41, Up 46-35
Our shooting got cold. I'll shift to Heavy Inside.

11:24, Up 48-39
We are still cold; our outside shots are not falling, and we have difficulty gettting the ball inside due to their 2-3 defense.

7:07, Up 58-49
Granville fouled out immediately, after playing only 2 mins to give Johnson some rest. Switching back to Favor Inside.

Realizing our offense is having an off day today, we will rely on defense for the rest of the game. Increasing def intensity to 9, and switch to 1-2-2 zone defense. Increased Press frequency to 10.

3:03, Up 62-56
They clawed their way back, and I called time out to stop their momentum.

2:40, Still 62-56
Coulibaly missed a J, they rebound, and we were called with another foul. We're now on penalty. 1-1 situation

Hits both. Up 62-58

I put in Majerus for Griffin, for offensive purposes.

Cook settled for an outside. Miss again. They rebound. Cook has not scored since around the 15 minute mark in the first half

They turned it over.

2:07, Up 62-58.

We turned it over as well, and they hit us on the break. I called another time out. We led by as many as 21 back in the 1st half, and is now down to 2!

1:44, Up 62-60

Coulibaly is exhausted, and has not rested in the 2nd half due to Granville's quick exit. I'll give him a quick rest, putting in Smith. It's a tall line up we have there (1G, 4F). I called for a pick and roll between Carr and Cook

Carr missed a jumper. They rebound

They turned it over for the 19th time in this game.

1:15, Up 62-60
I didn't call time out, but shouted to them to slow things down

Another missed J, this time by Majerus. They rebound. They called a time out

0:54, Up 62-60

They got a shot attempt inside the paint. Majerus blocks the shot. They recover. Shoots again. Another block by Majerus! We recover the ball. Brought the ball to the front court. I called time out.

0:27 Up 62-60
We don't need to score. Their main problem now is that they are not yet still in the penalty. Brought back Coulibaly, for ball handling and later on, FT shooting. We'll run a 5-out set

They foul, but only their 4th as a team. 0:23 left.

Another foul (5th). 0:22

6th team foul. 0:17. The game clock is agonizingly slow, at least from my perspective

They foul Smith. Penalty. 1-1 situation. Smith is 3-3 from the line so far

Hits the first. Hits the second. Clutch FT shooting! Now, it's a 2 possession game. They called a time out

0:14, Up 64-60
We'll continue to play 1-2-2. We can give up an inside basket, as long as don't give up a foul

They elected for a 2-pt basket. But only 0:02 left. We quickly ran away with the ball, and they didn't had the chance to foul us

Final score: Sam Houston St - 64, Texas San Antonio - 62
A gritty and ugly road win. Another poor 2nd half performance for us.

Box Score
Coulibaly 13, 6, 2, 4 tos (*)
Smith 10, 1, 2 (14 quality mins off the bench, not to mention the 2 FTs to seal the win)
Carr 9, 1, 1
Cook 8, 5, 1
Majerus 7, 1, 2
Griffin 6, 7, 2
Johnson 6, 1, 7
Granville 5, 4, 4, 4 tos, fouled out
Belton 0, 2, 1
Hatter 0, 0, 0
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 43-53%
REB: Even
TO: -7
Paint: -6 (-16 in the 2nd half!)
2nd Chance : +5
Fast Break: +4
Other Notes
1. We got outscored in the 2nd half 22-37. If not for their 19 turn overs, we would have most likely lost this game.
2. We won, but our most glaring weakness got exposed today, esp in the 2nd half. They clamped down on our inside play by going mostly on 2-3 zone. Compounding the problem is the fact that we can't hit outside shots during the 2nd half. I am sure our future opponents will review this game over and over again.
3. ISR = 1.0 (same amount of inside and outside pts)

Score more

Postby randy » Fri Mar 08, 2013 4:17 am

During our last 4 road games (2 non-conference and 2 conference), our scoring average was less than 64 ppg. We need to find other ways to score, in case we can't establish our inside game and our outside shots are not falling.

One way is to increase fast break opportunities. I should have decreased the def rebounding intensity during the 2nd half of the last game, but elected not to.

Lesson learned ...

This coaching thing is a process. that's what I love about coaching college hoops, or hoops at any level. It's extremely complex and there are tons of factors to consider. Basketball is the ultimate coach's game, IMO.

Game #17

Postby randy » Fri Mar 08, 2013 8:57 am

1/13/94: Nicholls St (10-6, 2-1) @ Sam Houston St (13-3, 3-0)

Pre-game Notes
1. Niccholls St is excellent at home (9-1) but woeful on the road (1-5). In 4 of their 5 road losses, they scored less than 60 pts. If we score 70+ pts, we would most likely win.
2. Prior to the start of the conference games, their 2nd leading scorer got suspended due to academics. This further compounds to their scoring woes. They rely heavily on their bench (33 ppg) for their points.
3. Sam Houston St and Nicholls St are 1-2 rank in steals in the conference. Both teams like to press a lot. The team which takes care of the basketball, will have the better chance of winning.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 75%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: Man to Man / 7
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 8
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 9/7 (we'll run a bit more during transition)
5. Off Pace / Focus: 4 / Favor Inside
Tip off (1st Half)

13:17, Up 14-11
We have 5 team fouls; Granville has 2. We have not attempted a single FT; they made 5-5 thus far. Carr has hit 2 3s

12:09, Up 16-11
Our starting back court both have 2 PFs. I will go with a big lineup, switching Carr to SG. Smith played well the last game, so I'll give him minutes today

9:54, Up 22-16
We got our 8th team foul already. I yelled at the refs. I got a technical

5:49, Up 36-23
Carr continue to wax hot with 12 pts (5-6 FG). Cook is nearing a double-double (8 and 7).

Halftime, Up 43-42
They had a barrage of FTs towards the end of the half, due to the number of fouls called against us. Not wanting to get my 2nd T, I tried hard not to show my displeasure at the refs.

Notes
1. We're doing everything well (59% FG, 18 inside pts, +10 rebs,). But the story of half are as follows: they had 24 FTAs (making 18). 15 fouls called against us.
2. Cook and Carr has combined for 27 pts
Start of 2nd Half

I'm not sure what else is there to adjust, given that overall, we are playing well. The fouls are killing us!

15:47, Up 50-46
Fouls continue to pile. 4 on Coulibaly, 3 on Cook and Majerus. I've gone with a tall lineup with Carr at 2

11:44, Up 52-49
I have no choice but to lessen the defensive intensity, in order not to foul. I am hoping we can outscore them. Decreasing also the def rebount crash (now at 6). I am hoping we can outrun and out score them the rest of the game.

6:07, Up 66-56
We capitalized on their turnovers. I now have all of my starters back on the floor. All have 3 PFs, except for Coulibaly who has 4. We are on the penalty ... well, no surprise there.

5:10, Up 68-57
Granville fouled out. Good thing we have the lead .. otherwise, I would have thrown a chair in center court

2:47, Up 72-63
Looks like we are going to hold on. I will slow down the pace, and max out on def rebounding; getting possession is key now

Final score: Nicholls St - 68, Sam Houston St - 78

Box Score
Carr 21, 5, 2
Cook 19, 10, 3 (*)
Majerus 12, 3, 3
Johnson 10, 3, 6
Coulibaly 8, 5, 1
Griffin 4, 0, 1
Smith 4, 2, 1
Granville 0, 0, 4 fouled out (for the 2nd consecutive game)
Belton 0, 0, 0

Other Notes
1. They had 32 FTAs, making 24; we're 9-10. A total of 25 fouls were called against us; 12 on them. Difficult to get our transition game going (we only had 6 fast break pts), when the opposition is shooting lots of FTs

Game #18

Postby randy » Fri Mar 08, 2013 12:11 pm

1/13/94: Sam Houston St (14-3, 4-0) @ Lamar (9-8, 2-2)

Pre-game Notes
1. Their starting 2 is the conference's leading scorer at 17.5 ppg. He is also an excellent outside shooter, going at a 51% clips for 3-PT. I will switch Granville to guard him. No double team yet, but can change later during the 2nd half
2. My starting big men (Majerus - 6-7, 191; Cook - 6-8, 228) are almost always on a height and weight disadvantage with their counterparts. This time, we'll be facing a similar-sized front court, at least height-wise. Their starting 4 is 6-6, 228, while their starting 5 is 6-8 256. We'll try to go heavy inside at the start.
3. Both teams like to score; Sam Houston and Lamar are 1-2 in pts, not only in the conference, but in the entire association(*). Lamar has scored at least 85 pts in 7 games (3 of those games, they scored 90+), so they can score!
4. The key here is to establish our defense early.

(*) As a matter of fact, Central Arkansas is #3 in pts. How often can you have 3 teams from the same conference, with national ranks 1-2-3 in pts scored.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 75%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: Man to Man / 8 (higher than usual)
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 9
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 9/10 (control the boards early)
5. Off Pace / Focus: 4 / Heavy Inside
Tip off (1st Half)

15:52, Down 6-13
They can indeed score (5-7 FG). Their star SG has hit 2 3s already; we'll start doubling on him. The only positive for us is Cook taking it strong inside.

10:37, Down 14-26
They are putting up an offensive clinic on us. We need to step up on defense! That was my emphasis during the media time out. Cook has scored all of our pts.

5:48, Down 22-36
They are shooting 65%, and everyone on their side is contributing; their star SG actually has been scoreless in the past 10 mins, but his teammates continue to light it up. To makes matters worse, Cook and Carr are both on the bench with 2 fouls each

Halftime, Down 33-43
Coulibaly hits a 3 at the buzzer, to end the half. As bad as we played in the first 20 mins, we're still in this game; we were down by as much as 16. We just need to tighten up on defense.

Notes
1. Taking away Cook and Majerus' combined 24 pts, 9-13 FG performance, the rest of our team had 9 pts on 2-14 FG (14%). Coulibaly has 3 (the buzzer beater) and Carr is scoreless with 2 fouls. Someone else has to step up.
2. Ironically, we are getting beaten on the paint (12-16), which is supposed to be our strength.
Start of 2nd Half

I will switch to 2-3 zone. We face the risk of their star SG lighting it up form outside, but we need to take away their inside game. Also increased our def intensity to 9.

17:44, Down 35-51
They hit 2 3s. I called time out. Switched back to man; no double team.

15:21, Down 39-56
I went with a tall line up (1G, 4F). Maxed out on def intensity and press frequency. Will take another risk, this time lowering defensive crash board to 3; increased pace to 8

9:29, Down 48-68
Nothing working. Increased pace to 10. Switched to balance offense; hoping to get quick pts.

Final score: Sam Houston St - 66, Lamar - 87
We got out butts kicked in this game. No excuses.

Box Score
Cook 28, 8, 3. 9-13 FG, 10-12 FT
Majerus 13, 3, 2, 4 tos
Coulibaly 11, 5, 3
Smith 6, 3, 0
Carr 4, 4, 0, 2-9 FG
Granville 4, 4, 5
Griffin 0, 6, 0
Johnson 0, 0, 0

Other Notes
1. Not only that they won the pts in the paint battle, they also shot well from the outside (9-11 3PT).
2. Their star SG finished with 22 pts. He and Dana Cook are the early front runners for the player of the conference award.
3. ISR = 0.9

Postby randy » Sat Mar 09, 2013 3:27 am

1/20/94: Texas St (10-8, 2-3) @ Sam Houston St (14-4, 4-1)

Pre-game Notes
1. They don't score that much, but they don't don't give up pts either (64.4 opp ppg, 2nd in conference).
2. The only significant inside threat they have is their starting C. We'll double on him.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 75%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: Man to Man / 7
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 8
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 9/9
5. Off Pace / Focus: 4 / Heavy Inside
Tip off (1st Half)

15:51, Down 4-6
Carr has been a liability thus far. 2 fouls, 2 tos in 4 mins

11:27, Tied at 10
Cook has carried us with 6 pts. Coulibaly is ice cold, 0-5 FG. I'll do deeper into the bench; will field in seldom-used SG Sam Thomas.

8:50, Up 19-12
Cook continues to carry the team on his back, with 12 and 4, 6-6 FG. Thomas hits a 3 earlier.

Halftime, Up 34-22
Playing good defense thus far.

Notes
1. We have limited them to only 6 inside pts. We'll continue to double their C.
2. Cook and Majerus combined for 22 pts. Coulibaly and Carr are both scoreless.
Start of 2nd Half

No adjustments. Any help from the perimeter guys would be good though

15:55, Up 39-24
Cook has another double double, 16 and 10. Granville has 4 tos; he goes to the bench

7:27, Up 53-29
Continuing to play excellent defense; only 7 pts given up in the 2nd half so far. Bench warmers now starting to loosen up

4:03, Up 57-35
Clear the bench; slow down the game. Crowd gave Cook a loud standing ovation.

Final score: Texas St - 45, Sam Houston St - 61
Defense (and Cook) saves the day for us.
