Game #14

Postby PointGuard » Mon Jun 03, 2013 11:59 pm

Game #14; Jan. 2, 2015: Houston Baptist Huskies (4-9, 0-0) at CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (11-2, 0-0)

After losing their first 5 games this season, Houston Baptist has won 4 of their last 8, 3 of their last 5 and the last 2 games they’ve played. SG Aaron Renn leads them offensively with 14.8 ppg. We rate freshman PF Marion McCollum highly, but the Huskies have yet to play him in a game yet.

We click offensively and built a double digit lead in the first half, finishing with a 44-31 lead. We hit 47% of our FG attempts (incuding 50% of our 3’s), but we also let the Huskies hit 44% of their shots. Jerell Brown scored 11 and Marcus Evans added 10 for us.

We continued to cook offensively in the 2nd half, pulling away throughout the half even when our deep subs played extensively. Additionally, our defense came to life. We won easily and going away.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-84, Houston Baptist-47. CSU Bakersfield season record: 12-2; Great West record: 1-0 (1st place tie).

Scoring leaders: Jrl Brown-20, Evans-15, Lyde-10, Durham-8.

Rebound leaders: Jrl Brown-8, Saunders-5.

Assist leaders: Curry-7, Lyde-3, Dunn-3.

Player of the Game: SG Jerell Brown-20 pts, 8 reb, 2 assists.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SF/SG Marcus Evans-15 pts, 3 reb, 1 steal.

Other notes: We dropped in 48% of our shots and 62% of our 3’s. We held the Huskies to 32% shooting. We forced Houston Baptist to turn the ball over 15 times. I was very pleased that we only turned the ball over 6 times. We held a 35-33 rebounding advantage.

Game #15

Postby PointGuard » Tue Jun 04, 2013 12:03 am

Game #15; Jan. 5, 2015: CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (12-2, 1-0) at New Jersey Tech Highlanders (8-6, 1-0)

New Jersey Tech has won all 6 games of their games at home. They shoot well, but have turnover problems which I hope we can continue. They have 4 players averaging in double figures so we need to pay good defense against all of their players without focusing on any one player. New Jersey Tech has been our nemesis…we’ve won just 1 of 7 games against them during my tenure at CSU Bakersfield.

We fell behind 13-4 in the first 4-1/2 minutes as the Highlanders hit their shots and we did not. All 5 of New Jersey Tech’s starters had scored. The Highlanders continued to put it to us and midway through the half we trailed 27-8. We made a couple runs, cutting their lead to 10, but then they spurted ahead again at the end of the half to leave us in the doldrums by a 45-26 score at the break. They hit 50% of their shots, we could only manage 33%. They pulled down 21 rebounds to our 14. Marcus Evans was our top scorer with 9 points. I laid into the team at the half about their lackadaisical play.

Early in the 2nd half, nothing we did stopped New Jersey Tech, and they pulled away to a 26 point lead. We cut their lead to 67-52 with 6:44 left. We got with 13 several times but ultimately, we could never find a way to stop them and they pulled away for an easy victory.

Final Score: New Jersey Tech-86, CSU Bakersfield-66. CSU Bakersfield season record: 12-3; Great West record: 1-1 (3rd place tie).

Scoring leaders: Evans-20, Lyde-12, Jrl Brown-8.

Rebound leaders: Lyde-7, Saunders-6, Evans-5.

Assist leaders: Curry-4.

Player of the Game: New Jersey Tech’s SF Matt Cota-21 pts, 4 reb, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SF/SG Marcus Evans-20 pts, 5 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal.

Other notes: We let them hit 53% of their FG’s (and 46% of their 3’s), got beat on the boards 34-33, made 12 turnovers to their 10. We hit just 35% of our FG’s and 28% of our 3’s. To put it simply, we got out-played and got our butts kicked.

Game #16; Jan. 9, 2015: Utah Valley Wolverines (7-8, 2-0) at CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (12-3, 1-1)

We need to beat Utah Valley to avoid dropping 2 games behind the co-leader.

While our offense was hot and cold, our defense was steady throughout the first half. We took a 32-23 lead to the locker room. Our leading scorer was Jerell Brown with 13 points, but Randy Durham chipped in 10 points as well.

Our defense continued to dominate in the 2nd half allowing us to pull steadily away and win easily.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-74, Utah Valley-49. CSU Bakersfield season record: 13-3; Great West record: (2-1, 2nd place tie).

Scoring leaders: Jrl Brown-25, Durham-17, Evans-8.

Rebound leaders: Jrl Brown-9, Durham-6, Lyde-5.

Assist leaders: Durham-4, Lyde-3, Pastner-3.

Player of the Game: SG Jerell Brown-25 pts, 9 reb, 1 assist, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: PG Randy Durham-17 pts, 6 reb, 4 assists, 2 streals.

Other notes: Bouncing back from a bad loss, we hit 50% of our shots (including 50% of our 3’s) and held the Wolverines to 33% shooting. We only turned the ball over 9 times while Utah Valley had 14 turnovers. We dominated the boards 34-27.

Game #17

Postby PointGuard » Tue Jun 04, 2013 6:31 pm

Game #17; Jan. 12, 2015: CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (13-3, 2-1) at Seattle Redhawks (8-8,0-3)

Before the game we get word that New Jersey Tech has rolled over Utah Valley to remain undefeated in the conference. To keep from falling 2 games behind them, we need to win this game over Seattle. The Redhawks began the year well, but have lost 5 straight games including their first 3 in conference play. Seattle’s SG Adam Givens is scoring 21.5 ppg.

Defensively we stymied the Redhawks throughout the 1st half, holding them to 29% shooting (and 14% from 3 point distance). Meanwhile, we hit 50% of our shots, so even though Seattle out-rebounded us 18-16 and had only 6 turnovers (to our 8), we led the entire half and finished the first stanza with a 32-22 lead. Our top scorer was Jerell Brown with 11 points.

Seattle fought back in the 2nd half and took a 46-43 lead with 9-1/2 minutes left in the game. With a minute left in the game, Jerell Brown hit a 3 point shot from downtown to knot the game at 55-55. Seattle travelled with 45 seconds to go. Durham drove the lane, pulling up to sink a 5 foot jumper to put us ahead 57-55 with 32 seconds remaining. Seattle tied it with 21 seconds to play. We played for the last shot but were unable to sink it.

OT: Seattle took a 5 point lead with 2-1/2 minutes to go. We cut their lead but they reasserted it with 1;15 left. We called a time out and to set up a 3-point play for Jerell Brown. Even though the shot was contested, Brown hit the shot to decrease Seattle’s lead to 67-65 with just over a minute to play. We let Seattle’s center slip inside to put down a dunk, but Randy Durham hit a 3 with 45 seconds to go to make it 69-68. Seattle hit a baseline jumper to give them a 3 point lead with 32 seconds to play. Jerell Brown’s 3 was off the rim, but Mark Saunders put in the rebound to make it 61-70 with 22 seconds remaining. We intentionally fouled with 15 seconds to play, but their center made both free throws. Randy Durham’s 3 point shot rimmed out to end our opportunities.

Final Score: Seattle-73, CSU Bakersfield-70 (OT). CSU Bakersfield season record: 13-4; Great West record: 2-2 (2nd place tie).

Scoring leaders: Jrl Brown-30, Durham-16, Evans-8, Lyde-8.

Rebound leaders: Saunders-9, Lyde-5, Evans-5

Assist leaders: Durham-11

Player of the Game: Seattle’s SG Adam Givens-16 pts, 6 reb, 4 assists,2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SG Jerell Brown-30 pts, 4 reb, 2 assists, 1 steal.

Other notes: We outshot Seattle 41% to 40% (and 42% to 24% on 3’s), but lost the game because Seattle dominated the boards 46-33 and was awarded 17 free throws to our 2 and scored 11 more points than us at the line. Seattle’s SF Reginald Houston had a double-double (14 points and 13 rebounds). A disappointing loss for us.

Game #18

Postby PointGuard » Tue Jun 04, 2013 6:32 pm

Game #18; Jan. 16, 2015: North Dakota Fighting Sioux (7-10, 2-2) at CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (13-4, 2-2)

We played tough defense in the 1st half, holding North Dakota to just 27% shooting (and just 9% of their 3’s). We also out-rebounded the Fighting Sioux 25-18. Even though we only hit 34% of our shots, we took a 30-20 lead into the 2nd half. Our leading scorer was Jerell Brown who scored 8 points.

Our defensive intensity was sustained in the 2nd half, and we drew away to an easy win during which we played everyone on our bench extensively.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-69, North Dakota-43. CSU Bakersfield season record: 14-4; Great West record: 3-2 (2nd place tie).

Scoring leaders: Durham-13, Jrl Brown-8.

Rebound leaders: Saunders-6, Pastner-6, Jrl Brown-6, Lyde-5.

Assist leaders: Jrl Brown-3.

Player of the Game: PG Randy Durham-13 pts, 1 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SF/SG Marcus Evans-7 pts, 4 reb, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block.

Other notes: Our defense stymied North Dakota…they hit just 35% of their shots (and 16% of their 3’s), and made 24 turnovers. We hit 40% of our shots (35% of our 3’s) and had 14 turnovers. We held a 39-32 rebounding advantage.

Postby PointGuard » Tue Jun 04, 2013 6:33 pm

Game #19; Jan. 19, 2015: CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (14-4, 3-2) at Chicago State Cougars (6-12, 3-2)

We need to begin winning on the road in our conference games. Chicago State has just a 4-4 record at home, so this is a good time to get back on track.

We hit 59% to the Cougars 47% but only came out of the first half with a 41-39 lead. Randy Durham scored 8 points to lead us, but sat on the bench for much of the half with 2 fouls.

We scored the first 7 points of the 2nd half and we continued to scorch throughout the 2nd half. We opened a double digit lead, but Chicago State cut our lead to 5 with 54 seconds remaining. We held on to pull out the win.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-82, Chicago State-77. CSU Bakersfield season record: 15-4; Great West record: 4-2 (2nd place).

Scoring leaders: Jrl Brown-23, Durham-14, Lyde-12, Bryson-8.

Rebound leaders: Lyde-10, Jrl Brown-6, Pastner-5.

Assist leaders: Durham-4, Jrl Brown-3, Evans-3, Dunn-3.

Player of the Game: SG Jerell Brown-23 pts, 6 reb, 3 assists, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: PF Ali Lyde-12 pts, 10 reb, 1 assist, 1 block.

Other notes: We dropped in 52% of our shots while Chicago State hit 46%. We pulled down 33 rebounds to the Cougars 28. We turned the ball over 14 times and the Cougars committed 13 turnovers. Ali Lyde had a double-double (12 pts, 10 reb).

New Jersey Tech continues to dominate the Great West Conference with a 6-0 record.
