Game #17; Jan. 12, 2015: CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (13-3, 2-1) at Seattle Redhawks (8-8,0-3)
Before the game we get word that New Jersey Tech has rolled over Utah Valley to remain undefeated in the conference. To keep from falling 2 games behind them, we need to win this game over Seattle. The Redhawks began the year well, but have lost 5 straight games including their first 3 in conference play. Seattle’s SG Adam Givens is scoring 21.5 ppg.
Defensively we stymied the Redhawks throughout the 1st half, holding them to 29% shooting (and 14% from 3 point distance). Meanwhile, we hit 50% of our shots, so even though Seattle out-rebounded us 18-16 and had only 6 turnovers (to our 8), we led the entire half and finished the first stanza with a 32-22 lead. Our top scorer was Jerell Brown with 11 points.
Seattle fought back in the 2nd half and took a 46-43 lead with 9-1/2 minutes left in the game. With a minute left in the game, Jerell Brown hit a 3 point shot from downtown to knot the game at 55-55. Seattle travelled with 45 seconds to go. Durham drove the lane, pulling up to sink a 5 foot jumper to put us ahead 57-55 with 32 seconds remaining. Seattle tied it with 21 seconds to play. We played for the last shot but were unable to sink it.
OT: Seattle took a 5 point lead with 2-1/2 minutes to go. We cut their lead but they reasserted it with 1;15 left. We called a time out and to set up a 3-point play for Jerell Brown. Even though the shot was contested, Brown hit the shot to decrease Seattle’s lead to 67-65 with just over a minute to play. We let Seattle’s center slip inside to put down a dunk, but Randy Durham hit a 3 with 45 seconds to go to make it 69-68. Seattle hit a baseline jumper to give them a 3 point lead with 32 seconds to play. Jerell Brown’s 3 was off the rim, but Mark Saunders put in the rebound to make it 61-70 with 22 seconds remaining. We intentionally fouled with 15 seconds to play, but their center made both free throws. Randy Durham’s 3 point shot rimmed out to end our opportunities.
Final Score: Seattle-73, CSU Bakersfield-70 (OT). CSU Bakersfield season record: 13-4; Great West record: 2-2 (2nd place tie).
Scoring leaders: Jrl Brown-30, Durham-16, Evans-8, Lyde-8.
Rebound leaders: Saunders-9, Lyde-5, Evans-5

Player of the Game: Seattle’s SG Adam Givens-16 pts, 6 reb, 4 assists,2 steals.
Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SG Jerell Brown-30 pts, 4 reb, 2 assists, 1 steal.
Other notes: We outshot Seattle 41% to 40% (and 42% to 24% on 3’s), but lost the game because Seattle dominated the boards 46-33 and was awarded 17 free throws to our 2 and scored 11 more points than us at the line. Seattle’s SF Reginald Houston had a double-double (14 points and 13 rebounds). A disappointing loss for us.
