3/24/96: (5) #12 Sam Houston St (29-2, 12-2) vs (9) Purdue (18-13, 11-7)
Purdue has a team prestige of 64 (we're only 10). This is Purdue's 6th appearance in the Sweet 16. They have never won an NCAA championship, but has made the Final Four twice. This is Sam Houston's 2nd appearance in the Sweet 16
Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Fr SF Jamie Snyder (11.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg). No dominant scorer, but they have 7 players who is averaging at least 8 ppg. In their Round of 32 match against Towson, Jr PG Jerald Hedrick (a 5-5 pint-sized guard) made 6 3s.
4. We'll start with a 2-3 zone, and adjust accordingly. Also , Purdue has a small lineup - their tallest player on their regular rotation is Snyder who plays the 3. We'll use Favor Inside
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 50%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)
15:07, Up 8-4
We have 3 turn overs, while PUR has 4. Both of PUR's field goals were transition baskets, so we'll lower our off reb intensity to 7. PUR is missing their outside shots, so we'll continue the 2-3 zone
11:13, Up 13-10
PUR is 0-6 from 3PT. On offense, our big men have not really dominated. I am thinking of switching to a more balanced offense, but not yet
7:45, Up 19-12
Both teams shooting below 40% FG; PUR is missing their outside shots, while we can't connect from the inside
4:04, Up 23-21
PUR making a run after they converted their first 3. We need more touches and shot attempts from our perimeter players, so I'm switching to Balanced offense
Halftime, Tied at 29
Both teams shooting below 40% FG + 10 turn overs each = a low scoring tied ball game. PUR's majority of their pts came from their fast breaks (15 pts). Burditt has to be more aggressive on offense (5 pts, 2-5 FG)
Start of 2nd Half
13:53, Tied at 45
PUR opened up the half on 5-0 run, connecting on 2 outside shots. We switched to m2m defense. We responded with a 5-0 run of our own, and it has been a see-saw battle since then. PUR's diminutive guard Jerald Hedrick now has 11 pts, while our big men Rowles and K Griffin beginning to flex their muscles inside - both are double figures in scoring
10:34, Down 47-52
We just committed our 13th turn over. Burditt continues to struggle on 3-10 shooting, and I had to replace him at the 13:00 mark. He'll be back later, but I told him to just relax and let the game come to him.
8:54, Down 47-54
3 turn overs on our next 3 possessions. I had to call a time out. I had to let them know of my disappointment. I bring back Burditt
PUR: Miss
SAM: An inside bucket by Rowles
PUR: Another miss
SAM: Thomas hitting a jumper
7:43, Down 51-54
PUR: A clutch 3 by Hedrick
SAM: A miss by Jeffries. Off rebound by Thomas. Pass to Jeffries, and then to Rowles. Short jumper by Rowles is good
PUR: They break our press, and scores an easy basket
SAM: Drive to the basket by Burditt is good
6:26, Down 55-59
PUR: Foul by Jeffries on the act of shooting. Makes both. Down 6
SAM: Thomas connecting on another jumper. Down 4
PUR: Hedrick gets away from Thomas, but he took too many steps (traveling)
I put back K Griffin to replace Doss. My entire starting lineup is on the floor except for F Griffin who has 0 pts, 4 asts, and 7 turn overs. Jeffries remain on the floor, which allows me to put Burditt on his natural "2" position
SAM: Thomas miss a 3
PUR: Foul on Rowles. It's our 8th team foul. Their C Ezra Masic (13 pts) makes both. Down 6
SAM: Miss by Burditt. Off rebound. Another miss
PUR: Miss
SAM: A jumper by Burditt (11 pts)
4:06, Down 59-63
PUR: A big 3 by Derek Burns, who prior to that shot, was 1-7 FG. I called a timeout
3:36, Down 59-66
SAM: K Griffin with an inside basket. Down 5
PUR: Turnover
SAM: Burditt's shot was rejected, and PUR regains possession
PUR: Shot attempt was blocked by Jeffries. PUR recovered but missed their shot. Rebounded by Jeffries (8 rebs), who is providing quality minutes yet again
SAM: Thomas scores (14 pts). Down 3
PUR: Jeffries with a steal
SAM: Burditt missing a 3. That could have been a big basket
PUR: K Griffin with a steal
SAM: Outlet to Jeffries, who scores on the break
1:27, Down 65-66
PUR not calling a time out
PUR: Foul on K Giffin against PUR's David Erskin. Its our 9th team foul. Erskin splits his charities. I called a timeout
1:13, Down 65-67
I praised and used my every ounce of motivational skills, telling them that they can still win this
SAM: Thomas has the ball. Pass to Burditt. Burditt dribbles and stops for a jumper. Burditt had a good look, but could not convert (5-16 FG)
No need to foul. Just play good D, and we'll have the ball back
PUR: They shoot a quick 3. Miss. I called my last timeout
0:49, Down 65-67
Should we continue giving the ball to Burditt? Or should we pound it inside to Rowles / K Griffin? I decided we go Heavy Inside on a motion offense.
Our season is on the line here. Fans are up on their seats. Here we go
SAM: Thomas dribbles on top of the key. He gives it to Rowles. Rowles makes his move. Rowles takes a shot and scores!
0:42, Tied at 67
I am shouting at the sidelines, "dont foul, dont foul"
PUR: They move the ball around, trying to find a good shot. Erskin gets the pass down low. He puts up a shot. Miss. K Griffin with the def rebound. We have no time outs remaining
0:21, Tied at 67
SAM: Thomas with pass to Burditt. Burditt makes his move. He drives hard to basket. Miss the shot but got fouled by Erskin. Burditt will be shooting the most important FTs of his career
Miss the 1st
Miss the 2nd
0:10 left
PUR: Erskin takes the final shot. Miss. K Griffin with rebound. We go to overtime
I'll give Jeffries and Rowles a short breather as they are exhausted. Which means we start OT with a small 3-guard lineup (F Griffin, Thomas, and Burditt)
I patted Burditt on the shoulders, telling him that it's ok, we are still in the game.
End of Regulation, Tied at 67
If I'm not mistaken, this is my first OT game in my 3 year career so far
Start of OT
We won the jump ball
SAM: Burditt gets the pass at the right corner. Puts up a 3. Bingo!. Up 3. We haven't lead for quite some time in this game. Burditt has 14 pts
PUR: Reggie Madison missing a pull up J. And its Burditt who grabs the rebound
SAM: F Griffin with a pass inside to K Griffin. K Griffin goes up for the slam!
4:04, Up 72-67
PUR: They miss a 3. Burditt with another rebound
SAM: PUR with a steal off K Griffin
PUR: Foul by F Griffin on Hedrick. Hedricks hits both (16 pts)
I bring back Jeffries (for defense) and Rowles (for inside scoring)
3:18, Up 72-69
SAM: Thomas and Burditt with a 2-man game. Burditt called for traveling.
PUR: They turned the ball over also, on a bad pass
SAM: They fouled Thomas. Only the 6th team foul for PUR (no FTs). On the next play, Burditt's shot was blocked. PUR recover the ball
PUR: Erskin scores.
I only have 1 time out remaining. I decided not to use it yet
2:04, Up 72-71
SAM: Thomas gives the ball to Burditt beyond the arc. Burditt puts up a shot. It's good. Burditt's 2nd 3 in OT (17 pts)
1:54, Up 75-71
PUR: They got the ball inside, and scores.
1:41, Up 75-73
SAM: Thomas missing an outside shot. But K Griffin with the off board and the putback (18 pts, 11 rebs)
1:22, up 77-73
PUR: They connected on a 3. PUR keeps coming back
0:54, Up 77-76
SAM: Thomas pass to Burditt. Burditt to Rowles down low. Rowles puts up a shot. Miss. But another off rebound by K Griffin. We reset the play. Thomas to Burditt. Pass to Rowles. Give and go to Burditt. Burditt drives, and hits the bank shot. Burditt has 19 pts (8 in OT)
Timeout by PUR
I will switch to a 1-2-2 zone, trying to prevent a 3 pt shot
0:23, Up 79-76
PUR: Snyder with the ball beyond the arc. He elected to pass to Erskin down low. Steal by Rowles!
SAM: Outlet to Thomas who is ahead of everybody else. Thomas with the jam! Pandemonium in the crowd. We will play in the Regional Finals to get a shot at the Final Four
Final score: Sam Houston St - 81, Purdue - 76
What a game! No one wanted to quit. It's a pity that someone has to lose. I congratulated each Purdue player for a very good game.

Other Notes
1. Most people would have thought that our run will end, being down 59-66 with 3:30 left in regulation. We outscored PUR 22-10 since then.
2. Keyon Griffin deserves his player of the game award, but Charles Burditt went from "zero to hero" in this game. Burditt missed what could have been the winning FTs in regulation, but was able to make it up big time during OT
3. After giving up 15 fast break points in the 1st half, we limited PUR to only 4 during the 2nd half and OT combined
