Game #1

Postby randy » Sat Jul 27, 2013 7:08 pm

11/13/97: Sam Houston St (0-0) @ Vanderbilt (0-0)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Outside (slow paced)
3. Key players: Sr PG Tyreck Pohlman
4. Pohlman starts at "2" in their 2 PG lineup

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

13:05, Up 14-10
We're winning the rebounding battle 13-4 (6-0 off rebs)

8:21, Up 21-15

4:24, Up 32-15
I am very pleased with the way the guards and small forwards attack the basket.

Halftime, Up 40-27
I don't mind missing some shots in the paint (46% FG), as long as we are crashing the boards (10 off rebs). We're winning significantly on 2nd chance pts (11-2), and fast break pts (10-0)

Field, Johnson, and Smith each with 9 pts. VANDY's Tyreck Pohlman with 8 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:52, Up 48-29
Another advantage of taking it strong to the hoop is we can fish for fouls. VANDY committed 3 fouls already inside the paint. We can do some improvement though, on our 8-15 FT

9:08, Up 60-41

3:09, Up 69-46
Bench warmers will be given some playing time

Final score: Sam Houston St - 75, Vanderbilt - 52

Box Score
Jackson 14, 9, 0
Field 13, 8, 3, 2 stls (*)
Smith 13, 5, 2

Newby 4, 4, 1
Holmes 2, 4, 2
Wallace 2, 4, 0
Lampley 2, 1, 0
Wilson 2, 1, 0
Patterson 2, 0, 1
Willis 0, 1, 0

REB: +19 (52-33)

Paint: +30
2nd Chance : +18 (23-5)
Fast Break: +16 (18-2)
Post Game Notes
1. I'm not worried much on our 41% FG shooting. As long as we continue taking high percentage inside shots inside teh paint, then our FG% will rise soon. We only took 6 3PAs (making 2), so that is definitely a good sign
2. SG Keith Field is a solid all-around player. Not only he can score (outside and drive plays), but he can also rebound and defend. PF Rashif McCoy has improved from last year, which gives me 3 reliable players (together with Jackson and Johnson) that I can confidently rotate without losing our ability to score on post plays.
3. VANDY's PG DeMarr Allen had 13 pts. PG Tyrech Pohlman (11 pts) had only 3 pts in the 2nd half

Game #2

Postby randy » Sat Jul 27, 2013 7:58 pm

11/16/97: Sam Houston St (1-0) @ Penn St (0-0)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
2. Offense focus: Inside (slow paced)
3. Key players: Sr PG Jermaine Powell
4. We'll test ourselves against a team with a similar style of play

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

15:26, Up 5-2
We're still missing shots, but getting off boards again

11:43, Up 13-10
We need to tighten up our transition defense, as PENNST got a couple of easy baskets on the break

5:30, Up 31-14
We started hitting our shots. Ray Smith (9 pts) showing he can still stroke it from the outside if needed

Halftime, Up 39-19
Rebounds comparison is 22-9. We're converting a more decent 47% FG

Ray Smith leads us with 12 pts. Glendon Jackson already with 12 rebs. PENNST's PF Craig Bean has 6 pts

Start of 2nd Half

14:41, Up 49-29
PENNST beginning to convert their outside shots, but we continue to pound inside. Jackson already with a double-double 10 pts and 13 rebs.

6:51, Up 54-35
We went to a shooting drought scoring only 2 pts for almost the past 8 mins, until Ray Smith converted a 3 from the corner. Despite our repeated attempts to take it inside, PENNST has yet to be called for a foul in the 2nd half

1:10, Up 59-49
It was 59-39 earlier, and then suddenly PENNST with a barrage of quick pts. I had to call a timeout as we're getting confident in assuming this is won ball game already

Final score: Sam Houston St - 63, Penn St - 54

Box Score
Smith 18, 5, 6, 8 tos (*)
Field 11, 5, 0, 5 tos

Post Game Notes
1. Certainly there are some lessons learned in this game, including on my part. I should have decreased our off reb intensity in the latter part of the game when we were ahead by 20, as PENNST came back with a flurry to fast break pts. Also, slow down the game
2. Smith and Field combined for 13 turn overs! Against a 2-3 zone, we should probably play a more Balanced focus on offense, instead of Favor Inside. Most of the turnovers came from forcing passes to the low post
3. A better performance by SF Jafar Newby today, as compared to his debut last game. We need to get consistent production from the "3" position
4. SG Brian Little lead PENNST with 12 pts

Game #3

Postby randy » Sat Jul 27, 2013 8:54 pm

11/19/97: Wisconsin (1-0) @ Sam Houston St (2-0)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 1-3-1 zone
2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow paced)
3. Key players: Sr SG George Johnson scored 21 pts in their 1st game
4. Last season, we seem to struggle more against the 1-3-1 zone. We'll adjust to a Balanced offense, and slightly more off freedom

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 75%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

15:26, Down 10-11
Struggled early on offense, but managed to settle down.

11:03, Down 16-17

7:59, Down 20-22
WIS is 4-8 3PT. I originally planed to make adjustments at halftime, but we'll shift now to m2m before its too late

1:54, Up 32-26
M2M defense forced many turn overs on WIS.

Halftime, Up 34-31
Our defense is ok. We took care of the ball also, with only 3 turn overs. We're dominating the off boards once again. We're simply not making shots (36% FG)

Field and Smith combined for 2-15 FG. Linehan Johnson was our only consistent performer, with 14 pts and 9 rebs. WIS' George Johnson with 8 pts

We will go back to Favor Inside in the 2nd half.

Start of 2nd Half

15:55, Up 43-33

11:19, Up 53-37
Glendon Jackson has reasserted himself here in the 2nd half

8:03, Up 64-42
WIS with 19 turn overs, and we're capitalizing on transition. Smith and Field continues to shoot poorly; I will try out a bigger lineup (SFs at the 2 and 3 spots)

3:40, Up 70-49
We'll lessen off reb intensity, and slow down the game

Final score: Wisconsin - 60, Sam Houston St - 76

Box Score

Jackson 16, 8, 2
Newby 11, 6, 2, 3 stls

Field 7, 3, 3, 2 stls
Holmes 4, 0, 2
Wallace 0, 3, 3

Fast Break: +12 (22-10)

Post Game Notes
1. If needed, we have shown that we can play good m2m defense also.
2. Field (3-14 FG) and Smith (3-10) struggled today, but other players stepped up like Newby and McCoy. Johnson dominated the paint in the 1st half, and then Jackson took over in the 2nd half. The balance and depth of this team is amazing.
3. WIS' SG George Johnson scored 14 pts, 5-16 FG

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Sr PG Ryan Smith (9.5 ppg, 4.0 apg)
4. 3 Northwestern players are on academic suspension. They have given up 81 opp ppg on their first 2 games

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

14:58, Up 11-6

11:30, Up 17-13
Field aggressive early, with 7 FTAs already

7:58, Up 27-17
NWEST already in the penalty

3:42, Up 36-30

Halftime, Up 43-32
SF Jafar Newby (12 pts) getting more comfortable with our offensive flow. We're playing our style of game again, driving to the basket, and getting offensive rebounds

Start of 2nd Half

12:43, Up 59-40
Linehan Johnson was missing too many makeable shots, and at one point was 3-11 FG. And then, he made his last 3 attempts, to blow this game wide open

6:48, Up 67-44
Unless a complete meltdown happens, the bench warmers will get to see some playing time today

Final score: Sam Houston St - 85, Northwestern - 60

Post Game Notes
1. Another testament to the balance of this team: 4-0 start, and 4 different players of the game. SF Jafar Newby seems to improve on each game.
2. NWEST C Alex Tarkanian played 40 mins (!), had 14 pts and 6 rebs; but he had difficulty with our interior defense, shooting only 5-19 FG

Game #5

Postby randy » Sun Jul 28, 2013 8:45 am

11/26/97: #17 Sam Houston St (4-0) @ South Florida (1-2)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast paced)
3. Key players: Fr PG Matt Hogue (14.7 ppg)
4. USF is weak inside, which we hope to take advantage

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

13:36, Up 11-10
Linehan Johnson dominant inside early on. USF likes to run a lot

7:45, Up 20-15
Ray Smith provided spark off the bench with 5 straight pts. Both teams sloppy with the ball with 6 turn overs each

3:35, Up 27-18

Halftime, Up 42-22
Nice run to end the half, culminating in a buzzer-beater 3 by Ray Smith. We shot 53% FG in the 1st half, while limiting USF to 29%.

Johnson and Smith in double figure scoring with 11 and 10 pts. USF was mainly shooting from the outside, with PG Matt Hogue scoring just 5 pts on 2-9 shooting

Start of 2nd Half

15:26, Up 54-32
USF starting to hit some outside shots, but Linehan Johnson is simply unchallenged in the paint. We'll adjust to m2m defense

11:28, Up 58-39
Our offense slowed down a bit when I rested Johnson; I'm putting him back

7:27, Up 69-50
USF has shot better here in the 2nd half, but they couldn't put up a big run against us. Fouls disparity is 8-0

1:50, Up 83-58
Our perimeter players took over the scoring the past 5 minutes. We'll slow down the game

Final score: Sam Houston St - 87, USF - 64

Post Game Notes
1. USF was able to match our rebounding and speed in the entire 2nd half. Our big run to end the 1st half proved to be the difference
2. Nice to have Ray Smith got out of his recent shooting slump. He was efficient today, shooting 8-12 FG
3. USF PF KenKay Wolfe had a good game in the 2nd half, finishing with 20 pts and 6 rebs

Game #6

Postby randy » Sun Jul 28, 2013 9:32 am

11/27/97: South Carolina (0-2) @ #18 Sam Houston St (5-0)
Back-to-back games during non-conf play? First time I've seen that

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast paced)
3. Key players: So SG Justin Jensen (9.5 ppg)
4. So Carolina has averaged only 56 ppg so far, shooting only 33% FG

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

14:07, Up 16-8
We established our inside game early again. Johnson and Jackson combined for 14 of our 16 pts.

7:21, Up 32-17
Smith continues his good shooting run

Halftime, Up 42-29
Points in the paint are 22-2 at the half. This time, it is Jackson who's dominating inside, with 15 pts already. I am pleased with the team committing only 3 turn overs

We'll go m2m defense in the 2nd half, as SC's points so far are mainly coming from the outside.

Start of 2nd Half

15:33, 60-35
Increasing def rebounding intensity, as we seem to give up more off rebs when playing m2m

11:41, Up 66-36
This should be an early night for our starters

3:30, Up 76-51
The center matchup now on the floor is 7-1, 300 lbs Mark Lampley vs SC's 6-11, 298 lbs Dwight Gilmore - that's almost 600 lbs battling in the lane there

Final score: South Carolina - 56, Sam Houston St - 84

Box Score
Jackson 23, 6, 0, 11-12 FG (*)
Johnson 17, 8, 0
Smith 14, 5, 2
Holmes 10, 2, 4, fouled out
Newby 8, 6, 3
Field 4, 3, 2, 2 stls
Lampley 4, 3, 1
Wilson 4, 2, 1
McCoy 0, 3, 1
Wallace 0, 2, 4

Post Game Notes
1. Even though he fouled out, Holmes had one of his better offensive performance today. Glendon Jackson led the nation in FG% last season, and he showed us why today
2. SC's massive C Dwight Gilmore got fouled a lot and shot a number of FTs towards the end of the game, padding his total to 15 pts. SG Justin Jensen finished with 10 pts

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
3. Key players: Sr SF Greg Cassel (15.7 ppg)
4. I may need to play SF Angelo Wallace more, for defensive purposes

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 60%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: M2M (double on Cassel) / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

14:07, Up 11-10
TT with 2 3s already

11:37, Up 21-15
Glendon Jackson with 11 pts already. TT's George Cassel with 7

5:37, Up 40-24
TT was hitting their 3s (5-8 3PT), which prompted me to shift to a 1-2-2 zone. It worked wonders since then, as we were able to slow down their offense. Jackson continues to own the paint, with 16 pts

2:31, Up 46-28
For the rest of this game, our defense will shift to m2m if TT's Cassel is on the floor, and 1-2-2 if he is in the bench

Halftime, Up 54-30
We shot 69% FG. SG Keith Field (14 pts) took over the scoring towards the end of the half. TT will 1 turn overs already, which is the reason why we had 19 pts in transition.

After hitting his first 3, TT's George Cassel (7 pts) missed his next 4 attempts from the arc.

Start of 2nd Half

15:04, Up 72-41
Fans are being treated to a display of fluid and efficient offense. 75% FG for the game!

10:30, Up 80-46
Glendon Jackson is almost automatic down low at 12-14 FG. I'll pull him out now; the rest of the starters will follow

7:31, Up 86-51

5:04, Up 88-55
Bench warmers now on the floor, including crowd favorite 7-1 Mark Lampley. We go back to 2-3 zone.

3:12, Up 92-59
Lampley scoring our last 4 pts, to the delight of the crowd

2:38, Up 94-59
Lampley with another basket. He's 3-3 FG

1:52, Up 96-59
And another one by Lampley

Final score: Texas Tech - 67, Sam Houston St - 98

Box Score

Post Game Notes
1. Glendon Jackson is 23-26 FG in the last 2 games. Barring any slump in the upcoming games, Jackson may well become the NCAA's all-time career leader in FG% after his school playing days are over
2. TT's George Cassel had a decent game with 16 pts (6-12 FG), and facing double coverage all the time

Game #8

Postby randy » Sun Jul 28, 2013 6:08 pm

12/3/97: #18 Sam Houston St (7-0) @ Creighton (4-2)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 2-3
2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
3. Key players: Sr SF David Dawson (24.7 ppg)
4. We'll be tested against a team with a high-volume scorer. Dawson averages almost 20 3PAs per game. No other Creighton player is averaging more than 8 pts.

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 60%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: M2M (double on Dawson) / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

15:46, Up 9-0
Dawson has only attempted 1 shot so far, a missed 3. Linehan Johnson with 2 early fouls, and he's on the bench

11:10, Up 15-10
Glendon Jackson already called for 3 traveling violations in the low post. I have a small lineup now, with SF Jafar Newby playing the 4. Shifting to Balanced focus on offense, as CREIGH is playing the 2-3 zone well

7:27, Up 23-14
We have given up 5 off rebs to CREIGH because of our small lineup, but the Balanced offense created better spacing and more pts

3:43, Up 31-14
With CREIGH's David Dawson resting on the bench, we shifted to 2-3 and challenged CREIGH to take outside shots. They can't hit, and we were able to build a big lead

Halftime, Up 35-23
CREIGH capitalized from the line on our penalty situation towards the end of the half

Field with 10 pts, and Smith has 8. Not too many opportunities to score inside, because of CREIGH's 2-3 zone. CREIGH's Dawson has 10 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:41, Up 41-32
CREIGH got close to as low as 7 a couple of times. Increasing our def rebounding intensity, as CREIGH is getting too may off rebounds

11:26, Up 57-35
We got easy transition baskets, to blow the game wide open. Dawson starting to miss

6:21, Up 64-44
More than half of our 13 turn overs so far are traveling calls. I will slow the pace a bit

2:06, Up 67-55
A furious late rally by CREIGH, led by Dawson

Jackson scored on the post. A miss from 3 by Dawson. That should do it

Final score: Sam Houston St - 71, Creighton - 57

Post Game Notes
1. We had to battle hard on that game. Our bench provided the big difference in this game. The crucial run happened in the 1st half when their star SF had to sit in the bench, and we took advantage. PF Rashif McCoy being named the player of the game, is a testament to our bench strength
2. CREIGH's SF David Dawson had a shooting spree late in the game, finishing with 27 pts, 7-15 3PT. Unfortunately for them, he didn't have enough support from his team mates

Game #9

Postby randy » Sun Jul 28, 2013 10:39 pm

12/7/97: #17 Sam Houston St (8-0) @ Texas A&M (2-3)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 1-3-1
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
3. Key players: Fr SF Darelle Bibby (14.4 ppg)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 60%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5
Tip off (1st Half)

15:23, Up 12-9
TEXAM scoring primarily from the outside. Shifting to 1-2-2 zone

11:14, Up 20-18
Both teams playing at a high pace. TEXAM can score both inside and outside

7:22, Up 33-24
Our 2nd unit clearly much better than that of TEXAM.

Halftime, Up 47-37
Most of TEXAM's 10 fouls in the 1st half were in the act of shooting, so we shot a lot of FTs; and we made almost all of them, 14-15 FT. TEXAM converted 5-15 3PT. The high scores were because of lots of shots attempted, not high FG%

Keith Field is very active on offense, scoring 17 pts. TEXAM's Darelle Bibby with 7 pts

We wil run set plays exclusively for the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

15:23, Up 57-37
We were running Motion offense exclusively, as TEXAM begin to play m2m defense. On the other hand, their offense has taken a halt.

11:30, Up 67-44
TEXAM was back to 1-3-1, and we run our 1-3-1 zone attack all the time.

6:59, Up 78-57
TEXAM had a small run to cut the lead to 16, but we recovered. Bench will come in soon

Final score: Sam Houston St - 95, Texas A&M - 78

Post Game Notes
1. TEXAM made the mistake of electing to go to a track fest against us, as they don't have enough firepower in their bench to match with ours. We scored 95 pts, despite having one of my offensive weapons (Newby) going scoreless
2. TEXAM's Darelle Bibby limited to 9 pts and no rebs

Game #10 - a big test!

Postby randy » Sun Jul 28, 2013 11:45 pm

12/10/97: #17 Sam Houston St (9-0) @ #2 Houston (8-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
3. Key players: Jr SF Martin Latham (21.8 ppg, 7.1 rpg), Sr SG Bryan Head (14.4 ppg, 43% 3PT)
4. Houston was #12 in preseason ranking, but moved up quickly . Latham is a 5-star player, the rest of the starting lineup are at least 4-stars, and the bench loaded with 3.5 stars players. We can't focus the defense on one player only

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 1-2-2 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 5

We'll switch between different zone defenses, depending on how they are scoring their points
Tip off (1st Half)

15:30, Tied at 4
Both teams are cold. We're executing our plays, but our shots are not falling; each HOU player is good individual defender

11:56, Up 10-7
We're hanging in there. Glendon Jackson battling on the inside, with 6 pts and 3 off rebs

7:31, Up 18-14
We had the lead up to 9, 16-7, but HOU quick to come back. Field (4 pts) is strictly driving to the hole

6:26, Up 24-14
Jackson and Johnson's off rebounding brought the lead to 10

2:30, Up 36-21
The home crowd is stunned. I substitute on every opportunity to have fresh legs on the floor all the time

Halftime, Up 45-27
The guards and small forwards are driving to the lane, and the big men are winning the battle of the boards. PG Davor Holmes even hit a couple of 3s

Jackson and Smith with 10 pts each. Head (12 pts) and Latham (9) scored all but 6 pts of HOU; we can let this two players get their usual numbers, as long as we contain the others

Start of 2nd Half

14:48, Up 57-40
HOU's Head and Latham continue to score (30 pts combined), but we are executing our offense well also

10:37, Up 63-45
I continue to shuffle my players in and out of the court; everyone doing their fair share on scoring

7:41, Up 69-50

4:15, Up 74-56
HOU's Latham beginning to miss his shots. We'll slow down the game and eat up some clock

0:37, Up 80-67
HOU hitting consecutive 3s. It's too late for them to catch up now, but Im not taking any chances. I called a time out

Final score: Sam Houston St - 82, Houston - 68

Box Score
Jackson 16, 9, 2 (*)
Field 13, 5, 2
Smith 12, 6, 4
Johnson 10, 8, 0
Newby 10, 4, 2, 2 blks
Holmes 10, 3, 3
McCoy 7, 6, 2
Wallace 4, 4, 2
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 47-41%
REB: +19 (17-5 off)
TO: -2
Paint: +36 (46-10)
2nd Chance : +6
Fast Break: Even
Post Game Notes
1. A total team effort. Each of my 8 regular rotation players were ready to contribute anytime they are called; and much more often than not, they delivered.
2. We chose not to double team HOU's top scorers, which enticed them to carry the offense by themselves. SG Bryan Head finished with 24 pts, and SF Martin Latham had 23 (8-21 FG)
