Winning is Everything

Game #46

Postby randy » Mon Dec 23, 2013 1:23 am

Dec 31, 2001: Towson (9-2, 1-0) @ Delaware (6-4, 1-0)

We're dominatingthe rebounding battle, but our poor shooting, and PG Anthony Martin's 3 passing errors meant the score to be still close. Up 11-8, 11:26. No matter how bad DEL's outside shooting is (1-8 3PT), they would eventually take the lead given the manner we played in the 1st half. Halftime, Down 22-25.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Turn overs: TOW 10, DEL 2
  • Rebounding: TOW 23, DEL 14
  • We need to forget our performance in the 1st half, and we must realize that we still have a good chance of winning this game. We need to be aggressive to take the ball inside, in order to fish some fouls and score pts from the FT line.

Start of 2nd half

6 of our 1st 14 pts were from the FT line, as we repeatedly take the ball inside the paint. Up 36-30, 15:35. Outside of C Alex Demond, my two other players in the post (C Herbert Desmond and PF Bevon Green) have combined for 19 pts. SG Cain Ward beginning to heat up as well. But DEL is still keeping this game close. We have already equaled our production in the entire 1st half, with almost 12 mins remaining in the 2nd half. Up 44-39, 11:58.

DEL was 2-16 3PT earlier, but has connected on 5 of their last 9 attempts. Up 54-53, 6:13. Up 3. Up 1. Up 3. And then DEL tied the game on their 8th triple of the game. On our next play, DEL got called for their 7th team foul. Tied at 58, 3:37.

PF Bevon Green to shoot 1-and-1. Green hits both. Up 60-58, 3:37.

DEL was able to convert a FG. Tied once again. PF Bevon Green gets the ball on the post, and Green scores. Green has 15 pts for the game. Up 62-60, 3:04.

DEL hits another 3. I should have shifted to m2m defense, but will do so on the successive plays. We go down by 1. DEL with another 3! That is their 9th 3pt shot in the 2nd half. Timeout. Down 62-66, 1:59.

C Alex DeMond able to fish a foul, and hits both FTs. Down 2. We got called for a shooting foul. 2 FTs for DEL. Split. Timeout. Down 64-67, 1:27.

SG Cain Ward receives the pass. Ward puts up a 3 pt shot. Shot is good! Ward with 17 pts. Tied at 67, 1:16.

DEL missed a 3. But they get the off rebound. The put back is good! Lost opportunity for us. Timeout. Down 67-69, 0:50.

Foul called on DEL. PF Bevon Green to shoot 1-and-1 again. Green calmly sinks both. Tied at 69, 0:43.

We got called for a foul. Only our 6th team foul, but it was the 5th foul of backup PG Nick Granger. I opted to play Granger more, because starting PG Anthony Martin has had too many turn overs passing the ball. Now, I have no choice but to put back Martin

DEL inbounds the ball again. They attempt a 3, but SG Cain Ward blocks the shot. Good defensive effort by Ward blocking a 3pt shot. We recover the ball. I called my last timeout. Tied at 69, 0:28.

We want to take the last. But SG Haven Wilkerson saw an open lane. Wilkerson drives, and scores! Timeout DEL. Up 71-69, 0:15.

DEL burns all their timeout. Now both teams have no timeouts left

DEL inbounds. PF Bevon Green forces his man to commit a turn over. What a game by Green. 0:06 left. DEL will likely give up a quick foul. They did. Double bonus. 2 FTs for SG Haven Wilkerson. Wilkerson gets both. 0:03 left, 2 possession ball game. It's over. What a game

  • We almost lost because of the 19 fast break pts we gave up. The players persevered; with superb FT shooting (15-16 FT for the game) and a couple of key defensive stops in the end, we're able to snatch away a road win against the team who beat us in last season's tournament championship game.
  • DEL shot 10-31 3PT

Game #47

Postby randy » Mon Dec 23, 2013 2:38 am

Jan 4, 2002: Drexel (5-6, 2-0) @ Towson (10-2, 2-0)

The two teams combined for 0-10 FG at the start of the game. We kick started the scoring after more than 3 mins have gone by in the game, as DREX continues (0-10 FG). Up 14-0, 12:07. DREX shots have come in streaks, but overall thier 1st half performance was characterized by long drought spells. On offense, our bench has surprisingly come to play today, contributing 24 pts. Halftime, Up 43-20.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: DREX 25%, DEL 56% (we scored 30 pts in the paint)
  • Turn overs: DREX 5, TOW 2
  • It didn't matter that our main scorer, SG Cain Ward, went scoreless in the 1st half, 0-6 FG

Start of 2nd half

DREX momentarily brought down our lead to 20, but that's as far as they went. We continuously built our lead, and cruised away in the 2nd half.

Postby randy » Mon Dec 23, 2013 8:13 am

Jan 7, 2002: George Mason (4-8, 0-3) @ Towson (11-2, 3-0)

We're shooting 33% FG, with SG Haven Wilkerson 0-6. Down 15-16, 9:17. C Alex DeMond (8 pts) was a significant reason we got settled on our offense and started to regain control of this game. Halftime, Up 36-27.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Pts in paint: GM 8, TOW 22
  • Off rebounds: GM 6, TOW 3; fortunately for us, GM only had two 2nd chance pts in the 1st half

Start of 2nd half

We hit a couple of 3pt shots, and our lead slowly beginning to increase. Up 50-34, 13:54. SG Cain Ward (22 pts, 10-14 FG) has taken control of our offense, and no one from GM can seem to stop him. Up 60-42, 7:35. Turn overs and penalty situation have prevented GM from starting any form of rally they have in mind.

Jan 11, 2002: #25 Towson (12-2, 4-0) @ Hofstra (9-4, 3-1)

HOF has burned us early from the outside. Down 9-15, 11:48. Backup C Herbert Desmond's 8 pts off the bench helped us come back, despite HOF's burying 7 3pt shots in the 1st half. Halftime, Tied at 31.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • 3pt shooting: TOW 0-1, HOF 7-11
  • Pts in th paint: TOW 18, HOF 6

Start of 2nd half

Both teams started cold in the 2nd half. Tied at 33, 15:53. Both teams have made only 3 FGs in the 2nd half; HOF's 2 of 3 FGMs were transition baskets. Tied at 38, 11:40. Scoring has slightly improved, but the game remains close. Up 48-47, 6:49. HOF's 10th 3pt shot of the game tied the game at 54, but C Herbert Desmond (14 pts) answered back with a FG inside the paint. HOF turns the ball over on their next possession. Last media timeout. Up 56-54, 2:13.

SG Haven Wilkerson (7 pts) scores on a drive. Up 58-54, 2:01. HOF responds back with another 3pt shot. Timeout. Up 58-57, 1:32.

We'll go m2m defense on out next defensive plays. But we have to score here.

SG Haven Wilkerson gets the pass. Wilkerson puts up a 3, and it's good. What a big shot. Wilkerson (10 pts) scoring our last 5 pts. Up 61-57, 1:16. Despite our m2m defense, HOF connected on their 12th 3pt shot of the game. Timeout. Up 61-60, 0:57.

SG Cain Ward goes for 3. Missed. C Alex Demond with the off rebound. DeMond puts up a shot. Missed also. Ball out of bounds in favor of HOF. Timeout HOF. Up 61-60, 0:41.

I will switch the taller SG Haven Wilkerson toguard their PG who has 22 pts; and also bring in SF Aaron Hale (reigning Conf DPOY) to gard their SF who has 17 pts.

We got called for a foul. Only our 5th. 0:25 left. HOF inbounds again. HOF's main scorers can't put up a shot. They go to thier C who forces a shot. Blocked. But HOF recovered. Their SG, who has scored only 4 pts so far, shoots a jumper and scores! Timeout. Down 61-62, 0:06.

Need to increase pace. Last shot time. We go to SG Haven Wilkerson. Wilkerson with a good look, but he missed the shot. Game over.

Jan 14, 2002: Northeastern (4-10, 1-4) @ #25 Towson (12-3, 4-1)

Both teams combined for 10 turn overs already (NORTH with 6). Up 16-9, 11:42. Turn overs continues to be a problem for both teams; we just shot better to maintain our lead. I risked SG Haven Wilkerson to stay on the floor despite 3 fouls, and then he got called for his 2nd offensive foul of the game (4th personal). Halftime, Up 33-22.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Turn overs: NORTH 14, TOW 11
  • FG shooting: NORTH 38%, TOW 67%
  • We could have had a larger lead, if not for our 6-13 FT (46%) performance in the 1sh half

Start of 2nd half

More turn overs for both teams, but NORTH's shooting has gotten even worse. C Alex DeMond scored our 1st 6 pts of the 2nd half, and we have slowly built a big lead. Up 43-25, 12:41. NORTH gaining a lttle momentum to cut our lead to 13. But upon his return to the floor, C Alex DeMond added 6 more pts to increase our lead once again; DeMond has scored 12 of his 19 pts in the 2nd half so far. Up 9:37, 53-36.

SG Cain Ward and co took over the scoring. NORTH tried to shot their way back, but we have always answered on our offense.

Jan 18, 2002: NC Wilmington (10-5, 3-3) @ #25 Towson (13-3, 5-1)

UNCWI turned the ball over 8 times on their 1st 12 possessions. Up 16-6, 11:50. UNCWI started to settle on their offense, courtesy of their bench, and reduced our lead to 5. C Alex DeMond (19 pts) then went on a tear, as he was virtually unstoppable inside the paint. Halftime, Up 44-32.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Pts in the paint: UNCWI 6, TOW 26

Start of 2nd half

SG Haven Wilkerson (16 pts) and Cain Ward (8 pts, two triples in the 2nd half) engineered a 12-2 run, as we open up the 2nd half with a big lead. Up 56-34, 15:53. UNCWI never threatened the rest of the game. SG Cain Ward and SF Aaron Hale got their offense going in the 2nd half, en route to a confidence-building blowout game, ahead of a rough 3-game road trip.

Jan 21, 2002: #25 Towson (14-3, 6-1) @ Old Dominion (5-11, 3-4)

Our players are wisely taking it strong to the basket, trying to get OLD (5 team fouls) into penalty. Up 18-6, 11:40. OLD made a rally and cut down our lead to 6. But our big men went to work to regain and further increase our lead. Halftime, Up 37-23.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Pts in the paint: TOW 24, OLD 10
  • OLD has not hit their outside shots, going 1-8 3PT. Their 8 fast break pts was their significant source of offense in the 1st half

Start of 2nd half

OLD cut our lead down to 9 early in the 2nd half. But OLD's turn overs and early foul trouble derailed their efforts to continue their rally. Up 46-33, 11:33. We didn't shoot well in the 2nd half, but our defensive efforts was more than enough to get ourselves an comfortable road win.

Game #53

Postby randy » Tue Dec 24, 2013 4:07 pm

Jan 25, 2002: #25 Towson (15-3, 7-1) @ VCU (9-8, 4-4)

I got an early technical as our players are getting hammered inside the paint, and VCU getting the benefit of most calls. We started to settled down, but VCU alerady has a good head start, shooting the ball well early. Down 14-22, 10:21. We slowly got ourselves back in the game, and had the chance to cut down our deficit to 2, but we missed; we didn't score on the last 3 mins of the 1st half. Halftime, Down 24-30.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Blocks: TOW 0, VCU 4; VCU's interior defense limited us to only 12 pts in the paint

Start of 2nd half

We got ourselves to within 2 pts twice, but VCU able to answer back on both occasions. Down 32-37, 15:20. We hit a 3 to cut the lead once once again to 2. VCU answers back yet again. Down 4. And then we scored on an 8-0 run, as we take the lead for the 1st time in this game; we were down by as many as 11 early in the 1st half. Up 43-39, 11:12.

Here comes VCU again, scoring 4 straight to tie the game. And then SG Cain Ward (17 pts) hits his 2nd triple of the game, to break the tie. After an exchange of baskets and misses, VCU hits both FTs to cut the lead to 1. VCU then got another block (their 6th of the game); on their next offensive possession, VCU sinks their 6th 3pt shot of the game. SG Haven Wilkerson answers back with 3pt shot of his own. The 2 teams exchanged turn overs prior to the last media timeout. Up 53-52, 3:48.

Another VCU turn over. On our next possession, SG Cain Ward drives strong and scores. Up 3. VCU missed. VCU called for their 7th team foul. PG Anthony Martin splits his charities. Up 4. Another miss by VCU. We turned the ball over (I probably should have called a timeout). VCU misses again. Now I call a timeout. Up 56-52, 1:35.

SG Haven Wilkerson puts up a 3. Miss. Ill-advised shot. VCU rebounds the ball. This time, VCU hits a shot. Timeout. Up 56-54, 1:00.

We need to take it strong, as VCU is already in the penalty. We'll go Heavy Inside on offense, and later, m2m on defense.

We go to C Alex DeMond on the low post. DeMond shoots. Off the mark, but DeMond gets his own miss. DeMond attempts another shot. DeMond hits a tough shot in traffic! Timeout VCU. Up 58-54, 0:39.

VCU hits a big 3. Timeout. Up 58-57, 0:21.

Same play; we want to dump the ball inside. But before we can execute our play, VCU called for a foul. 1-and-1 for PG Anthony Martin, who earlier split his FTs. Martin hits both FTs. VCU run out of timeouts. Up 60-57, 0:20.

We'll double team on their SG, who connected a 3 on their earlier play. Their SG gets the ball, but our double team forced him to give up the ball. Turn over! 0:08 left

VCU no choice but to foul. 1-and-1 for SG Haven Wilkerson. 0:06. We just need 1 more pt to seal this game. Wilkerson missed, but C Alex DeMond gets the off rebound. We wisely passed the ball around, and the game clock expired

Notes
  • Good old-fashioned gut-it-out win. Down early in the game, as VCU taking away our interior offense. But as long as we play good consistent defense, we'll always have a chance to win no matter how our offense is performing

Game #54

Postby randy » Wed Dec 25, 2013 4:04 am

Jan 28, 2002: #25 Towson (16-3, 8-1) @ William & Mary (5-13, 2-7)

Both teams with 5 turn overs each. WM is shooting 25% FG. Up 15-8, 11:00. WM got into penalty and we took advantage, converting 9-12 FT. Majority of WM's offense came from 3pt shots, 8-16 3PT. Halftime, Up 48-33.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: TOW 74%, WM 41%
  • We also did well from connecting beyond the arc, 5-6 3PT

Start of 2nd half

Our outside shooting continues to be efficient (7-9 3PT), while WM is erratic at best. Up 64-44, 11:23. Closest WM had been was 15, after hitting their 13th 3pt shot of the game. Up 74-59, 3:26. WM didn't score until the last 30 secs of the game.

Final Score: Towson - 79, William & Mary - 64

  • Unusually off game for C Alex DeMond, but the bench stepped up today

Game #55

Postby randy » Wed Dec 25, 2013 8:52 am

Feb 1, 2002: Georgia St (7-12, 3-7) @ #24 Towson (17-3, 9-1)

We're going to the line often, but missed a number of FTs already (5-9 FT). Up 18-12, 11:06. GAST can't get anything on their offense, either missing a lot of shots (31% FG), or continuously throwing the ball away (8 turn overs). Up 33-12, 6:03. Sensational 1st half, esp for C Alex DeMond (17 pts, 8-10 FG). I know it's 20 more mins of basketball, but this game has been won as early as the 1st half. Halftime, Up 51-18.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: GAST 30%, TOW 61%
  • Turn overs: GAST 9, TOW 0 (wow!)
  • GAST can't get any offense in whatever way; zero pts in the paint, zero 2nd chance pts, zero fast break pts, and even 0-3 FT

Start of 2nd half

Signs of complacency were shown in the 1st 10 mins of the 2nd half. We were still leading by 26 pts, but I motivated the players that we must try to win the 2nd half; we ended up with a 36-36 tie after a buzzer beating 3 by GAST

Final Score: Georgia St - 54, Towson - 87

Notes
  • My top 3 players all scored 20+ pts. We did the damage on offense not just inside the paint, but also from the outside; we shot 8-14 3PT today
