1/1/2049: 2-0 start to conf. play. We’re the only ranked teams in the PAC 12.

1/29: 21-1, 9-1. +19.2 PPG, +14.6 RBs, +2.5 TOs, +5.7 assists, +3.8 blocks, +2.5 steals.

We lost 68-72 at Washington on a night when we didn’t shoot well, and when we gave up 9 points more than our average. The refs didn’t help but we simply didn’t play well. 2 games up on Oregon ST, 3 up on 3 other teams.

Uda Burk is #8 and Bob Roy #21 on the Norton list.

2/12: 25-1, 13-1, #1, RPI #1. 3 game lead in the PAC 12.

Uda Burk is #9 on the Norton list.

2/26: We end the regular season29-1, 17-1, #1, RPI #1. +20.9 PPG, +15.5 RBs, +3.2 TOs, +6.3 assists, +3.9 blocks, +2.6 steals. #1 in RBs and blocks, #2 in PPG, #4 in TOs, #5 in assists.

Up 5 on Arizona, 7 or more on the rest. Burk, Gamm, and Roy continue to lead the way. The rest of the weight is shared among 5 guys who all contribute a great deal.

3/5: It’s “the day!” We lose … everybody! 8 guys go pro! 1 more is graduating. That leaves us with 1 PG and 1 SF, plus the PG and SF who have committed. We’ll chase other guys after the season ends but WOW!!!

November, 2151: I left civilization in 2079. The only persons I saw after that were the three I killed in 2099. More than 70 years alone came to an end this morning.

I woke up to alarms shortly after dawn. When I went up on deck I saw a boat in the distance headed my way. After the initial shock I hailed it, to let them know mine wasn’t a ghost ship. They returned my hail and kept coming. It took about a half hour but they eventually pulled up next to my boat. I saw three women and a man. They all looked to be in their 20s. I invited them over and they came aboard. They programmed their robots and I did mine to keep the boats close to each other. The seas were very calm so this was not a problem.

We introduced ourselves and told our stories.

I was less than truthful, and less than complete in telling my story. I told them I’d been alone for a long time, and that I barely remembered my family, it had been so long.

They said that they had been part of a small fleet that cruised together for a few generations. The storms had sunk the other boats and killed everyone else.

They were a brother and sister, and two family friends. They weren’t aware of any other survivors.

The day flew by. As evening approached we decided to have dinner together (We’d already had lunch earlier), and then they would go back to their boat for the night. Tomorrow we would discuss plans for the future.

Day 2: Their names were Kevin and Marcie (the brother and sister), Lana and Joy. Kevin and Joy were a couple. They seemed to all get along really well. They said there were never issues about who needed to do what, or anything like that; they shared the workload with never a disagreement or hassle. They were kids, Kevin 26, Marcie 24, Lana 22, and Joy 23. When they asked me my age I said that I was in my mid 30s (That’s how old I look so…).

They had survived pretty much the way I had, by relying on robots, 3D printers, and HCs. They had had a horrible time of it during the storms, barely surviving at some points, and of course they had lost their families and friends in the storms. It turns out their community was made up of a little over a hundred people before disaster struck.

Once they were alone on the last remaining boat they never got down to one of each machine, as I had, but they’d gotten to 3 printers and 2 HCs. The advantage they had was that there were four of them, so that they were able to share the work that I did on my own.

We shared experiences and told stories for most of the second day, and we postponed talk of the future for another day. I dialed up Indian food for dinner. They hadn’t eaten it before and loved it. We had a bunch of different dishes, appetizers, and breads, and shared everything. They took the discs with the Indian meals and recipes and made copies, and loaded them onto their printers.

I am loving the energy of these young people. It is wonderful to have people to interact with after all this time. I had often wondered if I’d lost the knack for socializing, it had been so long, but no, it has been very easy. Only time will tell how well I’ll do living with other people if we decide to stay together, which I can’t imagine we won’t. I’m so set in my ways after all these decades the change will take some getting used to.

Day 3: After breakfast together we finally got down to discussing plans. It was a long discussion. Not that there was any conflict, there wasn’t, but we wanted to talk it through. All five of us were very solidly in favor of staying together. It was a matter of working out details.

Both boats were loaded with equipment, HCs, printers, solar batteries, panels, and cells, extra robots, discs, computers, other equipment, and on and on. We wanted to keep both boats for obvious reasons, but thought it best to all live together.

We thought about finding a way to turn two boats into one, attaching them together somehow, but we decided that if violent storms returned this would not be a good idea as it might affect the boats’ ability to stay afloat. We finally decided to lash the two boats together in a way that we could separate them quickly if need be.

This gave us the living space of two boats while effectively having one, for all real purposes. That and we all got to keep our own cabins. Kevin and Joy shared one, but the rest of us were solo.

We weren’t planning on spending every moment together by any means, but we all thought this would be a great way to live. It would really help me more than them in that we would share the workload for the two boats equally. We also planned to have lunch and dinner together every day. On some days we would all just dial up whatever meal we wanted but on others one of us would cook, to make it feel like a little get together or celebration.

It amazed me how similar the paths we had taken had been, and how very similar our routines and daily activities were. All four of these kids were in great shape, mostly because they were avid hikers and mountain climbers. They all liked to cook. They were all very bright and very interested in science, reading, exploring- all of those things that were so important to me.

There were interests they had that I didn’t, and vice versa, so we would have things to teach each other.

We were off to a fantastic start.

3/9: #9 seed Washington ST, 11-17, 8-10, won the play in. They’re first.

3/10: 76-62. Not as close as the score. We never trailed, and we led by 21 at the half. 20, 9 for Gamm.

#4 seed Colorado, 14-14, 10-8, in the semis. We beat them by 38 here and then 23 there.

3/11: 70-41. 42-7 at the half. 7! A team effort with everyone contributing.

#3 seed Oregon, 19-10, 10-8, for the title. We won by 26 here, but only 7 there.

3/12: 77-62. Up 14 at the half. 41 RBs, 6 TOs. Great play by everyone, especially the bench.

32-1. I can’t believe we won’t be #1 overall this year.

#1 overall. We play Stony Brook, 17-15.

3/16: 75-51. Never close. 19, 15 for Gamm, 20, 7, 7 for Burk. +27 RBs.

#9 seed Arizona, 20-11, in the 2nd round. We beat them by 21 in the regular season.

3/18: 87-43. A complete rout. I played everybody. 51 RBs.

#5 seed, #13 ranked Memphis, 25-9, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3/23: 92-65. They stayed with us for the 1st half. We adjusted and tore it up in the 2nd. Sub guard Ted Mart led us with 19.

#3 seed, #7 ranked UConn, 28-5, in the Elite Eight. This is a good team, especially inside.

3/25: 75-71. We were down 10 at the half and then 13 when they hit a three on the 1st possession of the 2nd half. Their PF was killing us to that point. I called a TO 20 seconds into the 2nd half and really raised the roof.

They woke up, and it all turned around. That PF ended up with 30 and 13, but he only got 5 after that. 27 for Burk, and +16 RBs, +11 in the 2nd half.

Back to the Final Four as we try to threepeat.

We play #2 ranked Seton Hall, 34-2. They’re a very good team. Their SG gets 23.8 a game. They only have one good big guy, and that may be the difference. We beat them by only 6 in the Coaches Classic, but then by
19 here.

On the other side it’s #3 Duke, 31-5, vs. #8 Indiana, 28-7.

4/1: 93-72. I expected more trouble. 20, 6, 9 for Roy, 21 for Burk, 13, 10 for Gamm, 11, 7 for Jenk. +21 RBs.

#8 Indiana, 29-7, for the title. They rebound very well, but we think we can turn them over. This is a team we should beat, but you need to do it on the court.

4/3: 90-48. Wow, just WOW! 64-25 at the half. Uda Burk led us with 21.

Threepeat!

4/4: Awards: Burk was tourney MOP and 2nd team All American. I got national COY. In the PAC 12 Ken Gamm was POY, frosh OY and 1st team. Lan Blon was defensive POY and 1st team, and Burk made 1st team. Bob Roy made 2nd team. I got conf. COY.

I have decided that if there is any way possible, I’m leaving UCLA. Southern California has become a desert hell to live in and the crime rate is through the roof. I’m looking forward to a new challenge.

4/9: I’m going to North Carolina. I didn’t expect to be that far south, but I couldn’t resist. Their program has been going downhill for several years. Their Team Prestige is down to 66, and they were 16-14, 7-
11 this season. But the tradition is there, the budget is there, the support is there. And do to a quirk in climate change the average temp is in the 70s year round.

4/16: I have trouble hiring assistants and can’t get decent ones, as usual.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade. Got it. We go from C- to C+.

38-1 and another title. A great run at UCLA. Overall, I am 573-141, .803.

I expect it to take about 3 years to get UNC to the point where they are winning national titles.

Re: The Last Man

Postby Wayne23 » Sat Mar 18, 2017 12:48 pm

December, 2151: Very soon after meeting the kids I realized I had a problem. If we were indeed going to remain together over the long haul it would become obvious at some point that I was not aging.

Back in the old, old, old days, before the collapse of society in 2079 and 2080, it had become known that the work of Dr. Worth at Arizona ST had been successful with me and that I was not aging normally, if at all. I had become probably as much or more of a celebrity on that account as I had through my coaching.

It was highly unlikely that these kids would know anything about that ancient tale all these years later, so my dilemma was about how much to share, and when to share it. The old news stories could be brought up, of course, and I could just let them read about it.

The other thing, which I just barely mentioned above, was that I wound up being quite possibly the most successful college basketball coach in history. If any of these kids had an interest in hoops it was more than possible that they might come across an article about me. If that happened, the longevity thing was in most major articles, so they would make the discovery. I decided that this needed to be addressed right away.

On the evening of the 4th or 5th day we were together I asked that we get together after dinner. I told the whole story as they sat there in amazement.

“You mean you’re like 150 years old?”

“Yes, Lana. I turned 151 on May 1.”

“WOW!”

Interestingly enough, it only took a few days for this to become a nonfactor. As it turned out they were much more interested in my experience coaching. Their little community had discovered basketball and it had become more than an interest with many of the people there. They had formed a league in the HC and played and coached in it, using holopeople to fill rosters. In addition, they had about 40 people participating in the same HC college hoops coaching game I used here. Each of the 40 coached a college hoop team in that game. All 4 of the kids here had been coaches. They desperately wanted to coach against me in the game so we started a new league right away. It involved every college hoop team that had existed in the 2020 season, and we all took teams with a Team Prestige of 20, to see who could develop the best team over the years. We made up house rules and got fully involved. It really bonded us in a lot of ways.

Being as young as they were these guys were competitive, but in a friendly way. They played hard and played to win, but there were never hard feelings. We spent lots of hours competing- in hoops, in table tennis, in problem solving games, in all sorts of activities, both physical and intellectual.

We also shared hobbies and interests, and I quickly became “one of the family.” There were occasional jokes, and teasing references to me as “Pop” or “Grandpa,” but they didn’t seem to see me that way. They accepted me as an equal.

We developed routines, found ways to respect each other’s space, and just became a little community.

It was decided that I should not sleep alone on the boat. They felt it made sense for 2 people to sleep on one boat and 3 on the other; that way if trouble happened there would be at least 2 people to handle it. We rearranged things and cleared out a cabin, and Lana moved over to my boat. Then, almost immediately, Marcie thought it made sense for her to come over as well, so we rearranged things again, and got a cabin ready for her.

By the end of that first month we were well settled in. Stan and Ollie took to the new people quickly, and all four of them really liked the cats. They had not had pets so this was pretty special.

5/1: We buy the national and international gold.

I got a very warm welcome here. I hope they’ll be patient!

6/5: We’re looking at a few transfers. We have two open roster spots.

6/11: We don’t get any of them.

6/26: Only 3 scholarships. I may cut after the season ends to get more players in; I may even cut one player now. We’ll see.

My UCLA team owned the NBA draft: #2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 13, 17, 29.

I’m using the UNC name and reputation, and my coaching record with recruits. That and telling them they can be part of making UNC the power it once was. That’s all I have. This year’s team is not going to set the world on fire. I plan on having a soft pre-conf. schedule to build wins, which would also help.

8/7: We’re making some progress with recruits. I think we’ll do okay.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, 2 PFs. Yes, I did cut one player.

9/18: 4 for 4! #22, 35, 37, 57. They all committed. We’re going after some others. If I can cut some players in the spring I will.

Preseason NIT vs. #9 Virginia. I told my new A. D. that we were not ready for this big a challenge, and that he should get us into one of the minor tournaments. He didn’t listen. Not happy.

The rest of the pre-conf. schedule is definitely soft.

10/2: 1st day of practice. There’s a lot of work to do but I see possibilities.

11/6: The lineup:

Returning junior Ben Robb and frosh Dave Kana at guard, with soph Jay Slan and senior walk on Sam Bard behind them.

Frosh Key Lack is at SF. He may be our best player.

Returning starter, junior Cam Reed, and returning starter, soph Dal John start inside. Senior Dan Muha, junior Jay Flet, and soph, Dl Pott sub inside.

Here we go!

June, 2152: Six more months together. This has worked out really well. We enjoy each other’s company so much, and do so many things together. The basketball coaching game is terrific. Right now Joy’s team is doing the best, but it’s close among all of us.

I’m the best table tennis player but Lana is close.

Kevin is kicking our butts in the Sherlock Holmes game. This is the only thing we compete in where one person has a big edge on the rest of us.

This morning Kevin and Joy said we all needed to meet after dinner so we did. They came up with a blockbuster surprise. It seems there’s going to be a baby in December or January. They said they had been very careful NOT to have this happen for a long time, but they felt they really wanted this, and now is the time.

We all congratulated them and then thought of all of the repercussions involved. The kids did not have an HC medical program that dealt with pregnancy and childbirth but I did- hey, I grabbed every disc imaginable back when I could get them. We loaded it and the holodoctor in that program will take charge, and when the time comes, she will deliver Joy’s baby.

There are certainly concerns. This is, after all, a completely uncertain lifestyle. There’s no way to know when the weather will change again, and whether we will be able to survive it if it gets as bad or worse than it was during the last storm cycle.

Then there’s the question of what kind of a future this baby can have. He or she will be one of a very few, maybe the only one in her/his generation. While I did remarkably well living alone for several decades, most people probably would not remain sane doing that, even with all of the HC programs that simulate other people.

Still, I am strongly in favor of this baby happening. It will all work out, one way or another.

Interestingly enough, Lana made a comment about really wanting a baby of her own. She was looking right at me while she said it. I have no idea what to make of that, except that I’m the only other available male.

Next: a new baby!

11/14: #15 seed in the NIT, and we beat #2 seed, #9 ranked Virginia 74-73 on a buzzer beating three by SG Dave Kana. We had 4 guys in double figures and except for ball handling (19 TOs) we played exceptionally well.

Great way to start my tenure at UNC!

#10 seed Stanford upset #7 so they’re next.

11/16: 91-83. We led all the way, by as many as 15. 25 for SF Key Lack and 23 for PG Ben Robb; 15 RBs for C Cam Reed. 19 threes. Still too many TOs (17).

#11 seed Miami upset #6 then upset #3. We play them in the semis.

11/18: 94-75. We were down 9 early, 6 at the half. We made a couple of adjustments in the locker room and the 2nd half score was 50-25. 26, 5, 4 for Kana, 20 for Lack, 17, 7, 8 for Robb. +10 RBs and a season best 11 TOs.

#5 seed, #3 ranked Georgia for the title. This will be a challenge but hey, we got this far!

11/20: 85-93. Great O, no D. 20 and 9 for Reed, 24 for Lack. Ridiculous number of foul calls (54). That didn’t beat us but there’s no reason for that sort of thing.

All 4 recruits sign.

We were #9 in this week’s poll but I don’t think we’ll stay that high.

12/11: 8-2. #9, RPI #25, which is way too high. I mean we just lost at Nicholls ST!

12/25: At the end of pre-conf. play we’re 10-2, #11, RPI #11. +9.6 PPG, +2.8 RBs, +3.8 TOs.

We crushed #7 Memphis, 79-63 here.

January, 2153: Waiting for the baby for the past several months has been very exciting for all of us. Joy had few problems and no major ones, which made it easier on all of us. A lot of our activities and routines stayed pretty much the same. As Joy got bigger and bigger the rest of us took over more of her part of the work load but she did what she could, and really did her share.

Finally, last night, the baby came. When it became clear that it was time Kevin alerted the rest of us and we all went into the HC maternity ward. Kevin coached Joy in the delivery room as the rest of us waited nervously outside.

After 14 hours Lacy Joy was born. She weighed in at 7 pounds 7 ounces, and she and mom were just fine.

This is going to be one very well looked after kid.

1/1/2050: 12-3, 2-1 after the first week of ACC play. One of our goals is to finish in the top half of the conf. That won’t be easy but we just might be able to do it.

1/15: 14-3, 4-1, #11, RPI #5. This team is definitely exceeding expectations.

1/29: 18-4, 8-3, #10, RPI #4. +8.1 PPG, +2.9 RBs, +1.6 TOs. In a 2 way tie for 2nd in the ACC, 1 back of 1st. We have 4 players averaging between 12.7 and 14.9.

2/12: 22-4, 12-2, #10, RPI #8. Alone in 2nd, 1 back of 1st. But 3 of our last 4 are on the road. Still, it will be hard to finish below 3rd.

2/26: We end the regulars season 23-7, 13-5. #11, RPI #11. +7.7 PPG, +3.8 RBs, +0.8 TOs. 3rd in conf. We had a tough schedule at the end.

3/5: We’re not at the point where March 5 is a worrisome day yet. No one left.

April, 2153: Lacy is three months old. She has been a pure delight. All of our other leisure time activities take a back seat to playing with Lacy. We’re not ignoring the things that need to be done at all, but the basketball coaching game, the table tennis, the Sherlock Holmes adventure, and all the rest are not getting nearly as much play as they did before she arrived. It’s amazing how fascinating a baby is, even when she’s not capable of doing much.

Joy’s the mom and the boss. She decides what we can and cannot do, and she tries to limit how much we spoil Lacy, not always successfully.

The weather has stayed really delightful- 70s during the day, 60s at night, lots of sunshine, very little wind. As a result we’re not overworking the robots, and there have been almost no breakdowns of anything, and the few there have been were never much trouble to fix. Life is good.
