3/9: #9 seed Washington ST, 11-17, 8-10, won the play in. They’re first.
3/10: 76-62. Not as close as the score. We never trailed, and we led by 21 at the half. 20, 9 for Gamm.
#4 seed Colorado, 14-14, 10-8, in the semis. We beat them by 38 here and then 23 there.
3/11: 70-41. 42-7 at the half. 7! A team effort with everyone contributing.
#3 seed Oregon, 19-10, 10-8, for the title. We won by 26 here, but only 7 there.
3/12: 77-62. Up 14 at the half. 41 RBs, 6 TOs. Great play by everyone, especially the bench.
32-1. I can’t believe we won’t be #1 overall this year.
#1 overall. We play Stony Brook, 17-15.
3/16: 75-51. Never close. 19, 15 for Gamm, 20, 7, 7 for Burk. +27 RBs.
#9 seed Arizona, 20-11, in the 2nd round. We beat them by 21 in the regular season.
3/18: 87-43. A complete rout. I played everybody. 51 RBs.
#5 seed, #13 ranked Memphis, 25-9, in the Sweet Sixteen.
3/23: 92-65. They stayed with us for the 1st half. We adjusted and tore it up in the 2nd. Sub guard Ted Mart led us with 19.
#3 seed, #7 ranked UConn, 28-5, in the Elite Eight. This is a good team, especially inside.
3/25: 75-71. We were down 10 at the half and then 13 when they hit a three on the 1st possession of the 2nd half. Their PF was killing us to that point. I called a TO 20 seconds into the 2nd half and really raised the roof.
They woke up, and it all turned around. That PF ended up with 30 and 13, but he only got 5 after that. 27 for Burk, and +16 RBs, +11 in the 2nd half.
Back to the Final Four as we try to threepeat.
We play #2 ranked Seton Hall, 34-2. They’re a very good team. Their SG gets 23.8 a game. They only have one good big guy, and that may be the difference. We beat them by only 6 in the Coaches Classic, but then by
19 here.
On the other side it’s #3 Duke, 31-5, vs. #8 Indiana, 28-7.
4/1: 93-72. I expected more trouble. 20, 6, 9 for Roy, 21 for Burk, 13, 10 for Gamm, 11, 7 for Jenk. +21 RBs.
#8 Indiana, 29-7, for the title. They rebound very well, but we think we can turn them over. This is a team we should beat, but you need to do it on the court.
4/3: 90-48. Wow, just WOW! 64-25 at the half. Uda Burk led us with 21.
Threepeat!
4/4: Awards: Burk was tourney MOP and 2nd team All American. I got national COY. In the PAC 12 Ken Gamm was POY, frosh OY and 1st team. Lan Blon was defensive POY and 1st team, and Burk made 1st team. Bob Roy made 2nd team. I got conf. COY.
I have decided that if there is any way possible, I’m leaving UCLA. Southern California has become a desert hell to live in and the crime rate is through the roof. I’m looking forward to a new challenge.
4/9: I’m going to North Carolina. I didn’t expect to be that far south, but I couldn’t resist. Their program has been going downhill for several years. Their Team Prestige is down to 66, and they were 16-14, 7-
11 this season. But the tradition is there, the budget is there, the support is there. And do to a quirk in climate change the average temp is in the 70s year round.
4/16: I have trouble hiring assistants and can’t get decent ones, as usual.
4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade. Got it. We go from C- to C+.
38-1 and another title. A great run at UCLA. Overall, I am 573-141, .803.
I expect it to take about 3 years to get UNC to the point where they are winning national titles.
