DDSCB23: Alone

11/15: 87-78. It was close for 22 minutes, then we went on a run. Up 6 at halftime. 30 and 7 for C Andy Ezel, 25, 6, 2, 3 for PF Gene Feld. +28 in the paint. We won it up front. Great start to the season.

Michigan, 1-0, is here. They played great D in their opener but only got 22 RBs.

11/18: 73-49. Fantastic D! It was never close. 17, 7, 2, 3, 3 blocks for Feld. 14 each for Ells, Ezel, and Howe. +34 in the paint. Again this year we’re an inside team.

Big mess regarding terraforming. A super cyclone hit. The robots managed to get themselves and all tools and equipment inside the shack but the winds were so unbelievably strong that they knocked down the shack. All robots survived, none with minor damage, but lots of tools and equipment were blown far away. Despite an extensive search nothing was found. The robots are in the process of 3d printing tools and equipment. We’ll lose a couple of weeks of work time. I guess in a 40 year project that’s no big deal.

Oh, a new shack needs to be printed as well. It’s designed to be movable so the robots can take it with them as they go around the planet. The shack is designed to survive most cyclones but this one was way beyond the force of the cyclones that typically strike here on Mars.

#20, Seton Hall, 1-1, is here. Their C is playing hurt.

11/22: 90-68. Good D again, which always pleases me. Up 15 at the half. 23, 10 for Feld, 23, 6 for sub C/F Greg King, 13, 10 for Ezel, 10, 4, 7 for PG Art Howe. +16 RBs, +30 in the paint.

Off to the Alaskan Classic. We’re the #3 seed. We play #6 Hofstra, 3-0. They beat #6 Villanova by 14 so they can play.

11/25: 102-73. We led all the way, easily for most of the way. 32, 5, 3 for Feld, 14, 12, 6 blocks for Ezel, 15, 3, 6 for Howe, 16, 4 for Ells. +20 RBs, +38 in the paint.

A rematch with #2 seed Wisconsin, . We beat them by 9 at home in our opener.

11/26: 91-80. This game was a lot like the last time we played them. We never trailed and were up 18 at the half. 19, 8 for Ezel, 12, 5 for Ells, 11, 1, 8 for Howe, 14 for Feld. +28 inside.

We’re now ranked #10 #1 seed, #8 ranked Creighton, 5-0, for the tourney title. They play very good D. It will be their back court vs. our front court.

11/27: 84-64 and the title. Great D again. It was close for 25 minutes. Up only 4 at the break. 23, 6, 3, 3, 3 blocks for Feld, 12 each for Demo, Howe, and Ezel. +20 in the lane.

#2 ranked Ohio ST, 6-0, is here. They’re strong at all positions, they play great D, and they hit the boards. We’ll need to be at our best.

11/29: 82-60. We were really great tonight. It was a 2 point game at halftime. WE played stifling D in the 2nd, holding them to 18 points. 22, 4, 6 for Howe, 16, 6 for Feld, 14, 6, 3 blocks for Ezel. Very good bench play from, King and guard Jon Abur. Bench was +14. +22 in the paint.

7-0 and looking good!

Well, I bit the bullet. I’m going to go ahead with the 64 kids. Making sure the rest of the robots we’ll need- medical, parental, teaching… are being 3d printed so the fetuses can be thawed and grown.

The kids will be born in Sept. or Oct. depending how long everything else takes. Noy totally comfortable about this but…

4-1 Utah ST is here. This is a team we should beat.

12/2: 101-60. A true blow out. Up only 14 at the half but 57-30 in the 2nd. 22, 10, 4 blocks for Ezel, 13, 8 for Feld, 12, 6 for King, 11 assists for Howe. As is usually the case we won it inside. +28 in the paint.

At 5-1 Iowa, ranked #23. We’re up to #6. They do a lot of things well, especially at home.

12/6: 94-85. They were in the battle for a long time. Tied at the half, tied with 6 ½ to play. Then we took charge. 34, 12, 4 blocks for Ezel, 15, 8 for Feld, 14, 9 for Ells. Another night when the big guys led the way. +24 inside.

At 5-2 Alabama. They’re good outside but I don’t think they can match our inside game.

12/13: 68-83. Off nights are bound to happen. We just couldn’t get it going on O. We shot 38.5%, 3-10 on threes. It was close for awhile but they pulled away midway through the 2nd half. 25, 14, 4 blocks for Ezel but no one else did much. Our D could have been better. +15 RBs, +14 in the paint but it wasn’t enough.

Last pre-conf. game is with #9 Creighton, 10-2, here. We beat them by 20 in the Alaskan Challenge title game. They’re strength is outside.

12/20: 89-49. Incredible D! 50-29 at halftime. 20, 7 for Feld, 18, 9 for Ezel, 15, 6 for Ells. +15 RBs, +36 in the lane.

12/25: We end the pre-conf season at 10-1, #12, NET #1.

+19.3 PPG, #1 in the nation in scoring. #1` in assists as well. #3 overall NET Rating. +10.3 RBs, +5.3 assists. +4.4 steals. -6.1 TOs, 10.7 per game, which is great!

Andy Ezel leads us in points with 19.5, and RBs, with 9.3. Gene Feld gets 18.5 and 7.0. Howe gets 7.3 assists.

The fetuses are growing. We expected the births to take place in late Sept. or early Oct.

12/27: We start ACC play at 11-1 Boston College. 0-1 vs. ranked teams. They play good D.

12/28: 90-66. Excellent D! It took awhile. Up 10 at the half. We held them to 27 in the 2nd. 29, 17, 3, 3, 3 blocks for Ezel. 12, 6 for King. +18 for the Bench. +30 inside, +13 RBs. We won this one where we usually win them, inside.

#9 Louisville, 8-4, 1-0, is here. 2-2 vs. ranked teams. They’re a big favorite but I don’t believe it. It’s good for motivation though.

12/30: 76-63. Up 20 at the half. They never got closer than 5 in the 2nd. 19, 8, 6 blocks for Ezel, 21, 3, 4 for Howe, 12, 10 for King. +22 inside.

I stopped in to look at the fetuses and the whole operation. It’s being done in a large room in the holo. There’s no place outside the holo where it could be done. Mostly health care workers and technicians checking the fetuses and making sure they’re getting everything they need. Interesting operation.

1/1/2228: At 4-7, 1-1, Kona. Their PF is out with a broken finger.

1/2: 95-68. We led for the last 37 minutes. Up 8 at the half. 29, 15, 3 for Ezel, 13, 8 for Feld, 10, 1, 6, 5 for Howe, 11, 6 for King. +30 in the lane.

#10 Syracuse, 12-3, 2-2, is here. They’ve struggled in ACC play so far.

1/9: 90-65. We never trailed. Up 13 at halftime. 18, 17, 5 blocks for Ezel, 19, 12 for Feld, 12, 1, 7, 3 for Howe, 14, 4 for Ells. +23 RBs, +24 in the paint.

14-1, 4-0, alone in 1st, #8, NET #2.

I’ve decided I’m moving to another school next season. I need more of a challenge.

I’m “dating,” casually, in the holo. Not interested in anything serious right now.

Doing either running or hiking every day.

At 5-8, 0-4 North Carolina. They’re definitely having a down year. They have trouble scoring.

1/11: 74-55. Stifling D. Close for a half, up 3 at the break. 40-24 in the 2nd. 20, 15 for Ezel, 19, 13, 2, 3 for Feld. +26 in the land, +14 RBs.

3-12, 0-6 Duke is here. A very unusual, very poor season for them. Their PF is playing hurt.

1/13: 79-32. Wow! 32! They scored 11 in the 1st, 21 in the 2nd. Their leading scorer had 9, next guy had 4.

15, 13 for Ezel, 12, 5, 6 for Howe, 14, 3 for King. +24 RBs, +36 in the paint.

I really am enjoying my alone time lately. It varies though. Sometimes I feel isolated and lonely but at other times, like now, I’m good with it. I’ve been alone on Mars for about 6 ½ years now. Hard to believe.

At #13 Louisville, 10-8, 3-4. They are excellent rebounders but that’s about it. Weirdly, they’re favored.

We’re #5.

1/18: 52-67. I can’t believe we scored only 52. Awful. We were up 5 at halftime, having led by as many as 13. In the 2nd we just couldn’t make a shot. We scored 19 points. We shot 28% for the game.

14, 7 for Ezel, 10, 7 for King. No one else did anything. We were out played inside and outside.

At 11-6, 4-2, Georgia Tech. This is the battle for 1st place in the early going. They’re 1 game behind us. Looks like their outside vs. our inside.

1/20: 93-80. Way to bounce back from a bad loss!

Up 16 at the break. 34, 9 for Feld, 14, 5, 3 for Ells, 15, 4 for Ezel, 15 for King, 11 assists for Howe. +42 in the paint.

17-2, 7-1. Up 1 over Pitt and VA. #4, NET #3.

11-8, 5-4 Clemson is here. And once again, their outside vs. our inside.

1/25: 96-53. Solid D! 48-23 at the half. 29, 16 for Ezel, 13, 11, 3 blocks for Feld, 12, 6, 4 for Howe, 12, 3 for #3 guard Jon Abur.

2 game lead in the ACC over 3 teams.

1/27: At #15 Syracuse, 15-6, 5-5. We beat them by 25 at our place but it could be different on the road.

Andy Ezel is #3 and Gene Feld #13 on the Norton list.

All the recruits hit our SAT score.

1/30: 74-88. The road is tough. Back and forth for about 10 minutes but we didn’t look good. Then they went on a run and we never led again. Down 13 at the half. 20, 19, 3 blocks for Ezel, 12, 13 for Feld, 11, 3 for Ells. Their starting guards scored 23 more than ours.

At the halfway point in conference play we’re 18-3, 8-2, 2 game lead in the ACC. #5, NET #2.

+18.8 PPG, 3rd. +11.3 RBs, 2nd. +5.9 assists, 1st. -5.3 turnovers.

Ezel leads us in points, 20.1, and RBs, 11.1. Also leads in blocks, 2.5. Feld gets 16.6, 8.4. Howe gets 7.0 assists.

Sean Demo hasn’t been doing much at SG. Jon Abur is going to get more minutes.

8-11, 3-7 North Carolina is here. We won by 19 there.

2/1: 89-64. A breeze! 52-29 at halftime. 13, 14 for Ezel, 19, 9 for Feld, 19, 2, 5 for Howe. +21 RBs, +32 inside.

Damn! Something happened to the birth project and all the fetuses died. The robots are trying to figure out what happened. When they do we’ll start again.

At 3-17, 0-11 Duke. We won by 47 at home. They give up 11.5 more than they score.

2/3: 71-53. An easy win but a lot closer than the last time we played them. We led by 13 at the half. 18, 4 steals for Abur, who’s going to start. 12, 11 for Ezel. +14 RBs, +18 in the paint.

20-3, 10-2, 2 game lead in the ACC. #3, NET #2. 8 to play.

2nd of 3 straight road games is at Wake Forest, 14-12, 6-9. They’re 0-4 vs. Top 25 teams. We have a big edge inside but they have a really good back court.

2/20: 78-58. Close first half. We led by only 5 at the break. Then we did a better job of working it inside and ran away with it. 22, 10 for Feld, 18, 13 for Ezel, 13, 8 for King. +17 RBs, +26 in the lane.

Lots of progress with the terraforming project, but a LONG way to go. Robots are breaking down too often so we’re reducing their work day.

At 14-12, 8-9 Va. Tech. 2-2 vs. ranked teams. Their strength is outside.

2/24: 119-112 in regulation. What a shootout! They built a 17 point 1st half lead. We got it to 9 at halftime. Then we stayed hot and they cooled down in the 2nd. We never led by more than 7 though.

23, 6 for Feld, 18, 4, 5 for Howe, 17, 7 for Ezel, 15, 5 for King. Crazy game!

Pitt was upset at home. We’re 2 up with 2 to play.

16-11, 10-8 Virginia is in town. I don’t think they can stay with us.

3/1: 85-61 to clinch 1st place in the ACC. Really good D. Up by 11 at halftime. 22, 14, 6 blocks for Ezel, 15, 7, 5 blocks for Ells, 12, 7 for Feld, 11, 4 for super sub Greg King who has been good just about every night. +42 in the paint, +11 RBs.

Our last game of the regular season is vs. 2nd place, #19 Pitt, 23-6, 14-5, here at home, where we’ve sold out every game again. As is often the case it will be their outside vs. our inside.

3/3: 92-69, a blow out. Psychologically important if we meet them again.

53-40 at the half. 18, 8, 4 blocks for Ezel, 18, 7, 4 for Held. Ezel and Feld have been a terrific a, 2 punch for us. 13, 9, 6 blocks for Ells. +16 for the bench. +22 inside.

3/5: Little used frosh SF Tom Vick is the only player to declare for the draft.

Ezel is #3, Feld #9 on the Norton list.

We end the regular season at 27-4, 17-3, #3, NET #2. Up 3 on 2nd place Pitt, 4 or more over the rest.

+17.5 PPG, #1 in the nation in scoring and assists, #2 in RBs, 2nd overall NET Rating. +10.9 RBs, +4.9 assists, +4.6 steals. -6 TOs, 10.4 per game.

Ezel leads us with 18.9, 10.5. 16.9. 8.4 for Feld. Howe gets 6.6 assists and only 2.4 TOs.

On to the post season!

3/9: #8 seed Florida ST, 16-14, 11-9, in the quarter finals. We won by only 8 at home. We’ll need to play well- from here on in, actually!

Post game press conference (excerpts): “Randy Frod, EPSN. Coach Wynn, can NC State threepeat?”

“That’s a very difficult thing to do. No one has done it since the legendary John Wooden UCLA teams more than two centuries ago.”

“That’s what you said last year about winning it twice in a row.”

“(laughs) That’s true, but this is even harder. You need to catch fire, and you need to get lucky at least once during the 6 games in order to win it. It’s asking a lot for that to happen three years in a row.”

“How about the ACC tourney. You guys have dominated that conference.”

“At this time of the year one bad night and you’re out. We have the talent to win the ACC but the best team doesn’t always win. Let’s see what happens.”

3/10: 86-71. It wasn’t that close. We won comfortably. Up 15 at the half. 28, 15 for Ezel, 21, 5, 3 blocks for Feld. +30 inside, +13 RBs.

21-12, 12-8, #5 seed Ga. Tech in the semifinals. We won by 13 there. They have a good outside game.

3/11: 86-90. I am NOT happy! We blew a 15 point 2nd half lead. The officiating was beyond awful. They went to the line 54 times, we went 29. Starters Ells, Howe, and Abur fouled out and Ezel and

Feld wound up with 4. Sub guard Sean Demo fouled out. I took a T when we were up 11. I guess it came back to hurt us but enough was enough. They beat us outside. 23, 12, 3 blocks for Ezel, 20, 3 blocks for Feld. We won big inside but it wasn’t enough.

Post game press conference (excerpts): “Randy Frod, EPSN with Coach Wynn. Tough loss Coach.”

“They all are at this time of year.”

“What beat you?”

“All credit to Ga. Tech but their best 3 players wore whistles.”

Ga. Tech won the title game.

I don’t think this will cost us a #1 seed. Probably be out West.

3/12: #1 Midwest. We play #16 Lehigh, 19-13. It’s a 1 vs. 16 game. What can I say.

I’m $10,000 lighter due to that brief comment about the officials after the Ga. Tech game.

3/16: 84-71. Way too close. We were up by only 4 at the half and we didn’t take charge until the last 6-7 minutes. Foul trouble hurt but I didn’t get T’d up.

26, 8 for Feld, 16, 3, 7 for Howe. We won it inside but we really didn’t play all that well.

#8 seed Iowa, 23-9. We beast them by 9 there in early December. 2-5 vs. ranked teams. They do a lot of things well.

3/18: 75-85 and a way too early end to the season. We never led after the first two minutes, and trailed by as many as 22. Down 10 at the half. The refs really hurt us. 19 for Howe, 15, 9 for little used

C/F John Kent, 11, 8 for Feld.

Post game press conference (excerpts): “Randy Frod, EPSN. Tough loss Coach.”

“The worst part is there’s no coming back from this one.”

“What happened?”

“Good question! Andy Ezel played 4 minutes due to fouls, and due to the terrible officiating. Gene Feld fouled out in 20 minutes. When your 2 best players don’t get to play it’s tough to win. But, to be
honest, Iowa played very well, and we didn’t seem to have the fire in the belly we had last year and the year before. Maybe my kids thought they couldn’t lose. BUT, I’m very, very proud of every one of them”

I’m still committed to leaving if I get an interesting offer. We’ll see what happens.

4/3: #10 Houston is the champ.

Florida ST won the NIT.

4/4: Awards: Andy Ezel is my first ever 1st team All American. Gene Feld is my first ever 2nd team All American. In the ACC Ezel is POY and 1st team, along with Feld. I am yet again Conf. COY.

4/9: Let’s see who wants me!

My dream came true. I’m going to UConn!

Press Conference, excerpts: “Joe Reed, EPSN. Coach, you caught every by surprise by leaving NC ST.”

“I’m sure I did. I’m from Connecticut, as you know. My dream as a kid was to play for the Huskies. That dream didn’t come true. As an adult I knew that if they ever called I’d say yes in a heartbeat. They called. I’m very proud regarding my time with NC ST and I am truly grateful for the support I received from everyone at the university and really, everyone in the state. I leave with fond memories.”

“What’s the plan here at UConn?”

“Well, it’s too new to say for sure but we have lots of talent here and we’ll certainly do all we can to be a major player on the national scene. Go Huskies!”

We’ll play Flex and Triangle on O, and strictly man on D and when we press. Not much change for the team.

We finished 6th in the Big East and got to the Elite Eight in the big dance. Ranked #25 NET #21 at the end of the season.

I’ll be living in Manchester, a short commute to UConn, and close to my parents in New Britain. Yes, I have a holo life when coaching.

4/16: I’m keeping the coaching staff that was here. They’re all very good at what they do.

4/23: I ask A. D. Don Grey for money.

No. Don Grey said it wasn’t in the budget but he’ll try to come up with the money next year.

29-6, great regular season, poor post season in my final year at NC ST. 211-45, .824 in 7 seasons.
